You influenced my first trek into bolt. And i had grabbed a new rugger american gen2. Same quality rifle as this. And bam. Its like your watching me. I fugging love that
This is a great little series, I seen ultimate reloader had one he was trying to solve accuracy issues on and built a custom rifle rather than troubleshoot.
I used .020 inch shim stock put a hole in it for mounting screws . Didn’t have to sand stock . Raised assembly from the stock works fine . 1974 Model 700 ADL 3006 .very accurate . Kicks like a mule put limb saver over shoulder pad ,calmed kick down a lot . Things that work
My 1st rifle was purchased in the early 90’s, MSLA mt Gun show. Savage 110 in 300 win mag nib, bushnell 3x9 came on it, 250$. Still have it, different scope now.I’ll follow along and proof it after all this time
Pretty cool. I was a kid when first took interest in long range shooting. Varmint hunting barrel burners and long range shots on coyotes took me down the path. I remember when the Tango 51 was the "best basic" rig you could buy off the shelf. This stuff this feller is doing is what a lot of us did to Stevens and Savage actions for cheap. Some handier guys would reinforce the cheap stocks with fiberglass and occasionally rod stock. It was all forum based information back then. Kinda neat to see a dude passing down the knowledge in video form now. Wait'll he gets into the reloading portion lmao. Kidding.
Great video Overton. I'm currently putting together my first long range~ish rifle. It's a 308 Remington 700 with a very nice wood stock. The wood stock is touching the barrel though. This sanding method is genius and way better than sanding the stock separately, which is what I was going to do before watching this video. Thank you good sir for showing me the way.
in the event that barrel contact cannot be avoided( some guns, stocks or other parts have to touch the barrel because that's how they were designed decades ago) contact should be constant and consistent, NO WEEBLE WOBBLY. You should be mindful of touching or applying pressure to the barrel, or to parts that are touching the barrel, when shooting. Keep whatever contact or pressure has to be there consistent in the amount and location. Ex: stock mounts straight to barrel, resting the forestock on a bag with gravity only in the exact same location on the forestock every time. If this is your situation, you can go down a rabbit hole learning about stock pressure and stock fit and heat expansion and barrel shimming and so on... it's a whole topic, mostly of a historical note. Regardless, if you can't free float for whatever reason, all of the above apply, no matter how deep you go with it.
This is some of my favorite content youve ever done man! Keep up the good work, thinking i might have to become a member, its super refreshing to get ELR knowledge on youtube from someone relatable.
You know, i might need to do this with my Ruger. Im fairly sure i noticed the barrel touching the the stock both before and after removing the action so i could paint the stock. Thought it was intentional, but hey that means i learned something here.
You might want to mention that wind matters at 100yrds if you're playing the precision game and need a legit, no BS, dead nuts on, true zero.... Don't believe me? Plug in whatever you're running into your favorite ballistics app, add a 5 mph cross wind and see what it does at 100. Bet its more than 0.25" at 100.... If it's a man size target, it doesn't matter much. If you want to shoot tiny groups and/or need a no BS zero, it matters.
Garmin chronograph has been a game changer. I’d add proper parallax adjustment is critical when zeroing at short range and high magnification. That knob on the left of the scope is not a focus knob, it’s parallax adjustment, use it accordingly.
@@OvertonWindex it’s just an area I’ve seen people chase their zero thinking something is wrong with the rifle, meanwhile it’s a result of them setting their “focus” knob to the range they were zeroing at. I know you’ve mentioned the eye move to verify your crosshairs and target are on the same focal plane.
Just a tip for those looking for range finders, golf range finders for some reason are way cheaper and work well. Now they arnt as magnified but they can get the job done for less than $100 since we’re talking budget
Accuracy and durability is mainly what you pay for in a firearms specific model and distance is the other thing......golf ones are not very accurate at distance
@@jacobishii6121 good point! As a golfer and shooter i have a Bushnell “golf laser” that I use for both and it’s super accurate but it was also very expensive so definitely pros and cons to both.
I'm so glad that mag fell out. It's just like you're a regular Joe because that shit happens to us too. Especially when using a HOS gun. (Heap o Shit). I started with an S&W i-Bolt if you can remember that junk. Most people hated them, but I dropped the action in a Rem 700 chassis from Boyd's and absolutely love it again.
How many of the smooth brains said your barrel is pointing at you and therefore unsafe……. Thank you for the gyri you’ve grooved into this smooth brain!
Thanks for the content. Have a rem 783 in 30-06 thats been giving me some problems. Will try what you recommended. Also what is a good vortex rangefinder model? For a budget.
Probably not much, I'd imagine most of the people who need a Chrono probably brought one. Why go to the range to use a specific piece of gear and not bring the gear? But you never know.
@@kraagnjilwulf1413 idk man I've been at the range multiple times doing load development and people ask to use it , usually more outta curiosity I guess
I am not doubting your wisdom but others have done the same thing and ended up worse off.I have heard that in some rifles that point of support is needed for stability and hence accuracy...Ended up having to bed the action..
on boomer dogma: is the crown of extreme importance? seems to me that as long as the rifling all terminate at the same distance away from the chamber, you are good to go. they make it sound like the finish of the chamfer is the most important, which never makes contact with the projectile ??
extreme... is a strong word.... It's of fair consequence. It's not about the bullet, it's about the gasses flowing passed the bullet leaving the barrel perfectly evenly.
Really any of the match grade Major brands are going to be on par with each other. And as long as possible up to 26 inches. Of course, this is completely and totally dependent on what you’re doing and how you’re using it
Sometimes you wanna step up, step out and see what the fuck you got. I've been curious to see how far I can push my CZ 600 Ergo before I put my wallet on the altar for a big boy rifle. Thanks for explaining the WHY. Some of us want to develop a wrinkle or two.
The three-round standard deviation is statistically irrelevant and will get much larger with more rounds fired. Once you get to ten, it starts to tell you things. When you get to thirty, you have statistically significant data.
@@OvertonWindex I didn’t say it was irrelevant. I said it was statistically irrelevant. Man, don’t argue with me, argue with the study of statistics. Three data points are simply not enough to develop a confidence level to be predictive. Sure, those three rounds may be representative of the whole, but they may not be. Thats why we look for statistically significant sample sizes. Point of impact of a singular round at 615 yards doesn’t discredit what I said. The rifle could be a 1 MOA shooter with that ammo combined with a normal distribution of velocity and the impact is happenstance, it wouldn’t be out of the question that you’d see 6” of vertical with a SD of 0. A 100 fps change from one round to the next would only change elevation 5” at 600 with a 175 gr ELD-X at 600 yards at sea level from 2880 to 2980 fps.

But if you sand the barrel, then when you replace the stock with a better one later, the barrel won't touch it either!
Barrel to stock: "I'm not touuuuching youuuuu!" 🤣
I need to do this to my Hogue Rem700 stock that I have my .300WM in.
