- The 'Tranz Alpine' is rightly regarded as one of the worlds best scenic train rides. Towering snow capped mountains, glacial rivers, gorges, valley, farms and fields, this train has it all.
The journey is aproximately 5 hours total, and takes you from Christchurch, on the south islands east coast, to Greymouth, on the west coast.
I have been lucky enough to ride this train 3 times, but on my most recent visit I also chased it from Christchurch to Greymouth and back, an all new and exciting experience. Being trackside gave a whole new perspective on the magical scenery you traverse on this trip.
