And also people who think they seen a miracle could be as a result of neurological dysfunction e.g. hearing and seeing voices that only exists in their own mind. And also actively believing in something e.g. ghosts, can wire your brain into seeing ghosts during your lifetime. So anything that goes against the laws of nature is experiences only occurred in the mind, but doesn't exist in the external world.
@@PhilosophyVibe I have an exam question as part of my Philosophy and Christianity paper. Miracles is coming up (we got told the questions due to Corona Virus). Again, this video has been fantastic.
People use word "miracle" in many different senses. For instance, creationists argue that universe couldnt came from nothing. They find it absurd, unbelievable, something against nature, and the way i see it, it could be labeled "miracle" as well.
@@eeroraute281 No, because that which those people believe about universe has nothing to do with these two labels. If we talk about LABELS, atheism is not about belief in science and theism is not about belief in bible and people are irrelevant. If we talk about PEOPLE, they believe various things and labels are irrelevant. But talking about both, mixing labels and people, that is very misleading. And that is not good, man...
Yeah, but that's just semantics. We both know what he's talking about. Maybe there are miracles, by definition they are supernatural, and thus an exception to the rule! And you just gotta roll with it....
@@Joeyjojoshabbadoo Yes, i agree - maybe there are miracles, although they are exceptions to the rule. Or there are no miracles and no exceptions. Could be one way or the other.
Why eating animals is morally wrong then; according to you? Where do you think morality or ethics come from? Is reason a source of morality or ethics? No way. Is the separation between ethics & the rest a sound "decision"?, like between politics & ethics, ethics & religion, ethics & economics..... Was Hume right in separating between fact & value???? Those lethal separations represented *the last nails on the coffin of* *modernity.*
The issue is, "how do you believe." The problem of miracles is that they do not include the criteria for which reasonable belief may be given. The outlandish need not be a miracle, it can simply be the unreasonable. If you over eat for two weeks you would not believe you should lose weight, and if you do lose weight it is not a miracle.
I am not sure, usually UA-cam fixes this automatically but hasn't done so on this video. I need to look into this so it doesn't happen on any future videos.
Just want to throw a wrench into this argument: according to the Bible and some of the Church Fathers, for example, Hume's definition of a miracle is not the agreed definition. Hume's definition came LONG after the accepted definitions of the aforementioned parties. With that being said, a miracle may be natural or supernatural. It merely relies on a supernatural entity who orchestrates the event.
6:20 an insertion of a completely bs review of quantum physics. The laws of QFT are MORE consistent than the generally inaccurate laws of Newton that we take for granted as strict.
3:19 miracles do happen to religious adherence of all types, as well as agnostics, and even atheists from all over the world in every single culture. In fact, in terms of mass, witnessing of miracles, this is not uncommon. Just look into the deities that have been witnessed, hovering over buildings, such as the people of the Hindu faith and the people of the Christian faith, as well as others have witnessed in massive numbers. not all religions claim to be the only one and your question regarding how can all religions be true, that’s really not the topic. People experience miracles, regardless of religious affiliation.
Not to mention, hundreds or even thousands of times documented where a mother will lift a car off of a child, for instance. I’m really not sure whether that should be regarded as a miracle or not because the laws of nature… Well, I it might be a rare occurrence, but it happens that the body gains superhuman strength. It happens. It happens.
I think its a false assumption that God occur miracles to correct his mistakes, since he could create laws of nature in a way that he never need to break them. The traditional Islamic explanation of why God occur miracles is that, God want to guide some people to his way by showing them a miracle. Many people have guided to religion by witnessing miracles, if God created natural laws in a way that he don't need to break them, then guiding people by showing miracles wouldn't happen.
Life in itself is a miracle- my heart pump hundreds of litres of blood a day, my brain can store trillions of GB of data, I can discern between sounds and process them separately, my DNA is so compact it can be lengthened to the moon and back. To me that’s all is a miracle
Indeed. Sounds like Hume was metaphysically stupid. Say, if i can make rules, i can also break or cancel suspend violate....them whenever i feel like it, why then did Hume think that the almighty God cannot break or suspend....His own laws of nature or physics???? Too much philo makes people stupid, i guess.
@@SurgeonSuhailAnwar as long as someone is using "to me" they can't attach their opinion to truth, hence no point to say it; No matter which category they fall in or how much their group is populated.
If god is everything or at least in charge of everything, lets say except for human choices, then he is the law of nature, isn't he? So in that sense every natural phenomena is a miracle and also what would seem to be a deviance from the law of nature is still part of the law of nature. When i was learning in a religious school many of the rabbi's chose to explain miracles as explainable by science but part of the divine plan. On the other hand, scientifically you can't observe miracles, lets say that man is miraculously cured from a terminal disease , from scientific perspective its just something that can't be explained *yet* no and in no way, an explanation that higher power caused it will be accepted
Impacting quantum fields would to us appear a violation of the natural laws, but what we deem to be natural is only a construct of quantum mechanics. As such a miracle would not break the laws of nature, they are only adjusting nature. This channel has a bias and does not understand science not theology.

Looks like you are still in 1st std of philosophy. You have to read a lot many philosopers to understand miracles; especially Theistic philosopers.
