My husband saw an IUD and decided, when we're done having babies, he would rather get a vasectomy, as opposed to my having something inside me. I thought it was very sweet.

About a month later I said it was time to get my mirena redone and he says “what’s that?” I explain…he goes “that’s what that is?! Does it feel like fishing line?” I’m like “maybe? Anytime I hear IUD I think of the absolute misery it was to have one placed, the subsequent pain and then the complete terror it was to have it removed. Although removal was smooth, I was already so traumatized by the amount of careless doctors and normalization of pain as a woman that I was so sure this too, would be another super painful thing that I’d have to experience while my doctor would assure me is normal and that I should just be grateful I’m not giving birth because that’s WAY worse.

I dont understand why women can't be given some sort of anesthesia for this procedure, even if it's a bumbing injection, something. I refused to get one because of this.
On another part of the body. Breast biopsies, OH MY GOD! 3 shots of lidocaine, and they took 4 tissue samples. First ever biopsy I was knocked out because the size and location of the lump. This time, I was awake. And the placed a clip, today I had a savi scout clip placement, again just with lidocaine injection. Put us into a twilight sleep, the biopsy and first clip, i felt a tissue sample being taken and I felt a nasty pinch with the clip insertion. Today with the savi, it wasn't to bad but stop making us feel things we shouldn't have to feel. It's torture. The biopsy they demonstrated the sound of the biopsy gun thing that took the tissue samples so I would be prepared and not jump. The sound scared me more than the procedure.

I had an awful fat shaming gynaecologist who told me ‘that was my only option because I was fat’ (nice lady), it wasn’t, I went on cerazette & I’ve been on it years with no issues.

I had the copper one for about 8 months and every time I bent over it would stab my uterus and I would be in extreme pain, it was so painful it would make me vomit and I would start bleeding heavily. Went to my GP about it and they said I was "imagining it". On the 3rd trip to the GP I refused to leave the office until it was removed. Took my GP 45minutes to remove it, it was completely covered in over grown scar tissue, couldn't even tell it was a coil there was so much tissue attached to it. Turns out they had put in one meant for women who previously had children. It also made my period go from 3 or 4 days to 10 - 14 days! I would never recommend this to anyone.

[Data expunged] -- and then the news came out that a few women had died from that model (dalkin shield or something?). Mom had to hunt for a doc willing to take it out again. Apparently what saved her is that the doc who installed it used one size too big (Mom said it also hurt), so it didn't move.
They were told to wait a while before conceiving, but wound up with me almost immediately, so that anecdote is closely tied to my personal history. If circumstances had been slightly different, I wouldn't even be here.
It's also made me super wary of IUDs, though intellectually I know they've had nearly half a century to troubleshoot the models and work out the kinks, so I expect they're unlikely to wind up with the same problem.

I kept getting pricked by my partners and they ended up getting it trimmed multiple times. It also depended on what was going on with her, like her cervix would sit higher or lower at the beginning, middle, post orgasm etc. Iirc its normal for the cervix to hunker down after an orgasm. @ell4avis 9 місяців тому +113

But also whilst they might be too long, getting them cut toooo short can mean they don't "flex" with pressure and instead are more prickly feeling. (a good analogy of this is the feeling of shaved legs a few days after shaving, where it feels prickly VS. After a week or 2 of growth, where the hairs can bend more and feel more "fluffy" because they flex to the touch) Mine were a fine length when I got it but it just took about a month for the strings to "curl" around the edge of my cervix. Initially they were rather straight and felt a bit pokey for my partner. Getting them cut too short can make them feel pokey, or when your cervical position changes throughout your cycle, may mean they aren't visible at all which makes it hard to tell if the IUD is still there or not. If it feels funky at first for your partner, and the strings arent excessively long, I'd reccomend giving it some before getting them trimmed. They'll bend over time :))

I had my first (copper) IUD inserted almost 1.5 years ago after being on the pill for ~6 years. I had really heavy, painful periods, and certain positions during sex started to cause cramps. My boyfriend said he started being able to feel the strings. I thought my cervix was just lower, so I was feeling more of the strings because I was due to start within a few days. Towards the end of my period, I was removing my cup and ended up pulling out the IUD with it. I went in the next week to have a new one inserted and was told the suction from the cup, paired with the heavy/painful periods may have pushed it out. With this new one, my first period was about 8 days, but it seems to have evened out. I switched to a disc which doesn't use suction and I haven't had nearly as much period pain. As for sex, I now have incredibly painful cramps immediately after that last for a few hours and some positions are still painful.
This is just my short experience with a copper IUD. I am heavily weary of hormonal options and this seems to be the best one. I have yet to find any answers about the severely painful intercourse, I just read that sex shouldn't interfere with it. I don't want to scare anyone away as everyone is different, this was just my experience and I always appreciate reading about others.

