Finally an 80s-ish look that isn’t only masses of fluorescent colours/neon. So many beautiful looks from this era also incorporated earthy tones, whether they were natural or dramatic looks. I’m glad you have captured this in your tutorial, definitely reminds me of the makeup worn on the runway and I love it! Your content is always as informative as it is enjoyable xxx
yes it's so nice! and if i'm remembering right lisa has done a beautiful 80s grace jones look, too! if she hasn't and i'm remembering wrong then i NEED to see one from her.
I worked with Charlie about 6 years ago on a test shoot and she still to this day is one of my favourite models I’ve ever worked with. It’s lovely to see her on your channel Lisa.
SlayMe Queen firstly her beauty, it was exciting to know that I was painting a face that was so striking. She was also very kind, relaxed, engaging and happy to chat with the whole team. I just found her really easy to around.
Why is everybody complaining about listening to Charli's story as if she is interrupting Lisa? Lisa was asking her questions the whole time and I am sure she brought her onto her channel for this video for people to hear her story (as well as view this lovely makeup tutorial). I am sure if Lisa truly did not want her to speak, she would have instructed so beforehand. It sounds rather insensitive for you all to ignore this young lady's beautiful story and say, "omg shut up, Lisa is trying to do your makeup." I am not a makeup artist, but if they are anything like your hair dresser, I am sure they love to chat with their clients as well. As long as the client is following their instructions on when and how to tilt their head and not move their mouths, I don't see it as a problem (again, especially if the artist is asking you the question).
I love lisa and was so excited about this video!! I grew up in that era and she (as always) nailed the look. However it is not a tutorial. I learnt nothing and I'm sad :(
When I got a glimpse of the thumbnail I though it was a boy-model. I'm not saying that she's masculine, just somewhat androgynous and VERY, very beautiful.
We are all responsible for changing the standards in the fashion industry. We, the consumers, hold the power for ourselves and for the future generations. I've worked in the industry for over a decade and nearly all the models I've worked with (even size 0, including men) have had stretch marks and/or cellulite. We've just been so accustom to seeing photoshopped images that people think perfection is the standard.
as much as we are brainwashed into liking what we see in a magazine etc., the real solution is to have positive self esteem and discernment. if one has low self esteem, you always create problems in your mind and no amount of diversity and inclusivity in media will change that. positive self esteem should come from inside you and not from an external factor.
Yes, so very Brooke Shields, but also reminded me of the women in the ‘Simply Irresistible’ music video except for the lip colour. Such a gorgeous look.
Charli, thank you for sharing your story and what an inspiration you are to so many woman. You should be so proud of yourself and your accomplishments. I mean shit, you overcame the modeling industry and exposed everyone to how unnatural and pressuring that industry can truly be. I myself wanted to become a model but I am a “thicker body style” and I never had the courage to do what you did. It takes a lot for someone to conquer their dreams but also be out of their comfort zone while doing it. How amazing. You’re beautiful and have such an epic personality. You have gained yourself a new fan and congrats to your career! Lisa, wonderful work as always ❤️
I'm gonna be honest, the thumbnail got me, but Charli's story made me stay. That was really unexpected and I appreciate how open she was talking about her experience and struggles. I did never really follow the model scene since it always was absurd to me, but it's brave and enlightening to talk about such a topic.
I wish I had a body-positive role model when I was a teen with body image issues, but now I have Ashley Graham to look up to and I'm really inspired by Charli's story. I love her personality too
maeflower522 Yes, Ashley’s confidence is so inspiring, even if you are not plus size. It’s definitely a better time than 10-15 years ago when all we had were super skinny models and actresses.
@@platosfriend Very true. I'm not a big girl, but it's still SO good to see bigger ladies get positive attention. It's not nice to feel like I'll be less respected and like myself less if my body changed as I get older. Even if you do fit into the traditional box.... it FEELS TIGHT IN HERE SOMETIMES.
