  • Replacing the rear brake pads and rotors on my 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan. I conducted this repair without the Chrysler Special Tool 8807 used to rotate the caliper piston back into the caliper. This video may not demonstrate proper safety or technique. It is up to you to ensure the safety of yourself and your vehicle.

    Thank you for the video. Have a 3 yr old caravan and was advised that it needs a break job. Dealer quoted me at around $1000. After watching this video I can't believe how easy it is to do it yourself. I now have the confidence to do it my self and save a lot of money. Thank you again!!

    Thanks for the tip on cycling the parking brake. My pedal felt a bit spongy when I finished so I cycled the parking brake about fifty times and now everything's back to normal.

    One important step you might have left out. Make sure you clean the bracket under the clips before you reinstall clips. Rust buildup under these clips will sometimes cause the brake pads to stick. I leaned the hard way as I thought the caliper was frozen which it wasn't.

    Thank you very much. Emergency brake cable on our 2005 Grand Caravan snapped this morning -- I had it on while jacked up to replace the power steering line. I couldn't back up out of the garage but needed to run an errand. For some reason, with the cable snapped, the back wheels weren't 'releasing'. I backed up a little and they've seemed to let off. Another maintenance job to look at when I replace the rear disc pads and rotors. Continued success. Nicely edited and produced.

    Great help. Never seen the rotating piston design before.
    Something for DIYers to keep in mind.
    Those anti-rattle clips, might cause some problems. The ones on the after market brakes I installed are actually stamped into two different shapes. An upper clip and a lower clip.
    If you find that you can't put the pads in with those clips installed, make sure you installed the correct clips on top and bottom.
    I was not initially aware of this and was about to throw the clips out before I noted the two different shapes.
    That said, once the right clips were in, the fit was still fairly tight but doable by hand.

    Very well done video! Something I found on my 2011: I would also suggest that people check are the pins the caliper slides on. In my case the pins on the passenger side had taken in water, and therefore rust, and were binding. The rubber boot on the slide pin was in place and had no tears! I ended up replacing the caliper bracket also because they were so bad. Hope that helps someone...

    Another superb video! My son and I did the front brakes which went quite quickly and easy. The rear brake job was equally easy. We decided NOT to get the special tool and used a pair of needle nose pliers. It was simple and went off without a hitch. Well, we did install both pads without the metal low pad indicator pin on the first side we did and we didn't discover that until we couldn't get both pads on the second side. Whoops! It did add about 10 minutes to the whole job, so not a huge deal. Overall it was a simple job, pads and rotors. Thank you so much for making this video!

    Thank you for clear , understandable, nice video angle and light, conversation without any unrelated topics to replacing brake pads.
    I just wanna make point in my experiences with an issue, when i was using autozone Duralast brakes, that was lasting about 5-9K miles , which is really bad,
    i used them a lot, because of their replacement warranty,
    then i switched to other better brands that started lasting 20-35K miles ,

  • @LowsJuan
    @LowsJuan 10 років тому +1

    Great attention to detail is what I love about your videos. I have had issues with rear discs on cars and I really don't think that the average car really needs discs in the rear. I find that drums last longer and have a lot less problems. Drums are more trouble to change but in my experience they are pretty foolproof. When chev put rear discs on their trucks they had problems with rock getting in them and causing a lot of grief. The design of the parking brakes and other details to me make the rear discs more prone to problems. As for shorter stopping distances, I find that more a function of the brand of vehicle than the type of brakes.

    IMPORTANT NOTE FOR 2012 GRAND CARAVANS BUILT AFTER 03/12: So apparently there was a change made to these back brakes in March of 2012, I went to get pads and rotors for my van and they asked me if it was built BEFORE 03/12 or AFTER 03/12. Mine was built in May 2012, so it was after. Got the pads and rotors, took off the wheel and started disassembling the calipers when I noticed I did not have the mechanical parking brake bracket you encountered on your vehicle in the video. So, if you are doing the repairs on a 2012 GC that was built AFTER 03/12, you probably won't have that bracket to worry about either. Otherwise, everything was exactly as you said and I was able to get my pads and rotors replaced in just a few hours.
    Great video, thanks again!

  • @barriesargent
    @barriesargent 8 років тому

    Great video; helped a lot. A couple of things though 1) after fumbling around 20+ minutes trying to get the new pads in for the first side I decided to remove the caliper slide pins, thus splitting the whole assembly in two. I was then able to put the pads in at my workbench where I had more room to work. On the second side I took the pins out first, and that made life so much simpler. 2) Where do you live that your rotor came off with a few bangs from a rubber mallet!? Mine is so rusted on the hub that only a sledge will get it off, and since I didn't need to replace it I just left it. This made compressing the caliper a bit harder, but oh well. 3) Speaking of compressing the caliper, if your town doesn't have a store that will loan you the tool, and you don't want to buy one, there's a disc brake tool that looks like a cube that you put on the end of a ratchet; works a lot slicker than needle-nose. 4) Lastly, when compressing the caliper make sure the boot doesn't bind; if it does you'll have to crank it back out and do it again.

  • @danmanr
    @danmanr 9 років тому

    Thank you for this, I found it very helpful. The E-brake would have confused me never having dealt with that set up before. This got me through it.
    Couple improvements:
    Instead of turning the plunger till it bottoms out as suggested I turned it till it was just open enough. I measured the new stack-up of the rotor plus pads and I used a depth gauge on the caliper to get it right on. Once installed I only had to push the brake twice to set it and the e-brake 5-6 times.
    Also I found the rubber boot on the plunger stuck bad on the first one I did, making it difficult to turn and have it stay. It also started to do some damage to the boot before it finally let go and aloud the rotation to happen. Knowing this going to the next side I used a very small flat head screw driver to break the boot loose from the plunger, making turning the plunger so much easier.

    I will like to add something because I have to do it in order to be able to screw the caliper piston down
    So you need to release the pressure on the caliper piston by opening the purger valve, of course use a self one (homemade) purger container that way they will not be air on the lines. Same apply for the front and rear
