I just brought 34 pieces of these from Walmart for $5.40 each one gallon size. Those are replacing my low white picket fences. People will not cut through my property anymore! Yay
I'm about to follow ur lead...tired of people being on my property like it's theirs. Especially when as a cop I'm trying not to be rude to my neighbors.
Question. We bought a house that has these planted on all 4 corners of a brick ranch. They are growing higher than base of windows and are too tall. I'm starting to cut down hard. What shape should I be aiming for? A ball? A square? The center is sparse because it's growing outward and is currently round in shape. I don't know of it's even possible to retrain this bush to be square instead of round. What do you suggest?
My holy is turning brown. After watching your video, I realized I have been watering it too much. It’s sitting in the sun ☀️ in a large container flower pot until we move into our house. I water my plants 🪴 once a week as they tend to really dry out.
Thank you for the info, very good video. I’d like to ask you a question. I have recently planted about 8 Buford Hollie’s and they started to die after the first week. Weather is hot in the high 90’s in south Texas. Any recommendations? Seems like leaves start to turn brown all of a sudden.
Did I get a dwarf buford (from a different seller) or something else that looks like one? Thanks, how many points do the leaves on a dwarf buford holly have? I have a bush described as one and it has many leaves with both 2 points and one point - this one produced no berries after 2 seasons though it may have been pruned during/after spring instead of late winter. I have another one with leaves with only 1 point - this one had berries during its 1st season & no pruning. Both are growing well.
Very informative...thanks! Can you comment on the growth rate and planting distance? I want a hedge. My local nursery sells Dwarf Burfords in 2 1/2 gallon containers. I'd guess that they are 1 1/2 feet tall. They will get afternoon sun (zone 6-7 Maryland). I know you can't tell me exactly how my specific plants will grow, but in general, how long would it take for the plants to reach 3-4 feet tall? How far apart should I plant them?
Jim , I have 4 of these planted against my house from 14 yrs ago ..yes I spend most my summer pruning. :P I have a question though I've noticed on the front facing leaves there are tons of little black spots .Do you know what this could be ? ..Could it be the same blackspot that I get on my rosebushes that are nearby ? Thanks :)
It is a black spot disease, but it is a different one from your rose issue. Make sure you are cleaning up throughly when you prune. It will clear up and then bounce back up on the plant from pieces on the ground. Keep your pruners clean as well.
Hello, thank you for the video. I planted two of these Buford hollies. I like them. I have a problem though. One one of them, the leaves have fallen off. Alot of the leaves turned brown. I don't know what caused it...possibly over watering.....will the leaves grow back?
I had the same problem. It was a colony of ants that made a nest in the root system. I got rid of the ants and the plant took a little bit to recover. It is healthy now.
Could anyone tell me how wide these might get in a dappled shade if left to grow into it's natural form? I'm fine with 10 foot height I just don't want to be trimming on my neighbors side once they grow in full.
Very informative video!! Could you possibly give me more options in terms of screening plant. I am in austin texas and zone 8b and looking to put plants outside my window in the ground.
I have a playlist on my channel for zone 8 plants and one for screening plants. You might want to look through those. Ligustrum recurvifolium is always a good choice.
Hi Jim, I planted three of these in early Spring this year and the bases of each plant have gotten really bare, almost as if eaten. We are in Raleigh but not an area with deer, could be rabbits? Could any other issue be causing this?
I live in south central texas. We have very mild winters and ultra hot summers. I have 4 planted in the front bed of my house. I have watered them well for the last year since putting them in. They appear to be growing VERY slowly even with watering and fertilizer. If I just fertilize and leave be will that keep them on the smaller size given the heat here!
I know this post is old but anyway. Our dwarf burford holly took off only in third season. It survives heat and survived 2021 freeze. We are in zone 8b.
Excellent video, thanks. Going to try to grow one of these in Bristol, England (zone 9). Might be too wet... but I want a dwarf holly with red berries for the birds: most native UK hollies are just too big / tall for my back garden. *EDIT* Maybe not, on second thoughts! Looks like it is cheap and widely available in US, but not in UK. Shame... Have contacted a company called 'Welsh Holly' to discuss what might suit my garden better...
Hi Jim, I had a iron fence around my property in north texas, I want to plant something that gives privacy. Can suggest some hedging /screen plants that grow 6ft and stay narrow. Right now I'm considering dwarf burford holly.
I have dwarf Burford Holly in front of my house. They were there when we purchased the house. They are about four or more feet tall. Would it be possible to trim them down a foot or so in the summer?
Would like to see a demonstration of how to prune a mature Dwarf Burford. I have one in my yard that was getting too tall and so I pruned it back hard last year and now worry I messed up its shape. It was probably 10 - 12 feet tall; I pruned it back to 8 ft or so. Also, how do you tell if you have a Dwarf Burford or just a regular Burford? I'm not sure because it was here when I moved into the house.

