I respectfully disagree. I found the Rogers and Hammerstein parody to be extremely cringy. And considering that lots of people unironically like the games mentioned, the #1 spot struck me as little more than opinionated whining.
An interesting thing is how Sonic X-Treme got cancelled which is by the feud between Sega of Japan and Sega of America. STI couldn't get the game done without Yuji Naka's help and Yuji said fuck you i'm not giving you the Nights engine even if its to save the company. And without it the project collapsed and Sega gave Sonic team Japan the go ahead to make Sonic Adventure for the Saturn.
That Sega vs Sega war. Sega: You might know everything I'm going to do. But that's not going to help you, since I know everything you're going to do! Strange, isn't it!
This cost Sega the Sega Playstation. After Nintendo's stunt, Sony considered working with Sega to spite them before finally developing the console themselves. Sega of America actually approved the thing, but Sega of Japan being the home base and therefore being the last word didn't like any ideas that aren't theirs vetoed them. The result was pretty much karma, with Sony running both Nintendo and Sega out of the console wars for the next two gens.
@@No_Sleepee Which is funny because that bit was a reference to the Sonic CD OVA, the official debut of Metal Sonic and...possibly the weirdest iteration of Sonic ever...and considering the existence of The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, that's saying a lot. (Side note, I'm not saying I hated the OVA, in fact, I love it. It has flaws, sure, but it's just too dang much fun for me to care half the time.) O.o
@@thomasedwardharrison2879 Wrong, Here are some more fails, Secret level was unable to make GoldenAxe Beast rider a good game because Sega forced them to make the Ironman game at the same time. Dimps wanted Sonic 4 to used sprites but Sega forced them to use 2.5 instead. Sonic Boon was originally going to be on the Ps4 but Sega once again forced Big Red Button to have the game be on the Wii U despite the fact that Cyengine don't work on the WiiU. When Sega fired the dreamcast voice actors for the 4kides actors them didn't even tell them that were being fired, Ryan Drummond himself bought Shadow '05 and discovered they were all replaced with the 4Kids Cast, leading him to contact SEGA only for them to say that all of them were fired and replaced, literally forcing Ryan to contact the rest of the V.A Cast to tell them they'd all been fired from SEGA (Yes, that actually fucking happened). Finally Sega of Europe place Denuvo on the version of Sonic Mania which teciacas issues, so what did Sega do they blamed Christian Whitehead, despite Whitehead saying he had nothing to due with Denuvo. Sega may not be the least evil.
Didn't Einstien say that the definition of insanity as "Doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results? I define it as, "Most of Sega's financial decisions."
Kinda makes me want to make my own spoof of the Modern Major General song. I mean, EA did it too! Oh wait, that's not a good comparison... even if it was Mass Effect 2.
A big failure of Sega's handhelds were their size. A Gameboy could fit into your pocket while a Gamegear could not. Nintendo made a hard restriction on the size of the Gameboy. They made the outer shell first and the hardware designers had to fit all they wanted into it. Sega though wanted the Gamegear to play master system games and so it was made larger.
@@whitethunder9064 Apparantly there was a lot of back-and-forth in Nintendo as many wanted to make just a portable NES. However that size restriction was something the higher ups and Kompai refused to budge on. It HAD to fit into a standard jeans pocket. They also calculated out what the average time for a road trip in Japan was and mandated that the Gameboy should be able to last that long. Finally they also calculated out a maximum price the device was not allowed to exceed. Mostly that the GB was not allowed to cost more than 3 game cartridges. So Nintendo could have just squished a NES into a box and put a screen and buttons on it like Sega did. But they actually took a good hard look first around how to make it practical for what it needed to do, how to keep it portable and how much people would be willing to pay for it. Once they had all of that figured out and had design perimeters set only then would the actual hardware design begin. That size and power requirement especially was a headache for designers but they largely managed. It was low powered but included a lot of smart features that when utilized well could allow the GB to match or even exceed the NES. The GB is inferior to the NES in raw power but it does have several advanced features that the NES did not have.

Calling it now the debacle that was Diablo Immortal's reveal will be in the top 3. Say what you will about Diablo 3's messy launch but at least Activision-Blizzard managed to salvage Diablo 3 and turn it into the awesome game that it is.
Some of my predictions the call of duty infinite warfare/Modern warfare remastered controversie the treatment of crash and spyro before recently being revived Tony hawk pro skater decline and causing the oversautuerion of the music game genre and toys to life genre and more
If I have to pick 2 more fails from SEGA I would choose these ones: - There's also some times SEGA develops IP's that are ONLY EXCLUSIVE to Japan for their consoles, that never see the light in the rest of the world; one of the big examples is the Sakura Wars series, a strategical game featuring mechs but also a date simulator, where you are the new commander of a secret army, disguised as a theatrical group, and you can choose which of the girls you want to have at the end of the game. There are 5 games of this franchise, featuring armies from Japan, France and US, but the world only had access to the last game, and a few cameos (the most recent was in the Project X Zone games for the 3DS). - If SEGA has a potential MMORPG shouldn't it presented to the rest of the world? Of course I'm talking about Phantasy Star Online 2, one of its most profitable games, that, once again, is exclusive to Japan. It has a long lifespan, maybe even higher than Final Fantasy XIV Online, but never got a port to the world. It was that bad, that fans had to make drastic measures to not only have a somewhat translated game port, but also a cruiseship exclusively for those players. But if there's a bit of light of hope is that SEGA understood some of its mistakes. PSO2 is finally making is way to the world, and some old IP's are coming back.
