Epic TranzAlpine Scenic Train Ride (Christchurch to Greymouth) + Hokitika Gorge | New Zealand

- Опубліковано 8 кві 2022
- Seeing the South Island's stunning natural beauty via the TranzAlpine scenic train ride is an unforgettable experience. We finally did the TranzAlpine for the very first time thanks to the Great Journeys of New Zealand reaching out to us and sponsoring our trip.
The TranzAlpine is an awesome train journey that covers 223 kilometres (139 miles) one-way. The views are absolutely breathtaking. Experiencing the open carriage is a must and it takes just under 5 hours (one-way) meaning you could do a return trip in a day.
We chose to stay overnight in Greymouth which is in the wonderful West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand so that we could also visit Hokitika Gorge (another place that was on our NZ bucket list).

Coleraine Motel (Greymouth)

🚗 Other Transportation
We took a the number 29 bus from Christchurch airport to town (takes about 30 mins) and it was a 4 minute walk from Manchester St Super Stop to our accommodation (BreakFree on Cashel). We were pleased to learn that bus fares were half price til the end of June 2022.
In Greymouth we pre-booked a car rental with New Zealand Rent A Car, so picked up our keys on arrival at the i-SITE centre. As we did our booking quite last minute and opted for full insurance, we recommend researching around a bit with other car rentals as there could be cheaper options.

Hi! I was the young lady who served you at the Greymouth I-SITE gift shop. Was really looking forward to seeing this video. Wish you well in your future journeys!
Aw hello again! 😊👋 Awesome you found our video! ❤️🙌 Thank you for helping to confirm for us that day about the no ubers thing in Greymouth hahah it was so surprising to us and definitely a handy fact to share 🙂👍
Hello from Brazil!
I like your videos. I love you guys. I am from Sri Lanka .My age is 17. I am a boy. My favorite country is I'll be coming to New Zealand someday too. I've coming to work in New Zealand .We'll see you someday .You're happy, healthy ....😁💖💖💌
kiwi rail opening shot classic!!!
Thanks to the Great Journeys of NZ for a bunch of great footage we wouldn't be able to get on our own! 🙂👍
Hi from Florida, Be Safe.
Hello hello 👋😊
Peters food tasting descriptions reminds me of Emmy on the emmymade UA-cam. Hearty bites and vivid descriptions.
Yes! 👍👍 He's so good at describing the food ay 🤩🌯
Sandflie deterrent, essential addition in your backpack.🤭
It really is! We needed a stronger one though.. ours just wasn't off putting to them enough 🤣🤣
Can't resist a lamb shank 😋
Hahaha ended up eating lamb for 3 consecutive days... 🤤
The open carriage is very unique to me! It’s awesome! I’m ready for lamb shank! I remember the delicious one that Peter had at Mission Winery! No sand flies, please! Hope you were not bitten much by them! Great vlog!
You'll have to try it when you return to NZ Ray 😊👍 it's such a cool experience going out to the open carriage! Those sandflies though.. they were no joke seriously 😳
This throws me back to when I visited NZ back in 2010 and we drove through Arthur's Pass. What a stunning region it is...
Bert! We will be making an announcement in this week's video so sorry to ruin the surprise but we're heading over to your neck of the woods sort of. Coming to turkey 🇹🇷 😁 couldn't resist had to tell ya 😂
@@PeterandYen Wow, that's great for you guys! Turkey has got a lot to offer scenery wise. And I'm sure you'll see more of it than most European tourists, who just book package holidays and lounge by their hotel pool all day ;)
I wouldn't call it close to me, however, since it's still a couple of thousands of kilometers away ;)
What region are you visiting?
Hahaha NZ is so far away from places that to me Europe is all close to each other 😂
We're still planning the exact itinerary but we'll be in turkey for around 3 months spending long periods of time in istanbul and Cappadocia with shorter times in cities and towns in between.
@@PeterandYen and we Europeans are so used to having everything relatively close by that Turkey feels like the other side of the world ;)
Capadocia is beautiful from what I hear. Three months, wow, that's a long time! Will you also be hopping over to for example Greece or the Balkan?
Ahhh, yes: sand-flies. Such *precious* memories!
Hahaha I love the way you frame your comments Ged 😂
@@PeterandYen I was remembering all the precious *blood* they stole from me!
