These things are a work of art on wheels. I have a 3.2 2004 s-line with 65k miles that is never not a pleasure to drive. If things go wrong you just need to man up, sell your home, and live in the car.
Zoop I have the 2005 s-line 3.2. 120,000 and had it since 14k over 13 years ago. In all that time the only repairs have been a bad brake light switch ( which, oddly, makes it shift weird) and just Recently a new fuel filter, and replacing some wiring a rat chewed.
Paint and plastic have held up better than any car I’ve ever owned despite being parked outdoors. And the 3.2 engine is bulletproof.
Probably gonna have to have the headliner re-done- but the only thing I wish they had thought thru better was that damn LED display in the dash. They only way to fix it is to replace the entire instrument cluster, which is a 1500 dollar part that requires pulling the dash.
@@christopherpardell4418 There are at least 2 repair shops in the United States that will replace the LCD screen for about $250. You have to pull the dash cluster yourself, but they have videos on how to do it. I did my cluster 2 years ago and it works great! Here is one link: www.taninautoelectronix.com/product/2000-2006-audi-tt-instrument-cluster-repair/ the other is in North Carolina, can't find it at the moment. Hope this helps.
Andrew Stinnett that is GREAT info... thanks! Only thing is... TT is my only car- how long I gotta go with the dash yanked? Any idea how hard it is to get the dash out? I’ve never tried it.- ETA never mind- I found the video... dealership made it sound a whopping lot harder than it looks. (Of course)
1) Open up oil cap make sure theres no "mayonaise" under it which would indicate a head gasket leak.
2) Make sure quattro works and doesnt make grinding noise on acceleration or braking
3) Check door windows that they drop a little when you close the doors (if not you need new door locks)
4) Check your lights at night that they light up good, mirrors inside the headlight could be burned up.
5) Check that aircon works and that temperature on the dash goes to middle and stays there.
For number 3 all you do is a simple reset.
ua-cam.com/video/nZLplkjN--8/v-deo.html
The white sludge under the oil cap is usually caused by short trips from the car not getting up to operation temperature often. The oil cooler is another common failure that leads people to assume its the head gasket. If you’re worried your head gasket is bad, get a compression test
PLEASE more vids on MK1 TT
Head to my page for lots of mk1 tt specific content
I appreciate your thoroughness and how you explain what it is you're looking for when it relates to the potential problem. I have learned in 27 minutes more than enough to be a smart and informed buyer. You're truly a Genius. I will definitely watch more of your DIY videos.
Thank you for making this video!!! I'm currently looking for a used MK1 TT here in Germany and this video has been very useful!!
Spot on. I’ve had almost everything you pointed out go wrong. But it keeps chugging at 203k miles - but overall it is a stout vehicle. Just keep up with regular checks and you’ll be fine.
Thank you for making this video. I have been trying to nail down some sounds and issues that you helped me solve in this video. More Mk1 TT videos the better! Still lots of these cars out there. They are fun to drive and comfortable.. also have aged well considering the design never really changed much! Thanks
You have my dream car. I hope one day I can own one.
On this car the Hazard switch is working, more likely the indicator stalk is worn(common) I have 2 spares for my 225BAM! Avoid the water pump with the plastic impellers like the plague, they work lose on the drive shaft and intermittently overheat your motor until the impeller falls off and the motor overheats constantly. In this video, it is more likely a faulty thermostat stuck shut. This is common on the Mk1 TT 225 engine, sometimes the stat sticks open too and the motor never reaches temp (fault P1296 if memory serves me correct) as some garages use cheaper none Audi thermostats. Get a good thermostat that opens at 82 degrees C and you will be fine. Also, use deionized water with the correct antifreeze added or you will end up with the same problem a month or two down the line! Been there with both the overheat and the under heat, fit a good quality thermostat and a pump with a steel impeller! Use a green temperature sensor too. When replacing the thermostat it is wise to buy a new plastic oil dip stick as old ones go brittle and snap, also if replacing the water pump replace the cambelt (do both these at the same time, false economy not to) Then you are set to drive another 40,000miles without issue!
Nice catch. Video on that?
100% ...I suffered all of these when I originally got mine about 10 years back.
