    Thank you! I just bought a second-hand GT-8 (without manual) and it sounded like crap for all patches. Setting the output to line/phones made all the difference.

    Thank you Steve for the video. I'm someone who's blind so I'm overwhelm by how many nobs and buttons there are. Still, I'm trying to learn how to navigate. Love your video.

      Wtf? How tf are you even doing anything with this device if you're blind? I'm calling bs on that because I'm sighted well enough to navigate life in general, and even I have a seemingly insurmountable task in trying to make sense of this device and all it's crazy knobs and buttons so I just don't see how a blind person would have a working grasp of it..

    the FX chain and the order in which you set them also has a lot to do with taming your sound I found out too after so many years trying to figure why I is the distortion so harsh and with so much uncontrolled feedback!
    Basically it helps to set your effects in this order in FX chain if you want to get the best tamed sound out of it:
    This is a General setup: (First Letter capital means the F is set to On)
    Compression>Overdrive>Distortion>PreAmp>loop(set to Off)>Chorus>Delay>Reverb>DGT
    For 4 cable method: (This setup allows you to use FX loop on any amp that has a send and return feature so you can add/mix the natural sound of your pre-amp head with the other effects of your GT-8) If you're not familiar with the 4 cable method, please look it up on UA-cam or google it!
    Compression>Overdrive>Distortion>Loop (set to On)>PreAmp>>Chorus>Delay>Reverb>DGT
    • Some Important Notes when using the 4 cable method with loop turned on:
    I found its best to set your Pre-amp fx AFTER the LOOP instead of Before on the chain if you want to add a different color to your distortion and also to get rid of any uncontrolled feedback as well!
    I found you get a better sound when you set your pre on the GT-8 to a clean sounding amp like the Roland. ANd get most of your distortions from the Overdrive/Distortion.
    But if you want the distortion form the pre's cabs using the mic parameter, its best to set your Overdrive/Distortions to OFF or just clean overdrive! Else you will get that uncontrolled feedback again. It pays to play around with this so you see what I mean.
    There's more tips I can add to this, but this is the meat and potato of it just to get you all started and avoid my years of frustration with the damn thing.
    Just one more note: The Loop has a send and return level feature in it also. Just click the Loop and then press on the irght button of parameters to get to these addition features or parameters. You can set the output level of the send or return as desired if you find that your getting to much volume that it clips or sounds crazy distorted or uncontrolled feedback.
    This following tutorial helps explain the whole fx order in more detail, and helped me a lot in understanding what I was doing SOOOOOOOOOO wrong on my GT-8. Hope this will help you too > ua-cam.com/video/t80uF_GJPR4/v-deo.html
    Oh, and one more important thing. There's always a tendency for your output levels to rise/go louder everytime you add another effect into your chain. Try to keep all of your effects levels at unity gain for best sound. You want character in sound, not louder. I always start all of my volume levels with pedal board master output knob set to max, and a clean sound from the tuning button which also bypasses entire effects patch so you can listen to your guitar at its natural volume without all the effects turned on. Use this volume level as your starting point to setting all of your effects levels. You can click the tuning on/off to A/B the difference and compare.
    Good Luck all!

    Brilliant videos, your GT-8 tutorials are excellent, I have had mine a couple of years and I've just recently realised that the line out sound is the best, I hated the digital sound I was getting in the front end of the amp. Didn't realise about the meter level.
    Thanks a mill for the great videos, just about to watch the fx only vid. Excellent english by the way

    Thanks very much for this, I have read the manual and read a home made guide to the GT8 but your explanations here have really helped me get a better tone out of the GT8 already, I was about to trade in for a line 6 floor pod.
    p.s. your english is fantastic, as an englishman I hate that as a society we are so bad at other languages but people like yourself are so good at speaking English!

    You have a nob to adjust the level of Patch.You can adjust the volume your presets and patch,so its really up to you.The nob between the LCD and speed dial is the patch volume control and the level nob next to the presence button is the volume control for the preset.

    I don't agree with you on the output select,but I agree with you on the fact that there is too many options on the GT-8.I just learned that if you put the limiter in front in the loop that it will reduce the noise...got to try it and find out.

  • @stevezane
    @stevezane  12 років тому

    That's up to you..it depends on what effect you want and in what order you want it.Just make shure you line up the compressor and limiter in front.

  • @glenperry9752

    Thank you for the great tips! Seems some people are disappointed that the GT-8 doesn't have an easy interface for backing up to a computer. This is probably a no-brainer but for me the easiest way to backup is to get a second GT-8 (available at great prices now) and do a system dump from one to the other via a standard midi cable. Takes about 2 minutes and you have a clone of all your patches and settings (everything!) on another GT-8, ready to use as a backup in case your main GT-8 fails at a bad time.
    Another very cool feature I've recently explored is it's ability to do a gradual fade from one sound to another with the expression pedal, for example, pedal forward is Overdrive and pedal back is Tremolo, and rocking the pedal slowly (or quickly) from full forward to full back morphs your sound from whatever overdrive you like to tremolo (or any 2 different sounds) (or 3 for that matter). You can set it so the pedal changes your sound several times from full forward to full back, but you don't want to put too many in there or it will be difficult to control the pedal from one sound to the next.