And now us too 🥲 we've all become victims of their blood thirst!
First off, glad Yen didn’t get motion sickness 🤢on the 🚂… 😊. Secondly, glad they had delicious lamb shanks on the train available at 9:30am because I agree with Peter…yes, when you’re on a train and you’ve got lamb shanks you gotta go for it (though the tandoori chicken wrap looked 👍👍 too - tandoori chicken wrap at 9:30am is ok?😜). Picked up some new slang.. pickish = hungry? The Shanghai scallion noodles and bing made me feel a little pickish…
Awesome views…and very very cool to have the open air car on the train… how cool is that!! Thanks for sharing guys!!! Great vid as always and hope Yen out ran those pesky sand flies 🤬🤬🤬 Safe travel guys!!
Go KZ!!
Hahahaha touche Hans! It seemed light in comparison to morning lamb shank hahaha 😂 we had both been up for quite a few hours by then plus daylight savings ended so our internal clocks were all over the place 🤣🤣
Lol close! Peckish 😁 meaning a bit hungry 🙂 might be a British slang that one 🤔 if we were going for kiwi slang it would've been "hungus" though that better describes Peter's appetite coz it means really hungry hahaha 😆
Unfortunately those damn sandflies got me 😅 one on my forehead and another on my cheek! Both ended up swelling up pretty big but luckily had my mopiko and antihistamines to bring it down 😅😅😅 Peter's bites always magically dissipate after a few hours!!
@@PeterandYen Had to look up sandflies... nasty little buggers... I read NZ has 13 species and only 2 bite humans..and only one, the West Coast black fly, is found on the South Island..and your forehead and cheek managed to find it 🦟 ....congrats??
Not haha but haha...my wife and I are the same way...her bites get super red and swollen and if I get bit, they subside pretty fast... I wonder if that's common between men and women 🤔
Maybe it is a male vs female thing with the reactions 🤣🤣 but yea I was like damn.. got me so bad 😂 Yea! There aren't a lot of places with those sandflies but the west coast has them a fair bit with the rivers and bushes where they breed.. plus it's the females that want your blood 🤣
Guess what Hans? We've booked our flights today! 🙌😁 We'll be going to Turkey in May 🥳
@@PeterandYen YESSSSSSS!! Peter told me this morning to which I responded - not sure my exact words, but yelled something like “SWEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!” In his ear😁😁😁… sounds like it’s going to be an amazing trip - with a dash of Jordan and Singapore sprinkled on top for flavor! Can’t wait for the vids!!! Told Peter if our paths cross somewhere on this planet, day in the life of P&Y video on me!! Safe safe travels and super duper kaluper stoked for the trip of a lifetime 🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷 🇯🇴 🇸🇬
Hahaha thank you! We'll see how we go and what we fit in! May just skip Singapore so we can have as much time in Turkey as possible since we're not there all that long. Sure do hope our paths will cross some time! 🤞😊 Am sure they will though.. just a matter of when!
A BRITISH RAILWAYS MECHANICAL ENGINEERS VISIT TO NZ - 1986.
As a Guest of the then NZGR in 1986, I was able to make a trip over the Lyttelton Harbour to Greymouth route in the cabs of various locos hauling freight trains. The only "passenger" train at the time was one operated for miners daily. But what stunned me was the incredible views and rampant "weathering" processes clearly visible at numerous locations, of which I have many photos.
So on my return to Wellington, I had a talk with the then Managing Director, and strongly urged him to consider running a "tourist train" over this route using coaching stock which should include roof windows to increase interior lighting & viewing !!!
So it's nice to see some film of the train I suggested in 1986. Which appears to to be just what I envisaged, and seems to be operating successfully for the benefit of not just tourists, but the current rail operator.
Good restaurant choice. I love this place however not many others seem to know about it sadly.
Thanks Evan 👍 always enjoy finding not so well known food joints.
I love your videos, you go to places I like or have never been. And I ADORE that the food is important, me too! Thanks for making them, much appreciated :)
Thanks for watching 😁✌️ glad you're enjoying our videos
Thankyou Peter and Yen for showing our beautiful country through the eyes of two beautiful Kiwi's. NZ diversity of landscapes is only surpassed by our diversity. I'm a 5th generation kiwi from European heritage, next time in Christchurch please come to our Thai Restaurant, Keo's opening soon. Walking distance from your Cashel St lodgings.