I just did huge sends in the snow. Confirmed it worked with a video ahah.
Great video, very helpful. Thanks for taking the time to help people.
A really fantastic video. Love your work; very thorough, and covered pretty much every issue. The only notable omissions I can think of just now, are the heat related impeller issue, and the mini dials needles issue, which is very common in the MK1 dash cluster. Both the needles and the failing dot matrix display are often fixable for relatively cheap monies from a third party. You just have to send it away for a few days (BBA Reman).
Wow. That thing is clean
You will never find such a rust free car here in germany. All the axle and suspension parts on the car in the video do look like new compared the the rusty parts here in mid-europe.
Great video. Do one for the V8 S4, it will be 3 hours long
*cough* timing chain
Aint nobody got time for that!
Thanks man . I just bought a 04 225hp.
This was good information. I’ll be checking for those issues down the road
On the turn signals / hazard switch, the relay inside the hazard switch unit sticks for the turn signals. You can try & give a finger thump onto the hazard switch to see if that knocks it loose. Does not solve the problem, but may unstick the relay. Did that on our 06 TT MK1 until the replacement arrived. There are also some videos I have seen where they have opened up the switch & replaced the worn faulty relay.
Thank You for the check list. Just purchased one with front suspension wobble and noise, had to replace the cam sensor "easy" but now I know how to check it. Thanks
Got to admit I don't know who Nathan is but I like his car and I like that I goes to things called Wookies in the woods.
-I have a mk1 225hp roadster thanks for the awesome video today it seems like many of the people buying these cars are learning to work on themselves. And to be honest if I die in a fast car it's because I wanted to be properly tuned and torqued not because I did something wrong with my repairs
How do you look for a,225hp one there title isn't different ?
these inspection videos are awesome, i hope you make a bunch of them
Excellent video, thank you
Having one of these, I am scared to watch this video
Tray Muse me too lol
Same but at least mine has half the miles
😂 lol
I owned a 2003 225hp quattro. I agree with the sentiment... my fuel gauge never worked right, some sort of drivetrain component kept howling and the check engine light never turned off. Lots that can happen with these cars but I feel like if you keep up with the maintenance and fixes it's an awesome car.
Will Mercier i feel the check engine light could just be shoddy electronics but who knows
Really good explanations of stuff. A must watch for anyone considering that car.
Cameraman job has some perks I see!
There are 4 codes and only 2 problems. 1)Vacuum leak throwing the mixture to the "lean side" thus, causing problem number 2) ECU having to add fuel. 3)Every time you have a vacuum leak you will get a ECM desabled code. That wraps up the first issue. The second one is just an O2 sensor taking too long to heat "went bad"....therefore it takes too long to send stoich measurements to the ECU......throwing a ECM desabled code.....and bla bla bla bla
Great Video. Thanks for taking the time to put it up. Great!
Thank you very much for the video. I'm going to look at one of these cars tomorrow :)
So the DV can throw a secondary air code then? Does that happen to 225s as well?
Great work congrats
Nice video. I could spend a fortune there.
I hate seeing headlights like that with cloudy lenses.
So easy to remedy.
whats the remedy ?
Usually both pads will have the same wear. If not the sliding bolts are worn or stuck. On the ate system with rubber bushings for the sliding bolts this rarely happens but on bosch systems(mercedes fronts) it may happen. Also a frozen piston would not release enough the pad so more inside wear.
Great video thank you for this, do you have an idea of how much it would cost to fix all of this? ( parts and work)
Thank you !
It's crazy to me how my 1999 b5 Passat had an all aluminum 4 link front suspension, and this car has a steel lower control arm and a strut based system. I'm pretty sure this car was significantly more expensive than a Passat.
Aluminium is lighter, but steel has a very variable set of extreme strength related properties that can be honed to the application. As mentioned, this is a pretty well designed/tested sports vehicle. The reason it's still loved and sought after, is that it has fantastic driving characteristics.
Even last year, I drove a brand new S5... And it was a lovely car, but two weeks later, I drove my medium health MK1 225 Quattro TT, and it felt like riding a razor blade... The feel of cutting up the road, is hard to beat in anything short of a high-end sports car (or decently modified cheaper coupe).