PSO2 is going to be exclusive to xbox one though. Where is the love for switch and PS4 owners, even PSvita owners who still have a vita (seeing as that game was on that system). Also the next sakura wars is being made by a newly formed sonic team in the US I believe.
Good list. The way how SEGA treats Sonic is just disgusting. Sonic is one of my childhood heroes and nostalgic icons along with pokemon and seeing what happened to it really is sad. Also that last part with Sonic 06 was masterfully hilarious. It has chaos expected for a calamitous game. You make some good points and your top 10 company fails lists are really interesting, as I can learn more about gaming itself, from games to background and more. Very well done.
I honestly wonder if he had anyone slated for this specifically before and changed it due to the most recent pyre-raising, or if that was his intention, but yeah, good timing. Bring out the marshmallows, the coals are still warm!
Hey buddy, how can we make crash team racing better? Some new characters and tracks, maybe add crossover characters like Spyro. No that’s stupid, let’s add microtransactions when we get good ratings, then add it later. Microtransactions is the future of gaming.
Though ur comment is 3 years old if you want the song this originally came from it is from Gilbert and Sullivan's pirates of the penzance the modern major general's song.
Sonic '06 is so ironically iconic, there was a sort of podcast featuring the Sonic and Eggman voice actors where they (in character) quote Arin's meltdown of, "you gotta look inside yourself and say, 'what am I willing to put up with today!?'"
Well, at least SEGA treats their fans well. I mean Sonic Mania was created by fans of the series. And they praise any fanmade content. Despite their flaws, SEGA is still a good company in the eyes of their fans. When it comes to Sonic, I only consider two games to be bad; Sonic '06 and Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. Everything else ranges from okay to amazing.
sonic 06 does have two benefits though: the poor game design can be pretty fun to break, making it fun in its own right, and the music is genuinely good. seems like sonic team always succeeds in the musical department even if the game itself is underwhelming
@@psychie8625 I didn't mind it but my god it was the first introduction I think of the new VA of Vector and how irritating it was. *sigh* I miss the VA for him in Sonic Heroes
Predictions: 1. Sonic 06 2. The legal problems with Ken Penders 3. Not fully utilizing the power of their consoles which lead to them signing a contract with Nintendo, resulting in Sonic and the secret Rings, Sonic Lost world, etc. 4. Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric 5. Night Trap 6. Keeping their insane deadline policy, despite this biting them in the butt numerous times 7. The marketing for the Dreamcast 8. Making promises they can’t keep 9. The treatment of their other IPs that isn’t owned by another company and isn’t named Sonic the hedgehog. 10. Nostalgia pandering to an audience that has already grown up and moved on. Like the old sega ceo said “They seem to have made the wrong decisions for 20 years.”
At least he didn't get it as bad as Bernie Stolar. AKA the guy who Sega hired to ensure the success of the Dreamcast and then got fired for doing just that.
There's no comic artist/author I despise as much as him. I'm fully aware that there are far, FAR worse *coughcoughFrankMillercough* but he's the one I personally hate the most.
Ken Penders isn't the only bad egg regarding the sonic comics. The person discussed in this video here is the one responsible for starting the sally acorn hate train that plagues the sonic fandom to this day. Also Iann flynn tributed to the hate train by making sally (the reboot version after the sonic and megaman crossover) into a lesbian and crushing on her a.i. nicole in the name of sonamy. ua-cam.com/video/Mh3Iw4sncvI/v-deo.html
AutZentus 1. That video doesn’t have anything addressing Ian Flynn’s statement, that video’s about John Gray and his role in starting the shipping war. 2. Ian Flynn did NOT make Sally into a lesbian, he said in a twitter post that it was an interesting idea to mull around. A ‘what if’ scenario. He never officially did it.
@@LegendPurpleDragon152 "That video doesn’t have anything addressing Ian Flynn’s statement" Did I say anywhere that it did? No I only brought Ian flynn up as part of a side note.
I'm torn on the whole neglected IPs bit. I mean, on the one hand, yeah, some of it (NiGHTS) is always going to be niche and stuck languishing in obscurity, or stuck in an "only in Japan" existence (Phantasy Star). But on the other hand, we end up with blatant cash grabs like Golden Axe: Beast Rider that's right next to Sonic '06 in how poorly a game can be handled. Am I wrong in thinking it might just be better for Sega to let its IPs lay fallow than to churn out shovelware like the more recent Sonic games?
