    I've learned a lot doing this video and receiving feedback from the online community. I want to begin by saying that it is highly unlikely the Dell motherboard is vendor locked, though there's still a small chance it is. However, more importantly, the 0.8 GHz limit may be related more to power supply limits than Manufacturer meddling. I knew fixes were possible and this process was meant as a tech experiment. I will post a future video explaining my findings and research.

      I'm glad to see that you've discovered the power supply discrepancy. With Dell products like this it uses the center pin of the power supply to tell the motherboard what the power supply is capable of and if you get a power supply that doesn't send the right signal or there is an issue with the DC jack on the system itself the CPU will often lock to its lowest clock.

    Hello:
    Sorry for my bad English, I am using a translator.
    I am in the business of repairing/selling second hand equipment.
    The speed lock on Dell equipment is because of the power supply. The power supply, or the computer, does not detect the wattage correctly and locks the CPU at the minimum speed.
    Use a new/original Dell charger, and you will see the problem go away.
    Greetings from Spain.

      if the power supply not working (oem), for windows you can use software clock setting tools and has it run on boots. (I have this problem on mine as the mother board failed to detect proper wattage). My guess on, why it was like that, on positive note, maybe it was designed not to overload an adapter and risk fire hazard.

    You are using the wrong PSU for the micro if it is getting downclocked all the time. I have seen this with dells since the mid 00's.

    I got one of these for $15 a while back, with an i3-7100t in it. Jammed an i5 7500 in it, and hooked up a 250W power supply I had lying around. It runs fine, but only turbos for a tiny bit before hitting 100°c. Now, it's used for controlling a 3d printer and doing some CAD.

    There is no vendor lock. Your 6th gen desktop probably A) Doesn't support 7th gen OR B) needs a BIOS update to support 7th gen. Most 6th gen motherboards do NOT support 7th gen out of the box. Rarely do you see vender locking at this level, it's more likely with OEM only chips OR specific classes of Xeons. Most of these desktop class CPUs "JUST WORK" assuming your board/chipset AND BIOS are supported.

    You know, you can go to Dell Refurbished and get an i5 8500 or i5 8600 (6c 6t) for less than $200, both the MFF and SFF.
    Also, as a Dell reseller, I can tell you that Dell does not lock a CPU at 0.8 GHz. At that rate, the CPU is not getting power. Either the CPU is defective, the BiOS has never been updated, or the unit has shorted from heat. Look at the thermal paste pattern, which is indicative of an overheating issue.

  • @elikirkwood4580
    @elikirkwood4580 Рік тому +1

    I wonder if the clockspeed issue you had on the i7 was related to that thermal paste spread. It looked like the cooler was barely contacting the cpu there which would mean little to no thermal transfer between the two

    I have been working with these micro pcs from dell for a while. I got to the conclusion that the 0.8ghz is not related to bios or vender locking it but to power. Had luck replacing the power brick ( oem from dell) and sometimes replacing the dc power conector from the motherboard. This is a "safety " feature from Dell, where the MB checks the power and, if it doesnt meets the corret value, will lock the frequency. Some models you can see the warnig from the BIOS.

  • @indonesiaamerica7050
    @indonesiaamerica7050 Рік тому +2

    Lots of PC OEM systems are "locked" or restricted due to heat management. You see this all the time in anything "miniature" with limited ventilation and in some cases no internal fan.

  • @ytguy2010

    1. As far as I know the vendor lock only applies to AMD Ryzen CPU's, not any Intel CPU's.
    2. That HP computer only supports 6th gen CPU's.
    3. The i5-6400 will work in the Dell computer, but you need a 90W (or higher) power supply because that CPU is rated at 65W by itself.

    Wutup Andy! I've got a client w this same computer and we've run in to it a few times where it'll get stuck on .08GHz. Usually a reboot solves it at least temporarily. I feel like it started after we did numerous Dell updates including BIOS updates. I'm an update addict and I've been burned plenty of times lately by doing these damn updates. A client's Epson printer recently stopped using the ink in the unit after we did a firmware update. Right before our eyes it started saying we couldn't use the ink that was working 2 minutes before the update. Incredibly shady. But back to this goofy Dell situation - have you done BIOS updates to it? Another problem I've read about can be the power supply - possibly changing that may help. Are you saying there's some other problem with yours where there is a setting in the BIOS you can't change that's keeping it at .08GHz?

      @@andysilvers9532 HP ProDesk G2 does not support 7th gen. G3 supports both 6th and 7th gen. The rule of thumb is, a pre-build computer will only support the processors it was offered with, even if the chipset would allow it. I made the same assumption once and was disappointed that I was not able to upgrade AMD A12 processor to a Ryzen, despite both using AM4 socket. Old pre-builds are cheap for a reason.
