Indian Railways' priority on increasing AC coaches at the cost of general and sleeper coaches has left low income individuals bearing the brunt of travelling in overcrowded trains. TNM Reporters: Nidharshana Raju, Bhavani E, Haritha Manav, Samrah Attar spoke to scores of passengers in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

All these problems are created by the Congress government, fortunately now we have BJP government, they are trying to clear all the mess created by 60 years of Congress rule. This will take some time because of the volume of the mess created by the anti- national governments.
What we undergo in South is hardly anything. On a Sunday on February 18th 2024 I was in Varanasi contonement station waiting for Kasi Tamil Express. I had already travelled from Mau to Varanasi in an overcrowded train unable to breathe. It was only 2hrs so I put up. Friends had advised me to book only in AC sleeper and I thankfully heeded to it in the long train. But I was waiting in the contonement station since morning and I saw so many Vande Bharat trains to many prominent destinations. However what surprised me was when a local diesel train pulled in the station people even rushed inside the goods compartment. There was hardly place for people in any of the compartments to stand and many young men began to climb on to the Engine, roof tops of the train too. Most of us in the station were surprised and we even took photos. The train waited for many hours and when it began to leave the station the police began to lathi charge those in the train roof and engine mainly because we were all talking Photoes and videos.
Yeah there were many migrant workers. Even they are human beings and have a family to visit but are treated like animals and goods to be transported in wagons. It's a shame it happens in the PM's constituency. I understand these people are just used of traveling this way and they don't know their rights to decent travel.
Such train travel was probably common during Indian independence and partitioned days as revealed in Fiction books in Train to Pakistan, A Bend in the Ganges etc. but why does this happen within India the so called developed country?
Developed Country?? It is not & I don't think it is going to happen any time soon, unless there is a drastic change for good in the minds of Politicians, Civil Servants and General population..

Because in India people are asking for better services at zero fees. Not gonna happen. The people lathi charged are without ticket. If Indian Railways make Ticketed Entry at all railway stations, there will be no trouble like this at all. Just like none of the Metros have problem of overcrowding. In Chennai, there are no rush, cause they don't want to pay for the ticket. It's just that the Railway authorities are open hearted enough not to implement such a system. And it's tax Payer's money that runs these stations. I would rather want all people to pay for the service than sobbing online over the troubles of the people who don't pay for tickets.

Several years back I travelled from bangalore to New Delhi. Once the train crossed hyderabad, i could see a marked shift the compartment. People freely entered reserved compartment just like that. In MP they even pushed me and multiple people occupied by berth. TTR is invisible. The northern part of the railways is like a jungle
You should travel in Bihar. Then, MP would look civilized and polite.

When were Rajdhani & Shatabdi introduced in India ? Many decades back & have outlived the purpose they were brought into service . India is already behind by several decades in introducing better upgraded trains . Vande Bharat trains are filling this gap & are much needed

It is true that the sleeper coaches have been reduced to increase the number of ac coaches as a train can have a maximum of 20-25 coaches in total; An RTI should be raised to learn the change. The situation of unreserved coaches are pathetic. Vande Bharat is for upper middle class and higher class society - the government needs to equally focus on middle class, lower middle class and poor. Senior citizen concession is removed and the government is earning more than 5800 crores in 4 years. Passenger trains are converted in to express trains without improving time and number of stoppages - just to increase the fare; Likewise express trains are converted to super fast trains without improving time and number of stoppages - just to increase the fare. The poor and the needy are not taken care of first.

