- "How to Paint the Magnolia Flower, Watercolor Painting," by Ross Barbera, guides viewers in easy to follow, step by step instructions, in classic watercolor painting techniques.
Visit www.rossbarbera... to learn more about my paintings.
In this two part video series I demonstrate how to paint the beautiful Magnolia flower using classic, transparent watercolor painting techniques. My instructions are easy to follow, and very detailed. This video series is packed with useful watercolor information and painting tips, and in it I discuss and demonstrate every aspect of the painting's development. Each part of this painting series is approximately thirty minutes long. Part 1 introduces the initial stages of the painting's development. Topics discussed range from an introduction of the tools and materials of watercolor painting, to techniques used in applying washes of color, color mixing, masking techniques and paper preparation.
Part 2 continues with the overall development of the painting, and you will learn how to control washes of color to achieve beautiful results. By watching me work with "wet into wet," painting techniques, you will learn how to control this fundamental method of watercolor painting, and how to effectively interpret your subject matter. In Part 2 you will also see how I develop the background for this painting, and how I work with my paints to "paraphrase," the subject matter, rather than copy it. My instructions are designed to guide viewers in the process of creating a beautiful watercolor painting, while at the same time to teach the fundamentals of classic, transparent watercolor painting.
An extended version of this video, with additional content and painting instructions can be purchased at amazon.com. You can learn more about my paintings by visiting www.rossbarbera...
I am learning more from this watercolor tutorial than the last 30 I watched combined. This should be watched by anyone wanting to paint with watercolor or already painting in watercolor.
From my childhood, painting was my hobby and tried different materials and went to different painting classes! In all these years I've never seen a teacher describing the whole process with such details and completely...
Thank you...
Ross, just discovered your informative (magnolia) video by accident late last night. I almost felt as if I was standing right next to you while you were explaining the process in painstaking detail. You kind sir get an A+ for being patient and filling in the blanks for all of us novices out there who have had our share of disasters with water colors. Thanks for the encouragement, I'm giving this another go!
I love your subject-matter and the way you show the importance of each and every detail in the flower. I look forward to following your teaching. Also, the comment you made about..."not too much" shows us all when to finish an area without 'mudding' up the color.
and now to "practice, etc." :)
You are one of my favorite watercolorists. Your work is incredibly beautiful and being able to be tutored by you is a special treat. Your lessons are extremely well thought out and so encouraging. Thank you. Thank you!
I've never watched a watercolor video. Have never had classes. I've been practicing a little. Your video is EXCELLENT! Love all the little details you shared. Also loved how you show us the picture your looking at so we can compare it. You make it look so easy! Thanks.
really good basic instruction and technique, teaches the importance of good paper and patience! Thank you Ross
Hi Ross...I had to add my "bravo" to this lesson like the others. I have never come across a lesson in watercolors such as yours. Brushes and their sizes/shown Paint samples and their names for the painting/shown reinforcement of points as you demo them/shown. I have taken a watercolor class before, but in those 4 weeks, I wasn't presented with as much complete information as what you have shown me in this one video. I thank you sooo much for taking the time to share your talent and knowledge in such a complete format as you have chosen to do. Fantastic!! You've got another fan in me!
Thanks for your wonderful feedback!!! I’ve been teaching watercolor painting since the 1980s, and it has always be objective to provide my students with as much information, clarity and instruction as possible. That makes the difference in guiding students to success. I’m glad it’s coming across in my videos! Thanks for watching!
Thanks a million. I started watercolors a few months ago, watched so many tutorials. Yours are the best. I love the way you explain what you are doing and why and make all your processes so transparent. You are an excellent teacher!
Thanks Ross Barbera, I tried to repeat the work with your teaching, you are a great teacher, very educational and I have learned a lot about colors. I'm very grateful
WOW and son of WOW! The painting is incredible but the instruction you give is clear and very helpful. Thank you so much for your time on this video.
What an excellent video. No rushing and plenty of clear explanation. Thank you.
I want to thank you so much for sharing your art and talent. You provide the best instructions I have ever encountered on any type of painting media. I usually work with acrylic paints, but you have inspired me to try my hand at water colour. With your methodical instructions and the exact colours you use, as well as seeing how you apply the paint, I believe I can actually do something with it. I can't wait to try it this weekend. Thank you.
