- Our fighter jet came in a box from Estonia with 9 days to get it ready for Oshkosh. We made it there, but now we have to make it home -- 1300 miles with no autopilot, weather, icing, diverts, and spatial disorientation! L-39 Assembly Part 9.

Great Job Mat. Keep up the great videos. I truly enjoy your content. It's always a treat.
Thank you very much.
Keep up the great content!
Asking about wheel chocks after you're strapped in and starting engines... classic. I thought the reply to the question was going to be, "we'll soon find out"! Thanks for the awesome video.
Nice to see/hear the shakedown to more organized operation of this beast. Looks like cross country is pretty high workload even for two pilots.
Love the new content with the L-39. Seems like pretty high workload even with two pilots, with limited avionics.
Thanks-- back in the day i made that approach many a time….brought back some good ole memories!👍👍 how awful to think you can’t get your L 39 into your hanger….we should all have such concerns!
I'm not a jet fan, much, but I'm pretty sure I saw you land N367HP at KDUB yesterday (1/19/23) and passed you guys heading out in the courtesy car. 😆
Brilliant again guys.
really cool aircraft!
Love your vids!
I own and fly at plane at U42 and never even heard of you guys flying into there!? That’s cool though love the video!
Can you run through the GoPro installation? Is there power out to them and custom mounts using the wing rivets etc??
Great sunset!
Nice having a RIO back there calling out all the traffic
Yeah that can really come in handy eh? I want one. Especially in suboptimal conditions in a jet with old school avionics. Kind of like flying a learjet, fast and need 2 pilots for max safety
Does the manual/tech order include most efficient climb profiles?
This brings back fond memories. :)
Like those jet moments...
I'm so jealous 😫!
Never this early. Nice vid
Why am I seeing the runway centerline on your left side ? Was that a formation landing ?
A few years ago I noticed an abandoned or underused Aero Commander 680FL in Estonia (UA-cam). Maybe you guys could salvage. We do not have the kind of spirit in the Baltic region.
Nice to see my house while you were on final at South Valley. I just wish I was out walking the dog to catch your bird in real life!
No doubt about it 👍
Looks like you need a little Pledge furniture polish on the canopy there.
The Cold War is over, you can land the bird wherever you like.
Just stay away from the Aleutians
The cold war is over? Have you read a newspaper lately?
New Cold War, same as the old Cold War.
dude at the beginning you sound exactly like jim from the office haha
No centerline discipline drives me nuts
I've noticed the green WING TIP TANKS lamp. Doesn't it work that when you see the light you should switch wing tip CB off, because it indicates empty tank? At least in normal L-39 it is described in that way.
It will initially be intermittent, so have to wait for a steady light to know they’re really empty
@@mattguthmiller did you hear about the recent crash of the Beechcraft A36 in Westchester County, NY?
It seems he took off from JFK in thunderstorms and experienced engine trouble and then failure, and crashed in trees a mile or so short of the Westchester County airport.
I'm wondering whether it is prudent to fly a single engine in those weather conditions, at night. It seems he was fine initially, but there was no safety margin for when the engine failed.
I'm not a pilot. What is your opinion about the scenario?
Matt u r possessed
I hate it when I can't get all my planes into my hangar.
It's a nice problem to have though.😊
Hey, did you get it in the hangar?
Bonanza to Jetting around? I guess my nap was a lot longer than I thought?
hey matt just wondering where your home base is i see you flying in to new Mexico a lot and was just curious
He tells you in the video more than once. Alpine Airpark.
So jealous would be fun
You should have checked if they chocked you before you saddled up😜
You need a BAC strkemaster next
Four reds on VASI? From long final.
Does the ejection seat work? I pray that you never have to use it!
Early videos showed them go through figuring out parachute rigging, so I'm guessing no.
Propose upgrades: full forward and rear cockpit garminized with GFC500 or GFC600 autopilot, TFE-731-4 engine conversion (4050lbs thrust). Western style stick grips.
How many Sidewinders will fit on a wing?
