When you heat / boil flour, it activates the gluten and then it becomes thick and sticky (wheatpaste). I've been doing this for decades and nobody seems to pass on this info about boiling paper mache glue anymore.
In a bowl, whisk together 1 cup of water with 1/4 cup of flour. In a pot, boil 1 cup of water. Once it comes to a boil, pour in your flour water mixture and whisk until it starts boiling again. You'll see the solid white turn kind of translucent. I add in a teaspoon of vinegar so it stops mold from forming.
PVA glue also works as a preservative, but isn't 100% necessary if you've activated your flour's gluten.

    Deidre,
It is so nice to see a DYI from you. I have not been getting any alerts about any new videos. Either your very busy or something has changed with my tech world. I have been working 9 hours days and I worked Saturday for 9 hours pulling parts (automobile) that GM says is obsolete and it goes all into the dumpster. Such waste when the assembly line people are on strike now wanting to make 34% more money. Anyway, I kept all the brass engine oil seals rings and silver cool shaped. Round washers as I like to make mobiles and jewerly out of them. I hope you have been well.
I am excited to see this video. I think this brown paper is so nice for Fall with light weight yarn made pumpkins to rest in the bowl or take some of the faux fall leaves and display them in this bowl. And hey, how about making mini mushrooms to display out of Amazon brown envelopes. Maybe cut down a yogurt cup to be the top of the mushroom and get chunky round twigs for its base. I think that would be so cool. I am taking a test and catching up on videos and then I need to make a pair of earrings for the accountant at work. Your video said it was posted an hour ago and you already had 123 likes. So super! I hope you had a great summer and I hope you have a great Fall!
    Fondly,
    Rebekah in VA

This is probably a great recipe, but as someone who has done this for years, I recommend adding white vinegar or lemon juice to the mix. This will keep mold from forming from the flour long term. I live in a humid climate so this is mandatory for me. But if the project is exposed to any moisture, mold is always a possibility. Cheers ❤

    QUESTION:
If I were to stack some cardboard boxes (say 3, 4, maybe 5 dependind on size) and adhered theme together somehow then paper mache them inside and out about 3-5 times, would they be strong enough to make a bookshelf and hold the weight of a book collection? I had this idea but wanted to ask an expert first.
