Hi Luke. I started learning English by myself when I was 30 years old. At the beginning, I studied grammar, and small readings. Latter, when the audiobooks came out, I started listening to them and I'm still doing it. I have been learning it for fun.
I speak Spanish and have learned portuguese. As in English, I have used the same method for learning Portuguese. Currently, I'm 71 years old, and I have been learning French for 3 years now. Since the arrival of the internet, the learning of a foreign language has became easier because I can use all the resources such as postscast, like yours which are very interesting, and I appreciate them a lot. Also audiobooks, music, news reports, among many others.
In my opinion and according to my experience, I can say that listening and repeating have played an important part in my learning of the foreign languages. Currently, I enjoy reading English, Portuguese, Spanish and French literatura. I believe there's no age to learn.

Yeah, I agree with you defiantly but in social media they make silly viral viduos so realistic, attempting and charming (basis on human psychology) that it's so difficult even for me to just leave the shorts in UA-cam and see what is Luke is saying although I know it's way valuable for me.

I learn whole sentences saying them aloud. 5 days - 300 repetitions per day at least. Later I don't need to translate. I know the meaning of words straight away like in my native language. And also I remember the meaning longer than by learning separate words. This method is called: chunking. It was a real game changer in my learning process and communication skills in English and other languages.😊

@@LionCall-yi3dlDifficult question. The ones which are the most useful for you. Take a ready sentence which is correct without mistakes. Best are short sentences 4-5 words. Repeat them thousands of times saying them aloud. You can repeat a sentence for one hour so you have arround 1000 repetitions. Repeat untill you stop making mistakes and it is effortless. Benefits: you train your pronunciation and clarity of speech. It helps with problems with speaking. No need for thinking about grammar as you have ready to use correct phrases. It also helps with understanding of fast speech.
I usually try to do this with tedtalks scripts
@@LionCall-yi3dl You can also use tongue twisters and sentences packed with difficult grammar. I change the speed of saying them for example from extremely slow with each letter carefuly pronounced to very fast.

I've end up being among those the blessed who have a knack for learning a language. I finished school with a poor A2 level and returned back to studying almost at 40. Being passionate about this global language, I've managed to successfully complete courses B1,B2 and confirmed the level by IELTS EXAM. Of course, age matters, memory doesn't work like it used to work in my 20 s, yet learning new things are immensely rewarding. Owing to knowing English I've altered my career dramatically and become a teacher of English, possessing freedom of working from home and being in a high demand. I remember being 'greedy' in my language learning journey. There was always not enough for me, I was looking for more ways and resources to help me to be better at English. I remember reading fiction books in English and looking for someone I could talk to. There were no apps at the time like today where you could easily find English speaking friends but I did find a website and it was so incredibly interesting to chat with people around the world. So, the most important thing in your learning is that what you do must be something you can hook on, so this way it's easier to turn anything into a regular habit.

Hi Luke, you're a great teacher, my mentor I would say. Thank you so much, I can't tell you how grateful I am to have you here on You tube. Your podcasts are a goldmine really. What works for me is immersion and a maximum exposure to the language with podcasts, music, series, books and of course through the interaction with people. In the place I live, we have what we call "le café polyglotte" where we can meet native or non native people to have rambling conversations in English but also in Spanish or Italian or even Russian sometimes. First and foremost I would say that what matters most is to have fun with the language you learn, keeping in mind that this is a bit like changing one's identity, as if acting on stage... How enthralling! Learning a language is a never ending story and humility is also the key word even when you have reached a seemingly good level. Can't wait to listen to your next podcast 😊
Hello! Thanks for this new episode, Luke! Your personal view on the best way of learning a language absolutely resonates with my idea on this issue. I guess there is no universal method everyone can apply in order to become fluent in L2. I mean, of course, any regular language practice is helpful in language learning. The thing is we can't practise regularly for a long time(and language learning is a lifelong journey) if we are not enjoying the process that's why every learner should work out their own approach to learning which will appeal to them.