Failure to get decent broadband, ICT gadgets and a work from home strategy for desk jobs is the cause for this outdated mess. It's not the BJP govt's job to dictate modernisation and business plans to all organisations! Also Congress has no better solutions than the former party.
Well, Railways need to earn too. They cannot be subsidised all the time. And Railways need to earn too. The Railways is run by Tax Payer's money. The Railway Workers need a hike in Employment too. They need to earn higher. So, that is why profit is indeed needed. We are not planning to be Cuba for god's sake. Gone are the days of Freebies and Subsidies. The focus is on Vande Bharat because Vande Bharat is poised to uplift the journey experience of tax payers who have the capacity to travel in those trains. The Government also has Amrita Bharat to cater to the lower middle class and below, however, it is to be remembered that new things will always have new charges. People expect clean railway stations, quick service and a comfortable journey. I travel with Migrant Labourers who travel by Third AC and are not complaining. These people who are taking a long distance journey in general coaches are blatantly doing so knowing that the journey will not be comfortable. India cannot and must not cater to subsidize for a section of society who want to travel from A to B without thinking about safety, comfort and prompt service. India needs to cater to those who want comfort, safety and prompt service and are ready to pay for it. I suggest that no concession must be allowed and Indian Railway must run fully with a motive of profit. There was a time when Indians used to complain about dirtyness like the ladies in the video are complaining. Well, they have to pay more to have that comfort level.

Priority of one train over other makes passengers wait for hours inside the train.
India will develop only if media shows people's problems. Only problems can be solved, not 'all is well' policy. If expensive trains are reduced and common man's trains ( passenger, fast, super fast) are increased with more general compartments, the single track can be effectively used. The railway budget that southern railway has been receiving is way less than drmand in last ten years.
Yes, it is true that it is difficult to get a sleeper ticket, due to the reduced number of sleeper coaches.
And yes previously we had only 3 three-tier AC coaches and currently we have 5.
The two-tier AC coaches have been increased from one to two....
I had JEE Mains exam on 6th April in Kolkata. After exam me and my dad was returning home. We went to Kolkata Station at first as we were sure that there was an express train scheduled on that day. I even checked a week before and it was there. But, when we went to the ticket counter they said the train was not scheduled. I checked and it wasn't showing. Even the locals said that there was supposed to be that train on that day. What the hell, Indian Railways? Why wasn't this change in the schedule of a major train on the route not notified to the daily passengers before the change?
At the end we were forced to make the journey with connecting trains from Ranaghat. Our first train got into Ranaghat 13 minutes late. If it was a few more minutes late we would have missed our connecting train from there. We needed to run. Didn't even got a chance to get to the foot overbridge. We got of the platform and got onto the next one.
And ofcourse both of those train were overcrowed. All the fans were not working properly and it almost felt like 47 degrees Celsius due to high humidity in Bengal. My dad is 65 with heart problems and he had to went through all of that. We didn't manage to get seats for the most of the journey on the first train and also for a significant portion of the second one.

People from northern India face inconveniences too in trains but the comments here is blaming them instead of the railway and government. All such hate comments are from Southern language speakers who blames only Hindi speakers because of the collective hate they have which is taught by their politicians and leaders in prior history. We don't hate people based on language, that kind of fun making is what northies do. As a south person, we get a lot of migrant north indian workers in our train. They are ill mannered, not clean spitting here and there, the stench, the whole environment is made into scary scenerio for local regular commuters. People speak from experience, not imagination. If you have travelled in general compartment in kerala, you will know what i'm talking about. How our people travel, how they travel. This is not about hate. This is about basic manners and cleanliness.

When railways was introduced one was passenger train and the other carrying letters and luggage called mail.general compartment passenger trains are now removed.long distance express trains sometimes do not stop in junction.short distance travellers find it very difficult.
Railways were have lot of job openings but govt is not willing to fill them on time

In year 1970 i was travelling from Kozihkode to Cochin by train at 1000 hrs in the night. I travelled in third class and it was so crowded i could not even climb inside. I spoke the inspector and he agreed with me to climb 2 class compartment which i did. Even that was full but i could stand. The inspector came to take my pay ment for 2 class. I gave him the ticket i had and as i was giving to him it flew out. I was forced to pay an amount 5 times the normal since i had no ticket. The inspector says he di not see my ticket. I had so little money. Luckily the crowd paid.

Yes, I agree with this statement but the railway also increases Amrit Bharat trains for non-ac travellers which help to reduce the crowd from normal trains to shift them to Amrit bharat. It takes little bit of time to make these non-ac train production.

