Thank You Sir, you just saved me $90 on a new lock and handle set !! About a week ago I purchased a Kwikset front door handle set, because my 17 year old set was very difficult to open the door. Your video was spot on!! My latch was the problem, so I went to Lowes bought a new one for just $8 bucks and that's it. No need to replace the entire set, returning it un opened back to Home Depot. Thank"s again brother and UA-cam !!
That’s awesome Ponyboy!! So glad the video was able to help you. Thanks so much for taking the time to write me, made my day. Feel free to show support by subscribing. I’d love to have you on board to watch my next diy ! :) Mike
My fairly new hardware with a "lifetime" warranty (weiser) started doing this after less than a year. Easy fix and thank you for the easy to follow guide. Let's see how long this one lasts.
When popping the plate off the inside of the door, start prying from the bottom first. That way if you do slip and ding the door, it won't be as noticable when you're standing at the door and looking down at the handle.
THANK YOU! My office door has been driving me nuts and the latch not retracting fully is what I found to be the problem, just as you show. But I didn't know WHY, and your clear video shows my problem as well.
That’s Awesome! So glad my video helped out, and thanks so much for taking the time to send me your thanks. Makes my day. Feel free to help out by subscribing and following my channel. Hopefully you’ll enjoy watching me in my other videos :)
Thank you so much! Without your video, I would have never taught to call Weiser, and it was covered under the lifetime warranty. I installed the new parts and it works like a charm!
Thanks for the video. I dragged this problem for more than 6 months thinking how am I gonna fix this. Stumbled upon this video and got it done in 20 mins and in 8$ .. thanks again
I have a stuck latch too but the whole slider plate is pushed way back and won't spring thing is missing. How can I release the latch to get the door open?
Thank you for this video. My latch would not retract at all, so I had to cut it with a hacksaw blade. Fortunately, I have a lifetime warranty on Weiser locksets. But you saved me a lot of frustration. Thanks again!

Thank you very much, Mike. I sincerely appreciate it. it costed me $5.39 to purchase it instead of changing the whole Handleset! Once again, thank you....
Today I took this handle off first time in my life and finally see why it’s not closing properly. Ordered the new part, can’t wait to replace it in a few days.
Thank you for showing and explaining everything so clearly! Fortunately/unfortunately I had already had some experience taking door handles off for various locking reasons so I was already partially familiar with the inner workings. That wear was so easy to see once apart! Also thank you for including the lifetime guarantee aspect! Free repairs no cost yes please
Thank you so much, had this exact problem with my writer lock and this step by step made it possible to do the repair myself and extra bonus for the tip to get the free replacement part! 😊
Great video, thanks! Our bathroom door latch doesn't retract enough and sometimes makes the door very hard to open. Is there any way to adjust the latch, so it wouldn't stick out so far? It's always been like this, so I don't think it is from wear, but maybe from incorrect installation. 🤔 I hope you are all safe from the fires!
This video does demonstrate a very common problem, and a simple DIY hack... good if you are preparing to sell your home, but not really a long term repair. The parts in the handle also grind up along with the part in the latch... NEW latch on OLD mechanism will not last.... BOTH would need replacing. The only long-term SOLUTION is replacing with a quality lever x lever handle... and never one with that crescent shaped shaft. Kwikset ( and in Canada, certain WEISER product are the SAME LOCK ) do have a lifetime warranty..... so if you call their toll-free number, you get brand new ick. The company has superb customer service, and cheap prices... so I can not knock any company that honors their warranties without friction. MANY brands of this product type are long-discontinued, and the new ones are totally different internally, no repair kits for most. If a repair kit for both the HANDLE and the LATCH can BOTH be replaced, you will be good for another 6 months to 2 years. Rinse/repeat. Baldwin ( Kwiksets' twin sister company ) also will ship a repair kit, if the product can be properly identified. My clients often just bring those to my shop, we order up the parts and charge labor only. It is the only brand I have patience to deal with, because it is the best of the product types, earning a "MEDIOCRE" rating. The rest from Schlage, Kwikset, Weiser, Dexter by Schlage, and others are abhorrent. Tips n tricks are fine, but these will always fail. The product type is generally called "grip handle tubular latch-set". It should not exist, imho. The purpose of these is to look like a MORTISE lock.... without the MORTISE mechanism that lasts upwards of 120 years! No exaggeration you will find 120 year old grip handle mortise locks on 1900s homes all over the country, still working like new. The focus lock of this video demonstrates the typical Home Depot/Lowes product lineup.....Millionaire taste on a hundredaire budget.
My issue is that the latch doesn't come out far enough, I have the new latch, and I will attempt to DIM tomorrow. Thanks much for your instructions! *:-)
We have bought two of their entry door locks and both have ended up this way. The second lock has lasted two days and will be going back today. I’ll be going to a different brand.
It is not your fault, it is the product... see my other reply... so when the newer, new one breaks, you have an option... go to a locksmith, and find all the better products that are not at Menards, Tractor Supply, Princess Auto, HD or Lowes.
Thank You for the video. Was about to go buy a new $140 door handle. I got the handle off and messed with it and put it back together and it works again. However the latch sometimes gets stuck in the open position. Can you lube it up to be smooth or will that mess it up?
My pleasure. So glad you found the warranty tip helpful !! Hmm, that’s a great idea. Couldn’t hurt putting some on the new latch before instal. Thanks for sharing that. All the best! Mike
Hi Jonathan! Glad the video helped. Are you referring to the door being closed with no means to open it now that the handle has been removed? If that’s your problem, just use a screw driver to mimic the door handle mechanism to pull back the match. Or slide the one side of the handle back in and you should be able to use it in the same fashion as when it’s all screwed together. Hope that helps. Let me know if that’s not what you’re referring to, or if you have any other questions. Cheers! Mike

Oh shoot. Sorry to hear your latch is so stubborn and giving you that much grief! You definitely want to hammer the latch out and not further in. Have you tried sticking a screwdriver or rod through the latch and using that for leverage when pulling it out? Maybe you can even combine that with some hammering or a large c-clamp to force it out?
how do you get the metal shim onto the unit? I got the rectangular plates off easily enough, but the metal shim seems to be too small: it does not clear the tip of the latch that actually moves, even thought I think I see holes that are supposed to line up with pegs on the body of the latch also, my metal slider seems to get stuck 3/4 of the way to the 2-3/4 mark. any thoughts?

Thank you. That did the trick for me. The fact that they made that part of the latch with such soft metal is a real design flaw.
Awesome. So glad this video helped you. Thanks for the comment!
And yeah you think there would be something stronger they could use!
I was thinking that too, but you want the cheap part to be the one that wears…
They do this so the common uneducated consumer will just buy a new doorknob set.

Hi Brian,
It popped off easily with a screwdriver.

Really? That’s interesting. Might be worth removing it and seeing if the latch has any defects or premature wear on it.