I'm so glad that Lisa mentioned the history of contouring - it's so interesting! If anyone watches glamourdaze's YT channel (a vintage makeup channel), you can see the women doing baking and contouring. There are so many makeup tips and tricks. As Lisa is a cosmetic historian of sorts, I would love to see her do some historical videos on the evolution of makeup. Watching her contour was really inspiring. Not to take anything away from others, but it was nice to see someone go in with such a light hand.
I have a short bowel syndrome and severe underweight and as much as I try to explain to people the severe and at times truly dangerous health issues I have due to that, many afterwards keep replying "But I bet a lot of women are jealous" - because that "look" of BMI 15 which almost looks like you come from a concentration camp has become NORMAL and what one should strive for. It took me 18 months to gain 3 kg with a strict high calorie diet, supplements and 3x weekly 90 min light muscle strengthening training plus daily physio exercises but I still prefer that to parental feeding through a tube. I can tell every 500 g of gaining strength. I fret getting sick or no availability to the food I need for I can then easily loose 3 to 5 kg a week. And people think I should be happy to have this condition ! I hope women realise soon again when overweight actually starts, and what is a healthy normal range. And strive for that. Your body is your temple, honour it, treat it like that! It's a marvellous, mysterious thing!
To find out that you're unintentionally thin due to a health a condition, and dismiss the seriousness of your illness by implying you should be happy for it because your looks would make other women jealous, is simply unconscionable. Some people are stupid and crazy. I hope you find a treatment that works for you.
I've heard that over and over as underweight person with hypoglycemia. That is fabulous that you have gained weight and feel good in your own body! What kind of foods did you eat? I'm desperately trying to gain but haven't been able to ! 😭
What a babe! Her story about not ever getting thin enough for agencies seems like the norm unfortunately. I'm glad she spoke up and told her story! This look is BOMB! Lisa does it again! Nailing non grunge 90's!
I'd never heard of Charli Howard before but god, she's so beautiful, and after lurking around social media, I'm so happy to have been exposed to her. I've always felt similarly in that I definitely don't fit a typical model body, but I'm not plus sized/"curvy" either, so to see her body, especially after struggling with an eating disorder myself, really means a lot to me, and to see her championing bodies of all types, not just the two standards, makes me super emotional.
I just knew Kevyn Aucoin would be mentioned... he and Lisa would be my ultimate dinner party guests if it were possible, his story is so sad but his talent 🔥 ❤️
I met Kevyn with my mom when I was maybe like 8? But i still remember it perfectly, he was truly the nicest, most genuine person. He was so warm to everyone he met that day.
Oh yes! This is giving me Robert Palmer girl vibes, with a healthy dash of Cindy Crawford. Also, her brows and lashes are spectacular! Beautiful all around.
I remember when contouring was known as “shading” I was a teenager in the late 1980s and that remains my favourite style, but I also love the 1940s and 50s with the real glamour queens. Great look and *u*k 35 inch hips. My own body image is screwed up from the pressure that only thin is beautiful
She's amazing! I too used to struggle with anorexia and sometimes i feels that it's impossible to be truly free from it. But seeing someone who used to struggle too and now looks absolutely GORGEOUS and happy in her own skin gives me so much hope. It get better, girls & boys. We'll, too, one day be free.
I feel like I’m 15 again watching this video. I so wanted to be cindy Crawford wearing this look. The makeup colours available weren’t very good back then so I remember using a brown cover girl eyeliner to do my lips and thought I looked so cool 😂
Lucy I too adored our 90’s supermodel Cindy Crawford! I used to take brown eyeshadow all the way up to my eyebrows and than I used red lipstick. 🤦♀️ Now in my 40’s I wear minimal makeup.
Massive brow and eye lash envy! She reminds me a lot of Jessie J. This make up takes me back to my teens. I remember I had a lipstick by The Body Shop called Rosewood that I loved. I don't think they make it anymore.
Oh my god, Lisa. You are the queen. If for any makeup artist Lisa Eldridge level is not the goal then what are they even doing??! And I loved Charli sharing her story. Brilliant video in its simplicity and honesty.
