- In this video I will show you some of my process where I paint a pastural landscape inspired by the Northland area of New Zealand. I painted the art work featured in this video outdoors. Painting outdoors is known as painting ‘en plein air’. It’s a great way to improve your painting skills as it really makes you look at the landscape.
Suitable for oils and acrylics.

I like your teaching technique...you explain everything you are doing....most youtube instructors just paint and go into a quiet, contemplative mood and don't say very much! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
My pleasure. I do my best to try and explain my process because it actually helps with my own learning as well, so everyone benefits. Thank you for subscribing 😊
Thank you, from Louisiana, USA!
You are so welcome 😊
Hi Sam,Greetings from Ireland.I just came across your tutorial & I'm addicted. You have a lovely relaxed way of teaching, & explain all the colours.Im 72yr young & love painting, its only for my enjoyment...my son lives in Napier I love to paint those beautiful landscapes you have...
Thank you so much 😊
Dude, Opeth does rule. Excellent shirt choose
Thanks, yeah Opeth are one of my favourite bands 😊
Stunning...nowadays you are painting on white canvas..its looking more brighter than before. Thanks for the clear explanation of colour mixing stay safe and God God bless you.
Thanks. Yes, the linen panels I have been using are so nice to paint on that I couldn't wait to try them out. I then noticed that when I was painting on a white surface my colours looked cleaner and I wasn't having to make value readjustments. Thats not to say you shouldn't paint on a toned surface, both have their advantages, but lately I have been enjoying painting on a white surface 😊
@@SamuelEarpArtist thank you so much for replying sam..waiting for your next painting tutorial. 😊
Great to get another video Sam i was looking forward to another so its gr8 to see you back .
Thank you so much 😊
👍👍👍👍❤ as always!!!
Thank you 😊
I find myself a bit envious of you Sam, it looks like such a beautiful place. As for the envious part; it’s because I am confined most of the time to a wheelchair as I became paralyzed from a stroke. I used to spend so much of my time outdoors previously and also I am forced to use my still functioning non-dominant hand to try to paint as I did before. I was left handed;but sadly that’s now my paralyzed side. All of that aside;you are a great inspiration and are highly appreciated!Thank you!
I'm so sorry to hear that, but it's good you are still painting. Have a look at Dr Robert Morse's channel here on UA-cam, I don't know but maybe it might help. Here is the link:

Really please you are enjoying my videos, your support is appreciated. Cheers 😊

Cheers thanks, yeah Opeth are one of my favourite bands. I've seen them live a few times as well 😊
Good tip about setting the darks to gauge value as the painting progresses
Yeah it's an easy way to create a tonal dynamic in the painting. I learned this from some other plein air painters 😊
Nice one Sam
Thank you 😊
Best so far brother. Thanks for all the excellent tips as well.
Thank you so much 😊
gorgeous❤️🥰
Thank you!! 😊
Im gonna try this one man, wish me luck! Ha
Awesome Patrick 😊
great video and painting class! Thanks for sharing this class!!!!
My pleasure! 😊
Great video. And another nice painting. Thanks for the content Sam. Cheers
My pleasure, thank you 😊
That pthalo green is some strong stuff. Easy to have it get away from you. I’ve heard Sap green is a mix of two pigments pthalo green and yellow ochre. If so maybe it would be handy to have a premix ready.
Yes you will only need a very small amount of phthalo green so it will last you as well. I have not used sap green. 😊
💞💞💯🎨🎨
Thank you 🙏🏻💖✨
You are so welcome 😊
Thanks greatly appreciated Samuel for your plein air painting, enjoyable video as always although I'm not using oil paints yet.I would like your opinion on watercolour or oil paints, is it possible to use your methods in watercolour paints? .Thanks greatly appreciated glad you're keeping well and making videos stay safe and healthy
For oil painting I often encourage my students to paint from dark to light, this helps keep the dark paints from being diluted by light paint and enables layering of light paint over the dark paint. This is also helpful because highlights often are over shadows. In watercolor, the white of the paper serves as the lights, so you have to work from light to dark, the opposite of oil painting. You can’t layer white over dark with watercolor because the paper is the white. Was that helpful? :)
@@GalleryBry thanks Samuel and understand the importance of your reply greatly appreciated
@@philipdown3147 You’re quite welcome. :) Hope you are having a great day! -Bry
Hey Philip, sorry for my late reply. Yes I agree with Gallery Bry's comments on painting dark to light with oils and you'll see this in my videos as I always start by painting my dark values first. Watercolours handle very differently to oil paints so again as Gallery Bry says you work from light to dar. You could try using goauche paints as these have a much thicker consistency than watercolours and you can create effects that look similar to oil painting.
If you would like to try oil painting I can personally recommend Blue Ridge Oil Colors, this is the brand I am using:
blueridgeoilpaint.com/
I hope this helps. Cheers. Sam
Great! 👍So were are you, what happened in the meantime...
Thanks. I'm constantly flat out busy, but I always try and make UA-cam videos whenever I can 😊
Where about in Northland are you painting? We met on Tapeka beach 2 summers ago, I have now shifted and are now on a block at Okaihau. I have not been able to do any painting for a while but would like to take it up again soon. I do appreciate your video's. Genevieve
Hey Genevieve, sorry for my late reply. Yes I remember meeting you at Tapeka beach. I painted this art work in the Oromahoe area, lots of great subjects to paint there. 😊
Hey Sam I know you use rosemary brushes but what line is it? the Ivory or the Evergreen ? What do you like ?
Hey Allen, I am using the 'Classic' range. These are bristle brushes 😊
The poplar tree on the left should be 3-4 cm closure to the center.😏
