Finally!! after more than 15 years I have been able to connect my GT-8 to the pc. No more cheap usb midi cables with broken pins. I think I've seen your video like 15000 times and I've felt like throwing the pedalboard out the window and you with it hahaha (it's a joke the last hahaha). Today I'm going to go get drunk to celebrate! This has been the best thing about this shitty year!!! to those of you who are in the same situation as I will tell you that you do not have to buy either the original ROLAND cable or the cheap aliexpress. A nightmare that is already over after 15 years!! Long live the mother who gave birth to me!!
I don't know if you still read these but you really saved me on a simple reference to hooking up the midi cords and switching the ins and outs. I actually needed that on some old synth keyboard controllers and that helped a lot! Thanks man.
Hi. Yes I fixed it easily. I made the mistake of buying a cheap midi cable and it couldn't handle the data transfer. I bought a Roland midi cable which cost about UK£30.00 and the result was instant. No problems at all connecting and it works just like on Scott's video. Good luck and let me know if you have any further problems. Albie (Blue Arse Fly)
Thank you for that bro, I was using the Line 6 HD 500x (for ease of use on the PC), when I saw your video I dug my GT8 out...game changer, thanks again, M.
Just as an update to this: I just picked up a 2nd hand Boss GT 8 locally and this was a problem for me. After watching this video I bought the below cable and it works great. Bear in mind tho, the cable's MIDI-Out plugs into your GT8's MIDI-IN and the cable's MIDI-In plugs into the GT8's MIDI-Out. Confusing, but definitely works like a charm. Literally plug and play. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FTJXFLT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
For the people who have a Midimate II interface usb cable. You might need to select MIDIMATE II on the midi in port, and the MIDIOUT2 (MIDIMATE II) as the midi out port or vice versa, depending on wich way you connected it. I ordered a Roland UM-ONE MIDI interface mk2 because i couldn't figure it out how to connect my GT-8, and that worked great. But than i realized the midimate needs to be set up diffrently, compared to other midi usb interfaces!!
Great job Scott. I used your info to backup my GT-8 to my windows PC. I even copied and pasted the patch names to a spreadsheet I keep for quick reference. Thanks.
I still use mine for Electric and it sounds great, very versatile with good cleans going into a tube amp. However does anyone have any tips for how to use it with a piezo equipped acoustic guitar so there isn’t fizz on the decay when running straight to the board?
Hi there I have a GT6 and followed all your steps alshave a Roland midi interface cable and still won’t connect...do you have anymore ideas to y I can’t connect...it did last week but won’t now...cheers
I'm trying to do this on my gt5 with no lucky when i use the connect button. The weird thing is that the usbmidi converter has leds where's no indication of midi signal. In the past i used the usbmidi converter with keyboards as a midi controller with no problem
Hi can I have some help ?? I have a PC with windows 11 and I connected my BOSS GT-8 windows pedals via the midi in-out USB cable, it detects the midi-usb I put the boss in the correct position using the midi system but when I CONNECT it gives me connection error WHAT CAN I DO?? doesn't work with windows 11 or is there anything else ??? Thank you
The fact you are not using the 4 cable method shouldn't affect your connectivity to the gt8. First make sure in your device manager of windows that it has installed correctly. Unplug and replug back into another usb port and check it says that out has installed out correctly. Them make sure your midi out is plugged into the midi in on the gt8, then your midi in to your midi out on the gt8 has your midi in. This is so it acts as a loop. Remember to select your midi device in the preferences of the gt8 software and then click connect. Failing that, check the midi settings are the same as i showed you in the video.
Any idea how I can get the input to be detected on my windows 10 laptop? Using a proster midi to usb cable. Under preferences, Output has the correct selection but input doesn't. Any help appreciated. Thanks
Ok Scott, your video is very interesting. I would like to ask you how I can make a full backup of the gt8, to have it when the battery is exhausted. thank you.
I'm trying to back up my patches by uploading to my MacBook, but having problems. (Actually I want to transfer patches from one GT-8 to another. but for now I just have a Midi to USB cable, so I'm trying this method) I've installed all the software and was even able to get Boss's Paul Hanson Patch downloaded to my GT-8, but I'm having no luck uploading patches so I can save them. Any advice on this would be much appreciated.
hi there Scott i know its kinda outdated for this question but is ok to use the USB to MIDI converter being sold from china this days? i couldnt find a MIDI converter like what you used in this video so i was hoping if its any better to get the one's from china? Btw i have a GT 3 , many thanks!!
Thanks Brother. I have been getting back into playing guitar and messing around with effects blew off the dust from GT-8 lol. Just a question my red number display has messed up awhile back...Just wondering if you knew how to fix it or any suggestions?
Hi Scott. I followed your instructions and driver is successfully installed on my Windows 7 and set MIDI preferences in GT floorboard software, but when I click "Connect" button it says "Patch data transfer failed, are the correct MIDI ports selected? Please make sure that GT8 is connected correctly and re-try". Any ideas how to fix that?
Dude, just find out how Santana uses amps n pedals, than edit you're own.. I'm also look for a SRV sound, and I know he uses Fender ReverbAmp and a Ibanez tube screamer... Than you choose you're Goods to the Cart and throw it In the food processor inside you're gt 8 and try create sounds
Hey dude. Stupid question, but when it’s all connected, can you hear the patches as you’re editing? Ie, can you play the guitar through the interface so you can tweak the sounds as you do without having to unplug from the pc and run into an amp, or is there a trick? Thanks.
Great Video. Congratulations. I saw that, you use the 4 cables Method and I would like ask you... With GT8 I can use together the Distortion from my Amp in the Loop and also for example: one Ts-cream as Booster ? I want more Distortion, you Know? Thanks so much Danilo
Hmmm are you using a usb midi converter? Apparently as I’ve seen by comments on here it looks like some work some don’t. Make sure you have the setting of pc mode for usb in the settings, or try the midi cables the other way around. However again not sure with the GT6 as not had one and hard to help these days as it’s from memory and I have a line 6 HT effects instead. The usb converter I had was a cheap one called tanhong of Amazon.
Hi Scott even after connecting USB midi interface on boss Gt 5 it always shows "select proper midi interface setting " also after green light on "connect" it shows " your device is not properly connected" please make complete video on problem related like mine.😃😃😃Thanks you on advance
Can people help with sourcing the gear necessary to do this. I'm wondering if the Roland um-one mk 2 interface will work? Or will the iConnectivity mio?
Hi Scott, Don''t know if you're still taking questions on this, but I've tearing my hair out trying to get the transfer to work. I keep getting the message that it can't find the GT-8. I've changed the cable sockets round upteen times. Any suggestions gratefully received.
Did you fix the problem. I have the same problem... i cant connect my gt-8 to my pc... everything made like showed on video and again no positive results....if you solved the problem please write me..i need to back up my gt-8 asap.