There is a place for everything in a growing country & infra work has to happen simultaneously. Certainly not just one work in one time period followed by the next work later.
First, there is limitation to a certain technology, landline can not beat mobile even if you put lot of money and effort into it. Second, the base, You can not just build 5 more floors on top of your decade old two storied house. The planning should be from the start otherwise you need to demolish everything and start from scratch. Third, there is no scope for rebuilding things when it is in use and there is no alternative.

Condition was similar way back in 1960s. I travelled by Punjab Mail from Itarsi to Delhi in May 1961 in III class. Could not go to the bathroom due to crowd.

You mention the government is focusing on AC couches but there is demand in ac couches too.
Solution is not increase SL and gernal couches.
The real demand is need more trains with both ac and non-ac couches but indian railway tracks have a big traffic india need more track to run trains, hope that new freight corridor will decrease traffic on tracks
govt is only pushing on vande bharat trains which have no use right now as the tracks for the most part are eligible for 110 to 130 kmph with some exceptions...We need more anthodaya trains, more unreserved coaches on popular routes..this might help reduce the congestion in reserved coaches..3AC has become the new sleeper and sleeper coach is the new unreserved coach nowadays
All this heavy uncontrollable rush is because of the underdevelopment and lack of jobs in BIMARU/Hindi belt regions. The MPs of those states only care to run trains to some Metro city, but never care to create jobs in those states.
Why can't railway include ticket scaning system just like the one used in metros ?

Even if Indian Railways is ready to invest in additional tracks, land acquisition will be THE biggest road block to complete it in time. On top of that regional politics will make project timelines to push it further in future.

Our basic revamping of Indian railways is never done, but building a bullet train between 2 cities at the cost of 1L crores is utter waste.
Even middle class will not travel in bullet train instead use Air travel.

Vande Bharath is a total failure. Price is too high - not worth it. Seats backrest is not comfortable.

Agreed that we need more sleeper/unreserved coaches but Vande Bharat are running full capacity. What world are you living in ?
Give general tickets for express trains as reserved tickets to eliminate overcrowding and to not allow general passengers in the sleeper and other classes. The unreserved coaches must only be on passenger trains and run more push-pull trains as passengers. There can be special long distance trains with only general coaches if required and the seats should be through reservation only or through online booking at the window counters.
You should have also added Vande Bharat Train cost, Tickets fare, Occupancy Vs Revenue over the General, Sleeper class coach cost Vs fares earned, passengers travelled etc by adding Monthly pass + Ticket sold on those routes.

At present there are 1450 AC coaches and 3873 Non-AC coaches running in southern railways owned trains. This is the reply I got for my RTI on 18.03.2024

The North Government needs to provide basic trains for their migrant workers who vote for them in the saffron States.
The main reason for local trains crowding is because of bad interior designs, most of the space has been taken by seats if we remove them then there would be less crowding, we should adopt metro seats design

they need to chagne the layout of trains to accomodate more passengers. They should have sitting seats for lesser price, since a seating only carriage will carry more passenger. Also they should increase the number of trains as well.
I have witnessed multiple times overcrowding even in AC cabins. And it all happens with the gracious consent of the TTEs whoc charge few hundred and gi ve them a ticket. That makes us a fool who paid 2000 for a seat and now cant even mopve our legs or reach the toilet. If its day time, we cant even sit comfortably in the seat. This is happening even in 3AC.
Compare ticket prices with those of other countries. People are not willing to pay for comforts. So why complain?
Almost very few trains operate in TN in many important routes where the crowd is always high.
The train for poor people is Modi Bharat Express.

Not much difference in Railway working style regionally, I feel same being a north Indian resident. While travelling in South I felt coaches are new and we'll maintained whike we pay equally but quality of service is very bad.
Fact is our basics are not right and we are claiming to be Vishwa Guru and dreaming of bullet train.
More coaches turned to 3AC Coaches reducing Sleeper coaches by 1/4 th.
PSUs primarily aim public service while there is NO common welfare attitude in government working.
We have many diversities and that authorise is to blame each other while cause of problem lies some where else.

