@stevenobrien7686 and a rebuttal to "no amount of skill could have helped" as soon as the accelerator stuck. It would have helped to put on hazards, and start swerving from side to side. Your car has something called a differential which sends power to the wheel with least resistance, therefore, if all the weight is on one side of the vehicle and off of the other, the one with least resistance would spin with not a lot of traction. Eventually, the swerving will slow you down enough to start entering into a donut or a smaller circle until help could arrive and stop the vehicle. And even if you did roll, I'd much rather roll at 30 mph than 113. In summary, Yes, I do know what I'm talking about.

Yeah but the experience was nowhere near as cool. Dude had no control of that “chase” and was literally just doing what he could to hold that SUV in a straight line at 114 mph. Any significant corner would’ve ended him instantly.
In my mountainous region, I’d have barely gotten the chance to call 911 before a hairpin turned me and the car into steel spaghetti and human meatballs. Kid was beyond fortunate to have this happen in an area with miles and miles of straight rural road.
Seriously. Smart kid. Couldn’t have had his license more than a couple of years. A lot of kids (or adults) would’ve freaked out and went off the road or something terrible. Same with the cop though. Both of them really kept their cool.
@@Shadowkey392he could've also tried something like scraping along a barrier or wall to slow down, or try to spin it out of control in a free area, all very dangerous things that he shouldn't have done (unless there was no other way)
Yeah. Most people would've overreacted and overcorrected/had a worse outcome. Whenever faced with a pending disaster always stay calm no matter what and make clear decisions not control by panic.
The driver stayed so calm and that honestly helped them save him. I know a lot of people wouldn’t be able to stay coherent and converse with the officers to get this handled. This is absolutely next level amazing work by the officers.
But were about to use spike strips and send him in a huge slide, probably rolling the vehicle, the kid is lucky this officer did the obvious. When I heard it initially, I figured they'd just box the car in... The spike strip thing is insane.
This is the second story I've heard of the accelerator on a push-button start vehicle getting stuck, and nothing works at getting it to stop. I will never own one of these.
Well done all involved, the teen driver and the cops couldn't have handled this any better. Total nightmare for that boy but he remained focused and did everything right.
Even the mom explained so calmly and concisely. That was the most freak thing yet it couldn’t have happened to people better able to handle it. All of them, honestly.

More so - she buried the lead. I think what Lance is feeling is all that "set up" in the story when she should have just been like "The accelerator in this car is stuck please help my son he is at x location" lol But she was probably just reacting to her nerves by being overly calm or something who knows. The police in this are amazing for how they got him to stop btw.
It breaks my heart that the men who aided this young man in a life threatening situation are often overshadowed by the absolute lowest amongst the force. Well done gentlemen! Today is your day.
Even though the accelerator getting stuck is the biggest negative a company can have happen to their cars, i thought it was really cool how when the officer got in front of the car and tried to slow down to stop the car forcefully, the collision avoidance system forced the car to slow down to try and avoid hitting the officer. Obviously, it couldn't hold back the car all the way down to a stop and did hit the officer, but because of that system, i think this made that situation a thousand times more easy and safe than it would have been if the officer had to try and forcefully stop the car at over 110mph. Being bumper to bumper at that speed, so many things can go wrong so quickly for both vehicles. If they aren't constantly lined up with one another, then that force of the officer trying to stop the car would shift to the side of both of their cars and cause them to start to turn uncontrollably, and im not so sure that kid would've been able to control something like that if it were to happen. Regardless, he's kind of a bad ass in my book. He's only 19 and kept that car perfectly on the road at those speeds for an extended period, dodging any traffic that might've shown up along the way, all while following the officer's instructions perfectly. Glad this situation got solved when it did and as smoothly as it did.
I have a hard time believing that he tried putting the car in neutral because that should have worked. If modern cars are bypassing neutral as some sort of safety feature then that's one more big reason I never want a newer car.
@@juan2049 Most push to start cars wont turn off if you push the button while driving but will if you hold the button for awhile. I wonder if he tried that?
this is why cars from like, pre-2015 are about to start skyrocketing. the more stuff like this happens, the more people are going to want cars from that sweet spot of "modern amenities but manual controls."
Wait till you learn that throttle cables can snap, and a throttle can get stuck open, leading to the exact same scenario. Only there wouldn't be any collision avoidance system to start slowing the car down like there was here.