      That’s ridiculous. Just upgrade to a newer unit if you’re going to be spending any money. Why would you buy another outdated obsolete version when you can get the GT 1 for under $150. Or just save your money for the Helix or one of the new Boss models which are made by Roland.

    Hi....I am currently using a Line 6 Floor Pod Plus. It is a lot simpler than the GT-8. Being easy to use is a real plus for me. The floor pod can not Midi-Sync to my Alesis SR-16 so that is a slight drawback. The GT-8 has a more features and does Midi-Sync. I still use my GT-8 on occasion as well as my Line 6 Amp. I also use a POD and a V-AMP. Finding the right set-up can be daunting!

    i do have the manual, i'm already running two amps at once... the manual doesn't seem to be answering my question though... what you mentioned is what i'm trying to do... channel A in the left amp, channel B in the right amp... finding the stereo delay is filling both sides when i turn up the levels the right way, but it's still a bit beyond me... way more complex than anything i've evr used... thnx for the reply, bud...

    and The Hi Eq is all about hi sounds which you don't want to have too much of it or it will become very painful to people ears,but if too low you will sound flat.The high cut will remove high sounds.
    The best thing is to play with it and let your ears judge the sound.

    All you EQ are set on Flat when you edit them.Falt is the same as you would have them in the middle of your analog Eq which is 0db. If you lower the number you will lower the fader on your analog and when you upper the number you will push up the fader on the analog.They are the same,but the analog in more graphical and the digital is numeric and yes maybe a bit more complicated if you don't understand the frequencies.Good Luck!

    Yes you can.You will need a sound card with SPDIF,but I do it with the 1/4 jack input and it sounds good enough.There is a few models of affordable sound cards such as M-Audio fast track pro or Presonus firbox which will do the job well!

    The Low cut off will remove some bass from your sound.Low EQ will add some bass.Low mid is a mix of bass and mid which is a bit more nasal sounding..you can start at 500 Hz.Low mid Eq is a nasal sound more based on bass.Mid Eq is very nasal you don't want it to boosted on your guitar sound.Hi-Mid Eq is a mix on Hi sound with Mid which is good on guitar to cut thru the sound.

  • @stevezane
    @stevezane  13 років тому

    @JonathanAnon Not really..its more for avoiding some unwanted noise.If you have a problem with levels when making patches you could always buy a real db meter and work with that..I know its sometimes hard to have the clean sound equal the distortion sound,,the distortion always seem to be lower than the clean...that could be a useful tool.

    Hey man, believe it or not, but I managed to fix the problem:
    Switch the gt8 off, then keep the CTL/EXP button pressed in (the button to the right of the master button) and then switch the gt8 on. It will then say "Exp calibration". Set pedal to min. Tilt the pedal all the way back to set the min and press write, then tilt the pedal all the way forward to set the max, and then THRESHOLD means how hard you have to press. I set mine to about 9, makes it harder to press down on. Hope it helps

    Are you usin the GT-8 as a preamp in your Marshall? The volume nob is just an output...doesn't really matter what level it is set on.Just set it for you to be comfortable.This nob is very good especially live when one of your patch is too loud...you can just lower it right there on the spot.

    I have a GT8 and I am very happy with it. There's just one thing I HATE about it. I used to have a GT6 before (which was stolen..). In the GT6, you access bypass / tuner by simply pushing the preset footswitch. In the GT8, you can't do it !!!! you have to bend over and push the "tuner / bypass" button, or assign the CTL switch to do that ............or use an external FS. I can't understand why you can't access bypass the same way as in the GT6

    @JEM556 , Could it be that your low strings are too low?try each note on each low string and try to hear where it buzz the most.It could be that your strings are too low or it might be that the Pickup is too low or too high..if its too high you will get some over tones which sounds dead and if too low it will sound weak.Try that and let me know what is happening.

    Steve, I made the output meter change to about 80%, pushed EXIT, hit a different patch, came back to the original patch and the meter went back to what it was before the adjustment. Clicking WRITE didnt take. What do I do to make it stay at the recent adjustment? - THANK YOU - Trowerr

    Yes it is..You can even have two amps and send channel A in one of then and channel B in the other..or you can do the same in a P.A.I don't have the GT-8 anymore..do you have the owner's manual? If not i'll look in to it for you.

    @MalcaratMartinez I don't know if we're talking about the same thing but in my GT-8 i just press the same footwitch i'm using, if i'm using 1 just press the same 1 a second time. Again, i don't know if we're talking about the same thing. If i'm wrong let me know please.

    Steve plz give me some advice on how to set my expression pedal to turn on/off the wah wah. I've watched some videos and did exactly what they told me but it hasn't worked yet. do I need to have certain settings programed a certain way in order for me to set my expression pedal as wah wah on/off?

      What type of system board do you have. The Boss or some other expression system. It really makes a difference even if you have a year difference in some pedal boards systems......it gets real complicated to get it up and correct each time you modify your effects.

  • @stevezane
    @stevezane  14 років тому

    yes what you say makes sense..i just don't have the technical words to explain well...I could do it better in French,but no one would look...lol What i meant was that there is 10 virtual nobs(EQ's) including the low cut mid cut and high cut.

  • @dickyp1

    is it possible to run channel's A and B at the same time?? if so, how do i get it there?? i just got my GT-8 3 days ago, it's nice, sounds amazing, but wow it's complex!!