Hi Scott, i ran in to a 'little' problem using the editor. I really hope you have some experience with it. As i was creating 2 new sounds (1 clean and 1 overdrive) my gt8 messed up the first one when i was saving the second. At first it seems as if he copies the second sound over the first, but when you take a closer look it turns out that he copies some of it, and keeps the rest. Really messed up, right? Have you heard of this problem before?
RenW vdW UPDATE: for anyone running into the same problem, i've changed the battery and reset it to the factory settings. Problem gone. Worked very well for me as I was only now starting to understand my gt8 and had no good sound yet. So save yours first if you still can!
Just FYI for anyone trying to do this, the cheap usb to midi converters on amazon do not work...specifically the one with the clef on the side, silver cables. good vid tho
sAwAi1992 Tbh idk the cheapest one that will work..I. was told the Roland one works its 40$ on amazon and obviously the one he uses in this video but idk which that one is...
Thanks for info...because I have that one with the clef and silver cables and it installs drivers successfully but it can't transfer data from GT8 to FxFloorBoard software. I hope that expensive one will fix the problem.
Shit, I bought a Roland MIDI a few years ago, misunderstanding that I could just download existing band guitar tones onto my GT-8. I find this machine to be excessively complex, while I'm only after an old school death metal sound.

Mainly astonished you've managed to keep your GT-8 looking so pristine. Mine looks like a dog's breakfast :)

Can you give a link to the Tahorng Musical Instrument?
Excellent job, Scott! You saved me a LOT of time!!!
Thanks!
I still use mine for Electric and it sounds great, very versatile with good cleans going into a tube amp. However does anyone have any tips for how to use it with a piezo equipped acoustic guitar so there isn’t fizz on the decay when running straight to the board?

hi scott. i followed all your instructions but the gt8 and pc still won't make a connection and gives me an error all the time. what will i do?
My write button doesn't work, can I save my settings with this program? Or do I need the write button to save it?
Hi, Scott. I did all the steps, but it keeps saying that I have a connection error, and it can`t find the GT8...

So I can setting GT-8 in PC right?
The fxfloorboard doesn't detect my boss Gt-8! I use a midi/usb interface and plug the device correctly. I don't use the 4 cable method. How can I do?
Great Video. Congratulations. I saw that, you use the 4 cables Method and I would like ask you...

The edit screen on your pc or on the gt8?? If its on the pc then simply try another screen resolution
Two words: Thank You !
Maybe just drivers. Simply try another USB port of it worked before
Awesome .. I'm a boss user gt8 but i cant use it on pc windows 7 because no DRIVER .. anyone have BOSS GT8 DRIVER, please share link .. thanx 😊