Lisa I've always LOVED the makeup (and fashion) of the late 80s/early 90s (i.e. 1989-1992). To me it felt austere and modern but also beautiful and timeless. Earth-toned, classic and neutral yet quite glamorous, a "romanticized realism" if you will. Anyway, great video, beautiful, highly versatile look. Charli seems so sweet and thoughtful, and I love her mission towards body positivity. This world needs more people like her!!
Good heavens, she is gorgeous. I feel like I’m late to the Charlie party, but I love love love her energy! And Lisa’s late ‘80s/early ‘90s makeup look is absolutely fabulous and is giving me the best kind of flashbacks.
I mostly don't wear make up, but I totally love this model style. Brings back memories. As a young girl I tried looking like Cindy Crawford or a least like a model-me and I spend hours and hours in the bathroom. What a fun it was. Mum didn't think so... XD Thank you for throwing me back. :)
As a child of the 90's (I graduated mid-90's) I have to say contour and highlight was NOT commonly used in everyday life- blush yes but not the others, and concealer was always the same shade as your foundation, not lighter like it tends to be now!- but obviously this was for average people, not people in the beauty industry. But yes I remember browns being very popular!
It was used on the runway. I think that's what she meant. Contour had a moment on the runway. Kevyn Aucoin was known for his complexion work and contouring was a big part of that. But you're right, the every day woman didn't contour or know what it was probably.
Well that was totally engrossing. From Charli's gorgeous face to Lisa's ever soothing voice and amazing talent. I could listen to Charli talk all day about her stories and I could watch Lisa do makeup forever :) Lisa I have followed makeup since I was a teenager in the 90s and have loved Kevin as well since then, so this was very nostalgic. You are simply my favorite makeup artist. Thanks for all you do!
OMG! I LOVE Charli! I follow her religiously on Instagram! She shares such a positive message for body positivity and loving yourself, so I was thrilled to see her on your channel!
Love this! Love the look, but also love her!!!!!!!!! Charli is a joy, i adore how candid she is, I checks out her Instagram and gasped at how absolutely stunning she is (watching this video, not just appearance but personality too)!
My goodness, with that polka dot shirt to bring it full circle, this look brings back so many memories. I would definitely date this look somewhere between 1988 on into some of 1991. Those are absolutely the eye colors everyone wore, and they are the only shades I owned at the time. If memory serves me correctly, for drug store eyeshadow options, we had earth tones, blue or purple lol.
I dont do very much makeup on myself and I only own very few products..but I love watching this tutorials because I found it very relaxing, just watching her do her job and listen to her voice is so calming!
Whoa! Brooke Shields look-a-like. Brings back lots of memories. A girl that I went to high school with in the 90's always used a dark brown eyeliner by Wet N Wild to line and fill in her lips.
Are cellulite and stretch marks really imperfections? Aren't they part of just being a woman? We have come to accept a bombardment of pictures that are so air brushed that we as women have a warped image of ourselves. I have recently come to accept my body for what it is (it's taken over 25+ years!) and the feeling is freeing! Thanks Lisa for sharing Charli's story xx
I was a teen/young adult in the 80’s. The only color of eye shadow I used was brown and black eyeliner. Cindy Crawford was my idol! Beautiful make up as always and your model is gorgeous!
Thank you for this, it was nice to sort of being reading old magazines and gawking at old-school supermodels. You really made me go back in time to my teenage years! Also, finally someone with actual street/beauty cred pointing out that contour and highlighting were techniques developed with theatre and the beginning of the movie golden era! I’m not alone, I have Lisa Eldridge with me on this one!
By some freak coincidence I have my makeup done almost exactly like yours today! Soft brown eye makeup (a bit heavier liner because I like it that way) and red lipstick. Great vid. Great look. Great model. 👍
Charli and this look are simply stunning! Such wisdom for someone so young, I'm envious. The look reminded me of the models in the Robert Palmer "Simply Irresistible" video which fits in the timeline! Thank you Lisa for another great video experience💖
Dear Lisa, I'm so not into comments and especially writing them here but..... I really HAVE to thank you for sharing all that beautiful work of yours with all of us watching here. A BIG Thank you! I love your unique style and approach to what you' re doing, always be yourself and Best wishes!
