This video is a detailed description of Blue Point Juniper. Blue Point is an upright narrow growing Juniper that grows similar to a Christmas tree. It is a moderate grower to 12 feet in height and 4-5 feet in width at the base. This low maintenance plant has blueish/green foliage year around. Blue Point is drought, disease, deer, and insect resistant.

Thank you very much for very detailed information about Blue Juniper. I found answer for my mistakes. Will water less my tree and it was good to know that tree likes acidic soil.
Jim, get a small desk or something to set your plants on so you can relax with your videos.
I do have a question so i have clay is it ok to mix potting soil with the clay when I plant it
@@toolemanful Potting soil has perlite but if your mixing it 50/50 with native soil it should be fine. Potting soil is usually for pots, perlite is added for faster drainage, drys out faster but mixing it with native soil should be ok. That is my opinion let's hear others.
Soil conditioner should be fine. Black cow, pine bark conditioner if you can find it, organic compost, cotton bur

a trick: you can watch movies on kaldroStream. Been using them for watching a lot of movies recently.
@Marshall Bradley Yup, I have been using kaldrostream for months myself :D
How is it holding up now ? I just bought one and was wondering if I made the right choice or should have gone with aberovite green instead?
I have a couple of these. It produces loads of blue berries that draws in lots of birds and mockingbirds love to nest in the branches.

Hi Jim, I bought two junipers to keep in containers. They did wonderful inside with temp 68 - 72 then I placed them outside with temp 80 - 88, now high 100's, and in a bigger container. They have browned significantly. Not sure if it is the change in weather, the soil, or spider mites (don't see any webs, but seen them in my back yard). I placed two rocks at the bottom of container, soil mixture containing potting mix, perlite, pea moss and sand (from another channel).
Thank you so much for this video!! I have been doing so much research on which kind of tree I should get and this 100% made me confirm this is the perfect tree to get!! I now feel confident on planting and taking care of this type of tree! I wish you were local!! Thank you so much again!!
I always find your videos helpful and informative. I appreciate your style of delivery of your helpful information. Thanks very much.👍👍
You’ve definitely helped me make a wise decision in my tree selections. Thank you for an informative/detailed video🌷
Yes I am juniper for dolang I am really glad that I have been try to see my tree 🎄 ❤
Thank you for your videos, Jim! I have found a new love of yard work due to Covid. I consistently come back to your channel for help. I have one of these and I needed to move it... that corner suggestion is so helpful!!
Thank you so much for your videos, they have been really helpful to me in trying to decide the best trees for my privacy wall. :)
Great explanation about this plant. Thank you . I truly appreciate your time and efforts to educate us about plants.❣️👍
Hello jim! I bought a blue point juniper to place in a pot and bonsai. I am new to gardening, and your video was very to the point which i respect. Thank yoi
Best presentation I've seen after looking at countless others. I have two in front of my house that are about 10-12 feet high by 3.5 feet width wise. However, now I know how to properly care for while maintaining max heights thanks to your video. Cheers!

@@dingdong6005I like the blue point better for my zone 7b/8a in mostly full sun, to include afternoon sun. I e only watered mine if we go weeks without water in higher summer temps. These are very hardy for me and hands free. I’ve noticed the arborvitae brown easily and are more finicky in these temps we have in Alabama.
@@dingdong6005in addition, mine has grown about a foot to two feet per year. It’s been a great addition to our corner of the house.
Thank you so much for all the incredible information you provide for the community.
Video on Blue Point Junipers was very helpful. Newly planted Junipers will likely stay alive now. :)

Excellent, concisely presented and very helpful.
Glad to help. Thanks for watching.
Mine is about 20' tall. I spray it with water to knock the dead things off but other than that dont really water it. It gets a mist from my grass sprinklers. It seems to be doing good the past 20 yrs. It gets plenty of sun for about 12 hrs per day. It also has a nice smell. Mine has branches off to the side with large branches. I ran wires to shape the branches lower when I 1st got it about 5'. Ive also seen the hard berries. Im in the Los Angeles area. Thanks for your video!

