Not everyone can hear that level of flat/pitchy. She's not out of tune enough to be off key.. it just sounds like she's tired and didn't quite reach the note sometimes. For me it doesn't ruin the song at all anyway. I like that it's 100% live!

Celine was going through the most difficult time in her life, her husband died in the beginning of the next year and was suffering a lot... Clearly it reflected in her voice. But what I admire in Celine is her passion and feeling when she sings. Even with all the bad things happening with her family, she gave her best in this tribute. And as her husband whished, she returned to the stages and continued doing shows, because she knew that by doing it, she would be honoring his memory all the things they conquered together. She is beyond amazing... She's a strong woman, and an extraordinary human being.
I have to agree that this one is not one of her best performances but NOBODY can come close in emotion, voice, quality! Come on! She is the incredilble CELINE DION!

No matter what people say, honestly, this isn't one of the best vocal performances of the Queen. BUT this sure is one of the most emotional ones. The lyrics and the circumstances of this performance is testament to that. One should just check out the translated lyrics of this song, if they don't understand the lyrics in French, then they will understand what this means to her. Definitely not flawless vocally but flawless and raw emotionally. I absolutely adore this performance of her and can't hold back tears whenever I see it.
What I love the most about Céline Dion, other than her epic vocals, of course ☺, is that she has always walked her own path in show buisness. Vocals on point, from day one, still you don't hear as much of her music played on the radio. she's been giving classic performances her entire life. It says something about society and has nothing to do with her talent, which has ALWAYS been there. Seems that she is just now being appreciated for the outstanding gift she is.
Clearly this is not vocally perfect. You can sense mucus draining in her throat when she belts the high notes. But for me, this is still one of her best performances. This was emotional and powerful... beautifully raw.

This is one of my favorite performances. I know it's not perfect, the voice is a bit hoarse because of the emotion, but I love this live because it's so emotional and I can feel her pain for the tragedy of Paris and the illness of his beloved housband.

Thank you for focusing on what really mattered... the power in her voice, the clarity, resonance, and precision. Even though she wasn't 100% on key (she herself commented that she couldn't hear herself and the orchestra - kudos for continuing with the amazing tribute anyway) it was still beautiful... raw as you said. Ths again showed that she is a vocal legend... Edith would be proud.
Loved the performance. There was raspy parts but it made it so raw and true! Such a difficult song to sing and she nailed it and even made it changed the song a bit at the end making it more difficult if you compare with original singer.