Lisa, thank you for sharing this look and Charli you are so amazing! I really do love your eyebrows, they are so strong and dense, I really like that. :) You look stunning!
A few words on this era in makeup : ( I’m 55, so I lived it) - good to use bronzer for warm glow now (we all used tanning beds then, really), blush was used as contour, we didn’t use fake lashes, we loaded on the mascara, going for length over volume, separating each lash with a pin (again, really), our go-to eyeliner was a crayon-type, and we did not wing - a big, round eye was it - yes, it was a neutrals/browns a la Bobbie Brown makeup, (using a gold on lid only for evening) - the only color ever used (sometimes) on eyes were navy in the lower outer half of bottom lash line to bring out whites of the eye - early brows were super full like Charley’s (Brooke Shields’ influence) - great job Lisa, this more modern interpretation is so much better than it really was!!!
This story resonates in me so much. I'm 1.80 cm and when I was a teen I wanted to be a model for the same reasons, as I got bullied for being "big" when I was a child. Before i wanted to be a ballerina (danced until I was 28) but they told me at 6 years old that I would never become one. At 14 they kept telling me that I was tall and pretty but I had to be thinner to even consider modelling. That I had to be born again in a different shape if I wanted to be a model. I stopped eating, I took laxatives and had trycotilomania (obsessive compulsive behaviour where I pulled my hair nonstop until having bald spots). Story can go on but in the end I stopped trying both things. Modelling first, dancing later. Now there are dance companies that accept different body types, and now we have Instagram and models of all sorts. I wished I knew or these resources were available. Thank you for sharing this story that I bet resonates in many of us.
I remember in the 90s seeing part of a Vivien Westwood catwalk show on tv. The chief model, the star turn, was slim but had really plump jiggly thighs that wobbled, almost danced when she walked! I remember thinking "what a relief",because she looked normal and wonderful at the same time!
Such a beautiful makeup look, Lisa! Bravo! Since I heard you mention Marlene Dietrich, I’d love to watch you recreate her makeup. Your work on the makeup of Marilyn, Audrey, and Elizabeth are the best I’ve ever watched on UA-cam.
Her brows are to DIE FOR. Gorgeous girl! Thank you for such a lovely tutorial, I really like that your makeup isn't the Instagram glam we see these days. It's so natural and just enhances their natural features, love! X
Lisa! Please let us know how you keep your hands looking so young? This is something I'm concerned about as I get older, do you use a certain hand cream? Thanks, love your videos!x
She's the perfect 90s model! Made me think of the ad that Andie McDowell did for loreal, in the eighties. It was all beautiful, satiny neutral shadows. Very Smoky eye and nude lip. I was obsessed!!! Love you Lisa
Lisa I was in my 20s and 30s in the 80s and 90s and what you recreated is spot on! I really miss this look and Charlie’s natural eyebrows are exactly what was the look of the time and, you are right that it changed overnight. I clearly remember a photo of Christie Brinkley modeling the new thin brow. Drastic change.
I admire you women so much!!! And suddenly I want to play with makeup in a very lazy day, lol! It’s amazing when Lisa talks about makeup history. If you did my makeup, I couldn’t wash it off, I just would stop taking showers, lol!! Okay...not really
This is absolutely amazing! I’ve never seen a make up artist with skills and talent like Lisa’s. One of my favourite make up videos on UA-cam... ever!!!
Finally an 80s-ish look that isn’t only masses of fluorescent colours/neon. So many beautiful looks from this era also incorporated earthy tones, whether they were natural or dramatic looks. Perfectly stated huggledemon32! I graduated high school in 1995 and I loved the 90’s. When supermodels ruled! 💋💄
Kevin aucoin was known for his heavy contoured faces, it was a 90s runway look she didn’t mean regular women were doing it all day everyday.
