Hertz Sued for Mistakenly Reporting Customers’ Rental Cars as Stolen

  • Hertz is being sued by customers who say they were wrongfully stopped by police after their rental cars were reported as stolen by companies owned by Hertz. Pennsylvania police officers told Saleema Lovelace she was driving a stolen car from Dollar Rent A Car, which is owned by Hertz. Although Lovelace told police her rental car receipt was on her phone, she was arrested. Nick Wright says he and his daughter were detained during a vacation in Georgia when cops drew their guns on them after a car he rented from Thrifty, which is also owned by Hertz, had been reported stolen.

The fact that she went to jail and the police didn’t search or reach out for any verification while the Georgia cops did, speaks even more volumes to the situation. She deserves everything she asks for.

As a former Hertz manager level 2 employee. Dollar and Hertz and thrifty. There's a theft package that Hertz branch manager of the location or district who run max 4 locations submit a stolen report package document that they have to fill out and report it to upper management. So to keep rental %down they will at times report the car stolen to keep the utility rates down. I used to rent on las Vegas strip. Also, it hasn't been reported as much but other rental companies ALSO jump the gun on reporting cars stolen. I know of police agencies which won't accept a stolen report from a car rental agency without them filing an affidavit for that very reason.
