Great tips from superb artists, all useful but I have to say the very first one speaks loudest to me - PAINT, PAINT, PAINT. I spend far too much time watching videos hoping to magically become an accomplished artist when, deep down, I know there are no short cuts - I would progress so much faster if I spent that time with brush in hand!
Thanks, Barbara! Oh, I totally agree...I know I’m guilty of that. Partly for me at least, because watching someone else do it and imagining myself doing it is a lot easier (and less frustrating) than doing it myself..ha!! But as you say, to really improve we need to explore, play and paint!
I liked Tori's comment about being happy if you're only 85% thrilled with your work sometimes. Because that's what it is a lot of the time LOL! Watercolor definitely took the perfectionist out of me... And that was a good thing!
Thank you, Tom, for the many helpful advice that these artists have shared. I especially thank you for your support while teaching on UA-cam to so many new artists like me. My favorite tip on this video is to know your materials and use professional grade when possible. I’ve accumulated so many things since I started painting, but have not experimented enough with them. I hope to do that now.
This was grand. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👩🏻🎨Liron is a favorite of mine. As well as you Tom. Now I have 6 new artists to check out. Favorite tip….hmmmm?? Too many to pick just one. Everybody gave such great tips. Thanks to all. One of my favorite watercolor artists is Bev Jozwiak. Your elephant reminds me of her style. Love it! Great idea Tom. Thanks.🙂
Liorn is great hey!? Such a generous sharer of info and soo enthusiastic! Great to hear you enjoyed the video so much, thank you. I will checkout Bev Jozwiak, thank you :) T
Video fantastico e stimolante!! Nn vedo l'ora di riprendere il pennello e tuffarmi con l'entusiasmo che ne ho ricavato! È stato bellissimo sentire questi grandi artisti parlare con semplicità! Grazie!
Chien Chung Wei (probably my favorite watercolorist) likes to use one palette for transparent paints and another palette for opaque colors. I've grown as a painter just by incorporating opaque colors. It's expanded my range so to speak. I guess that's my tip for other painters.
Oh yes...a wonderful artist! Certainly up there with my favourites. It’s a great tip. I think simply understanding that transparent and opaque have notably different qualities, and then understanding them both is a huge advantage. Thank you for an insightful comment! Kind Regards, T
What an incredibly inspiring video. All of these tips have their important place in watercolour. Thank you. Also, great choice to lead with Liron! He's a fabulous bundle of watercolour energy.
Tom, I just found your channel! Some years ago I took a photography class, black and white, and I recently selected five of those photos that I just loved. I'm now planning to paint them in watercolor. 50 years ago I had a watercolor teacher named Win Jones... He was quite famous, but that was before the internet and when I look I don't ever find anything about him. I'm sure he's passed away by now. His classes were exciting and he really fired us up about watercolor! Don't know if you've ever heard of him... But I am wondering if you were a teacher at one time You have a terrific vocabulary and are so well organized in your presentations. Bravo! And THANK YOU!
What a treasure of a video! I’ve been water coloring for only 1&1/2 yr and this is the best video I’ve discovered in my UA-cam art videos obsession. Thank you so much for the fabulous idea!
Oh wow this was so much fun, especially since I am subscribed to 2 of these artists already. You have introduced me to many new ones. Great tips from everyone & it’s definitely interesting to hear that so many gave some of the same tips but with different takes & suggestions. Thanks for sharing this wonderful collaboration with us!
Un gran vídeo, me quedo con todos los Tips aunque el más importante puede llegar a ser el de la planificación y también trabajo, trabajo y más trabajo.... Y todos. Jaja, graciasss ❤❤❤
Amazingly generous in spotlighting other artists, noting their various internet activities, making it possible for watercolor novitiates to dive a little deeper. I've picked one or two additional artists to learn from. Thank-you
Thank you for this video 😊 I’ve just discovered your channel and subscribed 😊I’m half way through one of Jane Davis’s tutorials on Skillshare and really enjoying it.
Thank you! This is an awesome video. All the artists were experts and unique in their methods and outlook. The first artist is the one that set me on fire!! Get familiar with the medium!! Paint all the time! I’m in!!!
I LOVE your tips from other artists! It's good to hear it's okay to make bad paintings because it's all part to the journey. Also, I have never really put thought into the part of the painting that has no paint, how it makes the painted part pop. Thanks for the fundamentals!!
Thanks so much, Lily:) I’ve never painted with just gouache but is on my list, definitely! I do occasionally use white, sometimes coloured, gouache on watercolours in select places too..
Hi Tom, thank you so much for putting that video together and thanks to the other artists for sharing their tips, adms a beginner I found them helpful and inspiring. I will definitely look up their work too.
A few months late watching this Tom, but this is fantastic advice from some fantastic artists. I think Liron's comment at the start of the video resonated most strongly for me. Paint, paint and keep painting...this is my biggest challenge, not painting enough or regularly enough and then getting frustrated when things don't go exactly how I wanted because it's not second nature to me. OK, off to paint!
