A former Kazakh minister, Kuandyk Bishimbayev, has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for the fatal assault on his wife in a restaurant. The court found him guilty of torture and murder. During his trial, which was broadcast live for seven weeks, evidence showed him repeatedly assaulting his wife, Saltanat Nukenova, leading to her death. The case has ignited public outcry, prompting Parliament to pass a law criminalising domestic violence, especially considering government data indicating that one in six women in Kazakhstan has faced violence from a male partner. Bishimbayev had previously served a 10-year sentence for corruption but was released after a year.

In other modernized countries, abusers are even just sentenced to less than that and can even get parole in between.