The idea there is too stop the tires off so the wheels can dig into the asphalt or ground. Either digging in will make the vehicle stop or the wheels being stripped away will.
Homer: [Using a trick he learned watching a certain movie] I saw this in a movie about a bus that had to *speed* around the city, keeping its *speed* over fifty, and if its *speed* dropped, the bus would explode! I think it was called... "The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down."
There is a phrase that pilots like. "Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing. Any landing where you can take back off again the next day is a great landing! I think this applies here. Props to the kid and the officers involved, they done good.

Great job to the quick thinking/acting officer's/deputies. Their quick thinking/acting is what helped save that young man's life and actually anyone else the vehicle could have unintentionally hit. The young man seemed to have handled the scary situation very well too. Also, his mom staying calm while talking to 911, helped in a massive way too. If she would have been panicking and screaming, it would have been way harder for the dispatcher to get the info needed to the LEO's in the area. The entire situation was handled very well by all involved.
Awesome talking between all individuals. Thank god a quick thinking trooper and an Officer on the line helped out. Young man had the best guardian angels
Great thinking and great work, Troopers. It's also amazing the Trooper had an "extra set of hands" (from Angels above, I'm sure) holding the wheel while he was holding a phone, typing on the laptop and driving and doing this at 100+ MPH !!!! True skills in a fragile moments. Glad no one was injured or killed. Again, great work, Troopers.

I'm amazed at how calm and collected the kid was, likely knowing he was going to die. That's a testament to a truly incredible character.
That happened to me one time, except I was only going about 70 mph. It's such a scary & helpless feeling. You are panicking, but trying to stay calm, while thinking 3 steps ahead because you're trying to figure out the best route where your car can continue going that fast, without hitting anyone or anything.
As a mechanic I truly never believe these situations. Brakes failed, e brakes failed, accelerator stuck, and shifter not working but everything drive train still works just fine!
mechanic now for almost 19 years, just glossing over the very obvious, if you look through alldata, this is 1000% not possible, this kid was ether doing this on purpose, or he is as dumb as a mothball. Honda even shows on the dealer network about pressing the brake cuts injector and press neutral overrides engine and trans when driving. this whole situation is painfully laughable.
We all know its supposed to work the way you 2 said. But the video shows 113 mph, all brake lights fully lit and no slowing down. Call it what you want but there is a reason Honda is asking for a "detailed inspection" and no that doesn't mean the normal state inspection. They want to take that thing apart completely. Computers can half-fail leaving some parts of the system running and other parts locked up. And there is a good chance the kid just has no idea how to use the manual controls and only knows what the buttons do. Or he can't take his eyes off the road for a single second to find them when going 113...going that fast is scary when you aren't ready for it.
@@freedustin First off, the MPH means nothing, no idea why that's being brought up. Secondly, where in this video does it show the brake lights on?????? all i see in this video and all the others is the running lights on (there is a difference you know) can clearly see at 0:01 5:08 5:25 and 5:42 there is no "brake" lights to be found, so please show me where that is.............. Thirdly, there is no "half-fail" (especially when it's still capable of going 113 MPH). ever since 2006 after the Toyota floor mat issue, all auto makes came together to put multiple safety measures in place so nothing like that happens again, I can clearly see this on Honda's dealer network, Alldata and the IATN network show if you apply the brakes, it kills the injectors (or puts it in limp mode) when it sees its not reducing speed, also pushing the park or neutral button in the center console puts it in neutral, and lastly, pushing and holding the start button for 3 seconds kills the engine. There is no excuse for this PERIOD!!!. There is only 2 things that happened here, this kid has the intelligence of a moon rock, or something aftermarket was at play here (which is gonna be like half of a percentage point) He either was doing this on purpose, or this person needs to never be behind the wheel of a car ever again. Honda wanting to see it is standard practice, but i know what they're gonna find..... nothing!!! and then Honda will wait and see if the mom tries taking them to court where Honda will bury them in legal fees and defamation, but that won't happen, and then it will come down to whether the local PD wants to press charges or not, or at bare minimum charge for damages to police property.
@@freedustin Another thing to add to this, lets say the brake switch failed and he is smashing the brake petal and that's why there is no brake lights, there is still a brake pressure and brake fluid sensor at the master cylinder, it will see this at the PCM and kill the injectors and put it in limp mode just with that data.
@@joshausterlitz3798 ahh I see. First time I saw at 5:08 I thought I saw all 3 lights lit. But they aren't. I was watching on my phone before. Now I got the big screen on and see he's not hitting brakes.