Just what I was looking for. Thank you
Thanks for the video
I never had luck with them here in TX , tried to do all of these steps and still dying on me.
Answered many of my questions. Great video. Thanks.
Glad to help.
Fantastic video. Thank you, Jim !
Thank you so much for the information. I just read where it bothered others that you were holding the Juniper while making the video. It did not bother me at all. Just in thinking about it, how nice it is to see a strong man be a man instead of wimp. A wimp would definitely put the Juniper on a table!
I love this video! I’m a long time follower by the way 🙂
Thank you! I'm in zone 8 with summer dry heat that can reach in the lower 100's. My Leyland trees didn't make it (wish I saw this video before buying!) You're video helped me realize to plant Junipers instead of arborvitaes for better growth success in my zone. Now I am ready to buy and plant some in my corner lot home!
Actually I live in central Texas and these blue point juniper are not doing well. We have very little water in this area and 100 plus temperatures right now.

Great video with great information. Would blue point Jupiter survive east facing light ? I live in Amarillo Texas with hardy zone 7a. Thank you!
Thank u this help alot we just got one
This video was VERY informative! I'm about to rewatch and take notes. Thank you!
Thank you for all the Information.
Good info and getting ur workout in at the same time👍
Thank you sir. But, I think you should use a table to put your tree 🤔🙂
I am going to try to grow this plant in completely opposite conditions and see if I can get it to adapt, i have two planted underneath a tall oak tree, they are in about 80% shade, we'll see what happens!
I tried that, it did not work! Mind received about 25% sun each day, and by 3 year it turned brown inside and very sick looking.

How did it turn out?

I am considering getting a blue juniper for my balcony. However it gets only morning sunlight and a bit during sunset, so would say 30% sun and not every day during winter months. Also it does rain now and then so would you say it could handle rain? Because in the video is said that doesn't like wet space at all. Also from you experience, does it shed anything at all? just need to consider this as need something that doesn't shed at all due to another flat balcony below mine.
We have junipers everywhere in our yard. Juniper bushes and one juniper tree, I believe

Help please!! - I planted 4 Blue Points last early spring for use as privacy. Dug the holes and spaced properly. I do have clay soil but amended soil and fertilizer my nursery told me to use. They are growing beautiful that is until I noticed some of the tips are turning yellow/brown and one of the trees the whole inside is brown. I believe this is blight? - I have not seen any spider mites or their webs. I even did the white paper test with a magnifier. I'm not sure how to care for them. I know if nothing is done, they will die or are already dying. Can you give me some suggestions, please? They are so beautiful. Thank you -

Jim, that looks like a blue + gold bluepoint juniper. Just a clarification.
💃 in my way to plant me a juniper 😱
What a great summary presentation! Thank you.
Jim, I’m planting 30 of these blue point junipers next week in Grand Junction, Colorado, a 6b zone with basic clay soils in a desert in a drought! My biggest concern is frequency of watering during the initial establishing period this fall/winter/spring before the 100+ degree temps return next May-Sept. Any tips on frequency/volume of watering schedules while they are starting their rooting journey?
Hello neighbor, I live in Fruita, CO and just bought some juniper for a privacy screen. We have horrible clay soil. How are your Junipers doing? Any tips?
Thank you SO much!
very informative video. Thanks a lot :)
Thanks for watching
You didn't say how to plant the Blue Point as a privacy screen hedge row, what would the spacing be for that on center?
Don't see a like button. Thank you for the info. Want to block my neighbor. Can't afford a 6' fence. Like it's said... good fences make good neighbors.
Hi sir what is the difference between blue point juniper vs blue arrow juniper vs blue sky rocket juniper please
I'm seeing privacy planting from 3 feet to 10 feet. That's a big difference. How far should I?
I have 3 of these that have a brownish red color in the middle, but the half way up the limbs are green.. I live in north mississippi... myguess is too much water butidk
How often should I water my new 4 foot Juniper? It is inside my front landscaping.
Thanks so much for all your information, I wish I had seen this about 16 years ago when I planted mine. It has grown very well into a 12 feet tree but the last few years the lower branches started to brown more and more towards the top it almost brown 2/3 of the tree. I planted it in a southeast facing corner of a the house on a small hill with clay soil It's also a spot where the rain comes down through a gutter pipe. I am not sure if it got too much water or not enough because it's usually a more dry spot facing south east. I am wondering if I could rescue it digging around the roots an fill with composure and pine mulch for the clay issue and also star cutting out a few seemingly dead branches in between fit more air.... thanks for any ideas on that matter!