Sega truly does what Nintendon’t. Which’s releasing a console on the same day it’s revealed, horribly mismanaging their own mascot’s series and pretending that only 3 of their franchises still exist. Also, that song at the end was brilliant, and I totally can’t wait for the Activision fails list!👍🏽
Nintendo dominates Sega in the long run. Forces was severely out-beaten by Odyssey, they STILL have franchises that audiences enjoy (Zelda, Pokemon, Kirby, etc.), they made a CGI film and release it without extensive redesigns AND redeemed Sonic by inviting him to Super Smash Bros from Brawl onwards in several months following Sonic 06.
Azog Defiler Yes, that being Sonic, Yakuza and Valkyria Chronicles. At least if we don’t count franchises that they own but are still published by other companies, like Bayonetta and SMT/Persona.
This list was very well done, I look forward to these everytime. It didn’t just talk about the fails with Sonic and instead focused on bigger more notable fails and honestly, with the number 1 spot I feel like the treatment in development isn’t the best and can just be easily fixed if you have the fans make both the 2D and 3D Sonic games, much like with Mania, and have Sonic Team work on the other IPs so they can potentially make notably more money. Though the games you mentioned in the number 1 segment are mostly just down to opinion as a lot of fans love Unleashed now and some games like Shadow or 06 can be fun to make fun of. Still makes a lot of sense why you put it at number one.
Honestly, SAGE could be used as a way to scout out good potential game developers if you were smart about it. Sega's sitting on a gold mine of creative talent that they could tap quite easily. One that'd not only let them get some potential life into their commonly used franchises but let them have breathing room to start using their lesser used ones.
That’s why I love this series so much. Even after it’s fails it gets back up and keeps going for the people that do love it. Even if the critics aren’t so kind. The series never really has to be one thing, it always wants to give something new while still appreciating the old. It’s the definition of perseverance in gaming and entertainment culture. Although SEGA themselves don’t really seem to see that development need a little bit more care and still manages to give the fans a fun time. Other companies go absolutely above and beyond with it and it’s incredible. Dare I say Paramount is at least learning from their mistake with the first trailer for the Sonic Movie, they acknowledge they messed up and are fixing the main problem being whatever the heck the old design was and if it was any other person working on a video game movie that got that much backlash they would’ve just done nothing because they know they’ll still get some easy cash. But it seems like they might actually be trying, we just didn’t see that much of it.
Holiday Rushing their products Sega Genesis expansions That horrible gba port of Sonic 1 Their former partnership with ATGames (I expect this one would be low on the list since they learned from this mishap eventually and did the microconsole themselves)
Yeah, I had a feeling everything related to Sonic would be grouped together as one massive failure, and that it would take the number one spot. I mean, when you think about it logically, it HAD to be this way. Otherwise, about half the list would be nothing but Sonic. Edit: Sonic 06 was a shitstorm of epic proportions, but the one thing I feel it had going for it was it's villain. Eggman is my favorite Sonic villain overall, but Mephiles was pretty damn good too, especially for a single game villain who disappears after the end of the game. Plus the design of his crystallized form when you right him as Shadow and the music for that fight are both amazing.
Can’t forget Silver. As awkward as his first forey into the series was, i overall think he was a good character. Sonic 06 also introduced the idea of Shadows inhibitor rings to the games, which r honestly one of the two good things, in my opinion, to come put of the anime. Dark Sonic is the other
@@prettyinpink903 I honestly can't say I agree about Silver, but I don't think I've played any of the recent Sonic games he's been in. I just don't like that (in 06 at least) he feels like a complete ripoff of Future Trunks from Dragonball Z, but I think his design is cool at least. I will agree about the 2 only good things from Sonic X bit though, and really wish we've seen the Dark Sonic concept used elsewhere since then, in games anyways, as I am pretty sure they've used it in the Archie Comics before.
Moostached Saiyan Prince they teased at it a bit with Darkspine Sonic, but it would b cool to see it. And Silver has gotten a lot better with time, now that the developers know wat to do with him. He’s a much more developed character, has been better integrated
17:50 It's a shame, really. I really would've liked to see something along the lines of Sonic and the Three Kingdoms. With Big as Xu Chu and Eggman as Dong Zhuo (though I'm still not sure who would be Lu Bu).
Funny little factoid, Edgy the Hedgy’s dark and gritty, gun toting, ambivalence was at least partially done because of fan demand. If anyone ever say gamers know better than developers, well, ya know.
Same. It’s honestly not as bad as people say. And fans kept asking SEGA to giv Sonic a gun, which would hav been very out of character. And they realized that they could use Shadow to satisfy fan demand
According to the podcast Business Wars, the developers that Sega contracted to make game for the Saturn were PISSED when they heard the Saturn announcement at E3 because their games wouldn’t be done until the holiday season.