Hello hello. 👋 thanks for watching. We're always down for Thai food so if we're in the area we'll try and come 😊
I have watched many Tranzalpine videos over the years and yours is THE BEST yet. Your camera captures the colours brilliantly and the steam rising off the lamb shanks at 9:30 in the morning is something else ! The Great Journeys of New Zealand can be proud to have you as their ambassadors . My dream is to take my wife on this journey one day . Great video ☺️
Thanks Rex 😁👍 appreciate the kind words. Hope you will get the chance to bring your wife on this trip someday too maybe even grab a couple of morning lamb shanks together too 😂
It’s a great trip especially in august with snow
Would be so amazing with the snow ❄️🌨️🤩
We never knew about TranzAlpine train ride, it felt like somewhere in Europe with breathtaking views🤩😍 and oh my gosh all drone footages are awesome!!
It does feel like a scene out of a European alp train 🚆 😁
What a fabulous vlog! Another great adventure and glad to see you're getting sponsored at long last 😀.
Hahaha thanks mate 😂 we were pretty pumped to go on this ride felt like an adventure 🇳🇿
@@PeterandYen well done on surviving the sandflies guys. They really are maneaters ☠️. Definitely a train journey my wife and I need to do.
Top train system in New Zealand
Beautiful train
Hello Lucelia 👋 It is indeed! Such a fantastic train ride 🙂👍
Super video.!!!Thank you to both of you Peter & Yen.
Very good info!!! We definitely will like to do this train ride…last time we where in Christchurch we spend 2 weeks in MIQ
Ahh hopefully you can do this train ride next time, it's awesome 🤞🍀🙂
Consistently in the top ten great train journeys of the world... Can't wait to go. 🙂
Train journeys are such an awesome experience when you've got incredible scenery out your windows like this ay 🙂👍
@@PeterandYen 100% 🙂
Beautiful scenery captured perfectly, thanks for sharing guys 🤩👏🏾
No worries thank you for watching glad you enjoyed it 😊
I did it years ago in spring, it was a perfect sunny day with snow on the ground for much of the pass. Gorgeous!
That sounds absolutely stunning! 😍
Yes i agree September and early October is the best period. Snow is still down and the days are longer.
Loving that Charlie's Laundry mask! 10/10. Kind of making us a little homesick... UGH. THANKS GUYS. 🥰
It's a great mask 👍🙂 maybe time for a lil visit back to NZ? 😁
Great video. Did the train journey a few years ago and agree with your summary. Only recently visited Hokitika Gorge, while on a cycle tour, and was amazed at this hidden gem.
Thanks Robin glad you enjoyed it 😁🤙
What an awesome video! Makes me want to go on Tranzalpine train 😍😍😍 seats look super comfortable!
💯 super comfy, glad you enjoyed the video 😁
Wow I feel like you guys pulled out all the stops for this video, two food vlogs, that epic train ride, the flight and braving all those sand flies lol! You guys deserve an award, I'm a creator too and I know how incredibly hard it is to create the type of content you guys create with the consistency that you do so kudos to the both of you and keep up the amazing work.
Hahaha thanks bro appreciate the props. It was pretty tight getting all this ready on time but lucky we have quite a few years experience doing this now so it all came together in the end 😁👍
@@PeterandYen Yup it really came out amazing, your experience shows for sure, looking forward to next weeks episode already!
love how you both include the food tasting! Really adds to the vid. 😊
Thanks Carolyn 😁 always enjoy the Kai. Have a great Sunday ✌️
Such EPIC!!!
Such MAJESTIC VIEWS!! 😍🥰🇳🇿✨
Cant believe you went there guys!
So beautiful! I cant even describe how amazing that place is.... 🇳🇿
Kudos guys!!👍
Thanks Peter & Yen! 😎💖✨
Thanks Nikki! Imagine it in winter with all the snow on the mountains 😍 bet it would look even more amazing! Hope you get the chance to experience it some day too 🙂
Wow, such a great video! Thanks for sharing. Must add this to my bucket list.
Hiya Wrigley 👋 Hope you've been well! Yes definitely do the ride if you get the chance.. maybe in winter with all the snow ❄️🗻😉
Looks lovely! We have almost watched all your videos from here in NZ. We will have to start on your overseas ones soon! Such lovely, fun and upbeat people.... By far our favorite channel to follow here on UA-cam. 🙂
You're too kind thank you for the lovely message glad you're enjoying the videos ❤️
Thanks for another cool video .Love the drone footage .
