    I really appreciate the fact that Aaron explains this took him 12 weeks to do. I used to have to deal with many clients expecting 5 minutes of animation in a month, with a budget that could only afford one person.

      I've found many people are ignorant about just how long it takes to make an animation, but I don't really blame them. Even today the entire process of what makes an animation isn't so well known. I'm glad Dreams will make animation much more intuitive and accessible for everyone.

      @@ajaymeena-xt8fi it really depends what quality you are looking at. A Disney feature film from the 90s had around 300 people over a period of your put together a feature that was around 70-80 minutes long.
      Even with technological improvements, the speed and manpower needed to make a feature film hasn’t changed much. Films just look better.

      Right? I've really enjoyed making little animations on Procreate, but it's incredibly time consuming, and any time I've made anything remotely complex, I've had to work over multiple files otherwise I kept bumping into layer limits. I am SO excited about dreams, I think it's gonna be a game changer, and keep everything I enjoy about animating while making the whole thing so much easier.

    i completely agree with him- there’s going to be a resurgence of 2D when the tools to make it become more efficient, and i’m glad. 3D stuff has gotten so lifeless and boring. that might be the fault of the pressure on studios to quick churn but everything’s so rigid

    • @notimeforcreativenamesjust3034
      @notimeforcreativenamesjust3034 8 місяців тому +12

      I wouldn’t say that 3D’s getting stale. It’s starting to get a lot more experimental now. Shit like the new TMNT movie, the netflix shows Intergalactic and Arcane, obviously spider-verse, and puss and boots 2. Things are getting really exciting for 3D.

    • @drawingwithcal1552
      @drawingwithcal1552 8 місяців тому +2

      @@notimeforcreativenamesjust3034 yeah i think there are a definitely a few projects that are pushing the envelope and hopefully we see more of it, but i think the direction of where it’s going is not the same as 2D- the charming characteristics of 2D is centered around the inaccuracies and sheer flexibility of the format. if 3D were to achieve that same level of flexibility it’s extremely difficult cuz by default 3D starts at accuracy. and if you take the examples of spiderverse, tmnt, arcane- they’re trying to be more fluid and more flexible but not to the degree of where 2D has taken it- they’re really more pushing it to be more like real life. and animations like spiderverse, tmnt, they’re actually more so imitating claymation. in fact, the few scenes that we saw in spiderverse that was “like” 2D animation or comic book freeze frame, was actually hand drawn 2D. and these handful of movies and shows that use specialized methods it does take more time and resources- it’s not easy and studios worry a lot about time and budget constraints. did you see paw patrol the movie? there are hundreds more animations that do what paw patrol does- spend as little as possible on the actual animation, use the typical systems in place- and spend most of the money on the star talent for voice. and if we're talking about series- oh there's millions globally that use the same dry method cuz its cheaper to produce, there's new shows coming out every day. but regardless, it'd be very difficult and expensive for 3D to try and do what 2D can, and what i mean specifically, like look up steamboat willie or steamroller mickey. for the longest time, 2D's not accurate to life at all, it goes way beyond it, the level of flexibility is insane its like watching a dream. and its 2023, why is this old stuff still so captivating? but that's why i'm glad there are companies that are focused on traditional animation, using today's tech to make the process easier. cuz 3D is evolving but it's not necessarily evolving to encompass 2D, and that's fine. all i know is when i flip on netflix or disney, sit down with the kids, i wanna start seeing more hand-drawn traditional stuff and tools like this will make it possible. i'm so tired of "flash animation" cutouts and dry 3D clones

    • @ani-ma-tion5326
      @ani-ma-tion5326 8 місяців тому +2

      I wouldn’t say it’s 3D that’s boring, it’s the company and people who produce it. Arcane and Puss in Boots TLW Is a great example of gorgeous fluid 3D work.

    This interview is precious and I think all animators should record his answer that 1min 40s animation took him 12 weeks! And he is one of the major Pros. So when a client comes and ask you a 3 to 5 minutes animation in a month or worst in a week, with this type of quality, just send them this video. Sadly in the freelance work I’ve found so many irrational people that on top of unrealistic time-quality expectations they want to pay less than $500 for it. That aside, I can’t wait for Procreate dreams

    Only 12 weeks is genuinely insane...! I can't wait to see all I can do when it comes out. I have TVPaint but still just animate a lot in normal Procreate just because... it's just better and smoother. I've got a simple plan on how I'll be able to even get back to animating on paper. Animating on paper, checking the motion by taking a pic frame by frame (and setting up a camera hooked to Dragonframe to do so) and then, eventually finishing the animation and putting it all into TVPaint to finish it? So many hoops to jump through. I feel Procreate Dreams, even with animating on paper, will open up everything. Just set up the iPad and take a pic of each frame and it's already in the timeline and can be seen and then also brought into a finished product (like coloring if you set the animation layer to a blending mode so only the lines remain), all that, though, is if Dreams has the same capabilities as normal Procreate, which I imagine they do. If not, well, I'll just animate on the iPad directly like I tend to do anyways. It's just that i really love physical media when I can. Anyways... I CAN'T WAIT!! Been counting down the days and weeks

    I really love this take on AI. I do some personal illustration work as a hobby (but emotionally invest into it a lot), and this "I want to do it myself!" really hit home. I tried cutting corners by using 3D models and such in the past, but it felt like the process misses some crucial part. This talk makes me realize that what exactly I felt missing was my own touch, which personally for me turns out to be important to see in my creations. Not against the technology per se (it can help a lot when used as a tool rather than full substitute of human work), but for deeply personal character artworks I think I want to deliberately stick with the old-school way.

      This is similar to a person wanting to learn to bake pies. Someone can ask them, "Why not just buy a factory made pie instead?" and the person can say "I want to make it!"
      There's just something so human about wanting to get down and get our hands occupied and learn a new skill, simply out of the love of the process. Trying, failing, succeeding, learning, growing, all of that makes us human. We enjoy the process. The moment you can simply press a button and have a robot bake you a pie, or a computer generate an image for you, it loses that special connection that you had with it. It just becomes another object to be discarded.

    I think AI could be very helpful with tweening where you describe in text prompts or use reference animations to dial in or experiment with the feel you’re looking for and the app proposes future key frames that you could easily regenerate. Same thing with coloring. AI could very much help with mundane, repetitive tasks rather than raw creative ideation.

      Inbetweening in the traditional sense has been pretty much gone as a job for decades. Production level animation in 3D and now even 2d is mostly puppet based, and computers automatically calculate the inbetweens now. The only human interference now is of a frame needs to be broken and adjusted. Introducing prompts into this would actually make things slower and cumbersome.
      If you want that hand drawn imperfection you either add some line warble to the above method or just animate frame by frame like it’s 1952.

      Ai would be unethical , because of the data base set that is based on stolen work. Procreate doesn't want to hurt artists, unlike adobe. Who doesn't care about artists at all, they just want to make money while profiting off the backs of artists.