Ok... That serenade was so ingenious that Josh briefly ascended this reality before coming back to Earth and announcing Activision fails (which I could’ve sworn he already did, but eh) Awesome work on the list btw!!
Yeah, about that Ken Penders thing... As an addendum, I feel we should talk about SEGA's lack of love towards the fan communities who still like the other stuff. Specifically: Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic SatAM, Sonic Underground, the Archie Sonic comic, the Fleetway Sonic comic...and let's throw in the OAV for good measure. Rather ironic too, considering Sonic Forces is pretty much a SatAM game. Eggman/Robotnik takes over the world...Sonic and friends form a band of freedom fighters to fight back...fans can insert themselves into the story (as an avatar for the game or as a self insert for SatAM fanfiction). BTW...bonus points for the "Modern Major General" thing at the end. How many takes did that take you?!?
I'm still cheesed that Sega forced the whole Two DImensions (Modern and Classic) and Worlds (Sonic's and the Human World) rules onto the IDW comic series.
Especially when they could’ve easily established that the human world is the main-line world, while the world with anthropomorphic animals could’ve been the sol dimension as humans never appeared in that dimension besides Eggman Nega.
And folks complain about KHs continuity lol, unfortunately this is another example of the fan's knowing the franchise better the developers. For awhile I didn't know Silver OR Blaze's place in the new timeline (since 06 erased itself from the continuity) however I watched a couple vids explaining the new timeline; essentially Sonic Rush took place after 06, then Sonic first meets Silver in the rivals games, then Rush Adventure takes place and finally Blaze as well as Silver actually first meet each other (in the new timeline) in Sonic Colours DS.
@@andrestewart2316 And that means eggman nega comes from another dimension entirely seeing as he goes between screwing with blaze and silver at the same time. This does make me ask why does eggman nega flip flop his allegiance with eggman and how is it that either sonic, tails, and maybe knuckles not recognize or realize that the eggman they face with is really eggman nega.
While I do agree it was a scumbag move to lie about the makers of Forces, I want to point out that Big Red Button were not at fault for Rise of Lyric. Yes they made the game, but as Matt points out in his "Wha Happun" video, it was mostly (if not entirely) SEGA's fault due to their constant meddling. Also I can't seem to find any information proving that Big Red Button worked on Forces. Yes the image in the video shows they've worked with SEGA, but that's obviously on Rise of Lyric for the Wii U.
Mark Henderson Yeah, True, but Konami and EA are straight up evil, EA sweatshops their employees and Konami is basically a ruthless dictator. This is coming from someone who doesn’t really know too much about Activision but I doubt anyone could be more evil than EA or Konami, which is why I consider them worse than Activision.
Considering that Activision owns Blizzard, I’m wondering if Josh is going to address their recent actions of banning a Hearthstone player from tournaments because he publicly supported Hong Kong protests against China; or if Josh is going to wait for the dust to settle first.
@@tominator6684 heck one fan managed to make Forces better by putting in a Chaos 0 boss battle as an extra stage! That alone should tell you how the fans know how to treat sonic better than sega. Well... For the most part.
The song in question is Modern Major General from The Pirates of Penzance. It's been used in a handful of other things too including Animaniacs and of course, ReBoot. (Glad to see someone else remembers that show!)
@@Aeoncalcos91 Yeah, I realized this after the fact and watching some coments, so yeah... I learned something new. I didn't know it was a song from an opera. My memories of the melody went with what I said, so... yeah.
Unbelievable finale for this countdown, Firebrand, being to able to keep the entire meter of Modern Major-General is a hard thing, but you knocked it out of the park! To be fair, Sega Japan's advertising of the Sega Saturn graced us with the epicness of Segata Sanshiro, who is just the best bad-ass ever, as he's played by none other than Hiroshi Fujioka, the original Kamen Rider Takeshi Hongo.
Oh dear god... looking at this again reminded me... Someone is actually making a hentai comic shipping Sonic and Elise... That's Rule 34 for you... bringing some things we never thought anyone had the balls to make...
6:20 Josh, Sega of Japan was aware of the 32X, and the American division knew of the Saturn. The president of Sega of Japan sent a couple of their execs to meet with Sega of America engineers to create a more advanced Genesis with more colors and lower cost (Source: SegaRetroDotOrg). It was instead suggested to make it an add-on, to take advantage of the existing Genesis user-base and extend the life of the platform. *This was approved by Sega of Japan as a countermeasure to stop the Jaguar because the Saturn wouldn't arrive until a year later or so.* Also, Gunstar Heroes is not a franchise that belongs to Sega. Yes, they published it, but Treasure is the owner of the IP.
@@thomasedwardharrison2879 I think SquareEnix and Namco is the least Evil, they at least make games. Sega only cares for Pachinko and arcades sells more than console games. Until 2020 for obvious reasons.