Just a FYI for everyone. You can disable the engine's ignition in Hondas by pressing the start button 3x or holding for +2 seconds. This holds true for all push start cars I've run into. SOme require more button presses or holding longer but they all have something similar. Read your owners manual.
Thats why cars come with an owners manual- to READ and learn about what you're driving. But who does that cover to cover?? We only thumb through it when we want to know something after the fact.
@permanentwaves4621 I can drive any car with a manual gearbox safely without needing to read the manual. I still encourage anyone to read the manual when they get in a new car, but it shouldn't be necessary to drive the car safely, it should only be necessary for proper maintenance and to learn about the creature comforts the car has to offer!
holding the button down would be my first instinct. I also don't buy the car wouldn't shift into neutral, what was he doing, pressing the light up indicator and not trying to shift?

The plus side, his easily articulable trauma gained from this (I said easily articulable, not actual) caused by a malfunction from the vehicle manufacture is gonna make him and his family rich because they're gonna settle quickly, as they should.
It's pretty much impossible for this to happen unless the vehicle is in very bad condition. The brakes on all vehicles are designed to be more powerful than the engine.
@@moabman6803 that's not true at all. In fact some vehicles wont even allow the brakes to depress if the throttle body is open, so that way you can't hit the gas and break pedal at the same time. High performance vehicles are the exception there usually.

14 mph speed difference is what is required to set it off. once they are below that it shuts off. so he probably slowed to a negative approach speed to the cop (cop pulled away for a sec) so the system disengaged but never returned to the speed difference required to activate again.

What manual with a clutch has a wire shifter? Dcts with paddle shifters obviously, but ive never seen a H pattern shifter with wire shifting. @LRM12o8
I'm happy no one was hurt and applaud the driver and the officers. But why in the world would they even take a chance driving it again when they had already had that problem once before?
Absolutely unlikely, yet it happened. Something in the electronics refused to listen to commands. There is no "turn off the key" any more. Transmission wouldn't go to neutral, start/stop button didn't shut the car off, and with throttle-by-wire, there is no mechanical link between the pedal and the throttle. The shop where that car was before has some 'splainin' to do!
Usually if you hold the button for a few seconds it should override and shut off the engine I always test stuff like that on a new car. My jeep renegade got pissy when I did it and my corolla does it and goes into neutral.
Its all of the electronics, like throttle by wire. This is definitely not the first time I've heard of this kind of thing, it definitely does happen. INFACT, it happened to me once (kindof), in a 2014 dodge ram 5500 tow truck, the accelerator stayed open even though my foot was on the brake pedal, lasted only about 5 seconds and then the truck slowed down, also right around that time it was all over the news that toyotas were having problems with excelerators getting stuck open.
I’m blown away by this. It really touched me and made me cry when I saw this kid was safe. Imagine how scary that was for all of them. Thank God it ended the way it did.
100% of the time this happens to drive by wire, if brakes or gear lever doesnt work. I my opinion cars should only fit mechanical brakes to cars. If you press the pedal it should move the pistons, and not some computer calculating. I get that technology needs to improve, but still i think that you should be able to manipulate controls of your car for yourself without computer. Like brakes and gears. There is no better failsfe than mechanically stopping the car by brakes or just putting your transmission to neutral. I've had one runaway and i just jumped on brakes and after 30 seconds I stopped completly from 90mph. And the engine was pushing breaking point rpms.
@@mikkomakela1997 Lets be real the braking ability of mass consumer cars generally isn't enough to overcome an engine that is set to +75% throttle input at highway speed. You'll overheat the brakes causing massive amounts of fade. Most people out there are using the cheapest pads they can get.. I have no idea what you were driving to be able to overcome full engine output at 90 MPH because that's damned near magical in capability. I am definitely interested in details because that sounds like a wild ride. Meanwhile I personally would just press the start button 3x or hold it for 2 seconds to kill the ignition on the engine and then brake normally so I could pull off the side of the road. BTW I've personally experienced a stuck throttle cable in my early 80s monte carlo. Stuck at about 3/4 throttle input and there's no freaking way I could of stopped that with just brakes. Killed the ignition and pulled over. I ended up replacing the whole cable because something internal was sticking.

