This is how Minecraft looked in my mind when I played as a kid.
Nah, for me, it was bright and ugly, but very fun. It started to look better overtime time, but there's no way I ever called the Alpha version anything but ugly, yet a lot of fun.
I never played above 8 chunks and it showed tbh, having played it for all of 2012-2016 and a little bit during covid. I heard about this mod but I didn't know when it would be ready to be usable on fabric
I’m not crying you are
FACTS!!!
damn, back in the beta days, i wouldn't have doubted it could EVER look like this! xD
The one thing that always blows my mind is thinking back to how almost all of us first experienced the game;
single digit render distance with heavy fog
I rember, early Alpha was a vibe man, the art we used to build, recreations of buildings when we got better render distances, then getting survival in A1.5 and now look at it.... It will forever astound me at how far it's come
I will always miss that first year though
It gave it a whole different vibe and atmosphere. There weren´t villagers or most of the mobs we have today. You felt isolated and the heavy fog made it so that you were always wondering what could be lurking beyond it.
Kinda miss that tbh, but modern Minecraft is still great in its own way.
I was the free IOS version when demos were popular for games. Could only build with bricks 🥲
wasn't even done by numbers of chunks back in the day, it was tiny, normal and far
Yup! On a laptop I got for middle school with 4 gb of RAM 😂 And then I played Tekkit on it so my performance would suffer even more lol
Minecaft's modding community is honestly insane. Its to the point that its not really even just adding features & whatnot anymore, they're literally improving the back-end code of the game. I cant think of any modding community that's on that level. Maybe modders of Valve games, i dunno
Edit: It's hard to compare modding communities or any creative fandom in general to one another, because people almost always only deeply know one side of the argument and never both.
Stalker lol. They rebuilt the engine into Anomaly. Basically combines all of the games, rebuilds and redesigns basically all of the systems and adds a bunch of new stuff.
samw ith dayz on PC the base game is ok but the modded vanilla servers are brilliant, new maps, the best gaming map of all time is on dayz ''Namalsk''. origianl game has 2 maps and now the modders gave it 50 plus maps, really thou Namalsk is such a beautiful map
Skyrim perhaps. But thats about it.
its the most successful game ever made. Not really surprising.

hearing lvlcap talk about wanting to play with his is son in minecraft feels like i've reached the end of a circle. years ago i was a kid watching his content, now im an adult watching his content - congrats man, hope your son enjoys the mod and the game!
Was about to comment the same thing. Can't believe I've been here since the BF3 days.
watching this video and reading the comments is just so wholesome. Like there is no negativity on here and I love it
These comments make my depression spike lol

I very rarely audibly say "wow" while seeing a mod for a game or a shader mod or whatever else, but wow this mod is incredible. I was saying wow at almost every shot
When I first discovered that shader mods exist in 2020, I definitely said "wow"
Modders: Here, have free revolutionary game changing mods
Mojang: We added dog armor, take it or leave it lol.
They also overhauled the pvp meta, added an entire new system for bad omen, and created pretty much one of the best updates since 1.18
@@comboing3108 Also dont forget that they've done some optimization too (unfortunately one of THE most disliked things in the community, an update without "more masses of content shoved down facehole" clearly visible)
@@comboing3108 ah yes, the prestigious pvp mode that I'm just hearing of for the first time 😅
Isn't Minecraft mostly played on servers with minigames these days?
minecraft isnt supposed to be a high graphic game. So keeping it as a mod is good
@@fldom4610 Not sure where this idea comes from.
Yes, the game is supposed to be simple and accessible. That being said, visual aesthetics are okay to change because the game is still simple and accessible. As tech continues to improve, so to will graphical engines, allowing things that weren't possible before. Minecraft was made with the limitations it has because of what was available at the time.
This is stunning but Mojang should have been the ones making their rendering engine better... so I'm incredibly thankful to the modding community for things like shaders and distant horizons
The problem is that Minecraft Java is full of spaghetti code and is an unoptimized hell, especially when Mojang was bought by Microsoft. It runs terribly on low spec PCs without a bunch of optimization mods. Its also the reason why Mojang created Bedrock. Its essentially an entirely new game backend-wise, and why it doesnt have features Java has (but very optimised and stable).
@@elongated_musket6353 Distant Horizons (one guy at first) pulled it off without access to that code. Its not an excuse tbh
@@elongated_musket6353 the difference is that modders don't have source code, so they have to reverse engineer the code.
Agreed, Mojang has had something like 10 years to sort this out, but just hasn't, They don't seem to care, people buy it anyway, and they have outsourced the optimization problem to the modders.
@@elongated_musket6353 the difference is that modders don't have source code, so they have to reverse engineer the code.
Should be noted that shader compatibility (Iris) with DH is still in early beta and is prone to crashes and bugs, and it's only available in the mod's discord. The modders recommend waiting until full release
Is there any expected time for full release?

