You’re right one nail or screw i prefer screws down the middle of the board one screw down middle of the batten this allows the board expand and contract without splitting
Rigid trailers (non-twisting), are best built using welded steel tubing. There's reasons not to use tube framing (weight, corrosion from the inside, cost), but welded tubing produces the stiffest assemblies.