What an epic ride was that! Just found ur channel, which is quite remarkable and happy! Love u guys! 💖
Hello thank you glad you enjoyed the video 😁🤙
breathtaking views
💯 so beautiful 🤩
The scenery is breathtaking, the open carriage a lot of fresh air, can’t go wrong there, and the Scenic Cafe to warm us up. Will plan the TranzAlpine 🚞 Ride from Greymouth to Christchurch now that the borders are open for some of us from 2nd May 😅. Thank you both for another virtual holiday for us outside of NZ, not for long though 😆🤪
😁 no worries! When you do go on your trip be sure to tell us all about it. Sounds like you're going to be in for an amazing adventure 😯
Brilliant 👌Thanks for sharing ❤️🇳🇿
Another wonderful video. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching 🙂
Wow beautiful scenery! Im always south island biased 😁
Love how you two always describe food so well almost like i can smell and taste it from my end 😸
Hahaha thank you and we feel the same about the scenery! Such beautiful and captivating views.. can't get enough of it 🥰
It’s such a shame that they’ve stopped running the steam train later in the year. That was always an amazing spectacle, especially with snow in the background 👌 Need to do this trip in winter!! ❄️
Ooo the steam trains would look so picturesque with the snowy backdrop! This Tranzalpine would be incredible in winter for sure 🤩
There hasn't been a steam train to Arthur's Pass since before 2013 there was a heritage train trip to Arthur's Pass in April this year. There are no mainline steam operations in the South Island and hasn't been for a few years it will happen again but who knows when.
Hokitika Gorge is beautiful. You should try Blue pool between Haast and Wanaka. It is similar view but there is no sandflies and you can have a dip over there. There is plenty of parking over there as well.
That sounds awesome! We went past it last time but didn't have enough time to stop unfortunately. Gotta go back one day 🤞🙂
Lake Mathieson between Fox and Franz Joseph Glacier is brilliant also
Thank you for sharing this video. Now I know my activity this coming June 👏❤😎
No worries thanks for watching and hope you have an awesome trip 👍
We loved the train! Such a relaxing but amazing way to travel across the island. You guys captured it so well!
Thanks Leah! Was it busy when you guys went? Such awesome views ay!
@@PeterandYen it was not busy. Which was sad! But good for us because we got to do so many cool things and be the only people there.
Loved your video thanks for sharing :)
Epic is not the word to describe this journey ! I've traveled up and down the Nth Island between Hamilton and Wellington many times by train, but this Tranz Alpine train journey is definitely on my bucket list, and watched many videos of this train trip, but yours is the best. You two brought your A game to this one,and once again, watching you guys eat,has brought on my hunger pangs again - even though I just had bacon and eggs for me dinner...awesome upload guys
Thank you for the kind words Rob! 😊 Scenic train rides are great and this TranzAlpine one was awesome 👍 Definitely make the trip if you get the chance.. the open carriage is really unique and cool 🙂 hahaha it was a double eating vlog this one 😁✌️ bacon and eggs for dinner though.. yum!! 😋👍🥓🍳 Hope you've been having a sweet long weekend
@@PeterandYen you cannot beat bacon and eggs (speaking of which I'm cooking right now),and for real, that Tranz Alpine trip is a must do. I've had an extra long weekend as the boss gave us the option on Wednesday to take Thursday off - so those of us who aren't motivated took that opportunity - haha ! You guys need to do a vlog on just you two eating - warn us first, you know how that subconsciously makes people hungry - cheers
Amazing guys
Thanks mate 🤙
Such a beautiful train ride. I took the trip a few years ago, and also spent most of my time in the outdoor carriage. I'm showing this to my little daughter now, and she's fascinated by it.
Such a great train ride isn't it 🙂 which season did you go in? Hopefully you'll be able to go again some day with your daughter 😊
@@PeterandYen I went in September I think it was, and so everything was bright green. It was raining but that seemed to make everything prettier.
Amazing footage guys, very inspiring. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching glad you enjoyed it 😊
@@PeterandYen Did you go one way or return because I was wondering how much it was for you guys since its $744 from Christchurch to Greymouth and return.