The level of beauty seeing the landscape in the distance is on par with Red Dead Redemption 2. Playing RDR2 I get lost so easily just staring into the distance and know that I can physically go there and interact with the place I’m looking at right now.
So being able to see all those chunks in the distance with the shaders mod, man never thought blocks would be so pretty.
I was thinking the same exact thing! This gives me the same feeling as RDR2 does when looking off into the horizon.
First time I felt this way was playing Just Cause 2.
This mod is encapsulating the jaw dropping look these games had through our kid eyes.
@@Soliye. Oh man, Just Cause 2 was really ahead of its time. Truly amazing with its vast landscapes.
lol okay now chill
Now imagine GTA 6
God damn it. I first played minecraft back in elementary school, in like 2011 when it came out. It looked so bad compared to today. Looking at this gives me kind nostalgia about my own childhood and how minecraft was just starting out. Honestly, I'm really happy for this game, it came so far since 2011. Today I'm looking at this game like that one special toy you had when you were a kid that you will always remember. The memories man... 🥲
I played the web based demo that Notch made before the Java version, it’s certainly improved since then.
@@lamsmiley1944 dude yeah me too, like in 2009 or something. I was 15 at the time and I played deep into the night almost every day. Made me fail a couple tests in school but it was so fkng fun. Kinda weird that this was 15 years ago...
it’s insane because it’s not even mojang themselves that makes it so good. the community makes a better game out of minecraft than the devs themselves.
Oof, I feel old. I was in my 30s back then. Still played a ton of Minecraft. 😃
Started playing in 2014 on 1.7. Been playing the game since
One wonders why Mojang has no interest in optimizations.
Because that doesn't help sell the game. The same reason we don't have quality of life update, that's not marketable as "new mobs, new biomes, new tools, new blocs" it's a marketing bias, not a will of the development/ design team
L comment, compare the performance on modern versions to a 2014 version
@@topiaslaitinen8290 Shit then, even shittier now lol.
@@topiaslaitinen8290 It was bad then too lmao
@@valentyn_154 Yes, sorry, it was a rhetorical question. You are 100% correct.
I’m installing this! Fantastic, literally this game is alive today because of its abundance of FREE content and the games huge community support.
I haven't really played Minecraft in years but when I saw this I had to install it. And I am just... blown away, moved to tears, it's so beautiful. Being able to stand on a hilltop and look into the distance, see the distant rivers and mountain peaks, and then being able to really *go* there, to those distant places, and build anything I want there, and look back in the distance on the hilltop that I came from... it's a completely unprecedented experience. I'm at a loss for words.
Who could have guessed a game about exploration needed to let you see where you are exploring was important for over 10 years
man, i got tears in my eyes, watching you telling you are going to play with your son minecraft is enough to make a young man cry
one of my fondest memorys is playing minecraft as a kid and watching your bf3 gameplay videos while i was saving up to buy it as well. Man, those were the golden times. Great Video as always. Thank you for everything since my sub on 28.11.2013❤️ This made my day
i've been gaming for three decades, to see this level of new tech being applied to older games really makes me glad. as a kid i only dreamt of games reaching levels that we've already surpassed
As far as I know, LoDs as used in the mod Distant Horizons here, have been around the entire time, and is how games like Skyrim and GTA have been able to make the open world a thing.
But yes, nonetheless, it’s really satisfying and inspiring to see the community work towards implementing all of this.
To have the community push the boundaries of limitations so far ahead is wondrous! I hope that they keep it up, and that the devs take note too!
Honestly I’ve always came back to Minecraft, nothing has ever driven me away from the game. Just that new games come out, I play through those then eventually you get the itch to go back and start again in Minecraft. Especially modded Minecraft, with 100+ mod packs that have quests and takes you through the game in a whole new light. Every modpack feels different, a whole new game sometimes and it’s only getting better with time. This is astounding to see that we’ve come this far in tech that a game that’s 12 years old can look just as good as some of the releases today. Even though the blocky look to the game stays the same it just looks good.
Isn't the game 15 years old? (2024 - 2009?)
@@Miraine12 Only if you count the pre-Release versions.
Release-wise, it's 2011-2024 (13 years now, but close enough)
Was gonna say "no way, did Mojang finally learn to code more than one line per year!" And then he said mods...
They do a lot of other stuff behind the scenes, but most of it is just refactoring existing code in ways that make switching versions when modding unnecessarily difficult