So pleased you enjoyed it! And I agree, that single bit of advice is probably the key more than anything else! Little and often can work wonders for the feeling of second nature!!!:) Happy painting, and thanks for the comment :) T
Such an interesting, helpful and inspiring video! Backgrounds are my nemesis too so I found the tip of preparing a background first and using salt and clingfilm really useful, thank you for getting all those amazing artists together! 😊
Great tips! It's so useful hearing that different artists have different opinions on their best tip, and all have struggled with different challenges along the way - it inspires confidence to know that there's no one 'right' way and everyone is different (& might even give another tip on a different day!). I think the one about not expecting perfection resonates most - I'm new to this and all my paintings are pretty basic, but I learn something from every one!
This is so great to hear!! I think knowing that you are free to explore and play is such a good attitude! And yes, imagine if we asked everyone again they’d come up with different answer!!....thanks so much fir the comment . T
Thankyou Tom,what a brilliant idea! I loved meeting new(to me)watercolor artists. I love your paintings and all the introductions where so helpful.Maybe I won’t give up.hugs.Maddy
I’ve only just found you and very pleased that I have Tom. Your clear style really speaks to me. I’m a lockdown learner and really grateful to all the generous artists and the wonderful tutorials on offer and have recently realised that my poorer efforts are for subjects that have no appeal for me, so Jane’s final tip is my favourite. Only paint what you are drawn to.
So pleased you are enjoying the videos! Thanks for joining the channel :) Great tip, absolutely! With so many artists and paintings to look at, I think we can all be pulled to painting what we feel we "should" and forgetting that actually we will have the most fun and success when we paint what we are most drawn to..absolutely!!:) T
Dear Tom: I have found your video very interesting and motivating. The tips and advice given by the artists are highly valuable and Will help me improve my art for sure. Thanks for taking the time to do it for US. Will put them in practice right away. Thank you aguan !
I just recently found you here and I love your style of watercolor! ~ Not to mention your personal style in communicating verbally. I’m older in age and newer at art and I’m looking forward to following you to try to learn to produce something worth looking at. Thanks for what I’ve watched thus far.
Some great advice in there. I struggle with some basic areas but these tips pretty much covered most of them. If I had to pick one out, Karens wildlife background tips are brilliant. Thanks for getting the artists together.
Thank you so much for these wonderful videos! ...just playing around with your favourite colours - thats the best tip for me in this moment - doing this for 15 minutes made my day - thanks to all the artist in the video, thanks to you for this great idea! Greatings from Germany 😍😄
Interesting. One says plan, one says play. At the beginning play gave me anxiety attacks and chest pain. I needed a plan. Now when I'm blocked I play and find it very relaxing. Oh how we change along the way! Btw I am still a planner .😉
Absolutely...interesting to hear! I am a partial planner, sometimes proper planner, I do find it actual gives me the feeling of being more freedom to play when i've planned, as long s I don't feel I have to rigidly stick to the plan..balance between the two:) Thanks for a great comment! T
This is so so useful Tom, thank you, what a great idea. And thank you for your series on birds with the tips sections....I have recently discovered you and am learning so much from you. :)
Just got around to watching this video today. It’s so beautiful and inspirational, I actually wanted to cry! Haha! 🤭😅 This made me love watercolours even more! 🥰🥰🥰 Thank you! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
An excellent video, great to listen to the professionals, even for a relative newbie like me. I have watched videos by Liron and Paul, but the others are new to me, including you. So I'll definitely be checking out the other channels. Mind you my Watercolour UA-cam folder already has in excess of 1,000 videos in it, not that I've watched them all! I think Liron's advice of practice, practice, practice is the way to improve at anything, not just painting. However, on UA-cam it's too easy to watch way too much stuff and do far less practice. 😅
Hi ya Mark, so glad you enjoyed it! They are a good bunch hey. Haha sounds like my "to watch" list. I totally agree, no substitute for juts getting down to it. Easy to consume far more than we practice...all though a good bit of consumption has it's place!!:) T
What was your favourite tip of the bunch?? Or favourite tips? :)
T
Each and every tip is useful, but I too struggle with the backgrounds so I loved the tips given by Karen! And I love how you paint birds Tom👍
The bit about putting the painting aside when you're not sure, instead of trying to work on half dry, is pure wisdom!
The Moleskine notebook one - impossible to get all the colour mixing swatches on one sheet with a bigger palette!
I loved when Tori said 'less can be more' and 'you don't need to be 100% perfect....85% will do' :)
Hearing Liron say it's OK to make crappy paintings. In fact, you need to make crappy paintings to improve.

Yes. I love meeting artist!

Salt and cling wrap is great idea,
They do amazing and interesting things:)
I liked Tori's comment about being happy if you're only 85% thrilled with your work sometimes. Because that's what it is a lot of the time LOL! Watercolor definitely took the perfectionist out of me... And that was a good thing!
So much Thank you
