DMF are junk, change them out asap. I DID, changed to race lightweight flywheel. Well worth the flaw fix! There's more flaws like the shifter bushings on the shifter itself under the car, mines broke so I was stuck on the side of the highway, couldn't go in gear because of 2 little rubber bushings.😡 Mind as well change those out if your gonna do a clutch/DMF job, because you have drop everything under the car to get to the clutch/DMF! Good weekend project! Happy Fixing!
I've got a DMF in both my Mk.1 TT and in my TDI Golf. I've already purchased a SMF (single Mass Flywheel) & Sachs clutch for when the DMF starts to go on the TDI, but would be interested in s SMF recommendation for the TT. Great video idea for you & Humble Mechanic... PROS & CONS of replacing a DMF with a SMF.
This sound is symptoms of dmf failure. Hearing clicking sounds during gear change also give early signs of dmf failure. But the ultimate failing sound is constant clutter sound in neutral and in drive.
If I need to run the car while up ,I always support the front suspension through from the engine compartment. Dont want my cv joints knackered. I only have front wheel drive .but how would I go about supporting the back if I had all wheel or 4 wheel drive ? Thanks
I have an A5 2010 with s-tronic which makes a click noise but only if I go off the gas and then back on. There is also a gap/pause between hitting the gas and actually accelerating. Very noticeable when rolling in stop and go traffic. Is this the flywheel too?
Hey Paul, is this also accompanied by a lurching/bucking when driving? Have a very similar sounding situation in my MK7 GTI. Had that clunk all winter (sometimes it doesn't happen as much when it's warm out for some reason), but also get a lurch or delay on acceleration and throttle lift-off or braking. Because of the lurching I thought it was worn mounts, but I have brand new 034 upper and lower inserts and BFI stage 1 motor and trans mounts now, and the problem persists. The clunk when it happens is very similar to your video, but it doesn't happen every time. No tune, no aggressive driving. Thanks for any insight you can offer.
I've heard a "shuffling" type of noise while driving (2012 GTI) and I'm now thinking this might be the issue. But it's just the noise. It doesn't feel like anything is wrong. Should I be also feeling something?
No. If you mean the timing belt then yes you will mess up your pistons if the timing belt let's go. Serpentine just connects the accessories. Your battery won't charge so you won't be able to run the car after battery dies, and ac might not work
I have a 17 Golf 1.8. Clutch assembly making lots of clicking sounds at idle then it gets quiet when you push in the clutch? Can you hear this at idle? Or can you only diag on lift?
i have a mk6 gti dsg 70k miles. i feel a tiny vibration when i am waiting on traffic lights but no weird sounds. when i go on neutral or park it stops. should i be concerned?
Ok 3 jears ago. But i have the same on s3 8l. Started with little vibration. Then after a long ride suddenly lots of engine vibration. Was it your dual mass flywheel?
How does the dual mass flywheel feel when driving? I have a 1.6 TDI and my clutch feels like it has a step when starting in first gear, If I crawl from a stand point I can't feel it, but if I start harder then ir feels like a thump before the clutch fully engages. How can I make sure if it is the clutch or the DMF? Should I try also your test to put the car on the elevator, drive and then brake? Also I can feel a vibration in the chassis at around 130 kmh that I can't find the cause for, I checked tires, discs everything is ok but I can still feel how the car is vibrating
I had a 1.9 TDI and opted to switch out the DM Flywheel with a solid one for a G60 flywheel. I didn't notice a drastic difference but did a little more diesel type clacking in neutral. I liked the clutch engagement better with the G60 flywheel. Not enough to replace it if I didn't need one but If you need to replace the DM it is a good option.

You just made me realize the noise I’m having lol
I have this noise on a S-Tronic TTRS. Does a dsg dmf display the same symptoms?
Neil Kerray Yes.

rough idle
Awesome video my friend!!! Keep it up!
great video.
If a serpentine belt snaps. Is it always gonna fucc up your pistons? Im asking because i wanna change mine to a stronger one. I have a 2.5L btw.

What was a clicking noise before you started to spin the wheels? Was it just gear engagement?
springs in the flywheel broke.
I have the same issue with a golf v tsi 1.4 with single mass
that is the push bearing
Got this sound since 50000km hahaa but it's still running good
You guys wanna do a piston/rod upgrade on my TT? I've got the parts, just need to be installed.... Could make a greeeat video for you....