The TranzAlpine is my local train, and I've wanted for a long time to see a good travel vlog about it, as I have never had the chance to take the journey myself.
This is a wonderful video, I really enjoyed it.
We have this booked next month for my birthday. Taking my mum and Dad, really looking forward to it.
How awesome! Hope you have a wonderful time.. it'll be such a memorable trip ☺️
You two are wonderful!! Lovely camera shots..and you are so natural. LOVED the Tranz Alpine train trip which I did with my daughter in Jan 2020 but from Greymouth to Christchurch. This time train tickets booked for Valentine's Day 2023 Greymouth to Christchurch with my husband this time. Looking forward to it. Hokitika looks wonderful. Only spent time on the beach last time so have the Gorge on my "to see" list! Thanks guys!!
Thank you for your kind words! ☺️🙏❤️ It is a gorgeous and special ride isn't it? Hope you have a wonderful journey with your hubby! Don't forget to pack insect repellent and cover up if you're going to the gorge 😆 those sandflies are vicious 😂😂
I have been on that train and its without a doubt a beautiful train journey
We believe a lot more businesses should sponsor you😆 This is really excellent video, felt like we were with you 😘
This worked well since we wanted to go on this journey too so it was a great fit 😁
The train trip looks like so much fun, the open carriage is such a great idea and I can't believe that they are literally serving lamb shanks on the train 😃Looks like you guys went at the perfect time since the train wasn't busy at all!
Thanks guys it was an awesome adventure 😁 borders between Australia and New Zealand open today so things will be a lot busier now.
Classic! Need to do this one, looks great! Lamb shanks at 9.30am 🤣
Hahaha ended up eating lamb for three consecutive days we were down for the trip... glorious 🤤
Thanks for the video, its very nice & informative
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it 🙂🚆⛰️
lmao the sand flies part really cracked me up 🤣. Thank you guys for always bringing us the most authentic content. Love it !
Those suckers were no joke 😅😅 we got eaten alive 🤣
Loved it!
Itravelled on the train in winter and that was great with snow in Arthur's pass 👌
Bet that would look amazing 🤩
Great video, thank you
Love the video guys!!! 💗
Thank you! 😊🙌
You pronounce Maaori so beautifully, thank you❤
Thanks Bronwyn ❤️
Looks epic guys. That scenery is just stunning through there. Nice one!
Thank you! It was awesome 😊 have you guys been on it before? Love the south island ay.. just so beautiful everywhere 🥰
@@PeterandYen never done it but would love to 🙌
Maybe try a winter trip! It looks incredible with all the snow from the photos we've seen ❄️🗻🏔️😁
Such lovely and cute young couple! Very excited to try this myself. Im subscribing to your channel too! More power!
Thank you so much and welcome to our channel 😊🙌
I took the Tranzalpine a few years ago, but there was a land slide so the train had to stop at Arthur's pass and couldn't go to Greymouth. We pre-booked a car and drove up to Punakaiki and a few places on our way to nelson where we flew back to Auckland.
Beautiful scenery, great footage as always, and fun to watch. This video will encourage more people to take the trip to enjoy the experience.
It was an amazing experience 😁👍 glad you enjoyed the video
Been wanting to try this train ride but never got down to it. The lamb shank looks gorgeous!
Hopefully you'll get a chance in a future, looks super cool in winter too ❄😯
I took my Mum on that train ride. Well worth the money if you can fit it in your budget.
Awesome vlog guys! Longer than usual but it’s really nice to see something a bit different than your usual vlog. We love unique train ride like this 😍
We wish to do scenic train ride too and one of those overnight train rides here in Australia one day.
Look at those views during the ride, everything looks so picturesque!! 😍
Hahhaa lamb shank for breakfast, can’t go wrong with that especially in this special ocassion 😁
Lol those sand flies are so annoying, aren’t they 😅
Thanks guys! You should totally do the Australia one.. then come to NZ and do the TranzAlpine too hahaha 🤣👍 thankfully there aren't many sandflies pockets throughout NZ, they're just particular bad in the west coast and a few other areas where they bite 🥲
Another really great video Peter and Yen. Thank you for sharing. The TranzAlpine is a beautiful trip and as some others have said if you get the chance. It is well worth doing during winter, it is stunning!. The other good thing is for what is offered, compared to lots of other attractions it is reasonably priced and worth it. Keep safe and well :)
Thanks Greg! Glad you enjoyed it and yes! Can only imagine how magical it must look in winter with all the snow 😍❄️ It is such a great scenic ride.. train rides are awesome 👍 Happy long weekend!