I like the version Matt has with the drop tanks and if not mistaken, larger version drop tanks exist. I definetely would go for an Engine conversion and if possible a RVSM to go into the upper flight levels and have less fuel burn. The TFE731-4 has thrust up to 4050 or even a tad more. Limit with the L-39's Intakes is, according a modifier, 4250lbs of thrust. DEEC controlled, NO APU, NO RAT, 4 sec idle to max thrust spool time. Even at max thrust most IVCHENKO do not give the rated 3750lbs. The TFE731 is an excellent substitute. Cheaper than FADEC FJ44. ALTHOUGH AERO VODOCHODY offers its L39CW conversion program too. what I would wish for is a brake conversion from stick to pedal operated like the ALCA L-159 HYDRAULIC system.
Add full WHELEN ORION LED EXT lights...
😊
@@didierdebaere7193 You sound like you know what you're talking about. Those would be my upgrades too! Not sure how feasible RVSM would be in that thing.
Been watching your videos the last few days. Do you have a call sign? Maybe SQUARE, VELCRO, BLACK , cause of the black velco patch on the top of your helmet>>>>>
4 red on landing?
Newb question: Why don’t you taxi/land on centerline?
Becauee its a jet. Its cool.
Sometimes there are imbedded lights on the centerline which are a bit bumpy. Especially a problem with a castering (free moving) front wheel.
Thanks to both of you! Both answers make good sense! :-)
No reason. Any pilot may land but professional pilot's land where they say they will land. But I am no professional
Think Matt and the CO both need Callsigns....
yeah. dipfrick and nincompoop
Do you warn co-pilot before the snap-rolls? 😂😂😂...
Pebble rock river
Are there any limitations on which airports you can fly into due to it being an “experimental” aircraft? Like not into populated areas or can you pretty much go anywhere?
No Class B primary airports
You have an AOA on that thing ?
Nope
Why the jump suits? I would be rocking the jeans and a white Tee, aviators and what ever else Tom Cruise wore while on Top Gun haha
nomex fireproof suit. keep some of your skin in a fire
Because ejecting in jeans and a white Tee wouldnt be the most comfortable thing to do.
im im flying a warbird im 100% buying my self a jumpsuit. Gotta keep the tradition going
Anyone else hearing atc saying Russian, when they say roger?..
Lol
Where is the Beech 36.
deflate the tyres, Matt, i mean tires
That jet is made for combat moves...lets see some Matt.....it's not a VW Passat to go on family picnics! PS...for unmanned fields, lets ask a question in communications instead of stating a position...its safer to avoid collisions!
Hangar too low ceiling it seems.
Another upgrade: RVSM capability, TCAS.
Sadly RVSM is not possible with the FAAs restrictions. I agree it would really help the range!
You need to put more gas tanks on that plane.
There is a larger drop tank that could be fitted adds about 80 gal total but increases drag.
Was that roll just to get your nose down?
his neighbor watching him put a fricking jet in his hangar😧
It's Alpine. Lots of jets in hangars there, believe it or not. I don't know how many ex-military ones, but for sure bizjet types.
When do we get to see Matt do the Cobra maneuver?
Wow, was Matt really showing 4 reds on the VASI coming into SLC? Is that normal for the L39, or was Matt not perfect on his approach for the first time...ever? ;-)
Exactly where we wanted to be, not trying to touch down 1000ft down the runway
Not every aircraft can fly the VASI, or should..
@@mattguthmiller At some airports it's required to fly the visual slope indicator for obstacle clearance. Also I don't think flying a flat approach helps to shorten the landing run. Basically a flat approach means almost all your velocity is in the horizontal vector and you carry that at touchdown. When you have more of your velocity in the horizontal vector, that velocity is eliminated by the flare and by the landing gear. Here's a video of a Citation flying a 6 degree glide path and putting it down right where they want it: ua-cam.com/video/VC4iVwP95pE/v-deo.html
@@igclapp come do some jet transition training sometime and you’ll understand pretty quickly why that doesn’t work here
How dare you question Matt…
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Are you wearing G shock pressure pants when flying this jet, or just a flight suit?
🌏🇭🇲
I wonder how much a private air to air refuel would cost if they would even allow it, let alone if this jet was ever capable of refueling in the air
Google Omega tanker...