a few high notes were off key which is unusual for Celine. She may have add some vocal issues on that day. Nonetheless it was a wonderful emotionnal performance. As a french canadian myself, I could feel that the emotion was there in her voice and in the lyrics and it was a good performance. Celine is in a league of her own even when she does not feel 100% vocally.
Just the Voice you are always so nice and look for positive things to focus on... I am a huge Céline Fan.... and I was the 1st to say that this was not one of her better vocal performances! AMA & Celine seem to have a history of bad sound... she was off key almost like she could not hear the orchestra... her voice sounded tired yet you are so gracious knowing she is more than that 1 performance... she still had people crying as I think people felt her raw emotions more than pretty notes... All that aside... it was a very hard time in her life when her husband was dying and wanted her to go on singing... I cannot imagine what was going through her mind singing in her native French about "if life tears you away from me" an Ode to Love knowing her great love was slowly leaving... Equestrian Sofia... after re-listening to this it seem pretty clear to me that it is a sound issue almost like Céline is singing in tone in a different key??? She is human and those shows are crazy... remember the time she sang "dance with My Father" and the Grammy and her mic was not working... then they gave her a mic and her monitors were not working and she sang ON KEY next to the piano without monitors... Anyway, I enjoy Just The Voice's reaction and he is always so diplomatic and positive and I love seeing "younger" people enjoy music I have known for a long time... I 1st met Céline when she was 19yo ... I was student and friends of mine were dancing for her and I remember telling EVERYONE that if she was well managed she would be the biggest star... the girl can sing anything and "gets"it it is truly a musical gift...
The clarity wasn't there, and yes---her voice was on the tired side...contextualized (her personal life at the time and the event at hand) it is more than expected and honestly the diminished clarity added a layer of raw emotion that cannot be entirely captured by a more angelic/clear rendition.
Excuse me the clarity isn't there? Can't you hear how clear her voice was??? This rawness on her voice and some fluctuations added to how beautiful the end result of this tribute was. Sometimes the little flaws contributes to the perfection and this is one example of it.
First of all, it is amazing that nobody tell this song was sang by Edith Piaf. And Edith Piaf sang songs with very deep meanings. The song tell a story of a woman ready to do everything he would ask her ...and when the song say ''If life tears you from me'', wich is in french ''si la vie t'arrache à moi'', she was EXACTLY it in her personnal life while she was singing it!. PLUS, she has been asked to sing this french song when France was traumatised by a kind of kamikas who killed many people in the city of Nice in France. If you add that she is french speaking understaning very well the french culture, so understanding the song that is dramatic in itself, this performance was very tough to deliver. In fact, it was not a usual show she knows by heart in details. The french people could't whish a better tribute. They exactly know the entire meaning there was in this performance. Believe me it was huge. It required a lot, a lot, of energy (considering all circomstances) to sing that song without crying while singing. It required a lot of energy and courage physically and mentally. I personnaly was very impressed by the performance she delivered by singing this tough song and knowing what she was living by loosing René in the same time. The moment was seriously dramatic. It was not lonly a matter of performance, it was about something much deeper. More than that, don't forget she did the same when a guy killed some people in Las Vegas, she forgets nobody. well i for one would like to sayto the fans who made these awful comments about Celine.If your truely a fan of Celine Dion you would always remain true to her. Even if you didn't like her performance. True love for someone would be to uplift her in Her hard times not down her when she is sad,distraught,upset,crying,vocallysick,technically abscurd, It doesn't matter why the possibility of not being 100 percent to you but you never write publicly about how she is performing unless you were actually with her and really knew why she was not to your 100 percent. This was the time period where her voice might've been at its worst in her entire career. Her husband was sooooo sick at this point and her voice was showing the mental and physical exhaustion she was dealing with.
This was in November of 2015 and her husband died in January 2016. I can imagine that she was extremely tired and emotional. Rare Time that Céline miss the musical note.....we have to be Honest...she wasnt..right on the spot... she did it anyway...and probably she didnt whant to sing .it..she was off stage because if René health...i love her anyway
It's a terrible/stressful experience when you can't hear yourself while singing live due to the earpiece not working and you can't even tell where you are at in the song as you only hear a bunch of noise and echo, instead of a melody, because you have the speakers all around you. Not even including the fact she was sleep deprived and overwelmed emotionally at that precise time of her life, yet did not want to let the people of France down and accepted to sing anyway. I admire her strength and control in such a difficult time, on top of performing with those technical problems and only relying on the memory of the melody as a guide. She's a Master in the art of live performances.

A little sorry behind that performance: she got sick for a week. Her earphones did not work so she cannot hear herself which is very annoying. Still and always professional and she nailed it !
I'm a big fan but this night, Celine must have been sick. She sings flat, and it's not usual for her. For me it has nothing to do with her "being too emotional" (she proved already so many times that she can handle the good singing with being emotional, even when she lost her dad, she cried but she hit the right notes.) I really think she was sick, because she had the same "flat singing problem" with the courage tour last year.
That night, I'm 100% sure she had earplugs problem, and THAT is the only reason she sounded flat (on the original she sounded even more flat). Don't put it on the count of emotions... I follow her since 1983 (yes, she sings in french since that long) and I remember her singing after her niece just died, after her daddy died, after her brother died and even later after René died and she always sounded right. so, for me, emotions are not responsible for her to sound off key that night. She's used to manage and deal with strong emotions. for me, it's more a technical dysfunction with earplugs.
I think this recording might've even been a bit touched up. Before the professional version showed up, the cellphone videos sounded even flatter. But keep in mind, her husband wasn't far from dying at that point. Less than half a year later. He died in January 2016 and this performance was in the later half of 2015.
razrv3lc She wasn't grieving at this time because of her husband Rene's suffering... she was grieving because of what went down in Paris... she probably spent the entire tribute before her performance crying her eyes out... as soon as you get that golf ball in your throat it affects your singing big time
yeah i remember this performance being flat - i cant remember why now coz she just isnt flat. i think there was a sound issue at the time or she got the wrong key or something but yeah its off. it kinda lends itself to the style of the song.

I hate to criticize Celine b/c she is such an icon, and so tragically lost her husband far too soon, but she was off-key and flat in this performance. It shows that she does not have perfect pitch like Lara Fabian and Jackie Evancho do. She should have had floor monitors in front of her so she could hear the correct pitches of the notes. But she is still one of my favorite singers.
This was after the terrorist attack, watch the video in the background and the crowd. Singing with that much emotion in you is hard as hell and Lara or anyone else would struggle as well (and I am a huge fan of Lara, this is just the reality of this moment). If there were sound issues as some have mentioned then it's even more amazing, but I think it was all the emotion. It's hard to get sounds out let alone sing. That's what makes this perfect.