Your Passat was essentially a lengthened B5 Audi A4, every other Generation of Passat has the same setup as this TT.
Why are these stupid aftermarket air filters put on? If the Audi engineers wanted these they would have done it, FYI they're sucking hot air from the engine bay which doesn't combust properly, The original air box flows air from the outside of the engine thus being cooler air for better combustion.
next video idea... Mazda Rx 8 love that car. fun to drive expensive to maintain
Heb betere filmpjes gezien. Daar zag je echt wat hij deed. Dit ging meer om de maker😜
2004 audi 59000 MLS, the car seems to have a transmission problem, tell me what to look for? Does the car still drive?
Recently bought a 02 Audi TT 1.8.. reset battery and my fob key buttons stopped working.. is there anyway to resync without 2 keys?? Only have 1. Thank you
Also any vacuum and pvc hose replacement kits recommended??
try to lock and unlock it with the key on the door lock, engine on and off and it should fix itself.
just bought mine its a 2001 and im having some electrical problems my blinkers only work when they want usually not at all but my hazards work fine. fuses are fine checked them first. what would you say would be a cause of this?
It's definitely the hazard switch. They all have this problem. On mine sometime hitting the hazard switch on and off a few times would correct it and it would work for a little while but it's worth it to just replace it. Like he said in the video you slide the radio out of the dash if it's a stock radio you'll need the tool to plug into each side to unlock the clips but once it's out you can reach right up to the hazard switch. That power distribution box on top of the battery that he showed in the video is another thing to check regularly they are prone to catch on fire if you don't notice the fuses melting over time. Also these had a bunch of problems with the gauge cluster on the dash not just the led screen but also gauges not working. Lucky for me just my fuel gauge is off by half a tank but for others the tach or even speedo stop working and it's expensive to buy another cluster that will just mess up as well. There used to be a place that would fix the issue if you sent them the gauge cluster but can't remember the name. I also have problems with the windows acting up when I roll them up and down my dome light working intermittently and did have camber issues in the rear until I bought adjustable rear tie bars. The slave cylinder went on mine as well and you have to remove the tranny to replace it and it's made out of cheap plastic I found out but I replaced the clutch flywheel and pressure plate while I had it out. Did my timing belt as well and added a water pump with a metal impeller because I heard the stock plastic ones are crap as well. All in all this car has been a money pit to make reliable and it's a love hate relationship for sure. Audi should have recalled many things on these model years but failed to take any responsibility for the chronic malfunctions of the TT.
Did you watch the whole vid he said the hazzard button
I'd say the indicator stalk itself
Good Video.
On my 2002 tt it was the load reduction relay that failed causing the turn signals not to work.
Hey guys I have a problem with my Mk 1 TT. The rear differential is always on and the rear tires are always squeeking while I do manouvers in low speed (while I'm parking my car for example) I have already changed the haldex drive and chenged the haldex oil, but it's still not working properly.
Someone put the wrong oil in the haldex. Flush it and refill TWICE. Second time replace the haldex filter as well.
I'm mostly likely going to pick up a 2002 TT in a few days. After watching this, I'm a little intimidated, as I've never owned or worked on a 1.8T.
Paul, do you offer inspection services like this at your shop? Or is this for video purposes only?
What would be causing a new battery to completely drain within 3 days if parked? Alternator test and it came out fine, google doesn’t really help. Maybe the radio? I had to jump the car and when it got power the radio started blaring even though it was switched off.
Same thing just happened to my TT did you find out what the cause of the drain is?
Wiring harness? Everything is not hooked up properly short in the eletrical system and possibly fryed your radio idk
If you’ve not sorted this yet I reckon it’s the alarm siren it has rechargeable batteries so if thy are bad which by the age of these now they will be they simply won’t take a charge so the main battery will constantly be trying to charge the alarm battery hence you car battery being flat within 3 days. My mk5 golf had same issue I replaced the alarm siren with a newer version and all is fine again. I purchased my TT 2 weeks ago and disconnected alarm straight away as knew this would be an issue and only using the car as a second car.
I wish you showed where the actual ODB 2 is and how to access it
Is this engine chain driven? I am assuming so, since the chain tensioner seal was leaking? but you also checked the timing belt?
do these engines have both a timing belt and timing chain?