@@ToolofSociety my car was BMW 525D E39. And it had diesel runaway. It took some time to stop but i was standing on the brake pedal with all of my tree legs. Now that i am thinkg about it, it is because its rwd and cars mostly use front brakes to stop and rear brakes stabilises.
I feeling enough people have dealt with their cars being “fixed” at the dealership to take it with a grain of salt. I feel that a lot of moms would’ve not let their children drive the car until it had been at least a few days of the car not malfunctioning. It wasn’t just an issue of the ac not working or a broken window.
Brakes easily overpower the engine, and putting the transmission in N always works too. If it's a push button start you just hold the button and it'll always turn off. When you hit the brake the ECM cuts the input from the throttle pedal on newer vehicles like this one. This is probably another case of bazillion floor mats stacked on each other.
It's possible he was riding the brakes and overheated them because it had an accelerator problem. I doubt it's the floor mat the accelerator pedal is run through sensors and the computer, sensors malfunction .

@DonziGT230 based on the police reports I call it a Honda failure. If the police can’t talk you into getting the damn car stopped there’s a problem. Multiple ways don’t work. It’s not intuative enough like I said

Someone else is like.. “but you have to hold the start button in for 3 seconds”. I’m sure the police told him that too. They sure as hell had him try it. No emergency brake working? My point is it’s not thus hard to kill a car from 1995. Today it should be even easier and more reliable.

press and hold the start/stop button to force the computer to shut down and with electronic parking brakes you press or pull the lever and hold and it will initiate an emergency stop.
There was another case just like this where nothing worked too... and a lot of people suspected that he just wanted a joyride with no consequences. I suspect something similar here
It makes sense. Car manufacturers program these buttons to ignore being pressed normally while driving at speed and program the forward collision assistant to always override the (received) driver input. They do that, because manufacturers these days think they now better what to do in any given situation than the actual driver themselves and the forward collision assistant was the system for which that notion held true in this situation. Every other system did not work as it should have, because the manufacturer was wrong in its all-too-common, but as we can see, dangerous hubris!
So what? The car doesn't just automatically veer off, not even at that speed, unless the wheels were seriously imbalanced or the steering geometry was seriously off.
If you hold the button down the engine will stop. It's really not that difficult. This is the case on our family car at least. Edit: I just looked this up for the Honda Pilot and it's the same. To shut the engine off in an emergency situation hold down the start/stop button for 2 seconds and the engine will stop. Straight from the manual.
They literally say in the video that he tried to turn it off and put it in neutral and it didn't work. Why the hell do people like you always comment without actually even watching the video? Talk about clueless
As a professional ASE Certified technician I am kinda confused as to how putting the vehicle in neutral didnt stop the vehicle, unless actually hitting the "neutral" button either doesnt actually put the vehicle into neutral or the neutral is "locked out" past a certain speed or throttle input. both of those theories dont seem to make much sense though. And EVEN IF both my theories were correct theres no way that engine could still overpower the standard brakes on that car. HOW I KNOW THIS: There is a test technicians can do to automatic transmissions that actually proves this. Its called "the stall speed test". essentially it requires you to put the vehicle in drive and press the brake AND throttle ALL THE WAY DOWN for a few seconds to get an idea of the "stall speed" on the vehicles torque converter to tell if its faulty. Its a standard diagnostic procedure. Well if I'm not going through the building while doing this it means the brakes can keep the vehicle stopped even though the throttle is all the way down which is why the whole "brakes wont stop the car" doesnt really fly here. Something seems REALLY fishy with this, and I'm either calling fake or a VERY unmaintained vehicle (AKA REALLY poor brakes which is the owners fault). More leaning towards the latter, if anyone finds more informaiton on this lmk because I cant seem to find more info past a few articles that say the same thing in this video.
As you try to slow the car travelling 100 mph at full throttle with the brakes the transmission will downshift to attempt to keep accelerating, by the time it gets back to 2nd gear it will have enough torque multiplication to drive through any stock brake. No sweat.
@@SirPsychonautic I appreciate the edit follow-up about the collision systems limiting throttle instead of applying brake. Good analysis and I learned a few things.
What’s bad is these days everything is so electronic that it doesn’t even take a mechanical failure to cause this. If the electronics decide to grow a mind of their own or if it’s hacked, this can be caused. It’s not even just electric cars but gas powered cars have all this electronic integration as well. Hopefully they figure out how to stop this kind of issue.
I want to see it recreated. Was there a short circuit? Was the throttle damaged? Or was it a situation where the driver thinks they are stepping on the brake yet actually flooring the car? And why couldn’t the vehicle be shutdown?