@@orangeslash1667 imagine a line, on the far left you will find indie devs and hello games (least evil), between that and the middle you will find Namco and Sega (not really evil, but can be a jerk). You know what, bravo on that last musical bit. I have two brothers who happen to like Sonic 06 (I'm indifferent to it), but I think even they would laugh due to well put together that was. And you know what, I can't rhyme like that. So kudos.
There's some misinformation in this video regarding Big Red Button (BRB). Nintendo and Sega had signed a contract which would put 3 Sonic games on the Wii U, those being Mario and Sonic, Sonic Lost World, and Sonic Boom (originally Sonic Synergy). Boom was going to be released on PC, but Sega forced BRB to make the game playable on the Wii U. This is what caused the game to suffer. BRB didn't work on Forces' level design. It was actually 3 people from Sonic Team who made them. Only one person had actually worked on a previous Sonic game, being Lost World. The other two were newbies. Also I will defend Sonic Unleashed to the ends of the earth.
Me: "hey Nintendo we getting next Metroid game soon, or will you finally retire that series" Nintendo: "we're working on prime 4" Me: "shouldn't that one be out in late 2019?" Nintendo: "do you want another federation force?" Me: "I'll shut up now"
They didn’t work on sonic forces. It was the supervisor team that hired Big Red Button for Rise of lyric that played a hand in the making of Sonic Forces.
Jesus Christ. I'm pretty sure only Sonic, Persona, and Puyo Puyo are currently being constantly worked on. And two of those are currently run by Sonic Team.
Just because it's a "wacky" transformation doesn’t mean the Werehog is bad. The concept as a whole makes sense and provides great interactions between characters that aren’t edgy or forced in any way,the gameplay itself was slow but was developed in a great way considering how fun and complex the battle system was, much more than just a simple button masher. More than 10 years later and the “Unleashed is only half good” excuse is pretty lame, just like Sonic Adventure 2 being “1/3 good”
It slowed the usually speedy gameplay to a halt, certainly doesn't really compare to the best the genre can offer(it has not a damn thing on Devil may Cry, bet on that) and is actually...undercooked in various aspects(such as performance, as I've seen MULTIPLE cases of slowdown, or music, where they didn't account for variety) It's half baked and passable at best, but it's a good example of Sega trying to reinvent the whell and falling flat on their faces each time. Try to build in what you already established, pinheads. Trying to create a new gimmick each game hasn't given consistent results for a reason
Instead of overcompensating for their mistakes. Sega could always just bring back the Sonic Adventure format, starting with remaking 06 *_and getting it right._* Hear me out, I know it sounds silly but I know of one audience who could buy that. That target demographic being the memers. They could see that and try it to see if it's another trainwreck, but then the surprise factor comes in and it turns out to be a solid game. Thus, bringing more consumers along and bing bang boom. It's a success!
Its get worse than Yuji Naka leaving, I did some research on the sonic wiki to to answer the question how is Sonic unleashed a passionate game with out Naka. Well it turns out the director Yoshihisa Hashimoto Is not only a programer on Sonic advance 2 but he made the Hedgehog Engine. Sadly he left Sega for Square Enix, and Sonic Unleashed is the last Sonic game to be made by sonic team USA. Thats two Developers that Sega lost. 3d Sonic so far is about as dead as Metal Gear.
15:54 I like the idea of the character, I do (Lore wise. It's kinda of interesting, although you could argue that Eggman is more so.), but the execution? It's just not good. It's as deep as a swimming pool.

Sonic Forces is actually a guilty pleasure of mine. I'm a sucker when it comes to character creation, and who hasn't dreamed of making their own Sonic character? The levels were enjoyable and the music was great too! That said, I acknowledge that it's far from perfect. It's a short game, the visuals for the avatar leave something to be desired, and the voice acting definitely needed improvement at times. Still, I can still come back to enjoy it.
Another thing is when Sega DOES try something new they usually half ass it and then wonder why it failed?. Let's see: a massive gaming icon with tons of lore/character to draw from; the Sonic the hedgehog franchise + expectational experience with RPG/JRPGs e.g; Phastasy Star, Yakuza as well as owning Atlus = an awesome Sonic RPG spin-off that rivals the likes of Paper Mario TTYD or PMD EoS as a memorable quality spin-off with great nuances. The reality: outsourcing your no1 IP to Bioware (we all know what happened to that company) + a lawsuit from Ken Panders (gotta love the lack of common sense here) = a forgettable, mediocre (at best) game; Sonic chronicles and the dark brotherhood and the death of a Sonic spin-off franchise before it even had the chance to take off... Speaking of dead Sonic spin-offs... remember Sonic riders? and how Free-Riders essentially killed it off?. :/
If I could add to the Sonic Failure is that Sonic Boom the game, was released nearly 10 years after Sonic 06 and fell victim to the same mistakes that made Sonic 06 so infamous. Both games had horrible glitches because they weren’t properly big tested before release. This was because both games were rushed and released prematurely to meet a deadline. Sonic Boom was actually supposed to be released in 2015, but was rushed for Christmas. Sonic 06 was rushed for its anniversary celebration. In the end, Sega didn’t learn its lesson about rushing an unfinished product. And you’d think a failure as bad as Sonic 06 would forever remind them to not repeat the mistakes of the past. BUT THEY DID ANYWAY.