Yes
The crank drives the exhaust cam with a toothed belt. The exhaust cam drives the inlet cam with a chain.
Isn’t this inspection for every car!
Just turn the ignition 👍
What did you do about the codes you pulled with the obdeleven tool
710N is the upgraded DV, also has nothing to do with the SAIP system.
My 2002 MK1 225 TT has the following issues:
1) neither cooling fan turns on at or above 90 deg C.
2) the steering locks when I am reversing out of a car park and it’s concerning. The same thing happens when I’m driving forward and turning sharply at low speed.
Potential causes and solutions?
Cameron
Break the steering lock. It won’t work again but much safer to drive. Put it on lock and get two of you to turn the wheel until it clicks and releases. Bingo no steering lock but safer car,,👍
Hey bro, i have an audi A4 2009. for some reason the coolant tank is dropping coolant and i get a message saying to turn off the car and check Coolant level. at first i thought i was missing coolant but the issue was that it overheats and coolant starts getting spilled. i removed the tank and cleaned it and topped it off again but i keep getting the message to turn opff the car and check coolant. im fukn pissed off right now. any suggestions or how much it will cost to fix ? ... im getting ready to turn it in for a tesla instead.
top!!!!!my audi tt mk1 nardo grey:
@
why does no one mention the tt with additional tuning to 240 bhp
The fuze box above the battery does burn out the same way as other mk4 cars.
I got this fixed :) Searched a lot for a solution and finally had my mechanic do a direct heavy gauge wire run to the alternator :) No more problems with burning up the fuse box :) I went through two before I found out this mod.
Hey i love that video my wife love these car and planig an getting one i would love to talk to you in person some more on this car please thank you how can i get in touch with you other from this.
Actually I have a 180, and i have the intercooler bar.
Can I have you look at mine to troubleshoot before issues show up?

PLEAAASE some vids with A6 C6f4 Quattro manual gearbox 2.4 V6 &177 hp🚘❗❗❗
SUPEEEER AWESOOOOME CHANEL , KEEP DOING IT ...⚠️⚠️⚠️
IT CAN TELL FROM TEN MILES THAT YOU ARE A REAL 🥇PRO👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
16:02 that rubbing on the hood is not good. Hood is aluminum tho. I live in Nova Scotia but don't drive my TT in Winter.
Bonito Carro
It’s OBD II ........... not OBD 11. The fuse box inside car also has some electrical gremlins. You never checked that.
That is an OBDEleven tool. It's a scanner that uses the OBD II connection, but can show some additional information and change some settings in Volkswagen automotive group vehicles. So it's an OBDEleven in an OBD II port.
Walk up to vehicle ... look at front grille or trunk closely.... if there are 4 rings on either it will be problematic unfortunately
haldex service diy Pleaseeeee
If you want less HP, just let your engine suck hot air like here.
My esp light is on continuously on and will not turn off from the switch. There's no codes showing on the diagnostic. Any ideas how I can fix this annoying issue please.
Things I've already looked into-
I've cleaned the MAF sensor
Replaced the Yaw rate sensor and lateral acceleration sensor. I've installed new spark plugs, checked throttle body, which is also working fine, inflated my tires checked oil level... The only thing I can think of maybe brake switch sensor, but it seems to be working fine... if you have any further helping tips onthis I'd really appreciate your time and advise on this matter. Thanks
90nadz on my car mice had destroyed wiring around the engine management computer under the cowlings, it messed up the esp, all wheel drive, and caused a phantom electrical discharge. Maddening!!
meh I just bought a 2000 MK1 1.8 with 64,000 on it I expect I'll replace the timing belt at 75 but I'm not too worried
sooner than later man
How many 3.2 where made
nothing about haldex?
If You did that for an 8J.
No need to sand headlines you can buy a bottle of stuff and makes them like new
OOORRRR....Take it to a qualified mechanic that know what they are looking for.
"How to check an Audi for problems"
1. Identify that it's an Audi
2. conclude that it has problems and design defects
OBD eleven. LMAO
Mines fucked rn
Air cone doesn't reach fresh air hole in the wing total garbage
