What a fantastic video. Hits the correct technical detail while explaining methodically, isn't afraid to give tips about better 3rd party solutions, and at no point did I think "why is he explaining the obvious" (some videos on here start out explaining how frame rates work I mean come on). In one video I learned why I get such bad results from Slog, how to correctly set up and expose with my FS5 including explaining base ISO (I use gain so glad Alister covered this), and how to integrate the Atomos with my particular camera system. I found the explanation of how raw outside the camera works completely enlightening. I've always steered clear of raw for fear of unnecessary file sizes so now I stand totally corrected. That comparison of skin tones and compression waveforms vs raw - mind blowing. Thank you so much - heading over to the academy for further learning!!!

Dear Alister, thank you for the great video as always. Will you at some point do a video on the A7sIII Raw capabilities? I wonder how good 12 bit Log Raw will be coming out from the HDMI port (vs SDI). Also, 12 bit log raw should give more information in the lower stops of the camera. Would the A7sIII have at least a stop of more usable dynamic Range in the shadows? Guessing it should but much more looking forward to info from you on this! Alister awesome as always, learnt so much from him. Would love to see Atomos bring out a Ninja V SDI version for raw if possible, a 7" Shogun Inferno is bigger than my Fs5! (too top heavy, lose the small form factor etc.) Don't need switching just a smaller recorder : )
100% agree!! I'm even looking at the BM 12G 5" for just this reason. The Ninja V now has an SDI add-on but still can't record 4k Prores raw 60p. It really is just the form factor stopping from getting one, although the D-tap solution in this video hugely reduces weight and is absolute genius.
I would love to get this with the S1H.
what if there were cameras that were designed only to output raw? would they be smaller and require less processing?

Hi Alister, thank you very much for the video! Though Atomos 12Bit Linear Raw is great we should still remember some of its limitations (while enjoying the benefits) regarding the lack of information in the shadows for 12BIT RAW. Correct?

Getting too much grain from shogun at low light. But internal recording looks great .Any idea what Im doing wrong?
So when the FS5 films in HD it has clear image zoom and digital zoom, but those features go away in 4K. Can you use these features when recording PRORES raw to Shogun?
Will it be possible to record the FX9 Raw signal on the Shogun Inferno?

Hi - Thanks so much for presenting this tutorial, it’s really helpful --you are a great teacher. I am a beginner filmmaker - my preferred camera is Sonys. For the past year, I have been shooting with the Sony PXW Z90. It’s a great camera, but because it a fixed lens it does not allow very much dept of field. I took the leap and recently purchased the Sony FS Mark ll which allows me the freedom to use an interchangeable lens. I understand that the Sony FS is similar to the Mark ll but there are a few additional add-ons to the Mark ll. Could you please be kind enough to do a full editorial on how to use the Mark ll properly? I have spent days searching but have been unsuccessful finding and editorial that offers what I’m sure so many of us need. There are reviews but no “real editorial” from, beginning to end. I called Sony, only to be told (1) it a professional camera, I have to be placed on the call back list - just to speak with a support agent, which is not helpful because there’s so much to be learned. I’m sure it may be asking a lot - but I have run out of options. The world of beginners like me would love you so much!! Take care, stay safe!
If using the atomos + Fs5 to record Prores HQ (not raw) is it still best practise to use Slog2 or in that case is Slog 3 the go to?

Can i ask ? when i use prores RAW the color profile is not flat, color profile slog 2 not working. Is it problem ?

Question. Why is the Ninja V recording time remaining indicator shows @ remaining for a 500GB SSD and yet it suppose to record up to 80+ minutes? I did noticed the record time remaining seems to be at a 3rd of real time recording since for every 3.5 minutes of actual recording, it only reduces the time remaining by 1 min on the ninja v. Any ideas how to fix this? Is there a setting on the ninja v I’m not aware of that needs to be changed to match the actual recording time? Thanks
Been watching this video over and again with my FS5 and Shogun 7 set to S-Log 2 and I'm having problems with highlights blowing out.
Did you fix it? Set it to the mode he talks about in the end. Don't let highlights clip on your shogun monitor
I just recorded ProResRAW with my Nikon Z6 and Atomos Ninja V recorder. 1 minute is 6GB. 30 minutes would then be 180 GB. I feel that is quite large files, but perhaps I'm mistaken?
Can I use the Ninja V with the Sony Fs7 and record prores raw? What would I need to do that?
Sorry, no, the Ninja V is HDMI only and the Fs7 outputs the raw via SDI, you would need to get a Shogun inferno.

@@joshuamartinstudios You need the Sony XDCA Extension unit and an external recorder to record raw on the FS7
@@joshuamartinstudios From what I can find out even with the SDI unit on the Ninja V it cannot take SDI prores raw. I really wish they would just allow it or create a 5 inch recorder that can, 7 inch is a bit unwiedly on the Fs5.
I’m getting insane noise levels in all parts of my image when recording ext raw to the ninja V from the A7Siii. I understand there is no noise reduction in RAW but this noise is insane, even at base ISO. What am I doing wrong?

Anyone know what specific third-party batteries those are? I shoot a lot of boats and using V mounts gets really heavy on a long day but I don't want to use the Mickey Mouse batteries on the back of the Shogun because they last for about ten minutes.
Alistair why is line skipped RAW output considered acceptable on the Sony A1? The aliasing artefacts around horizontal and vertical lines makes this non-usable. Suggest you check it out yourself and report back.

I bought into the Nikon Filmmakers kit when it first came out… by the end of the year they finally came out with upgrade for ProRes RAW
Problem is that FCPX never supported the Nikon / Ninja “game changer” so you end up using either the Nlog LUT or the Sony SII/Cine profile and you gotta spend a LOT of time Color Grading and I haven’t been able to find a consistent workflow… the slightest change in exposer/color and you starting from scratch!!!
(Yes, I used Alister’s LUTs as recommended by other UA-camrs😉)
Open to any suggestions (set is aside for the Pandemic year as lower priority) but it seems that Apple is NEVER going to support Nikon.
hi my atomos v has a "not raw input" icon on the top left corner and don't allow me to record 4k raw with my fs5. I did unlock the raw feature on fs5. Can you help me?

Thank you for reaching out. The "not raw input" icon on your Ninja V indicates that the camera may not be set up to output a raw signal. To record in 4K raw with your FS5, please make sure to:
Output a raw signal from your camera.
Select the ProRes RAW codec on your Ninja V.
Ensure you have the SDI module installed, as raw output with FS5 is possible through the SDI input.
Activate the raw license for SDI raw in your Ninja V.
Once you've checked and adjusted these settings, you should be able to record in 4K raw.
If you continue to experience difficulties, please don't hesitate to contact us for further assistance.

Is ProRes Raw lossless or lossy?
Really wish Sony didn’t require the huge extension module for the FX9 just to get RAW output .. the FS5, EVA1, S1H, Canon c300 mkII all do it without an expensive and enormous add on module. Why make me go to another camera manufacturer that doesn’t require extra add on modules that are large and expensive (I know .. I keep saying that). The module for the FX9 has many things I won’t ever need .. just need the RAW output. The fact is most cameras enabling ProRes RAW do so without requiring bulky and expensive additional hardware (besides the Atomos recorder). Ok, enough of my rant. Great and thorough video though.
Stupid Sony Lawsuit stopping 3rd party batteries with D-Tap!! So frustrating.... only option is to move to Mini VLock!

I can confirm that prores Raw can be edited in premiere pro on a windows machine! Finally, but you must install the beta version 14.2(I believe) or above...
