  • I'm SO glad we were able to help this guy, get him off the streets and make him feel much, much better!
Here's a rundown of everything that the vets did...
Firstly his claws were very ingrown and infected, so they trimmed them as far back as they could and soaked his paws in iodine to work on the infection, because his paws were so painful he must have been hunching down to stay warm and didn't move around a lot, due to this he developed sores on the back of his legs which is why I was seeing blood… even though this is horrible, I'm glad he didn't have any more serious internal injuries, I thought he may have been hit by a car.
His ears were also infected, so while he was mildly sedated they thoroughly cleaned them and put medicine in them… he has dental issues, only has 6 teeth left and will need future dental work, he also has conjunctivitis hence the eye drops
They gave him an antibiotic shot and he's congested too so we will be starting him on meds for that…
Of course he was also crawling in fleas, so they gave him Capstar (internal medicine which kills fleas almost straight away) and then added topical flea meds too …. I HATE FLEAS!
*The BEST news is that he tested negative for everything on the SNAP test which tests for FIV, Feline Leukemia and heart worms!!
He hasn't been neutered and we scanned for a microchip and didn't find one (I'm VERY glad we didn't) … my thoughts are that he was owned by someone who was maybe trying to breed him, he was neglected for a long time since it takes a long time for claws to get that bad… if he was a straight up street cat, all the walking around they do and scratching on trees keeps them pretty short. Plus is overall condition was very poor.
Then he ended up on the streets somehow, either he was dumped by his owner or the family of his owner after he/she passed away or he escaped? … I'd love to know his story, but it would more than likely make me very mad, the bottom line is he's feeling much better than he was, he has a full belly and a warm bed with a good foster Mom!
The vet guesstimated his age to be between 8 and 10 years old, so we will make sure the second half of his life is lived in luxury surrounded by people who love him!
Special thanks to St Francis Society Animal Rescue and their volunteers for all their help! - www.stfrancisre...

I have a message from Logan:
“Before you found me was a blur. I think I chose not to remember. What I do remember was constant discomfort and pain, and a constant hanging loneliness. I did not trust you when you took me. I am glad you did. You and the other humans fixed me, fed me, and now care for me. I am not very long for this world now. But I am content. Thank you.”
You did good by one of my lost toms. Continue to care for them, you do so well.

I don't know why this cat has affected me so much, I've seen cat rescue videos before but I'm VERY emotional about this poor old boy, he didn't even seem like he had the energy or will to hiss when he had been caught. Poor thing. I hope he's healthy enough to be adoptable, soon. He deserves to be comfortable and loved at his age.

A kitten being born spontaneously with this Lykoi gene mutation is very rare, and those trying to breed for it ask on the upside of $2,400 for the most common "black roan." Other coat colors are harder to breed for and can cost quite a bit more so someone may have paid a pretty penny for him at some time. Of course, all of us here know Logan (a more noble name than Wolfie!) is priceless! Blessings to all those caring for and all of us loving him!

Maybe he was used in a breeding mill. That's the only explanation I have how someone who at one point paid a lot of money would neglect their 'property' that way. Or he belonged to someone in desperate need of help for themselves. I've seen pets in horrible condition from old or mentally ill people that didn't abuse their pets on purpose.

KeltonSmith - 99.99999% of the time they are also victims of abuse as children. What was done to their psyches in childhood is all they know. Fear, anger, hate. It's a horrible horrible cycle. Some people, who have true intestinal fortitude and are very smart, will be determined never to do to any creature (animal or human) what was done to them but, unfortunately, most of the time they simply repeat it. They may even have brain damage as a result of childhood abuse. Humans are probably an aberration of nature.

While completely agreeing, I should point out that people treat PEOPLE even worse! Homeless people often adopt a dog because they get more hand-outs if the dog's with them when they panhandle. The amount of hatred people will pour on other people - even figurative, random, anonymous people they've never met - is literally insane.
Good people control that impulse in themselves. But the world is full of the rest, and for some reason, they're the ones who usually determine what a given community or society does.