@mossy8419 you can make it sound more complex if you want, but you can't defend a company 100+ devs that releases game updates the size of what they do in the timeframe they have. Its one of the most inactive studios around.
@@ZaneDragonBornYeah, though the guy above you highlighted correctly how they make modding harder
But imagine if they focused on optimization a lot more, the game would be much more capable, and modding would have a lot more room to work with.
People could play on much higher end shaders and resource packs, or at the very least not need a mid-high end gaming computer to be able to run at a consistent frame rate with them
Kinda disappointing, feels like they’re just working at a minimum rate just to justify their jobs and keep expectations low
@@ZaneDragonBorn >100+ devs
Are they actual devs? Or are you counting Marketing and Customer Support? :V
Also keep in mind:
1 - Bedrock Team drags ass, they have to wait for the version infamous for being SEVERAL MAJOR RELEASES behind until the two were forcefully Sync'd.
2 - Microsoft Execs decide every feature that gets added, what doesnt get added, and in cases like the Mob Vote, how to add it.
I believe one of the Developers (before the tweet was deleted) had fucked up and let slip that 80% of the "development time" is actually just fighting their bosses/bureaucratic bullshit, and not actually touching the game.
Though, considering the Java Team's clear dislike around the Copper Bulb being changed, and what they said prior, i'm going to bet that was ALSO Corporate Meddling.
Something something "Bedrock doesnt want to lack parity and they dont want to change their code much can you remove this unique feature of copper bulbs for Bedrock Edition plz? I expect it by tomorrow btw"
@@higueraft571weird way to say the same thing as his last sentence
I've been a proponent for Distant Horizons for sooooo long now I'm so happy it's gaining so much steam.
For those that are curious about how it looks in VR I’ve tried it. Unfortunately you really notice the drastically lower block detail when the distant horizon is rendered in. It’s amplified a lot in VR. To be fair it’s not meant for VR. Hopefully in the future that’ll change cause it’s an incredible mod.
For flat screen, levelcap is spot on. it’s an absolute game changer. The distant horizon blends in so well with the rendered world. It’s stunning to get this at little to no fps hit. Really shows the vastness of your Minecraft world.
did you run it with shaders or just DH by itself?
@@OmniMCI tried both with and without shaders. Bliss shader seen in this video, I tried but wasn’t compatible in VR. I used BSL Shader which worked.
@@OmniMC Bliss f's up the depth perception in VR, idk if there are any compatible shaders honestly.
You can increase the quality of the LOD, it's at medium by default, there 2 more higher settings
If you use a shader with far away blur it may look better
If not for mods, I'd never play Minecraft.
Mojang needs to hire this guy.
Mojang doesn’t exist anymore. It’s all Microsoft wether you like to believe it or not…
@@Lurkspur What do you mean? Mojang Studios still exist and work on developing Minecraft, they are just owned by Microsoft. No?
Mojang doesnt care about java, they just care about their cashcow microtransaction bedrock shitware.
MOJANG HIRE THIS MAN!
@@arog7493 Yeah they still "work" on the game. However whether its Microsoft or Mojang, nothing gets done anymore. The largest updates since the sale of Mojang (right around the 1.8 update) was the release of the combat update (1.9) and the Nether+Caves and Cliffs updates (1.16-1.18). Outside of some server improvements made by hiring server plugin developers from the peak days of the game, everything else has just been novel additions to the same base game.
It seems like none of the team has any real technical skill to make large optimizations to the existing game and that has been left to modders. Even Microsofts Bedrock team which was supposed to re-write the game to be more performant and more moddable, and instead left us with a buggy mess that isn't even up to date with the Java version in many ways.
Oh nice, I see Distant Horizons is really gaining some traction lol. The funny thing is they rebuilt Minecraft for consoles in DX12 and didn't even do anything like this, meanwhile one guy added LODs in the hard to work with Java version. Shaders, RT, 120 fps, none of that is in bedrock edition on consoles.
Another mod that works really well with this is ReTerraforged. It changes the terrain generation so that there are bigger biomes with larger mountains, lakes, etc. It really brings out the larger view distance. Unfortunately that mod is also still under development, but once all these mods fully come out, things will get crazy. It's literally like Minecraft 2.
Because Bedrock Edition is built for a shitty smartphone, not a console let alone a PC, it's struggling already on the phones, it doesnt need Distant Horizons to nuke it (also assuming Bedrock Edition even works properly, which it doesnt) :V
@@higueraft571 it seems to run fine of PC. It can do more that triple the max render distance of Java edition. I'm sure if they toned that down they could have added a similar LOD effect to Bedrock edition.
@@Godmode_ON24 >it seems to run fine of PC.
As mentioned, it's Smartphones which basically crash and burn, not PC, they're the minimum specs (and boy are they minimum...) :V

