The last note is sustained for longer in both 1994 performances.

It isn’t just about the language differences but also about the interpretation of the song. This song was written in 1957 and interpreted by Jacques Brel, a successful Belgian singer. He often conveyed melancholy. This song requires restraint which Celine Dion masterfully shows throughout aside from the end which she approaches in a more climactic way. Her ability to control her power and volume is part of what makes her such an incredible interpreter.

This is probably one of the most beautiful French songs. Her version is incredible.

This was at the end of the show, which is why it was reserved (for her). There are other audio recordings of this where she tears it up. The song in English is called ‘If We Only Have Love’. The French language original is basically an anthem for peace, on the scale of Whitney’s ‘I Will Always Love You’, for comparison.

This was first sang by Édith Piaf many many years ago. Céline sings it with grace and power. To me, the french language is the best when it comes to singing. 😊😊😊

Edith Piaf never sang that song. It was the Belgian singer/writer Jacques Brel, who also wrote it.

@@lg1799 I did a little search and couldn't find anything on Piaf singing this song. This song was written and performed first by Jacques Brel in 1956, Piaf died in 1963 so she could have sung the song, but she wasn't the first to sing it

This is a French Song Sung by Celine. I think this performance was at the very beginning of her run in Vegas
It is very emotional as you will see by her reaction. I am including the words in both languages
    Ne me quitte pas
    Il faut oublier
    Tout peut s'oublier
    Qui s'enfuit déjà
    Oublier le temps
    Des malentendus
    Et le temps perdu
    A savoir comment
    Oublier ces heures
    Qui tuaient parfois
    A coups de pourquoi
    Le cœur du bonheur
    Ne me quitte pas
    Ne me quitte pas
    Ne me quitte pas
    Ne me quitte pas
    Moi je t'offrirai
    Des perles de pluie
    Venues de pays
    Où il ne pleut pas
    Je creuserai la terre
    Jusqu'après ma mort
    Pour couvrir ton corps
    D'or et de lumière
    Je ferai un domaine
    Où l'amour sera roi
    Où l'amour sera loi
    Où tu seras reine
    Ne me quitte pas
    Ne me quitte pas
    Ne me quitte pas
    Ne me quitte pas
    Ne me quitte pas
    Je t'inventerai
    Des mots insensés
    Que tu comprendras
    Je te parlerai
    De ces amants-là
    Qui ont vu deux fois
    Leurs cœurs s'embraser
    Je te raconterai
    L'histoire de ce roi
    Mort de n'avoir pas
    Pu te rencontrer
    Ne me quitte pas
    Ne me quitte pas
    Ne me quitte pas
    Ne me quitte pas
    On a vu souvent
    Rejaillir le feu
    D'un ancien volcan
    Qu'on croyait trop vieux
    Il est paraît-il
    Des terres brûlées
    Donnant plus de blé
    Qu'un meilleur avril
    Et quand vient le soir
    Pour qu'un ciel flamboie
    Le rouge et le noir
    Ne s'épousent-ils pas
    Ne me quitte pas
    Ne me quitte pas
    Ne me quitte pas
    Ne me quitte pas
    Ne me quitte pas
    Je ne vais plus pleurer
    Je ne vais plus parler
    Je me cacherai là
    A te regarder
    Danser et sourire
    Et à t'écouter
    Chanter et puis rire
    Laisse-moi devenir
    L'ombre de ton ombre
    L'ombre de ta main
    L'ombre de ton chien
    Ne me quitte pas
    Ne me quitte pas
    Ne me quitte pas
    Ne me quitte pas.
    Do not leave me now
    We must just forget
    Yes, we can forget
    All that’s flown beyond
    Let’s forget the time
    The misunderstands
    And the wasted time
    To find out how
    To forget these hours
    Which sometimes kill
    The blows of why,
    A heart full of joy.
    Do not leave me now
    Do not leave me now
    Do not leave me now
    Do not leave me now
    I offer you
    Pearls of rain
    Coming from the lands
    Where it never rains
    I will cross the world
    Till after my death
    To cover your bosom
    With gold and light
    I will make a kingdom
    where love will be king
Where love will be the law
    Where you will be queen
    Do not leave me now
    Do not leave me now
    Do not leave me now
    Do not leave me now
    Do not leave me now,
    Will invent for you
    The insane words
    That you’ll understand
    And I will tell you
    Of these lovers who
    Were seen twice
    With their hearts in blaze
    I will say in detail
    The story of this king
    Dead, from having not
    Encountered you.
    Do not leave me now
    Do not leave me now
    Do not leave me now
    Do not leave me now
    One often recalls
    Flames light anew
    From an old volcano
    Thought to be too old.
    It appears that
    The scorched fields
    Can give more corn
    Than the best of springs.
    And when evening comes
    In this blazing sky
    The red and the night
    Marry nevermore.
    Do not leave me now
    Do not leave me now
    Do not leave me now
    Do not leave me now
    Do not leave me now
    I will cry no more
    I will talk no more
    Will hide somehow
    Just to look at you
    Dance and smile
    And to hear you
    Sing and then laugh
    Let me be for you
    The shadow of your shadow
    The shadow of your hand
    The shadow of your dog
    Do not leave me now
    Do not leave me now
    Do not leave me now
    Do not leave me now

The best performance of this song and the most famous version in the francophone world is her 1994 or 1995 duet with Mauranne. She raised the key at the end and her voice was soaring.

Just found your reaction to this beautiful song. Thank you! When there was a tribute to the Bataclan victim, they had Céline sing Edith Piaf's L'Hymne à L'Amour and I always thought they had chosen the wrong song. That song is about the love of a woman for a man. Quand On A Que L'Amour is all about love conquering hate, beauty conquering ugliness, peace conquering war, etc. Much more appropriate for the tribute I always thought.

I find the title pretty much explains the whole song...when all you have left is love...she is living each word, she's a bit in agony that's why she restrained herself during almost the whole song then let's it all out at the end. ( and yes you reacted to that song a few years ago but who would complain 😉

I've been loving your Celine reactions, as well as your selections of her performances.
I am sharing with you one of the hidden jewls, an incredible live performance, when she was receiving an award for her late husband.
I would be thrilled to see your reaction. But in order to understand the song, please watch first the song's author singing it, with English translation. ua-cam.com/video/7Cy6p_48QDo/v-deo.html
After that, just play Celine Dion Avec le temps. You will be coming back to this performance in a years to come, trust me :)