Hi GrannyDblTap! Thank you very much for your kind comments - I really appreciate them! I hope you like working with watercolors and thoroughly enjoy the entire process! Thanks for watching - Ross
You have shown me that let is best and layering means just that (build or lift color)
I am looking for all your step by step instructions. Once I learned wet-on-wet there is no other way. Thank you so much. I am in my golden years and just picked up a brush five years ago. As my mentor has said, "I have to eat, I have to sleep but I MUST PAINT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The frost come back to destroy the flowers. You, sir are awesome!
I love all your watercolor videos...I have watched them all and have tried to paint flowers as you do. Of course, I have only been painting in watercolor for about a year and you videos are wonderful! thanks so much.
I am definitely going to paint miniatures! No more wall space for the biggies. Thanks for the inspiration!
Miniatures are lots of fun to paint. I often began my classes by have my students paint a miniature! Thanks for watching!!!
Mister/Master Barbera,Thank you very much for your proffessionel watercolour teaching, competence and craftmansship.
Wow Ross, I am really impress how well you teach. To be an artist is one thing but to be able to teach it is a whole other story. I am new to watercolors and I am experimenting with it. I am going to watch everything you post.
Thanks, Maureen, for your very kind comments! I'm glad you have decided to experiment with watercolor painting, and I hope you really enjoy it and discover some of the many possibilities there are with this medium! Best wishes! -Ross
realisticart Thank you and with your help and inspiring videos I am sure to love this medium. I started backwards, just jumped right in with oils and no experience with drawing and shadows. I love abstract so I think water colors will really be fun to do.
I know this is an older video but I had to comment on your teaching style. I really enjoyed your step by step application of paint. You paint in a slower pace explaining why you are painting what and where so us newbies can understand the process. I just recently started to learn how to watercolor and my learning curve is really up and down. lol I will definitely be subscribing to your channel. A big thank you from Montana!
I have paid good money for much less coherent, cohesive or elucidated watercolour instruction.
🌸Thank you!🌸
Thanks for your positive feedback! I style my video instruction on my college teaching and make an effort to pack in the information. Thanks for watching!
Very nice that you print the colors and directions while you demonstrate,
Hi Judyth, Glad you like that. I strive for clarity in my demonstrations. Thanks for watching!
Lovely flower painting!
Thank you, June - I appreciate your comment!- Ross

Thank you so much. As well as being an accomplished artist you are a brilliant teacher. I really appreciate how you explain each step...I've learnt so much watching this and now can't wait to watch part two. Maureen
Thanks Maureen! Hope you like part 2! I'm starting a new watercolor video this week that should be available by the end of the winter.
I am enjoying your teaching technique. You are a very talented artist and I especially like the fact that you show which brushes to use for what effects. I have found very few people who do that and it is so escential for a good outcome on your work.
Thanks for watching!!!
Thanks for sharing with us. Happy painting!

Thank you Ross. I agree with your assessment of beauty, among other things.
Loved your way of demonstrating your watercolour and especially taping the watercolour paper to a board, I haven't worked with these paints for some time and it was so excelerating I am 78 + I have a degree but we worked in oils only but thank you for this. Christina ross from Casino NSW 2470 Australia

I am inspired! your patience and detail is marvellous, and I have learned a lot. I think your paint palette looks fabulous..like a painting itself! Just press some damp paper over it and you have a winner!
Yes!!! Paint palettes can look great! Way back in the 1980's I would take closeup photos of classroom palettes and use them in discussions on abstraction. Glad that you like my videos! Thanks for watching!!!
Thank you, I just started painting in watercolors and I loved your video as it has given me many pointers.
I am so happy to find and sub to you. I am blown away at how much I have learned in just this first part! I love that while watching along you give the colors and techniques used and why. Thank you so much, I can't wait for part 2 and more of your videos. I really appreciate it, thank you.

You are very talented, thank you for sharing
Hi Dee - I have been thinking about that for some time, since many people do ask me about the drawings. I will probably begin offering them in the near future. My blog subscribers will get an email notification when they are available. Thanks for your question.
Master artist at work... you are great.
You are really a very very good teacher......