The way I study English is comprehensible input, find the favorite topics in UA-cam and keep watch it for 1 hour everyday, then I would talk to my self in English to draw a conclusion of the contents of video. I can totally understand the contents of Luke's English Podcast, though my English is not good enough. 🥲Thank you so much Luke and I hope I could see more videos about language learning.
My method to learn English is basically similar. First I Iisen to luke's podcast, I identify new bacabulary words and new expresiones, then write down some questions about the podcast, and then I answere those questions by speaking outloud. So this strategy helps me improve my listening, my speaking and helps me expand my vocabulary words as well.

I personally realise that my contemporary way of improving my English is doing shadowing technique with your podcasts. When i was studying in Italy, i had to learn italian for the exams, for everyday routine communication and for socializing as well.
Unlike my countrymen, i made italian friends and had a girlfriend too.
The result?
Approximately three years after (1975), on a bus in Greece, i caught myself speaking to the collector in italian without acknowledging it, but for the surprised face of his.
"Un biglieto per favore".
In 1994, i went to Rimini for vacations. For the last 18 years i lived in Greece, and hadn't visited Italy ever since nor spoken italian to anyone but rarely.
In a bar in Rimini i had a conversation with an attendant there, who told me that i was from south Italy.
Until this day that language has definitely stuck in my head, so as much that my wife, who has studied there too, but for only two years, every now and then asks me the meaning of an italian word (she is Eros Ramazzotti's fan) and in most cases there it is its meaning.
Long story short: As you say repeatedly, 'Language acquisition is something that it is done for the most part.' It needs strong motivation too.

The approach now I am using involves shadowing the whole episode (sometime just half of it), for those which I personally find intrigue me the most (for example the conversation with Amber and Paul, or when Luck talks on his own). I would shadow it first without any subtitles, in this way, some words could be pronounced without knowing the meaning, but I would guess and feel it in context and infer the possible meaning by looking at their facial expressions and so on. After this, I would go back and turn on the subtitle, looking up the words that I have noticed, then check the meaning IN ENGLISH rather than in my first language. I find this is extremely help for me as it allows me to try my best to keep up the normal native speaker's talking speed and get a sense of how they connect words together in sentences.

Very interesting. I would add one more skill to the usual four that are: reading, writing, listening and speaking. The fifth skill, to my opinion, is thinking. When you have trained your brain to work according to a 2L vocabulary, grammar and proper wording/phrasing, you can express yourself. Expressing oneself is basically "speaking out". What can one speak out if there is nothing in? So to me, learning a language is an ongoing process of building another inner world through - that sounds absolutely right - interaction with other people, their feelings, opinions, interests and knowledge. When you speak a second language, you don't just change your old clothes for new ones, I mean you don't put new words on the same ideas you're made of. New words are the very threads your new ideas are woven into. They are the new way you see a new world while becoming a new person, while adding new perspective to your entire worldview.

If you want to learn English you must hard work. Learn vocabulary, grammar, listening, and also speaking. It's very difficult process, and if you want to have a good English level, you'll must spend lots of time.
@@yb2349Oh no ! You won't be fluent ( what does it mean to be fluent anyway ? ) just by listening, to believe that is to believe a myth. You'll have to practise too. Realise that babies acquire their mother tongues by chunks no words. There is not easy ways to learn a langage.

Great advice and facts and figures, tips and tricks to learn a language. Good way to clear the people's illustrations that proficiency is not most important. The significant ways how to handle different situation and scenario in perfect way.no doubt its a long term goal and continue struggle to learn a language. LUKE english podcast is one of the best platform to learn upper of intermediate level. I began to learn the language with children's stories but when i got a full grip then i felt its bouring for me. Thanks for going through this article with us. I need to catch up with the whole article but the summary looks fascinating - thanks for that AI! The conclusion I've come to with language learning is that everything works - every method, resource etc has the potential to work. I guess this comes back to the second point about finding a method that works for you as opposed to following the trends. Some people have even had great results with uncool methods like grammar-translation. Looking at the points though, I feel like language learning requires a lot of time, patience and effort and that's not the message that people want to hear!

Thank you very much for your clear explanation. Some languages such as russian require that you master the grammar well from the start. If not it will become hopeless when you are reading or hearing the language.