Charli looks gorgeous and seems a lovely person - and what a lucky girl getting made up by the fabulous Lisa...
Brooke Shields, Gia, and a dash of Margaux Hemingway. STUNNING!!
Her facial features are so beautiful, plus this makeup really enhances them. She really looks straight out of these times...
I coulda sworn it was Freddie Mercury in the thumbnail!
The bob ross of makeup 😍
I dont do very much makeup on myself and I only own very few products..but I love watching this tutorials because I found it very relaxing, just watching her do her job and listen to her voice is so calming!
Whoa! Brooke Shields look-a-like. Brings back lots of memories. A girl that I went to high school with in the 90's always used a dark brown eyeliner by Wet N Wild to line and fill in her lips.
thank you and Charli for sharing her story and the discussion
Nice , I totally remember lining my lips with brown liner.
This is absolute perfection! thank for this Lisa
I wish one day u can do a male model makeup. Your work is stunning and soo much quality on your videos
She has kind of. She did a masculine look on herself not long ago. It was really beautiful
I was a teen/young adult in the 80’s. The only color of eye shadow I used was brown and black eyeliner. Cindy Crawford was my idol!
Beautiful make up as always and your model is gorgeous!
Goes to get ‘cushion cut Kate’ Lisa ring from jewellery box to wear, just to watch video! Beautiful Lisa thanks 💋 xx
Pls bring her back on your channel, Lisa. She’s such a special soul! As are you. ❤️❤️
Really appreciated the honesty of this video! Thank you both for making it happen.
Charli and this look are simply stunning! Such wisdom for someone so young, I'm envious. The look reminded me of the models in the Robert Palmer "Simply Irresistible" video which fits in the timeline! Thank you Lisa for another great video experience💖
Charlie looks like a mix between Georgia May Jagger and Lara Stone
Lisa, this is just beautiful--one of my all time favorite looks! I enjoyed meeting Charli! ❤️ Lisa
God Bless her and her truthfullness and honesty. It was beautiful and moving hearing her talk openly like this- thank you both =)
I want to sneeze so badly just to try the “fish” trick
Charli is a great model, very engaging. Make up look really suited her! X
Omg it's Charli! I love her so much she's such an inspiration! Two queens in one video yes!
I would love for you to do a version of Linda Evangelista's makeup during the time she went blonde.
I love the way you used a Barry M lipliner instead of some ridiculously expensive product
Charli Howard is exactly how I imagine Elizabeth Bennet
Wow Charli looks like Brook Shields. Beautiful look ❤️
I remember in the 90s seeing part of a Vivien Westwood catwalk show on tv. The chief model, the star turn, was slim but had really plump jiggly thighs that wobbled, almost danced when she walked! I remember thinking "what a relief",because she looked normal and wonderful at the same time!
I usually prefer the videos with your beautiful face, but Charli was super fun. :)
Those EYES!
She's the perfect 90s model! Made me think of the ad that Andie McDowell did for loreal, in the eighties. It was all beautiful, satiny neutral shadows. Very Smoky eye and nude lip. I was obsessed!!! Love you Lisa
I remember wearing this back in then...by far some of my favorite looks of all times
I LOVE CHARLI! This is an amazing look especially on her. Beautiful job Lisa! ❤
Obsessed with everything you do 😍😍
My lip color in the 90's was Toast of New York from REvlon ;-) I was wearing way less makeup but the lips were there...that brownish shade ;-)
She seems so nice and down to earth , not like other models with their heads up their holes
Beautiful! I'm going to do this look on Saturday... so I can look chic while drinking wine in my living-room... #lockdown
Amo vc e seus vídeos. Bjos do Brazil💙💚💛
Miss Howard! I loved seeing your beauty warmed up... You ended up looking so hot! I finished high-school in 1996 so I really enjoyed this!
She looks like Daisy Ridley!!
Thanks so much X
This is absolutely amazing! I’ve never seen a make up artist with skills and talent like Lisa’s. One of my favourite make up videos on UA-cam... ever!!!
😍😍😍 this look is my spirit animal
