The song was about her father and her husband. She’s now divorced. She said in a interview she didn’t want to perform the song anymore. She said it’s a hard song to sing anyways but now even more so, as things with her husband turned out very different to how she believed them to be when she wrote the song. Her husband basically done the same thing to her as her father like used her for money. Instead on her Vegas residency she rewrote some of the lyrics.
She's rewritten some of the words to this to reflect her current feelings.
She did sing this song when she was in Las Vegas and she changed the words. It’s pretty good

She is amazing in this, but her piano player is incredible how is able to stay with her as she’s crying. It’s phenomenal!

Keith Urban had just lost his father that is why he was so emotional. What a great song though from Kelly, I cry everytime I see this video.

She is a great lyricist in addition to an outstanding singer, Mom, Talkshow Host and human being. She is also an empath like you and myself as well.
Her newest album came out last June called Chemistry. It covers the arc of her relationship with her ex husband. The album is so good. It was number 6 out of the top 200 albums. Deserves more attention than it receives. Hopefully you can give it a listen.

Kelly Clarkson is the reason I tried out for American idol on the second season and the 9th season because I was so inspired by her. I didn't make it very far but it was still a great experience and I still love to sing but I sing at church now and I sing all my channel too❤

I watched this episode when it aired and cried, and cried many times watching it again later. I was doing good watching this video, but as soon as you wiped your eyes, the tears came. It really is a beautiful and emotional song. My dad was always in my life until he died, and I'm very thankful my parents never divorced. Thanks for sharing your reaction. First time I've seen any of your videos.

Absolutely beyong gorgeous song. My father left me at 4 and at 6 years old and on I didn't have my real dad in my life. But at 5 years old my mom met someone else who is not my step dad but to me he will always be my real dad cause as the song says "piece by piece" he restored my faith in what a father is supposed to be. And he never walked away. He walked in wanting to love me for me without ever asking anything from me in return. This song is so relatable for me personally. I loved it. Absolutely love it. ❤️

I lost my mom to cancer as well April 5th 2007 lost my Dad April 20th 2007 renal failure buried them together miss them everyday ❤😢

I have always LOVED Kelly's voice but this song touched me like few songs have. My parents divorced when I was 2 and while my dad lived nearby, he rarely made time for us. He then moved far away, saying there was "nothing keeping him here" (only his 6 kids and 3 grandchildren at the time). But the man I eventually married was and always has been an excellent father - totally involved in every aspect of our kids' lives and puts them first, even after we got divorced. We did 50/50 custody, which I never even thought to contest, as I was happy for my kids, that their father WANTED them!!!! Even when we went through periods of hating each other, I was always grateful that he was good and loving to THEM, as they were who mattered in the situation. They've benefited immeasurably by having both parents in their lives equal amounts post divorce. This song hit everything for me - the damage from my dad, leaving feelings of abandonment, worthlessness and little trust in men/fathers - to restoring that faith and trust in my children's father, knowing our kids would ALWAYS be loved and put first and never have to feel what I felt growing up.

I can’t hear the strain of her breathing. She is very pregnant and it is hard to fill your lungs that far along. I commend her for her bravery, for getting up there on stage with everything that happened to her, being hugely pregnant, and struggling to breathe.

My daughter lost her father at 6 years old. 6 months later I met the man who is my husband now of three years (together for 7) and took my daughter in like his own. My daughter is now 13. This song gets me every time I hear it.

It’s actually about her then husband showing her what a real father & man was supposed to be like, granted now they are divorced and he didn’t end up being like she thought he was. She rewrote some of the lyrics recently so that she would still be able to sing the song though and it’s great! It’s more of a self-empowering/self-love message.

This song makes me cry as I had a bio dad who was deadbeat then I get my stepdad who was amazing and helped me trust people again. Lost him a few few years so it causes me tears but because I got a good dad in the end just by marriage not DNA.

Kelly’s best music is her lesser known music, imo. I’m a huge fan of hers but not a huge fan of some of her biggest hits. I recommend checking out more of her music. My favorite KC albums are My December, Meaning of Life, and Chemistry. This performance is beautiful and emotional but doesn’t show off her amazing vocals as much as some other songs do. Her personality is so genuine and refreshing as well. Definitely recommend diving into some of her lesser known songs (Tightrope, Maybe, Just Missed the Train, Sober,Medicine, Move You, My Mistake, Skip This Part, etc.) if you want to.😊

I’m not a big fan of mainstream pop so that’s probably part of the reason why I like the ones that I like so much and don’t like others as much lol.
