You should host a workshop course and have people build these things and at the end they can either donate or keep them. Really innovative way to help the homeless situation.

Yesterday me and a Friend of mine were out on a bike ride and came past a man who started talking about your bicycle camper. Pretty crazy to find another subscriber of yours in the North East of England! Keep up the good work! I've started building a bicycle camper of my own :)

    Hi Paul,
I recently purchased the plans for this structure, and intend to build one for quick and easy shelter on my land while I build out some more permanent and more roomy structures. I need to hike my supplies in, and I don't own a truck to get too much to the land (a kia soul is already spooky enough on the dirt roads) so finding this design was a godsend. Something I can cartop in, do final assembly on site, and when I come back, even if I get there late at night and am not up to pitching a tent, I've got a secure, dry, relatively warm shelter waiting for me.

First, I have to say I think you're awesome. Your demeanor and voice reminds me of Bob Ross. Very meditative, fun to watch and follow. I can't wait to see what your next master piece will turn out to be. Growing up my Father had a wood working shop and I made miniature chest, wishing wells and just all sorts of things. Lost it all when my Mother fell ill. I miss it a lot and I was happiest when I was making things for others to enjoy. Maybe one day I can get it all back. But, watching you makes me feel like I can do it sooner than later. Thank you for sharing your work. I know I appreciate it!!!

Polypropylene unfortunately degrades in direct sunlight, and that's why I did the exposure test. I've seen it degrade on less than one year, turning into thousands of plastic brittle shards.

two levels, one fits atop the other so one can stand inside - bathing, dressing - with a square pole internal frame made of plastic tied chloroplast. six 3 ft poles should do it. anchor in place with plastic ties. brilliant idea on your part paul. would you care to try it - a collapsible shelter - and see what you come up with... ? be neat if you could use chloroplast again. give it a shot!

    great work!
the only way I d see better for a city to buy this is if it was stackable,
with a ladder, and maybe stack them 5 units high.
cities can give homeless people a parking,
then put hundreds of shelters to keep them in their 'village'.
once they get a chance at a better life, and leave,
another one just hoses the thing clean and take the place.
economical and clean, it would be a more humane solution.
    good job!

You could plaster the inside with wet paper, let it dry. If you do 5 layers, that won't happen again, people can stand on it then. Especially if you stick them together with water diluted woodglue.. You get a little less room, but cost is still 100 bucks. Big bucket of woodglue is about 20 dollars.

I made a Front air damn for my geo metro out of black coroplast maybe 10 years ago. Colorado, very sunny, the 6000' elevation area not the mountains. It;s a vertical surface , not horizontal, I'm surprised how well it has lasted, Still not brittle. I suspect maintaining a layer of paint could shield it from UV even better. Might have to select a paint that does not interfere with the plasticizers etc.

Paul what do you think about this idea? Use recycled parashute fabric or bamboo fabric and design different models of shelters. Concept use the fabrics with banana plant cellulose sponge to fill the void between the fabrics. The shelter will have mesh on the window's plus a zippered flap with a thin piece of sponge in the void. Then the door having a zippered door with the sponge within it has well with a zippered mesh door. An insulated hole for a stove pipe with the floor having a sponge core has well. A spot to install a solar battery powered fantastic fan for circulation. Okay now the twist. The whole structure would be treated with water activated ceramic. The shelter would be pressed down has far has possible and vacumed sealed into a ball or square shape with a pop off lid that had an inner plastic pitcher that you could pull up. Then pour a gallon of boiling water into the pitcher filling it has the shelter absorb's the boiling water and then expands emerging from it's compressed state has it burst's out of the vacumed sealed bag erecting. itself. Then the materials cure and harden has the shelter dries out with the banana plant cellulose sponges hardening with out any shrinkage for a long term shelter. All the surfaces would become hard like how concrete canvas works. You have done lots of shelter design so what do you think about this concept? 😊

You could put ribs in there to help protect it's structure. Good video. (You really enjoyed that didn't you...lol). I have been singing the praises of your shelters and have ideas to build something along the lines but not the same. Corex or Coraplast, is ideal and cheap and I was thinking how did he paint that and what did he use? I am going for a German design but with a twist, I get to use a tarp extension doubling the area and all nice and stealthy.

Great creation, and interesting test. I know a good number of my cities' homeless thru volunteer work and a few have election sign creations for semi-shelter; but I think next election cycle I'll collect the coroplast signs, buy up zip ties and go on a building spree with some of them.
And MOVING?!?!? have you thought of raffling off the creations that aren't moving with you? More money for moving or your favorite charity. And I'm sure your more local (I am currently in NY headed to PR) - I bet many would drive over to pick up a creation of yours - I would if I were within a hundred miles!!

  • @fredferd965

I have a question here - my wife uses heating pads for her arthritis. They're a bag weighing about a pound, and have rope handle loops on the ends. We head them in our microwave for 1 & 1/2 minutes, and they stay warm for an hour or so - helps her elbows, etc. Would it be possible to create some sort of element, maybe a bag of material of some kind (I don't know the chemistry) say 20 pounds or so, that could be heated at the beginning of the evening from a central source of some kind, distributed, and used to help keep a shelter warmer for most of the night? I know that it's far easier to dream these ideas up than it is to actually design and create them, but I thought it might help.