MY GOD thank you for saving this kid and everyone involved. I am a very experienced driver and that gave me the chills!
Yeah I was wondering how they were going to manage a clean stop like that bumper to bumper
I have a hard time believing that he tried putting the car in neutral because that should have worked. If modern cars are bypassing neutral as some sort of safety feature then that's one more big reason I never want a newer car.

As a mechanic, that is extremely unlikely that it was revving itself.
This isn't the first and it won't be the last. It could be as simple as a floor mat that jammed the pedal.
Usually if you hold the button for a few seconds it should override and shut off the engine
I always test stuff like that on a new car. My jeep renegade got pissy when I did it and my corolla does it and goes into neutral.
The revving was from the collision avoidance system engaging and disengaging

If you press the pedal it should move the pistons, and not some computer calculating. @@mikkomakela1997 Lets be real the braking ability of mass consumer cars generally isn't enough to overcome an engine that is set to +75% throttle input at highway speed. You'll overheat the brakes causing massive amounts of fade. Most people out there are using the cheapest pads they can get..

@@corvus5801It only ever seems to be teens that get into these 'accelerator stuck' type situations, so I wouldn't be surprised if you're right.
@@LRM12o8what are you on about. If the forward collision worked the brakes worked which means the kid could have stopped it
@@Jacobtheunwise that doesnt mean the brakes hadn't faded or had overheated.
Even more scary was the copper doing 120+ with no hands on the wheel 😲
So what? The car doesn't just automatically veer off, not even at that speed, unless the wheels were seriously imbalanced or the steering geometry was seriously off.
Turn the key off and or put it in neutral. People are so clueless its sad
New cars don't use keys. It's a button some also dont have gears sticks...my mom's Honda uses buttons
It was a push to start meaning there are no keys. You're clueless. Man...wow. try listening
HOW I KNOW THIS:
There is a test technicians can do to automatic transmissions that actually proves this.
Agreed seems suspicious especially when the autonomous braking was slowing the car down by itself at the end!
The stall speed test example you mentioned is when the car's stationary, right? In this case there's already momentum and probably brake fade.
Bull. The cars brakes will never stop any car at full throttle.
Great Mom staying calm and delivering critical details... 🌴
"Lol so my sons stuck in a car going 90 because the pedals stuck😅 "
Honda paid them well i bet😂. Thank God he was ok🙏
couldve been hacked car
Man. This JUST HAPPENED to another teen in county 17 A WEEK AGO!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Crazy that it seems to only be happening to teens lately 😨
NONE OF THE EVIDENCE shows the car malfunctioned. this is totally lies
I want to see it recreated. Was there a short circuit? Was the throttle damaged? Or was it a situation where the driver thinks they are stepping on the brake yet actually flooring the car?
And why couldn’t the vehicle be shutdown?
im impressed at the kid's ability to stay calm during that situation...
This cop is a real hero risking his life to save a civilian ❤❤❤❤
As a parent that was hard to watch, BRAVO to everyone involved for staying level headed
excellent problem solving skills
You save his life, and potentially many others that night!
Honda, do better!
Fantastic job by all involved. Sam kept his cool and this troopers did a wonderful job getting the SUV stopped. God certainly kept everyone safe! It was wild seeing the young man fly through that one area. Wow!
It's wild at around 2:42 the cop is talking on a radio, on the phone, doing something on the computer all while in pursuit.
Ive never seen so many lights and be so quiet 😂😂