Starting point: almost nothing is just black and white.
In order to study and describe any phenomenon, process or activity, scientifically or not, one tends to break it down into almost "atomic pieces" and then fails to put them together again.
As an example of the consequences of such behaviour is the study of the aging effect on learning a second language. Finding a correlation between age and accent, performance, grades, etc., does not mean a causal relationship at all, provided confusion factors were not control at first. Correlation exist between age and many other factor (time one can dedicate to study, family and jod responsabilities, exposure to the language, time to be corrected, tolerance to not achieving results quikly enough, etc.) that can affect learning a second language rather than the age itself.
In the same way, we tend to define as logic dictates, mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive categories, when in the real world they overlap to different degrees. That is the case of the "learning styles". It is almost impossible to find "pure" styles, as we use multiple (inner and outer) resources and strategies to learn, even though we tend to follow more some or other styles at a specific time.
Regarding exposure and attention, many people listen to a lot of music in a foreign language and do not learn it, or al least not a significant amount or at an instrumental level. Many people live and work in a foreign country and do not learn the local language. Being there is not enough. Nevertheless, even without paying attention one can learn something. Again, it is not black and white.
The way we focus on exposure, attention and how we combine them and other factors as time, styles, resources, motivation, goal, etc. are key to succed or not or the results we get. ☯

I started to learn English when I was 50 years old, and I really It's one of my favourite things for almost 20 years , maybe and can't do It pretty well, but I still love It as mucho as I did when I started learning It 20 years ago, It hasn' been easy at allí, I may be forgetting It , but I think I won' t give up, in spite I can Talk to anybody in English, just throut the netbor reading books, and this is the first podcast in UA-cam I really like, most of them are bad, boring, too short, you can just realice they try to buy you something, or to have a lot of followers. You're the best one by fast, so far, I wish I could speak it aloud or out loud, and that os not posible as I can't t do It at home because my husband hates It, perhaps I usually may do it really bad.

By the way, I guess you will become a father again soon, well congrats. :) I want to share my experience learning English. I was having trouble understading English, so i started watching South Park without subtitles. It was horrible at the beginning. I didnt understand anything that they mentioned. After watching several "seasons", i started to understand what they were talking about. So i think practice is important but you need to push your limits.

To be honest I started learning English at school. Studying english in primary school was easy. Mainly that was based on learning basic vocabulary and grammar. In middle school I had really good teacher who make I was having fun during english studying. Basically I was only doing things what we were doing at school. I was studying vocabulary, grammar rules and reading. One time when I visited United Kingdom and I had to spoke with english community I realised my spoking and listening skills are on the terrible level. I was disappointed. After over 9 years of english lessons in school I realised my english is not so good like my grades. I decided to change something with my english journey and I started listening podcasts like your channel and BBC learning english channel. I hope I'm gonna be on the B2 level soon. Sorry for my grammar fails :D

I know there are many other ways to learn alanguage and each person has your own way. Personaly I think I'm a very auditive person because my English is much better after I started listen to your Podcast . Thanks Teacher Luke.

But at the same time, I often do not understand what announcers say on American television, because I cannot separate the end of the previous word and the beginning of the next one.
My FEEDBACK: i'm French,
i learned English after quitting school at 17 y.o, and was a bad at learning english and spanish. and i became really better because i bought american comics that were not available in France, i never put my foot in an english speaking country.
At 29 Y.O, i decided to learn Japanese because the very first MANGAS i bought were not yet translated in French, so.. kanjis, hiragana and Katakana became my friends during the night i studied alone at home , internet did not yet exist and learning japanese, was costly, only for rich people. and i had a japanese girlfriend later....
At 51 i decided to learn Russian, because i met a splendid Russian woman of 48 y.o and decided that to communicate better i hed to learn her language as she learned my language, and my constant motivation, was to learn with UA-cam, and my strategy was also the the constant use, every day use of mangas. and animes.
Now i learn russian while reading One PIECE, My hero academia, chainsaw man, Demon slayer etc.....and also watching episodes on TV
i began russian, since 3 and a half year, and speak good russian, but now i do not master declinaisons... not yet.