Minecraft was always rendered using "chunks", but neat tech approach to accomplish this
Unless LevelCapGaming is knowledgeable about the development, his term, "chunks" is probably isn't the correct word, and if it is, it's probably referring to something different from normal chunks.
He’s talking about “LOD chunks” as the developer calls them.
You clearly haven't watched the video. Levelcap said that countless times
@@tjpprojects7192 >his term, "chunks" is probably isn't the correct word
It's the term that Notch used.
@@higueraft571 "Chunk" refers specifically to the 16x16 groups of blocks that are loaded in Minecraft. If you want to get technical, nothing else should be called chunks, so what he's talking about aren't chunks.

Did you used a mod for the sky, water and light? Or just Distant Horizons + Tectonic?
It's funny, the moment you said it uses a skybox to "break the limitation" I could see it. I could see what's going on when you mention the "playable zone" vs the "unplayable" being the distant terrain being skyboxed
In a sense it's very similar to how Source engine does it.

It's amazing. This got me back into playing Minecraft again, instantly.
Ive seen some minecraft youtubers cover these mods but seeing my "Battlefield" youtuber praise it really hits high. You got me excited to try and get this mod even if it takes some setting up to do if you can have these amazing results! 🤩
The fact that mojang did not implement this (especially since Microsoft purchase) is insane. It's a pretty old technology really
There was a moment in the past when Mojang wanted to enhance graphics called "super duper graphics pack", but since then they have abandoned the project.
Yet again modders active in a small fraction of the time, what multiple coloured haired devs find impossible to even grasp the concept of.
I love your talking style. Really calm, measured, articulate, intelligent.
This really is an amazing mod and I truly think it’s going to change the game forever! The only reason I won’t immediately jump to integrating this into all of my future worlds in its current state (besides some bugginess) is the fact that you have to preload a pretty large area of the world (at least 1000 chunks) to get it to work seamlessly. Even with new cpus this can take a while, and will take longer when used along side world generation mods like terralith. This can kind of suck when you finally finish preloading and realize that you’re not a huge fan of the area you generated. And when you are satisfied, once you decide to explore more of the world you’ll have to preload even more chunks. For all of the positives that this mod provides this is really a minor issue, but it makes using the mod casually pretty much impossible, at least for me and my last gen pc.
Jesus the bots are crazy today