Je sais ce que c'est que de chanter ''live'' sans s'entendre (problème avec les oreillettes pour le feedback du son, en plus d'être ds un endroit très écho), et non seulement elle n'entendait pas le rythme de la chanson, mais elle ne savait même pas sur quelle note elle avait commencé à chanter dès le début. Même sur une petite scène, si les speakers sont autour de nous (ds ce cas, c'est pire comme ils sont partout), le son est envoyé à l'autre bout de la salle et revient aux oreilles du chanteur avec un délai, ce qui fait que tout au long de la chanson, elle a non seulement dû deviner ou l'orchestre en était, mais devait aussi se concentrer a être le plus près possible de la bonne note à chaque début de phrase, sans avoir aucun guide comme elle ne s'entend absolument pas chanter. Victime d'un problème technique, sans compter la fatigue extrème et le stress journaliers qu'elle vivait à ce moment-là précis de sa vie. Une personne normale aurait simplement refuser de chanter car trop a gérer, mais elle tenait à rendre hommage à la France lors d'un moment difficile. Moi ce que je vois, c'est une femme très ''solide'' et en contrôle (du mieux qu'il est humainement possible de l'être ds une telle situation), qui a décidé de chanter tout-de-même, par amour pour la France. On ne pourrait pas s'attendre à mieux, peu importe qui l'on est, lorsqu'un chanteur ne s'entend pas chanter/parler, et n'entends que des sons sourds et sans mélodie car décibels trop élevés pour l'oreille et dû à l'écho. Elle a dû faire preuve d'énormément de concentration et de contrôle pour terminer la chanson. Bcp d'admiration pour elle.

I love me some Celine dion. but was it just me or was she a bit pitchy here? Like quite a few times she was under the pitch. It’s unlike her. But aside from that, she was in the moment and emotes beautifully. I’ve only been a real fan for a couple weeks or so so I don’t know her life or we story. So obviously there’s either technical issues where she could hear herself, or somethings were going on in her life that was affecting her voice. She did a beautiful job.
this is a bad performance of hers as she was off key for most of the song. she is my favorite singer but this is one performance that is not known for its good vocals but for its very emotional context and rawness of her voice but not for being sung on key.
because if you do not know the song originally as is sung by piaf, you wouldn't realize it is off tune. it would help if people listened to songs in other languages than english.

well then you are tone deaf person, because as a native french speaker who knows the song, she was off key. she even said after the performance she was upset because she couldnt hear herself in the earpiece and she was off on some notes. it was a magnificent raw performance but it was off key. if the queen herself says so, i would believe her since she was the one singing it.

No matter what people say, honestly, this isn't one of the best vocal performances of the Queen. BUT this sure is one of the most emotional ones. The lyrics and the circumstances of this performance is testament to that. One should just check out the translated lyrics of this song, if they don't understand the lyrics in French, then they will understand what this means to her. Definitely not flawless vocally but flawless and raw emotionally. I absolutely adore this performance of her and can't hold back tears whenever I see it.
What I love the most about Céline Dion, other than her epic vocals, of course ☺, is that she has always walked her own path in show buisness. Vocals on point, from day one, still you don't hear as much of her music played on the radio. she's been giving classic performances her entire life. It says something about society and has nothing to do with her talent, which has ALWAYS been there. Seems that she is just now being appreciated for the outstanding gift she is.
Clearly this is not vocally perfect. You can sense mucus draining in her throat when she belts the high notes. But for me, this is still one of her best performances. This was emotional and powerful... beautifully raw.

This is one of my favorite performances. I know it's not perfect, the voice is a bit hoarse because of the emotion, but I love this live because it's so emotional and I can feel her pain for the tragedy of Paris and the illness of his beloved housband.

Thank you for focusing on what really mattered... the power in her voice, the clarity, resonance, and precision. Even though she wasn't 100% on key (she herself commented that she couldn't hear herself and the orchestra - kudos for continuing with the amazing tribute anyway) it was still beautiful... raw as you said. Loved the performance. There was raspy parts but it made it so raw and true! Such a difficult song to sing and she nailed it and even made it changed the song a bit at the end making it more difficult if you compare with original singer.

a few high notes were off key which is unusual for Celine. She may have add some vocal issues on that day. Nonetheless it was a wonderful emotionnal performance. As a french canadian myself, I could feel that the emotion was there in her voice and in the lyrics and it was a good performance. Celine is in a league of her own even when she does not feel 100% vocally.