I dislodged my copper IUD 2 months ago when i removed my disc after having sex with the disc in 🙃 I think the disc got shoved sideways or something and hooked around my strings. I probably should have waited for my cervix to come back down, where it normally sits, before trying to fish the disc out (because it was waaaay up there). But i wasnt thinking 😭 Didn't have any problems with disc removal before this.
Went to get it checked out a few days after i dislodged it because i was spotting and cramping pretty bad. The midwife had me get an ultrasound and said the IUD itself is still in my uterus, its just lower. And my strings are quite a bit longer now too :') She also said, verbatim, "It's probably still an effective method of birth control" 😭 the "probably" is wild. But i havent gotten pregnant yet so 🤷🏽‍♀️
Im also cramping more often, randomly throughout my cycle (not just before/during my period, like I used to before dislodging it). So im gonna give it another month before i get it checked out again and possibly removed. Sucks because Ive only had it in for 8 months and these bad boys are supposed to last 10 years 😩😩😩
Just wanted to share so that you can maybe avoid the same happening to you xo

My husband told my ob that he could feel it and she straight up told him he was lying and if he could feel anything that it wasn’t the iud. We found out later that I have a retroverted uterus so we thought maybe that’s why and maybe that’s why she had said that to him. We just figured maybe usually you couldn’t/shouldn’t feel it because with a “normal” uterus you couldn’t feel it. It’s good to know now tho that it is possible and she was just being unprofessional and rude and that she should and could have done something about it

My ob told me that many doctors cut the string too short and that's what makes it more "pokey". Makes sense to me (logically and considering all the stories about how cutting them shorter didn't help the problem at all).
The angle at which the string is cut also makes a difference apparently (which also makes sense).
I can feel how the string is slightly bend around my cervix and the end of the string doesn't feel sharp at all. I am really glad I have a very capable ob. Now, if she wouldn't have ignored my pain during the insertion she would be perfect.

    I had three IUDs.
Never had a problem with strings if they are inserted correctly and gone for a string check a few weeks later by my gynecologist.
The only problem i ever had was my very first one where i had a copper IUD and it was too large yo go through the cervix. We ended up getting an IUD that inserts through a tube which helped. Its more difficult for those who haven't had children yet, but as someone allergic to the patches and been on birth control pills for too long that it was advised to switch to another -- this was a great option for me. Where I live its fully paid for by the government (It used to be ~$200).

Yes it is best to leave them a few cm long so they come out of the cervical os (opening) and tuck them in/around the cervical fornices. What helped me was asking my gynecologist about the process, she would ask me if she should talk about what she's doing or just get it done to hide it from me if I was scared of tools. It doesn't take longer than ten minutes from literally walking in to leaving, including changing!
Yes, they use the strings to take it out, but it's easier to remove than to insert. My family doctor, health nurse and gyno can all remove it, but ONLY certain certified medical professionals can insert! (In my case only my gyno has the credentials!) So if you were able to get it in, it absolutely will be a breeze coming out! Same process as before, advil before the appointment, and relax as much as you can. Slight pinch, then it's all done.

My strings were literally hanging out of me one day. I went to get it checked out and they got an Ultrasound and told me it was in the right spot. I said there was no way, went for a second opinion, and the Dr was shocked, said it was basically just hanging out there not attached out anything. I just got it removed, came out easier than a tampon. "Right spot" my aunt petunia!!

My partners IUD strings went up my urethra (very bizarre feeling) several times, it would hurt for a split second but was never a big deal, it happened rarely. It would poke me sometimes too. I would ensure to her that everything was ok. I had no problem with it, I didn’t think it was a big deal, shit happens. Regardless I have no complaints the IUD worked as promised.

Mr Dr cut mine MUCH longer than that and it was so much better. They curled up so now my partner doesn’t have anything poking him. When they’re that short, they can be really uncomfortable because they’re much less flexible so they stab you more.

Hmm... so mine were trimmed very short when it was placed. This made them sharp and the strings scatched my partner at time. Trimming them again made it worse. Granted mine was a slightly unusual case as it had to be placed under general anesthetic using a hysterscope.