Haven't watched you for a while but I've been a sub since the battlefield 3 beta. Cool video. Congrats on the son man.
the fact that vanilla minecraft is so ugly compared to anything minimally modified is depressing. mojang could just implement shaders in minecraft at the press of a button
I personally like the simplicity of vanilla. I've downloaded all kinds of mods but always fall back to vanilla.
Everyone prefers such different shaders and settings they’d have to implement native support in such a way that would still allow options and customization
Again, people letting their personal preferences get ahead of what's actually good for the game.
I started playing mc when I was 12 and am now 25, watching this genuinely made me shed a tear, just the nostalgia. Like others said, this is what it felt like when I first found the game
when I first heard about this, I realised they now need a way to have the world curve so we have a good horizon :)
This seems so cool. Just taking peoples old mega builds and being able to see it all at the same time would be magical. Minecraft to a large degree is a bout building cool stuff. And now you can build cool stuff and have everyone see it at a distance.
I remember the first time I played Industrial Craft and I fell in love with the game even more after realizing how amazing minecrafts modding community is. I played it every single day for so many years knocking out modpack after modpack.
Will definitely be downloading this and getting back into mine craft again.
Something I always missed about Alpha and Beta Minecraft was how the render fog made the world feel far more impressive. This mod brings that feeling back for the 2020s
Man I remember back when classic was the gamemode and we existed on small little maps. It's cool to see how the game has progressed over the years.
I used this mod a couple of years ago, glad to see the team kept it going after the creator stepped away, it is an amazing experience for sure.
Can't wait to update my modpack with this and BSL/Complementary..this is gonna be incredible.
That last shot at 7:45 really solidified what a huge change this mod would be for how I play the game. It turns an only somewhat interesting biome into the freaking grand canyon -- somewhere you'd actually want to admire and get lost exploring
This would make exploring with your friends so much more immersive

This looks amazing! I may jump into it again. Last system I played it on was on ps3
The Minecraft theme song got a lot of nostalgia to it. Those were better times for sure.
Something about a realistic sky in Minecraft is just so magical what it does to the game
1:59 thing is, when it first came out, that vanilla view was still nonetheless amazing to us all, just as this new advancement is. Very cool.
This reminds me of in Zelda BOTW with how you can see from one corner of the map to the next which is just so cool.
Seeing this made me get back on minecraft just to enjoy the game once again
Thirty seconds. All it took was thirty seconds to almost cry at the sight of the beautifully rendered Minecraft world.

I really hope one day we will have the same kind of render distance in Vintage Story. This game already gives me the same vibes as Minecraft when I discovered it many years ago, but much more oriented toward nature, exploration and survival, so this kind of mod would have an even greater impact on Vintage Story, I think. Would be hard to stop playing.
Huh, never heard of that game. Looks pretty interesting though. Hopefully it goes on steam someday

I don't really play MC often, but will always have a soft spot for it and be willing to load it up if there's something to do.
I booted this up a few weeks ago, and it really is revelatory. It's really a big deal.
this is what another free open source voxel game called Veloren does, and the vistas are incredible. u can see the rendering increase from the 'low poly' to high when u reach an area quickly, like when using gliders, which are a default part of the game.
I can't wait to show it to my kid too. Thanks for the mod.
Big companies will NEVER adopt anything that is going to show their team up. Ego is a bad thing.
this changes everything, imagine seeing a giant build from very afar or do something with perspective of different buildings. Insane how limited THE limitless game fells right now.