This is super helpful! Thank you for posting
thank you so much for sharing, ross!
metalangel12311 I actually use gummed packaging tape and a different method which is too long to describe here. I do have a short video on the DVD version of the Magnolia watercolor painting tutorial, if you are interested in seeing the whole process. Thanks for your feedback - I appreciate it! - Ross
Hi Katrina,
I plan to offer another flower series this winter - I hope you'll have a chance to watch! I get the dispenser bottles at the Contenti website, and the Incredible Nib can be found at any good art supply store - or Dick Blick online. Thanks very much for your kind feedback! I hope you enjoy the painting process! - Ross
Beautiful work !
Thank you! -Ross
I love your tutorials. I have learned so much! Thank you! Do you ever paint animals? They are challenging for me.
Dear Ross! Thank you for the video. I would like to paint a branch of magnolia on a 3 pieces set of canvas. This video will help me a lot. Have a nice day!
Hi - for watercolor painting I do not use gesso, but use the paper as is. If I am using a larger, full size sheet of paper, I will stretch it first to prevent the paper from curling while I paint. For a smaller size, however, like the paper you see me painting on in this video, I do not need to stretch it. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!
I started watercolors some months ago and it's getting better every day. Yet, I'm still strugling with some things.
Send me a comment on my blog site and I will try to help. -Ross
Excellent and informative. Thank you!
That's great! Thanks very much for commenting - I appreciate it!
Hi Mark -If I am using a larger, full size sheet of paper, I will stretch it first to prevent the paper from curling while I paint. For a smaller size, however, like the paper you see me painting on in this video, I do not need to stretch it. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching! -Ross
The more you paint and the more comfortable you are with the materials, the better the paintings become. I hope you really enjoy these projects! Thanks for watching!
The video is very helpful and the painting is beautiful
amazing; I really love your work and thank you for sharing this video
Thanks for watching my video. I’m glad you liked it!
Hi Sylvia, the series number is 101, catalogue number from Dick Blick is 05003-1006. Thanks for your question!
Great - so glad you have found my video useful! Hope you really enjoy watercolor painting! Thanks for watching!
Hi Karen,
Thank you very much for your feedback - I appreciate it! I was hoping that showing the same thing that I see would help the learning process. Thanks for watching! -Ross Barbera
Beautiful! And I have to say I really enjoyed your accent and overall excitement during the video :)
Thanks for watching!!!
Awesome, Ross! Thanks for posting this very informative video---love your work! :)
Thank you very much for your kind comments! I am glad that you have found my videos useful!
I really enjoyed watching your video.
Hi Julissa, Yes, I did a light pencil drawing of the flower based on a photo I took of our magnolia tree. Hope you enjoy the project! Thanks for watching!
+Johnson Edward Hi- I exclusively use and highly recommend Arches 140 lb cold press watercolor paper, as I have always had consistently good results with it. I know you'll see a difference when you try it. Best of luck. -Ross
I get the dispenser bottles at the Contenti website, but I have seen them in other good craft and art supply stores as well. Hope you enjoy the project! - Ross
I'm booking my seat now for the viewing of your next videos:) Very excited by the prospect (or is that a promise?) of a series. You have a fantastic teaching style - please don't change a thing. I was looking at your work on your website - the roses - what colour combinations do you use for the peachy, gold rose? Also, are you planning to do something with water i.e. painting it not using it?
Katrina
thanks again for sharing ross. i've attempted your other flowers as well - but i believe in the saying "how do you get to Carnegie Hall?..."maybe 1 day i'll produce a hibicus, lily.. that i like. but the magnolia i find is difficult to draw. do you provide a line drawing?
Thank you so much for another fantastic video! The labels make it really clear and easy to fellow. I really learn so much from all your video. I have not tried the landscape yet. I hope we could see more landscape drawings. I love all your drawing so so much!
As a beginner I asked about the watercolor paint to start with. I wonder if you could introduce some brushes for beginners please? Thank you!! Look forward to hearing from you and thank you so much!
I look forward to April every year, and hope that the weather does not get too hot - too soon, so they stay in bloom as long as possible! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching my video!!
TheMctrav3 Thanks for your feedback!-Ross
Hi - thanks so much for your comments. The parts that are "speeded" up are the times when I had to let the paint or masking material dry before proceeding to the next step. Sometimes this was overnight, as I could not go any further without several hours drying time. As I mentioned in the video, you can't paint an area adjacent to another until it is totally dry. As far as actual painting goes - letting the colors flow, etc. - it is very close to real time. I hope you enjoy watercolor painting!
Loved it. Thanks.