@@PeterandYen Thank you for your wishes and the same for you both too!!!. hehehe yeah, agree there is something about train rides...... sadly the rail network generally has been allowed to rundown and most of the original tracks are no longer there. Did you ever go on the Southerner when it was running? One thing should note too for the TranzAlpine which some of your viewers may not be aware of. And that is you are not limited to getting on or off the train at Greymouth or Christchurch. You can join the train or exit the train at several locations. For example a lot of ppl used to catch it at Rolleston (Opposite the BP Petrol Station) and especially if was coming from the South as meant did not have to drive through Christchurch itself.
No we never had the chance to go on the Southerner unfortunately.. what was its route? And yes! Very good point about how you can enter on and/or exit off at any of the other stations along the way.. some of the stops looked really nice 🙂 There must be so much just waiting to be explored at each place! 👍
@@PeterandYen The Southerner used to run between Christchurch and Invercargill with lots of stops along the way as you can imagine. It was a long trip but a very enjoyable one. It is like Rabbits. They say for every one you see, you have missed the other 9.... For every location or site you know of there is how many "hidden" gems waiting to be explored. Some though in all fairness are not easy to get too and some require 4x4 access and even then not during winter.... but yes, there is a lot of beauty and we do not have to travel to other countries. It is right on our very own doorstep. Hope that your long weekend is going very well for you both :) Keep safe.
In each station, any restriction to carry home food ,this doubles the memories, I guess
Looks amazing, guys!
Cheers Lin! It was so cool 😊
Omg the cinematics!!!! 😍😍😍 Peter and his dad jokes/pun 🤣 love the mini hotel, for that price, it's still cheaper than Japan! The train looks great, and that huge window to see the view outside, love it!!! 😍😍😍 Better leg room than my flight 😂 omg are those sheepies outside??!! I love the open area, and that canteen too!! Wow the lamb shank is making me salivate 😆 I don't see any mess to your hair Yen, you're doing a hair commercial I'm sure 🤭 the turquoise water is incredible 😍 goshhhh thanks for bearing with the sandflies for the vlogs and amazing shots! You guys beautifully showcase New Zealand beauty, this video is sooo beautifully shot and edited, we loved every moment of it, felt like we're on a journey with you guys!! Also congrats on the sponsorship, can't say enough how amazing this video is!!! 😍😍😍
Haha yes! We passed a lot of farmlands so lots of sheep zipping by 🙂 loll thanks re my hair but it was really tangled after that hahaha worth it though 💯 Thank you guys! ❤️❤️ The Great Journeys of NZ were an awesome sponsor 😊👍
Oh wow already I'm excited to see this video from the opening clips! Wish you had included more flight footage too! Hey yeah of course you wouldn't need the usual rental car as next day you'll on the train! Yeah nice accommodation and always great to see the range of accommodation you have so others travelling and when fortress New Zealand is fully open to international tourists they can see too! Outstanding price too and ah Peter always thinking about food! Food did look good, I would have gone for maybe a good steak or something! On the train, well at time of booking are you able to choose the seats? Or are you given what they allocate? Yeah that train and the views look stunning there and amazing facilities on there too with the open and cafe carriage too! Wow lamb shank is good any time of the day Yen! Haha! Glad you mentioned the duration of the train journey most helpful! Going through the gorge was so cool too, I bet Yen was happy it was a short walk! Yeah heck those mosquitoes there, crazy! Was a stunning job on this video!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video 👍🙂 it was an awesome train ride and mini getaway. I believe seats get allocated to you on booking but you can contact them with a request and they will try to accommodate if it's possible. Yea those sandflies were relentless! Glad we made our escape 😆
@@PeterandYen Ah yeah thanks for the information and I will take that into account! Sandflies definitely relentless! Keep up the fine work you guys!
We went on the trans alpine. We went from Greymouth to Christchurch in the afternoon. They had run out of food, they don't restock. Had to keep the car in the warehouse carpark and hope for the best . Mainly go through farmland. I was disappointed for the cost.