Can I grow the blue point Juniper from a branch or seeds ?
Thanks for the informative video, Jim. I have 31 in a row I hope to have as a hedge row. They are definitely deer resistant but in the winter the rabbits are destroying them. Had vinyl snow fence around the whole thing last winter and they chewed through my fence about a dozen places. They chewed 3 up about 2 feet right down to the trunk. Had to replace this spring. We were gone for the winter and a friend kept patching the holes with poultry wire and sprayed Liquid Fence but did no good. Next winter it will be 3 or 4 foot poultry wire around the whole thing.

Can U pls. explain in more detail the height at which to plant them? Do U plant the soil level of the plant above the soil level in which you’re planting them? I really think these are pretty & I’ve never seen one except online. I think I’m going to stagger three of them to cover the neighbor’s fence by my patio. Thank U for ur help, I really appreciate your video.
You said you can mix the soil with pinebark. Can you also mix with any type of mulch with your soil when planning? And is it safe to plant in December?
We were thinking of planting them next to an aerobic septic system, would that be safe?
Do you recommend pruning at the base near the trunk any?
Jim, do you have any vids like this about wax leaf privet. We're thinking to alternate that and juniper
Can I plant the juniper in a raised garden bed? Did the roots go out sideways or down?
Hi Jim, could you recommend some brands of pine bark mulch that you would mix in with clay soil please? I have no idea where to start. Thank you for the info.
Informative & to the point.
What do you suggest for a mountain side clay backyard that gets 1/4th day sun that can withstand -20*F (zone 5)? Thnx
I was thinking either Juniper (might not be best based on you vid info) or Arborvitae, heard Arborvitae is poisonous (I have deer and dont want to hurt them) 😞
I planted 3 blue point juniper on the edges of my foundation. can grow plants around the base of the junipers for decoration?

Have some sky rocket juniper. The foliage is browning alot. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
Thank you so much for the vid... you really gave a ton of information here.
I only wish you had set the pot down on something ...it drove me crazy watching you hold it... and that might seem picky ...I apologize .
Also I wish either at the very beginning or end you showed a full-grown Juniper.. or photo thereof... I know you said they look like a Christmas tree but I still would have liked to have seen a picture of one so that I wouldn't confuse it with anything else that looks similarly.
Pls help about a foot from the top was removed frm my juniper blue point today not sure if the wind or someone did it 😬 should I worry or keep caring for them as usual
Which grows faster blue point or emerald green? I'm trying to build a privacy fence as soon as possible?...thanks for videos

Hi. Love your videos. I planted one 2 years back. It looks mostly healthy but I have seen some browning happen on the inside. Any idea what may be the cause for this?
It is normal in the spring for some interior thinning. If it more than normal, then they could have gotten dry.
HortTube with Jim Putnam I hope not. It has rained well here in the last month but it could be the after effects of the winter dryness. Hope it survives. Thanks

How close to the house can you plant them? I plan on placing one on each corner of the front house.
My neighbor above me cleaned their porch with chemicals and it came on my plant. How can i save them.
I know old video but really surprised about the watering.. I just bought three of them from Southern Living and the tag says keep moist first year and then 2-3 times a week which is a lot,for a tree. I bought them because I have clay moist soil and I love moisture loving plants they thrive here. Hmm now I’m concerned

I have one about 3ft still in the pot and turning brown on half its side. Is it salable?
Hi Jim, I bought 2 of these and placed them in a container. I've had them for a few months. I'm noticing the foliage close to the trunk is turning brown. Is this an indication that its dying? I live in Arizona and I try to water them twice a week during summer.
I have the same issue with two of mine in Texas. What is he solution?
Can you keep the blue point junipers in a container long term? I bought two of them after Christmas a year ago and potted them up. Just wondering how long I can keep them in the pots…and if I can keep them trimmed for height.
Thank you Jim! I have had mine for two years in Atlanta, GA and they are not growing that fast. What can I do?