The one I’ve been waiting for... And the Nintendo one too And for some one who’s started getting involved in sonic for over a year now I’d say that the last couple of games were lacklustre at best (besides Sonic mania) and people can’t tell that the games were lacking soul and bit of heart and having less ideas with the character. And don’t get me started on the horrors of Sonic 06 and/or Sonic boom: Rise Of lyric (even though I’ve never played it and probably never will) The only games I’ve played so far were Team Sonic Racing, Sonic Forces And a bit of Sonic mania And I’m looking forward to the new Mario and sonic Olympic game coming out soon
Nintendo will probably be last. With my guess at the number 1 fail being Nintendo's poor reactions to fan-made content which originally was Nintendo striking down anything from fan-projects, LPs/video walkthroughs, and fan-made reviews then Nintendo tried to get in on the whole LP and fan-made review craze with their UA-cam program the Nintendo's Creators Club which was a disaster for obvious reasons and while Nintendo has gotten a little bit better with fan-made content by actually leaving content like LPs, and reviews alone it's still not where it should be cause Nintendo still has a habit of striking down fan-projects which is something Sega now actually beats Nintendo in cause not only does Sega now a days actively and vocally support fan-made content sometimes it'll agree to foot the bill and help fan-projects become actual games which was how Sonic Mania became an official game.
Girly Changer If you want to try more sonic games I highly recommend Sonic Colors and Sonic 3 And Knuckles. My guilty pleasure sonic game is Sonic and the Black Knight, so I only recommend it as something interesting to check out rather than a great game, and Sonic Unleashed is also pretty good too. Sonic 2 is a fan favorite so I’d recommend it, although I personally find it really overrated, like seriously I’m pretty sure Sonic 2 was considered the greatest Sonic game in existence until Mania.
@@derrickhaggard fan makes mobile port of sonic 2 from scratch. gets hired fan makes remake of metroid 2, which has not happened at the point. cease and desist
Like I said if Sega does something better then Nintendo now a days it's actually being supportive of fan-made content. Again while Nintendo has gotten somewhat better by leaving LPs, and reviews alone. But still have a rage-inducing habit of striking down fan-projects, where as Sega actively supports fan-projects and on occasion like with Sonic Mania actively agrees to foot the bill and helps turn them into actual games. Meaning I could in theory make a fan-made SMT game, fan-made Sonic game, or fan-made Yakuza game and Sega would be actively and vocally supportive and if I get lucky Sega will agree to foot the bill and help said fan-made game become a real game.
I liked Sonic Unleashed... until I found out you need a certain number of medals to unlock levels. Getting the Moon medals was easy and fine, but the trouble is the Sun medals, where the aim of those daytime levels were to go F A S T ! Even if you tried to slow down you could easily miss the junction you needed or the medal itself, which left you with two options. 1: Die and hope you start up before the medal and/or junction. 2: Restart the level from the very beginning! And of course the levels get bigger the further into the game you go,which means you get more and more repetitive stuff happening and if you mess up, you’ve got further to go back
I actually owned a Game Gear for quite awhile... but my parents were very hesitant to let me play on it, mainly due to the fact that I needed to sleep at night for school (I was 13 and younger when I played this system... I believe) and they hated how it ate through all the double A batteries we owned. And since I couldn't reach the container they kept the batteries in, I had to basically beg them or scream at the top of my lungs so they could give me the batteries to play the game... Maybe it's a blessing in disguise that my Game Gear ended up kicking the bucket after getting drenched in water.
TBH, the Boom style fits Crash way more than Sonic. People only tolerate Boom now because we got used to it. That same fate is about to await Movie Sonic (from the trailer) - people rage for a while and then get used to it.
the reason PS2 dominated was the fact it had a DVD player, not it's library of games. If the PS2 didn't add that DVD player, the dream cast and the Gamecube wouldn't have anything to worry about. Surprisingly, the PS2 was the WEAKEST console durring that time.
Sega was the one who failed Rise of Lyric. Big Red Button made a game, but then Sega suddenly decided it would be a WiiU exclusive, which the engine they built the game with wouldn't work with. Big Red Button tried their best, but Sega forced them to scrap all their work and keep a tight deadline.

Oh my god the Sonic Shorts Reference
@@No_Sleepee Which is funny because that bit was a reference to the Sonic CD OVA, the official debut of Metal Sonic and...possibly the weirdest iteration of Sonic ever...and considering the existence of The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, that's saying a lot.
Yeah, they kind of missed the point hard...