2 IUDs and in both cases the strings end up in side me. The Drs keep freaking out and want me to have scans to find it. F that, I know it's still there because I don't get period's. It's hell trying to remove it though, only highly trained and experienced staff can do it because I need to be dilated and then they need to go "fishing"

So the issue is I had the IUD that has copper wires (mirena I think?) so it was much more pokey/stiff than a thin plastic wire. My husband could definitely feel the wire and said that it kind of hurt when he hit it a certain way so I went back to the doctor and had it trimmed but unfortunately that made it worse because it was cut in a way that made it feel more sharp and stabby. It may also have something to do with how low my cervix naturally sits and him being well endowed. I’ve had friends who said their partner was on the smaller side and couldn’t feel it since he never reached the cervix.)

I know for sure that’s a NO cuz after 4 years and my kyleena hanging on for dear life, she decided to creep up, way up and nestle herself forever in my angry uterus and had to be surgically removed 🤦🏼‍♀️🙄 after my last pregnancy I almost croaked from blood loss so my OB said I was done, so had a partial hysterectomy and now I just PMDD without bleeding until I’m forever anemic.
Such a blast being a female. Thabks for all you do! I tried OB but ended up in ICU.

I absolutely love my Liletta IUD! I had been on various BC pills for the previous ~12 years, and did a stint with the implant as well. The insertion wasn’t too bad, felt like a bad cramp for like 30 seconds and then was done, I even went to work (vet office) afterward without issue. I have had ZERO negative side effects, have lost weight, and haven’t had a period since I got it put in almost two years ago. I also haven’t had a single partner mention feeling it to me. I think it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made for myself.

My husband felt it completely. It used to drive him nuts. Also anyone who sees this-DO NOT use hormonal bc if you don't want your cycle/ovulation screwed up/delayed removed after you stop birth control/remove an IUD. Some ppl are more sensitive than others and you won't know until after you remove it if you're one of those ppl, and/or if your cycle will come back in a reasonable time, or ever. So please be cautionary. Per the advice of Dr.'s in my family they told us all to completely avoid all hormonal birth control. They told us the copper IUD is safest to maintain your natural hormonal balance.

I got an IUD a little over 2 months ago, and it’s been one of the most horrifying experiences of my life. Doc had quite a bit of trouble getting it in and had to dilate my cervix six separate times. It finally went it and we did an ultrasound to make sure it was placed properly. They said all things were good. Here I am 3 months later still soaking pads everyday, and being in extreme pain that keeps me from doing normal day to day tasks like working, walking, standing, etc. I’ve called them multiple times and they keep telling me it’s normal. I’m sad at the amount of “education” I received before getting it inserted at my doc’s office. Would never recommend this form of birth control for any of my young friends, but I also acknowledge everyone’s body and experiences are different. 😢 The pain is really wearing on my mental and physical health but at the same time I am anxious to get it removed because of more pain during that procedure. Just sharing my personal experience. ❤

For anyone afraid to get them removed: I was shit scared and tense and mine shot out painlessly. My partner could feel the strings sometimes but I liked knowing it was still in place (I did get them trimmed at one point). My best friend has endo and used to get horrific periods, she loves hers and it's made her menstruation way more manageable. IUDs are also way cheaper and more effective than most contraceptive options. Pain management is no joke though, either get it inserted under anaesthesia (e.g. while getting your wisdom teeth out) or be very insistent about needing local at least. Apparently local is optional in America??? Choose the best option for you!

I'm on my second IUD. My partner and I didn't have any issues with my first IUD, but have had a couple instances with the second where he said it poked him. The first one had the strings cut longer, and I could feel that they curves around the edges of my cervix when I checked for the strings. The strings on the second IUD were cut really short. When I went for a later checkup my doctor was concerned because he saw a white spot on my cervix, but it ended up being from the tip of the string of the IUD scratching it (it didn't hurt, and was not problematic, but did cause temporary anxiety when we initially didn't know what it was). Every once in a blue moon my boyfriend says he felt it poke him, but has never complained that it hurt him. When I brought this issue up I was told the strings were already cut as short as they could be. Overall, even with the strings of the being wonky on the second one, I love it. It makes my life so much better. I have ADHD, so not having to worry about my birth control on a schedule makes my life way easier, and best of all I don't get my period. My periods used to be really painful and make me exhausted to the point that it would interfere with school or work. So yeah, like with any birth control there are some drawbacks, but the benefits strongly outweigh them.

They shouldn't be cut short! That makes them poke out rather than curl back. They also get very, very soft after about a month or so due to the cervical mucus.
Also, cutting too short can lead to difficult removals because strings are in the os. Don't let them be cut short!!