If you have to ask you can't afford it. 🤣
@@terryboyer1342 I know the price but still cant afford it
@@johntaylor6300 I can't afford to know the price.
Watch Firefox (Clint Eastwood Russian jet movie), then try some Russian while flying. Come on. :)
It's not enough to merely speak Russian... you must THINK in Russian.
@@hxhdfjifzirstc894 Good memory!
Does it have rear facing missiles?
might want more sterile cockpit but good vid
“2 knots slow”
Yeah I think the flying and communication in this flight is a little bit.. amateurstyle. They try to operate the jet as a two man crew but don’t really seem to understand MCC concepts. All the best for you guys.
It had to be said. And certainly work on the CRM if you are operating two crew otherwise watch the chatter. But love the jet. Will look at one in the future
It sounded like all business talk and good CRM to me. Especially the person-draulic TCAS in the back seat pointing out traffic on IFR approach. What not to like?
*VFR not IFR, obviously 😪
How do you afford to fly this around?
Start a successful business and do what you really want to do, in life.
@@hxhdfjifzirstc894 Sure. Simple. A snap.
@@hxhdfjifzirstc894 Yep. I think YT is paying for this jet though (if only partially). Good move, otherwise I doubt he'd be doing it as a hobby
Did Matt by the jet or who did? I'm still confused on this.
Yes he byed the jet
@@av8or971 byed? pardon me : 0
Yes Mat byed the jet
live could be worse than this!
Interesting that the mask is so much louder than the comms.
Can you post some helmet footage/chest footage? No offense but we’d rather look from your point of view than look at you the whole video 💀
This is so good. Let's be honest. Previously, this channel was more about junk food than anything else. Now, it's really taking off (if you'll pardon the expression).
No visible checklists, no runway length calculations, no discernible flight planning. It's like watching an accident report in low motion...
Generally the flight planning and runway calculations are done before flight
@@mattguthmiller Hard to tell that from comments wondering if the runway is long enough. Anyway, good luck.
Really difficult to hear everything you guys are saying in the jet. Shame...
Great vid otherwise 👍🏻😀🇬🇧
"We'll cancel IFR..." five seconds later "we have 50min of fuel onboard and 7min to the airport"... so you didn't have IFR fuel mins when you filed and flew your IFR flight plan?
There can be a difference with planned and expected. Kinda the point of the minimum don't ya think?
The bigger difference though is that "50 minutes" meant 50 minutes down low, not in cruise
How does Matt afford all this? Trust fund kid?
Teenage software business founder and eventual MIT grad. You can fill in the rest...
Ladies and gentlemen, prime example of what not to do!!! Flying below the glide slope is never a good idea. “Four red, you’re dead.” What ever the comments say, stay on the glide dope. I DO NOT CARE what anyone says in the comments. Fly the MF glide slope. Done become a statistic.
A tad hyperbole-ic there Devin? With two good engines and proper energy management and hyper attention to the terrain, you can, in fact, fly a shallow app with 4 red and guess what, not die! Just as this guy did. Granted, it's not generally accepted practice and it can get you in trouble, but it can be done.
@@lbowsk One engine, in this case, just FYI.
really hate the breathing sounds in the video, muted it and turned on cc
💀
alt + f4 will solve your sound problem.
I think his VOX switch isn't adjusted properly, if it's clicking on for heavy breathing.
vlad I know. People breathing really annoys me. So rude! 😠
You can land an L39 anywhere, once😀
As a pilot, I should enjoy these videos, but I don't. Cant work out why. Maybe it is the spoiled rich kid vibe? Not sure.
I feel like filming and editing UA-cam videos is far more work than you would imagine. I personally don’t think I could do that much work and still enjoy it as a hobby.
Why so jealous ? The fact that in this country it is possible to have the opportunity to be financially successful enough to pursue such fun flying pursuits is great ! Go for it ! Pursue and enjoy the pursuit !
In other words, every person should live in poverty, LOLOLOL. Maybe if you were a better pilot, you could afford a jet.
I think Guttmueller made some money as a young man who developed a business. I’m not positive about this, but you might check him out. If true, I think it takes him out of the spoiled rich kid category.
Sorry if I have missed this but what's the endurance on this?