Love this video
good one, keep posting
letsgoooooooooooo
Awesome...very professional.
Thank you ✌️
Another wonderful video. Thank you guys very much! Any plans to write a book or ebook one day on travels in New Zealand? 🤗💜
Thanks Marylyn 😁🤙 Yen is more the writer between us two. I love to read but I'm no writer. Yen used to proof read my essays at uni and often noticed I didn't even compete sentences 😂
@@PeterandYen She's a sweetheart. 🤗
Lake Brunner north of Greymouth is nice to go to, some nice Lakes in the Hokitika region as well
Ooo nice thanks for the recommendation will try and visit next time we're in the area 🤙
Very useful.
Good train ride in NZ !
I (helmi) always covered up like Yen too coz sand flies or mosquitos will attack me😂
Hahaha 😂 you and Yen need to keep nick and I safe
good vlogs, some day i can journey this country
Thanks glad you enjoyed it. Hope you get to travel around NZ soon 😁🇳🇿👍
I enjoy that train ride
😁👍 🚆 🚉 🚄 🚋 🚈
Nice Place of heaven Newzealand 🥰
💯🇳🇿❤️
I use to hike a lot, a clue is if you're going into sandfly country, take half a teaspoon of kerosene for 3 days prior. Obviously with food and beverage. It comes out on your perspiration and sandflies hate it!
Oooo really Kerosene? Haven't heard that tip before thank you
#denniston is in my town.. fantastic that you have been here
Good spot to go to between Greymouth and Westport is the blowholes which is halfway between Greymouth and Westport, Reefton about 1 hour north of Greymouth was the first place in New Zealand to get Electricity Going 1st August 1888,
Punakaiki is an awesome spot. We had a great time making a vlog from there too 😁👍
Not going to lie, I would also get the lamb shank in the morning. Digging the sweet views from the train.
It's the only way to go 🤣👍
This is great guys. So good that u guys finally doing partnership with brands. I was wondering when it's going to happen 🤣. The train ride look awesome, it does remind me of train ride in Japan but going a bit slower
😀. I think I have been to Hokitika gorge before cannot remember but I did add that on my list to revisit.
😁 this partnership was great since Yen and I have always wanted to go on this ride so we were both excited to work together. Hokitika Gorge was the perfect icing on the cake 🎂 🥮 😁
@@PeterandYen is it close to Hokitika town? I seriously wanna go back to that Indian restaurant and have their chai latte again. The last time we've there they ran out of chai tea 😭
Think it's about a half hour drive from the town so not far :)
@@PeterandYen lol. We are currently travelling so to take the car for repair is a challenge sometimes 😅
Wonderful video! We will be taking this train ride in April this year. Can't wait !! Do you know if there is a way to return to Christchurch from Greymouth on the same day, without having to take the train back? The timings don't seem to work for the bus options that show up online for Greymouth -> Christchurch !
Thanks glad you enjoyed it 😁 hmm only other way is probably car rental to get back to chch on your own time. The car rental place is basically at the train station when you arrive in Greymouth but best to Google your options and book in advance. Good luck and hope you have a great time!
Lol I stayed at breakfree it was pretty sweet value and also the breakfast is very good
It is a good value stay in a convenient location. We didn't try their breakfast there but had dinner there one night.. no surprises... Peter had the lamb shank 🤣👍
good video
Greymouth was staying at the Camping Park . & it rained like 7 inches in a few hours . Everybody ended up the kitchen cabin.
O my gosh that's the west coast for you... we were so lucky to get 2 sunny days in a row
Peter, how did you take the video of the train and the surrounding ?
Did you fly a drone from the moving train and take back the drone from the moving train ??
That would require some insane piloting skills hahaha 🤣 but nah the drone footage is thanks to Great Journeys of NZ letting us use it for our video. You can't drone in mostn parts of the south island without a special permit and definitely not in those areas the train went through without going through a lot of hassles.. and also it wouldn't be possible during the train ride either as there's only one stop during the journey that you get a very short break off the train so thankfully Great Journeys of NZ had awesome footage to let us use since they're the tourism division of Kiwirail (an NZ SOE) and sponsored our trip 👍🙂
I mean this with respect...
What an amazing female Yen is. She's like a Sunrise.
Hiya 👋 Yen here! That is incredibly sweet of you to say, thank you 😊