If I have to pick 2 more fails from SEGA I would choose these ones:
- There's also some times SEGA develops IP's that are ONLY EXCLUSIVE to Japan for their consoles, that never see the light in the rest of the world; one of the big examples is the Sakura Wars series, a strategical game featuring mechs but also a date simulator, where you are the new commander of a secret army, disguised as a theatrical group, and you can choose which of the girls you want to have at the end of the game.
Didn't the latest Sakura Wars also get released in America?
@@KOkami03 The problem is that Sakura got turned into an action game.
Good list. The way how SEGA treats Sonic is just disgusting. Sonic is one of my childhood heroes and nostalgic icons along with pokemon and seeing what happened to it really is sad.

Someones been watching Gilbert and Sullivan. That or Freemans Mind. Maybe a fan of Mordin Solus character
Does Activision include Blizzard?
3? Lol

Luigi’s Sidekick Activision is only 3rd worst, first is Konami, then EA, and THEN Activision
@@reddeath5791 Well, out of the three they make the worst games. Actually, out of all the triple A companies they make the worst games.
That Sonic 06 serenade was just perfect
Sonic 06, Shadow the Hedgehog game, and Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric were the biggest mistake.
It’s not SEGA that makes a good Sonic game anymore. It’s the fans. Take Sonic Mania, for example.
Tominator 6 true
Honestly, Shadow the Hedgehog isn’t awful. It’s certainly not great, but I don’t think it deserves quite as much hate as it gets
And unleashed
@@tominator6684 heck one fan managed to make Forces better by putting in a Chaos 0 boss battle as an extra stage!
That alone should tell you how the fans know how to treat sonic better than sega.
Well...
For the most part.
Dude...
That ending was perfect!!!
Your dancing segments freaking killed me 🤣
1:18 *JOSH NO YOU KNOW THAT THE INTERNET WILL INTENTIONALLY TAKE THAT THE WRONG WAY*
The Activision Fails List is going to be more crowded with entries than BlizzCon would have attendees
That segment at the end... I'm feeling so goshdarn old. Is that a reference to the Season 3 finale of ReBoot?
The song in question is Modern Major General from The Pirates of Penzance. It's been used in a handful of other things too including Animaniacs and of course, ReBoot. (Glad to see someone else remembers that show!)
@@Aeoncalcos91 Yeah, I realized this after the fact and watching some coments, so yeah... I learned something new. I didn't know it was a song from an opera. My memories of the melody went with what I said, so... yeah.
Modern major general was also used in veggietales
Sonic Unleashed is a good game with both gameplay styles. Also you can like one style but not the other but the hole game is not bad.
The Ken Penders thing is more on Archie than Sega. The moral of the story is if you ever make a contract with someone, KEEP A COPY OF THE CONTRACT.
Josh, that remake of "I Am The Very Model of a Modern Major General" at Number 1 made my day. Thank you. :)
15:42 dont u mock honeybadgers those bastard will rip 2 shreds.
A Modern Major General homage to top things off? An exquisite finale Scorcher!
Oh dear god... looking at this again reminded me... Someone is actually making a hentai comic shipping Sonic and Elise...
That's Rule 34 for you... bringing some things we never thought anyone had the balls to make...
Pokemon is worse
From the Future, so this might be mean of me, but...

*Movie Sonic hands Josh a fork* "Eat your words... NOW!!!"
Okay, place your bets.
How many times for sonic, and which placement.
1, but it’s was basically every single one put into it
6:20 Josh, Sega of Japan was aware of the 32X, and the American division knew of the Saturn. *This was approved by Sega of Japan as a countermeasure to stop the Jaguar because the Saturn wouldn't arrive until a year later or so.*
Also, Gunstar Heroes is not a franchise that belongs to Sega. Yes, they published it, but Treasure is the owner of the IP.
There's... A rather bizarre reason Blaze was opting to kill Sonic:
*That Blaze was from a different Timeline.*
...I wish I was fucking kidding.
This one should’ve have been a special Top 50, cause lord know you’ll need all the slots for sega.
Nah for Activision
Let's not exaggerate, bro. 10 is well enough.
No. Out of all the video game companies that Josh made, SEGA is the least evil.
In the middle you will find Capcom, Sony and Microsoft. In between the middle and far right you will find Nintendo and Ubisoft (assholes) and on the far right you will find EA and Activision.
And on Mars you will find Konami
NIntendo: "F-Zero? What's that?"
"There's only Fox lel"
Me: "hey Nintendo we getting next Metroid game soon, or will you finally retire that series"
Nintendo: "we're working on prime 4"
Me: "shouldn't that one be out in late 2019?"
Nintendo: "do you want another federation force?"
Me: "I'll shut up now"
Uh...can someone show me the source for Big Red Button’s inclusion in Sonic Forces’ development? Cause I don’t seem to see anything about that online.
They didn’t work on sonic forces. It was the supervisor team that hired Big Red Button for Rise of lyric that played a hand in the making of Sonic Forces.
Dragon thunderX Right, that would make sense. I think he worded it really badly, saying that they were more involved than Sonic Team was.
