Got that exact bike in April 68 for my 14th birthday. Best summer of my life. 60mph with a tailwind. Funny…I remember that shifting problem.

Regarding the second gear issue... I had one of these. They made the mating dogs on the gear too short and they barely engaged from the factory. Once they rounded off a bit that was the end of second gear. Getting a new gear doesn't solve the issue. You need to extend the dogs on the gear. I did that by welding onto the existing dogs and machining it so the sides were correct and the dogs were longer.

My brother bought one brand new in 1965. I was 7 yrs old. My brother thought he died and went to heaven when he bought it. People forget in 1965 all bikes were pretty much slow. A 250 was considered a big bike.