I planted 3 around my covered porch. What I love about these are they are evergreen and less maintenance.
Plenty of great info. Seems like I accidentally purchased a great shrub that will meet my needs.
I might have to plant an assortment of hollies after watching all of your Holly videos.
Great info Jim!! I'm starting with one here in Hill Country/Mico, TX. The low maintenance feature is the reason I purchased this lovely plant!
How far apart should I put them. To have a nice continue wall?

What kind is soil mix is best I’ve already dropped the hol a here in northern Texas. What do i backfill with these?
Hi @jim! How far apart should I plant if I want a continuous hedge in front of house? Live in Austin Texas. Thanks!
How far apart should dwarf Burford hollies be planted?
Thank you!

+B Harris You could do that in a couple of seasons. Probably 5 foot spacing. Maybe closer if your impatient. They can be fertilized twice a season.
Need to screen near a swimming pool. Do they drop a lot of leaves that could end up in the pool?
Great informative video! I can't wait to start growing mine!
I wonder how these would do kept in a container garden
thank u i just bought one but going to buy more as a screen to block the farm rd

Thanks so very much for taking your time ! I will clean up better this time .

I love this channel!
How many should i purchase to cover 4 by 20 sqr ft?
Virginia, 20ft spacing along driveway! Should I plant 5 of these or mix screen with which plants?
Can I prune these to a Christmas tree shape or am I better off with a different holly? I really don't want a tree more than 4-6 feet tall.
If I wanted to make a hedge out of dwarf Buford holly, how far should I space them out?
Thanks. Chris.
At least 1 foot apart, they will grow into each other
Jim said at least 5' apart

I bought a small Holly Bush last year from asda it was full of berries and leaves but they have all withered and the branches are empty and brown
If I plant one that has berries will I need any sort of pollinator in the future or do they pollinate themselves?
btw - great video, thanks for posting. I mainly want the holly for winter birds.
Rabbits seem to love our newly planted shrubs. Any suggestions? Used cayenne and Irish Spring soap but no lucj so far
Indication of spread would b helpful
How are they started. Cuttings. Planting the berries. I need about 100 plants but not all at once.
You can propagate them off cuttings. There are videos on UA-cam. As I only bought a few and plan to grow more off these too. Good luck!
Thanks! Very helpful! Love your channel!
Glad to help. Thank you
Hi Jim, I planted three of these in early Spring this year and the bases of each plant have gotten really bare, almost as if eaten. We are in Raleigh but not an area with deer, could be rabbits? Could any other issue be causing this?
Are the roots growing out, Not wrapped? Draining, not too wet?
Is this Holly a messy plant does it lose it's leaves and berries where you have to constantly clean up?
No cleanup at all really

I think they will pick up speed in this second year. The heat won't bother them at all.

Good technical information

Dwarf Burford grows kind of roundish. I would look at needlepoint. Similar, but more upright.
@@JimPutnam Thanks, Can I Keep Needle Point to 6ft height and 3ft width forever ?
Would this grow well in a container?
Extremely helpful! Thanks a ton!
Thanks for watching and commenting

When do you plant Dwarf Buford Hollies? I live in West Tennessee above Memphis. Ty
Summer or spring
I have dwarf Burford Holly in front of my house. They were there when we purchased the house. They are about four or more feet tall. Would it be possible to trim them down a foot or so in the summer?
A foot would be no problem. The sooner the better. Not after the first of Aug.
HortTube with Jim Putnam Thank you again for your help. You re the best!
Is this the plant that has really hard and pointy leaves that hurt if you step on them?
No, these have smooth edges. Prickly plants are a hard no for me.
Where can you buy seeds for this type of plant?
Thank you, thank you, thank you!🙏
I have 4 burford hollies and they never flower or fruit
Any suggestions
They are in a south west location at the front of my house I'm in zone 8b

IMHO (Im not horttube 😊) : Buford is a faster grower (to 15+ feet). Dwarf Buford will slow down at 1/2 that size.
He just said Dwarf Burford Hollies grow 6-8 ft..soooooo
When you say 'screening plant', is the the same as a foundation hedge?
A screening plant is for dividing spaces. These are to big for a foundation. Carissa Holly would be a good choice.
Will this plant do well by itself in a front flower bed?
Yes, for sure. It can get pretty big though. Carissa Holly is a better choice if you want something smaller
Hi, Would I care for the Royal family holy in the same way?
Yes, very much so. Almost the same size and everything.
How wide do these get?
How far apart for screening plant
4 feet is probably perfect.
Indication of spread would b helpful
