Love both your painting and teaching styles! Would like to see more animals and still lifes. Really any subject with your bright, striking work. You are an asset to the art world. BTW, we love, love, love British mysteries and dramas, and watch them almost exclusively.
It takes a lot of brass for a little beginner to attempt to copy this image! Yes, I've been painting for only a year. So at my 77th birthday I'll try again. Thanks for the inspiration!!!
Tom, thank you for a stunning portrait of such a majestic creature. What really fascinates me with your work - one of the things - is how you combine realism (subject) within an abstract painting (background). And though capturing important details knowing what to edit out or simplify for the sake of the artwork as a whole. And I love your bright and bold your colour choices. Thanks again
Hi Melanie, thank you for such a kind and thoughtful comment. I am pleased these are some elements you have picked out as these are things I am always striving for in my own work; that being an interesting mix of abstract and realism, and always looking to simplify in order to create a painting that has a life of its own away from the reference :) Thanks again for all your support. T
Hi Tom, I love your paintings, I hope someday to paint like you, so confident and knowledgeable. I will give this tutorial a try, I've been painting for a few months only but I recently discovered I love painting wildlife.
5 minutes in and Im already in awe Tom. I am so rigid with my colours if I have a photo its got to be exact.. how can I loosen up and throw colour to the wind so to speak??? I so envy artists who can add red yellow blue green to a simple brown object and come up stunning??? Best wishes from Western Australia
Are you now following in the steps of the late great David Shepherd? He was very good elephant painter in oils, he knew every wrinkle on an elephant's hide. He said never paint both the tusks on an elephant the same, because elephants are left and right handed, one tusk is always more worn than the other. They did holes in dry river beds to find water and debark trees, with their tusks. I liked your watercolour elephant.
Hard to beat the original master of elephants hey! I met him briefly once. a wonderful and passionate painter and wildlife conservationist. Greatly missed!
Another masterpiece Tom! When you started to paint was your style always this loose or did you start with realism? How long did it take you to find this really loose but exact style & did you find it easy, did it come very natural to you or did it take years of progression to find it? Have you earned your living always with your art? I just adore each & every painting that you do! You always know just how to start, each placement of each shade of colour & when to stop !😊. It looks like it has come so easy to you, but one never knows of the struggle each artist has gone through……….. cheers 😘🥰😊❤️💕😍
Hi Miriam. Usually online through Jackson’s art supplies. There is also Masters choice paper by baohong. I shipped in a load from Australia but they do have a European and also North America distributor too...it’s good when you want baohong but larger than A3 size :)
Thank you:) Great question...I guess I mean that they kind of skip and dance along page along if given the chance to. With a little bit of guidance but also a gentle hand they have a bit of a life of their own and sometimes do interesting little things I wouldn't have necessarily planned...it's a very personal thing as to how that feels for each artist I would imagine, but for me I find the slightly softer brushes, but not too soft, to have this lively feel to them :)
I love that you have chosen an elephant. To me “watercolour painting” is a huge elephant. I keep trying to understand pieces of it; colour, brushstroke, edges, composition… until you can put them all together, you just can’t understand the elephant. You seem to understand him pretty well!
Haha thank you!! Love this comment. Focusing on them indivisible helps, and eventually they all come together. I often liking to learning to drive (particular manual gears)…there’s a lot to think about at once. And enevitsbly in focusing on area yiu neglect the other - ie going to change gear we forget to steer or check out mirrors - in painting we focus on colour mixing or paint consistency and forget about drawing and tone etc Eventually certain things become second nature, and it all comes together :) Keep going!!:)

Lovely painting, Tom. A question: you often talk about your brushes being "lively" - can you please explain what you mean by this? Thanks!!