I love cats. About three years ago I was outside talking with my daughter and we heard this tiny meow. We went to look and found this 8 week old kitten that was almost bald and infested with fleas. I picked him up and he instantly took to me. My heart melted and I just had to do something for him. I took him inside, gave him a flea bath and I could not believe all the fleas that fell off him. After I dried him off he looked very bad. Bites all over him. I took him to the vet and they said he had scabies and I should just put him to sleep. I said no! Those are just flea bites. So with my determination and disagreement I took him home. All his hair came back. It's very soft, I neutered him and have him and continue to give him lots of love. Because he is all black I named him, Bear.

If you think he was used for breeding and then dumped you might find his former owner by doing a search for Lykoi breeders/cats in the area. I would bet their breeding set up is less than humane. You may be able to use DNA to prove other offspring are related to him to prove they had him before being dumped.

Agreed - 100%. Sitting here with my pampered calico, who’s come to see why I’m crying my eyes out. I sadly believe that humans are the only animals ever to come into this world with cruel hearts. I know some of us become that way because we are abused, too. But I also hope and pray - and almost dare to believe - that even the worst of us can become a little better by reaching out and caring for these innocents. By his slowed body movements and lack of self care (cats usually scratch objects to shed the outer layer of their claws, keeping them clean and sharp, the dirty coat and gunky eyes) you got him just in time. His body was beginning to shut down and give up. Were their any other conditions going on?
On another note, mad respect for someone willing to take in any injured animal. Too many people don't because they don't care or can't afford the bill likely to come with it (not all shelters will just take an animal). I'm glad he wasn't feral. Our cat Booger (RIP) was a feral cat when he showed up in my yard. It took close to 7 years of caring for and sitting with him before he was comfortable with me enough to come in the house. He had one eye that was ruptured and leaked continuously until it was addressed by a vet.

I saw fleas and with the hair loss on the face and tail, it's likely kitty has malnutrition but also mange. The respiratory/eye stuff and those poor infected feet will get taken care of first, as well as dental work so kitty can start to get good nutrition, and once the feet are a bit healed they can bathe with a good mange shampoo and get rid of those fleas! Poor little cat, must have a strong spirit and will to live though!

This is from the foster mom's instagram: 'They gave him capstar to begin killing the fleas covering his body right away (he has a flea allergy) and also gave him a topical for longer-term flea control.
He received an antibiotic injection to help with all of his infections (eyes, ears, paws, legs, upper/ lower respiratory). They flushed his ears containing a large amount of yellow, wet debris, and tan crusting.
They noted extreme malnourishment and muscle atrophy. They also noted he only has about 9 teeth remaining due to severe periodontal disease and said surgery would be needed once he was feeling better. His breathing was extremely labored due to congestion with thick yellow nasal discharge. He had large decubital ulcers on both hocks resulting from patient unwilling or unable to move (too painful vs stuck in a small cage).
Lastly, Logan’s paws had extremely thick nails that had all grown into his paw pads. The vets trimmed all nails and had to remove pieces of nails that had been embedded into his paw pads. They said the paws smelled “terrible” from the severe infection.'

My guess is that someone used him for breeding and never let him out of a confined area... cats claws dont get like that just because they're outside and uncared for. They wear them down naturally. He was confined somewhere that didn't let him scratch on anything. I bet he got sick and the breeder dumped him since he wasn't profitable anymore. :(

    • @DeadKraken

@@Palitato That's what I thought too, it's not normal for a cat to have claws like that! Unless in Lykois the claws grow unnaturally long, the poor animal was caged or kept in a place where he couldn't even move enough to consume his claws.

He didn't put up much of a fuss when you trapped him. I bet he knew he was getting help. In November we trapped a stray that had been coming around our house all summer. We had him neutered and vaccinated. He's an indoor kitty now and adapting to his new life very well. He's shown no interest in going outside again. Our four resident cats accepted him right away as a member of the family with no hostility at all. We know nothing about his background. He simply showed up so we took care of him. He's learned to play and gets along especially well with our youngest boy kitty. I'm eager to see updates on this cat. I'm sure he can be nursed back to excellent health.

@@FuzzyElf Thanks for the reply. I'm amazed at how well our first trap and neuter attempt went and at how well subject kitty has adopted to indoor life. He's warm, well fed, loved and comfortable. He's smart enough to understand this is a far better life than what he had outdoors even though I hated to take away his kingdom. I didn't mention he was covered in fleas and ticks, too. Obviously that's been remedied. I took care of that even before he was trapped and brought inside. Kudos to Front Line!