AMA & Celine seem to have a history of bad sound... she was off key almost like she could not hear the orchestra... her voice sounded tired yet you are so gracious knowing she is more than that 1 performance... she still had people crying as I think people felt her raw emotions more than pretty notes...
All that aside... it was a very hard time in her life when her husband was dying and wanted her to go on singing... I cannot imagine what was going through her mind singing in her native French about "if life tears you away from me" an Ode to Love knowing her great love was slowly leaving... Equestrian Sofia... after re-listening to this it seem pretty clear to me that it is a sound issue almost like Céline is singing in tone in a different key??? She is human and those shows are crazy... remember the time she sang "dance with My Father" and the Grammy and her mic was not working... then they gave her a mic and her monitors were not working and she sang ON KEY next to the piano without monitors...

I 1st met Céline when she was 19yo ... I was student and friends of mine were dancing for her and I remember telling EVERYONE that if she was well managed she would be the biggest star... the girl can sing anything and "gets"it it is truly a musical gift...
The clarity wasn't there, and yes---her voice was on the tired side...contextualized (her personal life at the time and the event at hand) it is more than expected and honestly the diminished clarity added a layer of raw emotion that cannot be entirely captured by a more angelic/clear rendition.
Excuse me the clarity isn't there? Can't you hear how clear her voice was??? This rawness on her voice and some fluctuations added to how beautiful the end result of this tribute was. Sometimes the little flaws contributes to the perfection and this is one example of it.

First of all, it is amazing that nobody tell this song was sang by Edith Piaf. And Edith Piaf sang songs with very deep meanings. The song tell a story of a woman ready to do everything he would ask her ...and when the song say ''If life tears you from me'', wich is in french ''si la vie t'arrache à moi'', she was EXACTLY it in her personnal life while she was singing it!. PLUS, she has been asked to sing this french song when France was traumatised by a kind of kamikas who killed many people in the city of Nice in France. If you add that she is french speaking understaning very well the french culture, so understanding the song that is dramatic in itself, this performance was very tough to deliver.
In fact, it was not a usual show she knows by heart in details. The french people could't whish a better tribute. They exactly know the entire meaning there was in this performance. Believe me it was huge. It required a lot, a lot, of energy (considering all circomstances) to sing that song without crying while singing. It required a lot of energy and courage physically and mentally.
I personnaly was very impressed by the performance she delivered by singing this tough song and knowing what she was living by loosing René in the same time. The moment was seriously dramatic. It was not lonly a matter of performance, it was about something much deeper.
More than that, don't forget she did the same when a guy killed some people in Las Vegas, she forgets nobody. We are all equal in her heart. She is our extraordinary Céline.

This was in November of 2015 and her husband died in January 2016. I can imagine that she was extremely tired and emotional. Rare Time that Céline miss the musical note.....we have to be Honest...she wasnt..right on the spot... she did it anyway...and probably she didnt whant to sing .it..she was off stage because if René health...i love her anyway
It's a terrible/stressful experience when you can't hear yourself while singing live due to the earpiece not working and you can't even tell where you are at in the song as you only hear a bunch of noise and echo, instead of a melody, because you have the speakers all around you. Not even including the fact she was sleep deprived and overwelmed emotionally at that precise time of her life, yet did not want to let the people of France down and accepted to sing anyway. I admire her strength and control in such a difficult time, on top of performing with those technical problems and only relying on the memory of the melody as a guide. She's a Master in the art of live performances.

I'm a big fan but this night, Celine must have been sick. She sings flat, and it's not usual for her. For me it has nothing to do with her "being too emotional" (she proved already so many times that she can handle the good singing with being emotional, even when she lost her dad, she cried but she hit the right notes.) I really think she was sick, because she had the same "flat singing problem" with the courage tour last year.

That night, I'm 100% sure she had earplugs problem, and THAT is the only reason she sounded flat (on the original she sounded even more flat). Don't put it on the count of emotions... I follow her since 1983 (yes, she sings in french since that long) and I remember her singing after her niece just died, after her daddy died, after her brother died and even later after René died and she always sounded right. so, for me, emotions are not responsible for her to sound off key that night. She's used to manage and deal with strong emotions. for me, it's more a technical dysfunction with earplugs.