Matthew Rubenstein Yeah, I’m all too familiar with Sonic Forces and the tactics they used.
@@dragonthunderx3250 So...who developed it then?
Brendan B based on what I’ve heard, it was three newcomers that didn’t have any experience in making a 3D sonic game.
That moment when joshscorcher mentions a real Shin Megami Tensei Game XD
18:24-20:37 That demonstration of accelerated linguistic output certainly emphasizes Josh's perspicacity.
More than 10 years later and the “Unleashed is only half good” excuse is pretty lame, just like Sonic Adventure 2 being “1/3 good”
It slowed the usually speedy gameplay to a halt, certainly doesn't really compare to the best the genre can offer(it has not a damn thing on Devil may Cry, bet on that) and is actually...undercooked in various aspects(such as performance, as I've seen MULTIPLE cases of slowdown, or music, where they didn't account for variety)
It's half baked and passable at best, but it's a good example of Sega trying to reinvent the whell and falling flat on their faces each time.
The "Modern Game Calamity" song is glorious. I was laughing so hard during it.
Josh probably had a lot of fun with the sonic 06 segment
15:54 I like the idea of the character, I do (Lore wise. It's kinda of interesting, although you could argue that Eggman is more so.), but the execution? It's just not good. It's as deep as a swimming pool.
I didn't expect a parody of The Pirates of Penzance as the finale to this video. Literally no one did. Well fucking played Josh.
"Raise your hand if you think the Stadia will succeed"

Josh, are you saving Nintendo for last in this series?
I got a feeling you are

I think all of Segas’ problems can be summed up with “sounds good on paper but terrible in practice”
The Pirates of Penzance parody at the end was both gold AND accurate.
10: A good idea into the future, but ahead of it’s time.
9: A good idea but awful battery and other problems.
8: Why don’t we get any new games or sequels to their old games?

Three words..."Highway of Death".
2:38 We sure have come a long way for 30 years after the original Game Boy.
You need to try out for a Gilbert and Sullivan opera, Mr. Scorcher.
Best ending for the fails ever! Also is the marriage happening next month? That would explain why the next fail is a month behind.
A quick question, where did you find your source on Big Red Button developing Sonic Forces?
We won't get an answer for that?
I loved the Sonic 06 song
17:05 Citation Please
The one I’ve been waiting for...
And the Nintendo one too
And for some one who’s started getting involved in sonic for over a year now
I’d say that the last couple of games were lacklustre at best (besides Sonic mania) and people can’t tell that the games were lacking soul and bit of heart and having less ideas with the character.
And don’t get me started on the horrors of Sonic 06 and/or Sonic boom: Rise Of lyric (even though I’ve never played it and probably never will)
The only games I’ve played so far were Team Sonic Racing, Sonic Forces And a bit of Sonic mania
And I’m looking forward to the new Mario and sonic Olympic game coming out soon
@@derrickhaggard fan makes mobile port of sonic 2 from scratch. gets hired
fan makes remake of metroid 2, which has not happened at the point. cease and desist
I recently got onto puyo puyo
I liked Sonic Unleashed... until I found out you need a certain number of medals to unlock levels. Getting the Moon medals was easy and fine, but the trouble is the Sun medals, where the aim of those daytime levels were to go F A S T ! Even if you tried to slow down you could easily miss the junction you needed or the medal itself, which left you with two options.
1: Die and hope you start up before the medal and/or junction.
2: Restart the level from the very beginning!
And of course the levels get bigger the further into the game you go,which means you get more and more repetitive stuff happening and if you mess up, you’ve got further to go back
On Wii, it's way more lenient.
@@ChiefMedicPururu I had it for xbox 360
I actually owned a Game Gear for quite awhile... but my parents were very hesitant to let me play on it, mainly due to the fact that I needed to sleep at night for school (I was 13 and younger when I played this system... I believe) and they hated how it ate through all the double A batteries we owned. And since I couldn't reach the container they kept the batteries in, I had to basically beg them or scream at the top of my lungs so they could give me the batteries to play the game...
Maybe it's a blessing in disguise that my Game Gear ended up kicking the bucket after getting drenched in water.
Me: "I actually like Knuckles, Sonic Boom design, can we bring it back?"
Sonic fans: "Boo!"
sonicepicmaster 2000 how about keep the Boom Knuckles design but retain his smarts?
sonicepicmaster 2000 Didn’t the Sonic X Echidnas in that flash back scene with Chaos look like they have a bit on muscle?
TBH, the Boom style fits Crash way more than Sonic. People only tolerate Boom now because we got used to it. That same fate is about to await Movie Sonic (from the trailer) - people rage for a while and then get used to it.
I actually got used to Knuckles’ Boom design after a while. And I actually like his character in the show a lot more than his canon persona.

I’m really looking forward to your top ten Nintendo fails joshscorcher
the reason PS2 dominated was the fact it had a DVD player, not it's library of games.
Well done on the parody of "Modern Major General".
