  • In my last video I said I would add a second layer of paper mache clay to my giraffe to make the sculpture smoother. But then I remembered an easier way to do it - and you don't need to do any sanding at all.

    As someone who works with Joint Compound ALL the time, I absolutely love this technique. While JC is imminently sandable, not having to generate all that dust is a HUGE improvement! Thank you so much @Ultimate Paper Mache : damp rag, here I come! 😍

      Heather I have a question what do you do to prevent cracking when the joint compound dries? Or could you share your recipe? I new with this medium and I want to create art wall with it. I hope you can help me and I thank you for your time

    • @Thicketworks
      @Thicketworks 5 років тому +4

      @@LaReynaLagarto Hey there! Frankly, this has never been an issue...my pieces have never developed cracks - but, then again, I don't use layers that are more than 1/8" thick. If you are going to be building up substantial layers for your wall art, you may want to experiment with building them up incrementally - apply one layer, allow to dry, add the next, and so forth. Cracking usually occurs when the differential between the moisture content of the substance is very high, and the environmental conditions are quite dry and warm... allowing to dry slowly can help! xoxo

      They do say that you shouldn't sand it without wearing a mask. That's great advice, because you don't want the fine dust in your lungs. I almost never sand it, anyway, because it's easier to smooth it with a damp sponge, and you don't end up with dust all over the house.

    Thank you. Your timing for this video is AWESOME! Did a search yesterday through all your videos to find a way to smooth out the texture. I make my clay a bit differently. First I've never added the flour. Secondly I start the clay with completely dried toilet paper chunks. The rest of the recipe is yours with these changes. After soaking the toilet paper I use an old T-shirt to squeeze out as much water as possible. Use a blender to chop the toilet paper into small chunks. Then let them dry completely. When mixing I can control the amount of water. Allowing me to make a stiffer, more moldable clay. The clay has to sit overnight in a sealable plastic bag. Instead of relying on a perfect armature I make a simple one as close to the shape I need. Relying on the stiffness of the clay and my hands to form the final shape. This makes a textured clay. The texture has worked in my favor. Adding an extra depth to my work. My next project needs to be as smooth as possible. Thank you for your great timing!

      I must be psychic! Do you show your process anywhere? I didn't see it on your channel. I'm currently trying to learn Ukulele and not having much luck with my old fingers - do you have any suggestions for me? Not quite the same as the instrument you play, but close... :)

      @@UltimatePaperMache No I don't have any pics of my stuff or process. But as far as the Ukulele goes try this. Learn to press the strings as lightly as you need to. Most beginners try to play to hard. Start by pressing down a string. Wile you pick at that string slowly lift your finger till it no longer sounds good. Then lightly press till it does. Try the next finger and see if you can remember how lightly you pressed with the first one.

    Wow! I love your work!
    Do you think spray paint primer could work in place of the gesso?