I think this recording might've even been a bit touched up. Before the professional version showed up, the cellphone videos sounded even flatter. But keep in mind, her husband wasn't far from dying at that point. Less than half a year later. He died in January 2016 and this performance was in the later half of 2015.

I hate to criticize Celine b/c she is such an icon, and so tragically lost her husband far too soon, but she was off-key and flat in this performance. It shows that she does not have perfect pitch like Lara Fabian and Jackie Evancho do. She should have had floor monitors in front of her so she could hear the correct pitches of the notes. But she is still one of my favorite singers.
This was after the terrorist attack, watch the video in the background and the crowd. Singing with that much emotion in you is hard as hell and Lara or anyone else would struggle as well (and I am a huge fan of Lara, this is just the reality of this moment). If there were sound issues as some have mentioned then it's even more amazing, but I think it was all the emotion. It's hard to get sounds out let alone sing. That's what makes this perfect.

Malheureusement une des rare mauvaise prestation de Céline. Beaucoup de fausses notes tout le long de la chanson. Une erreur de parole et elle n’est pas du tout a l'aise sur le titre. Crispée et très tendue.

Je sais ce que c'est que de chanter ''live'' sans s'entendre (problème avec les oreillettes pour le feedback du son, en plus d'être ds un endroit très écho), et non seulement elle n'entendait pas le rythme de la chanson, mais elle ne savait même pas sur quelle note elle avait commencé à chanter dès le début. Même sur une petite scène, si les speakers sont autour de nous (ds ce cas, c'est pire comme ils sont partout), le son est envoyé à l'autre bout de la salle et revient aux oreilles du chanteur avec un délai, ce qui fait que tout au long de la chanson, elle a non seulement dû deviner ou l'orchestre en était, mais devait aussi se concentrer a être le plus près possible de la bonne note à chaque début de phrase, sans avoir aucun guide comme elle ne s'entend absolument pas chanter. Victime d'un problème technique, sans compter la fatigue extrème et le stress journaliers qu'elle vivait à ce moment-là précis de sa vie. Une personne normale aurait simplement refuser de chanter car trop a gérer, mais elle tenait à rendre hommage à la France lors d'un moment difficile. Moi ce que je vois, c'est une femme très ''solide'' et en contrôle (du mieux qu'il est humainement possible de l'être ds une telle situation), qui a décidé de chanter tout-de-même, par amour pour la France. On ne pourrait pas s'attendre à mieux, peu importe qui l'on est, lorsqu'un chanteur ne s'entend pas chanter/parler, et n'entends que des sons sourds et sans mélodie car décibels trop élevés pour l'oreille et dû à l'écho. Elle a dû faire preuve d'énormément de concentration et de contrôle pour terminer la chanson. Bcp d'admiration pour elle.
As a true fanatic this was not good.. I mean, yes it was avery emotional tribute to the Paris attack victims, leaving that aside this was not a good performance, he was off key, still...even in her worst days, Ceine can show so many emotions that make you weep

I love me some Celine dion. but was it just me or was she a bit pitchy here? Like quite a few times she was under the pitch. It’s unlike her. But aside from that, she was in the moment and emotes beautifully. I’ve only been a real fan for a couple weeks or so so I don’t know her life or we story. So obviously there’s either technical issues where she could hear herself, or somethings were going on in her life that was affecting her voice. She did a beautiful job.
this is a bad performance of hers as she was off key for most of the song. she is my favorite singer but this is one performance that is not known for its good vocals but for its very emotional context and rawness of her voice but not for being sung on key.
Funny but the review here says nothing about Celine failing - He talks about a wonderful raw live performance
because if you do not know the song originally as is sung by piaf, you wouldn't realize it is off tune. it would help if people listened to songs in other languages than english.
I know the Piaff song - I have Piaff albums - I have seen her biopic - I have read her biography. This performance was Celine's rendition - it was not a fail . as a french speaking person, I can say that she DELIVERED this song
well then you are tone deaf person, because as a native french speaker who knows the song, she was off key. she even said after the performance she was upset because she couldnt hear herself in the earpiece and she was off on some notes.
it was a magnificent raw performance but it was off key. if the queen herself says so, i would believe her since she was the one singing it.
I think Celine never said that after the performance, this is urban legend. Je parle français et je peux vous dire que la version de Céline, quoique différente de celle de Piaf,. est belle. Peut-être qu'elle chante dans un autre registre, mais on ne peut dire qu'elle commet une erreur, elle donne SA version.
