So my door latch wouldn't fully release the latch, it would only come in 80%. It looked exactly the same as yours but wasn't as worn. I flipped it over the SPINDLE like you did, no changes In my case the latch was crooked, your's wasn't...? Upon better inspection the thumb latch lever (part that hits the CAM on the SPINDLE) rides on a pin with the spring, one side of the pin came out. I used carb or brake cleaner to get rid of the grime and reassembled pounding the pin back in place. I used a penetrate fluid similar to WD40 to lube it up and works great now. I was going to go to Home Depot to buy a new one but thought I'd drink my coffee and spend 5mins at UA-cam University and found your video. YOUR VIDEO INSPIRED ME TO DO THIS AND I FIXED IT IN ABOUT 30mins! THANKS!!! GREAT VIDEO Now I can spend $50 on something else at home depot! LOL
Excellent video! Thorough without being too drawn out. Multiple camera angles and clean shots. Thanks for the how to, the lubricating worked for our door!
Yes indeed, a fine video explanation of how the thumb latch mechanism works. Close inspection showed that my spring pin had slipped out on one end. In hindsight troubleshooting a half-working thumb latch pin issue is easy: there isn’t a consistent pressure (spring tension)when actuating the thumb latch. Now with the pin in place there is a constant ‘feel’, the thumb latch feels brand new. Excellent video.
Hi Mike! Thank you so much for this video. I was able to use my dremel to slightly smooth out an internal worn area in my door handle. For now, it works perfectly. Your suggestion saved me probably north of $175 to replace the whole thing! Kudos!
Oh my this is brilliant. I think the easiest way to see if this is your solution is if your inside handle gets stuck one way and not the other, this would be a very straight forward fix!
I removed the door knob, which is on the inside, and lubricated it and it works like a butter. I didn't even have to remove the handle that is on the outside. Btw, I used white lithium grease (by Liquid Wrench) and works very well. Thank you very much as your video really helped as I wouldn't even have thought that lubricating it would work. It's simply impossible to think of a life without Google and UA-cam is just amazing. :)
Great video, thank you. So the trick is to disassemble everything , to check and lubricate. I removed a lock partially, cleaned up and lubricated and it was not enough, faced the same problem #2 as you did. I'll have to remove handle as well and check there.
Hi there, thanks for this video. Gives me some idea, however, my doorlatch will not turn, so it will not let me open my front door. I took off the internal knob, but still cannot get it to open. Do I have to remove the external latch as well? I dont see a screw outside to remove it TIA for your help
The inside knob worked great but I was having a lot of trouble with the outside handle. I didn't have a clue of how to approach it until watching y0our video. Turns out my metal pieces weren't worn so I just took the mechanism apart and lubed the heck out of any of the movable pieces. Works like a charm now. Thanks for showing the way!
Looks good! Easy fix when you can access the inside of the door. I have one that is keeping us locked out....gotta work that penetrant in from the outside.
If you don’t have this style door handle like me. I fixed mine by replacing the latch with another door latch from in my house and now both work great with no issues
Thanks for the video - went into my latch and found that my flange was a little worn, also, but the bigger issue was the the pin had slipped out of the hinge for the thumb button, causing it to articulate off-center. Re-aligned, lubed up, and put back together, and door latch works great.
This happened to me too. The tiny pin infront of the thumb plate came out. Can the pin be put back in to make it work without buying new parts? Who can help?
Great video. I had the same problem, where it was hard to press down, but not for the same reason. I put the hardware together so I would see how it functions and discovered that the bottom screw for the inside knob, if over tightened, interrupted the function of the handle, preventing the handle from completing the cycle of turning the latch. In addition, while removing the inside knob, I discovered a small piece of plastic that I could not figure out where it belong. So I left it out. Maybe it was from a previous installation.
@@TomahawkDIY I wanted to follow up to say that after watching your video I followed the same steps and FIXED my door handle. I sprayed the parts with silicone lube before putting everything back together and now it works like new ! I can’t thank you enough. Kudos, Sir.
My problem is different. It depresses easily enough, but won't spring back. much like the later problem. But it's not lube, it's very easy to move. Just no spring action. But it's ok from the knob side.
Hello. our thumb latch / handle fell off, we have exact same handle. Do you think it's broken and I should purchase a new handle? Please help me out. Thank you.
So it doesn't mater which side that half moon piece is on ? I bought a new lock mechanism and now it only opens when I lift up on it. (the kind of handle that looks like a flat letter s. I've taken it to the lock smith twice but there recomendations didn't work.
Thanks for a nice video ! My latch sticks and doesn't come out all the way. I would have thought you would have lubricated everything first. Why is WD-40 not advised ? I will try with Silicon Spray today ! :)
@@TomahawkDIY Thanks, I took out the lock pieces and sprayed with silicone and everything was loose. The problem was that the latch head doesn't come out far enough ( only half way ) and I don't see how to adjust it. So, I removed the plate which the latch head goes into and made it come out an 1/8" to have a little better contact with the latch head. I don't like it but better than buying a whole new lock. I don't know if the latch head piece can be replaced ?
Finally, a video I can show my landlord
You are one of the best videographers on UA-cam. We are able to see everything perfectly.

The wd-40 silicone did the trick and I didn't have to take apart the latch. Thanks for the idea of using it
I read your comment and I thought I'd give it a try and sure enough, WD40 did the trick. Thanks!!!

@@TomahawkDIY What kind of lubrication would you recommend that has stay power, yet doesn't leak out of the handle?

For me just lubricating the mechanism worked. Thank you for the info.
Super helpful, thanks so much! It's obviously something I'd look up often but when you need it, you NEED content like this.
Glad you find it helpful. Thanks for the kind words
Great video. It took me longer to watch it than it did to actually fix my latch. That's how easy it was. Thank you!
Glad it helped!
excellent video and explanation - you gave me the confidence to try to fix my door handle myself, and I did it! Thank you!
Wow! Great job!
You're welcome, thanks for watching!

Thanks for the feedback 😊
Bea-u-ti-fully and clearly produced video!!!! OMG! Wish they were all so well done & explained.

wow so glad I found this video, I'm going to take apart my latch right now and hopefully it's the same or just as easy to fix issue! thank you!
Hope it works for you!

Hope it works for you
Very cool Thx
Great
What do you do when it completely falls out of place and won’t even open the door
Call a locksmith lol
Can I use wd40
So, couldn't you just have sprayed silicone lubricant the first time and that would have unstuck the whole mechanism?
A dab of grease at the contact point would reduce friction and wear.
Well well looks like I found my problem
Mine was stuck, and my kids pressed it so hard that now it’s loose
That’s what happened to me this morning 😭 did you end up replacing the whole handle?
@ yessss my son snapped a piece inside had to get a whole new knob
@ I just replaced mine right after it happened….annoying
🙏👏👏👏

Silicon spray attracts dust. Why not use graphite? I would rub some pencil lead on it or get some graphite powder.