Can I spiral these? I have two of these that I planted last year at the corners of my bed and they are doing great. I'm interested in giving them some sort of shape though. Thanks.
Yes, this is one that can be spiraled. Good luck. I'm terrible at it. The guys that do that for a living are amazing at it.
How close do I space these for privacy planting? Thank you!
I'd space them about 3 feet apart since they don't get very wide.
Hello Jim, need your quick help! I got 2 of the 5 ft tall Juniper Blue point planted today from pot to house yard. It’s Texas and the heat is 101+ during day. The guy who planted told me to put water daily for 10-15 min with tree bubbler. Your advice in the video is different.
Please guide me what would be best to do in my specific situation?
Jim is it possible to clone these trees? I have 26 and don’t want to buy 26 more 😂😅 any suggestions
It would be nice to recommend some products

Is there any blue junipers that can tolerate part sun situation? Something 4-5 ft wide and 10-15 feet tall
Blue Arrow Junipers are around 15'x4'. Hope that helps.
How many feet tall juniper tree
Is there a difference between this and a Skyrocket Juniper?
Can Junipers be put into a pot and put on a deck that gets full sun?
Can I grow this in Phoenix Arizona winter gets low 30°F and in summer 120°
Michael, I have one too down in Arizona city, can you give me all you know about growing it?
hi, skyrocket juniper height and gowth rate in zone 9 please..
When these are growing and reach maturity can they be shaped into a box hedge? I need something that will be 10 feet, tall, deer resistant, and only 3 feet wide due to a property line; and also not take forever to grow.
Would you put this In a rock garden?
Why don't you put the container on a desk or table while you are talking to make it easier on you ?
Jing Huo Easy is overrated. Work harder!
I got 5 from Lowes a few months back. Maybe it was too hot or something. I live in the Dallas area. Within 2 months, they were ALL DEAD. I want to get more, but I NEED to know what went wrong and why they all failed immediately. Because it was so hot, maybe I over-watered them, but it was roughly every other day. After a month, I learned that I should have untangled the roots, so I did. A month later, all 5 were dry and brown.
Maybe spider mites?
I'm also in the Dallas area and had a significant issue with spider mites last year, we have 5 that are forming a decorative barrier to an outside living space. True Green was able to get spider mites under control, hopefully, this growing season they'll thrive again. They are due for pruning so that's my challenge now.

Where can I buy young blue point junipers?
Is fall a good time to plant this tree?
I have planted this plant maybe 10 " out from a column by front porch. It has not really thrived but isnt dying. But your directions indicate I may have put it in the wrong location. It does not get full sun but partial sun. And I have it near plants that need water. I've not elevated it. So my question for you is, should I move this tree to another location where it gets full sun. This one is shaded by a big shumard oak part of the day. If I transplant it could you give directions to do this without destroying the root system in a way that compromises its health. Thank you. My juniper is kind of a dull bluish green.

Hi Jim,
Do you suggest Juniper over Arborvitae for a privacy screen in zone 5 with 4 hours of direct sun per day? Need fast growing.
Is the four hours in the middle of the day? If it's not you may not have enough sun for either. I always use Junipers over arborvitae when I can
HortTube with Jim Putnam it’s on the western side of my backyard so it gets its sun after 2pm ish. It also stays a bit wetter in that area of the yard.
Hope I didn't jacked up. Just planted 6 gold point juniper three weeks ago beside the house (at foundation). Got it from pikes nursery and it didn't have instructions with it so I assumed just dig, plant, water and watch it grow. Anyway, I did not untangles the roots. I added woodchip around it all the way up to the trunk. I water almost everyday since planted. I have not add any fertilizer as yet. I did mix the soil with cow manure. I am in trouble here? What would you recommend from here?
I got the smallest plant they had for sale; like 12 bucks. not sure what size it is....
+Don Powell Pull the mulch back some and stop watering so much. They will be fine
Okay... I just came back from outside. I realized the mulch was only for two... I pulled it back and will water twice next week :-). Thanks for fast response. Nothing like a beautiful landscape--- I wish I had the money to just go bananas with my yardscape/landscape but priorities and an acre of land can hit the pocket really good :-)
Keep the mulch and wood chips at least 3 to 4 inches from bark of shrub/tree
For screening purposes how close should they be planted?
Between four and six. The wider the better for the long run.