Even the railway employees are suffering mentally and physically due to huge shortage of staff, u can ask any employee near you about the pathetic condition of work
Especially Bihar, Orissa,assam,UP,and Maharashtra side even there is no security in trains and regarding Toilets in trains you can imagine how much hygiene

Indian trains are overcrowded because the population is huge. Many people believe in producing 3-9 children. What else do you expect?

Trains are cheapest public transport and maintain time so that many like to travel. Most important to keep in mind population-a very large numbers migration- lack of facilities - not increased facilities - not able to understand the difficulties , complexities and dangerous consequences of population- no proper family planning. Few states are aware of population but a considerable number of states have not taught of consequences of population or did not create awareness of population . Because of population poverty ,lack of facilities , unemployment, and more. what we see is sample only. This itself difficult .If population awareness not created and not controlled , only knowledgeable persons knows the consequences .

True. Trains are very less and safety, security standard are abysmal. Central government only have control on Railways since it is in central list. Compare to north many south india states don't have much train tracks. For global warming, cleaner energy public transport is important. State government should demand about this
Whatever we demand...we won't get not even for our next generation if BJP comes for the third time....coz we will never vote for them and they will never do anything good to southern states...Example AIMS in Tamilnadu....They are following tit for tat policy in a democratic country where people can elect whomsoever they want....they need only our tax money and votes...nothing else...once you come to power in a union, people of all states should be benefitted...not a few where you can get votes....that too coz of evms and horse trading of MLAS and MPs...

All coaches must be Air conditioned. There must be more trains that entirely have general compartments.
All coaches must be under cctv survilliance preferably at the doors.

Railways have reduced the sleeper coaches in most long route trains.............increased the AC coaches.............general coaches are also reduced......plus most seats are alpocated to Tatkal quotas..............
They are focussing on money. And not on people's issues....
The input cost for railways keeps on rising throughout years due to inflation like cost of Diesel, Electricity, Salary and pensions of all the railway employees, cost of new trains and engines. But railway is not allowed to raise the ticket prices of General and Sleeper coaches at the same time. Due to this they are overly dependent on fares from AC coaches to cover and compensate this ever increasing gap which increased due to inflation and also providing cheap fares for general and sleeper coaches. Also since independence due to the politics of keeping the railway fares low railway never had enough money to lay new tracks on which it could run new trains. While the passengers travelling have increased upto 500% since 1947 the new tracks to run new trains to accommodate people have only increased upto 25%. These is a limit to the maximum number of trains which can run on the limited number of tracks and due to this you have this problem. And mind you laying new tracks is the most expensive part of railway infrastructure, announcing and running new trains is much more cheaper than laying new tracks throughout the network and this is exactly what most of the railway ministers were doing finding short term fixes to long term problems. The fact that most of the time this basic fact is overlooked in news reports tells a lot about the lack of research to find the root of the problem. Indian railway doesn't have a choice they have to launch new vande bharat trains so that they can earn extra money to keep the ticket prices in General and Sleeper classes as low as possible by cross subsidy. Problem won't be solved untill new tracks are laid you need to make single line double and double line quadruple if you want trains to run on time.
Most people don't know that IRCTC is the biggest lose making unit. There is no revenue generated from the local train. Why would govt invest in that. And personally our govt is doing great job by launching vande Bharat, bullet train. Atleast it will be hygiene and changes image of our Bharat. I know people will hate me for saying this.....but hate me no problem this is the actual truth. Thank you
Modi should see this and help these people by proving good comfortable ride. But his focus is only on please rich Indians who gave him good money! He does not care about poor and middle-class people!
If this issue of overcrowding is not addressed immediately, even the AC coaches will be taken over by general ticket holders. We already see this happening during festive rush.
Vande Bharat trains are good but I don't understand why govt. doesn't want to prioritize increasing capacity by laying new tracks, it will increase the top speed of exisitng trains and accomodate new trains for the rush.
Because they are incompetent. That’s obvious from the last 10 years. This is an example of things going from bad to worse.
