My favourite is Celine Dion, she has SO much precision in her runs, you can hear every single note and I just love her tone and clarity in her voice and her ability to sustain such long phrases effortlessly! I think Mariah has so much versatility throughout her range and really is superhuman when it comes to vocal range and transitioning between registers also I know it's nothing to do with the video but Mariah has written on every single one of her original songs. Whitney had such a well full rounded powerful voice, there are plenty of powerful singers but not with the richness that Whitney had. They're all amazing in their own way.
Kinda agree but she is not the best when it comes to agility she is powerhouse star, long sustained belts and yes agile but the arpeggios both ascending and descending are definitely Mariah, her range is so connected that she can star as low as and F2 all the way to a B4 or A5 .and transition between a fuller more round sound into her head voice in the space of the syllable and also Mariah Carey has done thrills in the 6th and seventh octave and then makes a run in whistle register of 54 notes and both diction are impeccable. No hate on Celine or Whitney whatsoever. The three of them are very different t but a lot closer than you think.

Mariah's riffs and runs are actually very fast but most people miss it, due to her use of Legato. Whitney's vibrato is definitely the most memorable of all singers to me but it's not "perfect" since she uses her jaw. I think she does this for dramatic effect but technically speaking, it's regarded as a flaw.

GarageStudio: Whitney DOESN'T use an excessive jaw vibrato, or anything else like Jhud or anyone does. Her vibrato is the most natural actually. The "movement" in her jaw is just an outcome of her belt's vibration, corresponding to Mariah moving her head or hand when executing a melisma. People mistakenly notice that, but if you would only clearly listen to her vibrato then you would know how natural, open, and stable it is.
Mariah's runs focuses more on the transitions between registers and she is mostly agile in her whistle and falsetto register and how she goes down after doing agile runs is just impressive as hell...

She can also supplement hard runs with equally appealing runs that are easier for her current vocal condition. Her relationship with music among Celine and Whitney is second to none. Mariah’s ability to shift through registers at the flick of a switch is unprecedented. To go from mid belts to sliding into the whistle register in under a second is astonishing. If you’ve seen any of her band intros where she’s creating harmonies and full on melodies by will then you’ll know she’s a genius.

If the universe had a voice, it would be Celine’s. 2. Mariah’s riffs/runs for the transitions to extreme lows and highs.. rich, silky, more vulnerable tone. What sets her apart is her ability to easily & expertly navigate through the whistle register which is why she always remains the high note queen of the world. 3. Whitney’ runs/riffs for easy transitions that incorporate her iconic, strong head voice, always executing with what can only be described as soul. She also scores high in agility which is what riffs/runs is all about, while her often raspy tone adds something special to the mix. I’d say her only setback is that she didn’t engage so much in riff/run techniques as the previous two, that would’ve given us more variety of R/R content as they did. well that's not what I hear my friend. Her runs are unique just like what the commentator here says all the time. I think Celine's greatest performances however were not those found in live videos but during her rehearsals. I think the real magic and gem with how she improvises and how good she she really is uknown to the world because they are 90% during her practice and rehearsals.

Mariah has the fastest and effortless run and that transition was out of this world (and i'm not gonna talk about her God gifted various register here.. lol). i love how she knows when and where to put her run in singing. 2. Celine, most acrobatic run, impresive, up and down. Backing forward. The most complex run. 3. Whitney, gospel run and scaling with her powerful voice. And that tone, just one of the kind. Ugh the vocal trinity! The songbird supreme Mariah’s runs are so fast and is very agile. Her runs in whistle register are UNMATCHED. They sad she is able to run in chest and then transition to whistle register is just amazing. And she can do 55 note with in like 15 seconds in WHISTLE REGISTER. Ugh the way she goes up and down scales it’s like high notes one minute and BAM she’s hitting Eb3s. The voice ms Whitney Houston can RUN, ugh them runs in head voice are great and her vibrato is just wow 😮, not as agile but is amazing, she gives me church vibes. And ms queen of the power ballad really surprised me here she the 2nd fastest with her foreign scales and her runs using her upper belts, her runs at times can be overused like the one with Aretha but she is just amazing! That was really unfair in my opinion, Mariah is well known to have the fastest riffs and runs in the music industry, even her melisma are very fast, it's really sad. I respect his opinion and his choice because Celine was INCREDIBLE 😍 but honestly, I'm really disappointed by the video he picked.
I also think Mariah’s performance are so familiar they are almost unimpressive to him and others. Her music remains wildly popular, regardless of what narrative the media devises. There’s also the issue of Mariah not being able to explore in her live performances because her work is so popular people want to hear the recorded version the most. There are recordings of her scatting in every register. They also failed to include her unique ability to demonstrate agility in lyric baritone notes, unlike any of the other two. She’s also demonstrated the ability to change the color of her tone in every register, including whistle which is uniquely her own gift in popular music. Exploring Mariah’s riffs, runs, inflections, colors and such could take the entirety of this video honestly. 😂
Christopher Davis well said. Basically Mariah doesn’t do the “most” when it comes to her live performances, although most of her live performances are better than the studio versions, she doesn’t add the extra parts of her voice, like riffing and running all over the place or etc 😂.
Celine is the most unbelievable and the most surprising of the three given the fact that Mariah and Whitney are master users of melisma. Celine is definitely the champion of melismas in fact. Love her or hate her, she has proven herself time after time (even today) and that's what you cannot take away from her.
I think Celine was most surprising because she has always been considered a belter. Mariah and Whitney have always been known for their agility, so seeing Celine's agile feats really surprised everyone because it wasn't expected.

Céline has never stopped seeing her vocal cord specialist and remains completely silent a day or two before a show when she can. I remember seeing David Foster say that Celine had discipline and Mariah only had a humidifier and she neglected herself as she got older.

If one person makes it, there’s going to be one that’s better represented just because the singer is that person's favorite of the three and they know their material the best. Whitney's voice is so much more beautiful than everyone else's that it is unreal that she has all the other vocal skills in conjunction with such an extraordinarily beautiful rich and full voice. Her vibrato is unmatched, her head voice is unmatched, the sound of her voice is unmatched, her transitions into that notorious head voice are unmatched, her power is unmatched. Celine has incredible agility and Mariah has incredible range but they don't come close to Whitney in the other categories I mentioned. Whitney's the total and complete package.
For me, it doesn't matter how perfect your voice is. What's important for me is the connection wherein I can feel the soul/emotion of the singer. So I'll go with Whitney Houston.

Yeah this was the 1st outing of this arrangement for the telethon right after 9/11. I remember watching it and thinking hse did so well considering she had jjst had her 1st child and was in the middle of a 2 year break from singing. Just to come in and deliver that incredibly difficult song and with all the emotion it would take to sing it as well in the days after such a horrendous event. Just world class.

My favourite is Celine Dion, she has SO much precision in her runs, you can hear every single note and I just love her tone and clarity in her voice and her ability to sustain such long phrases effortlessly! I think Mariah has so much versatility throughout her range and really is superhuman when it comes to vocal range and transitioning between registers also I know it's nothing to do with the video but Mariah has written on every single one of her original songs. Whitney had such a well full rounded powerful voice, there are plenty of powerful singers but not with the richness that Whitney had. They're all amazing in their own way.

Kinda agree but she is not the best when it comes to agility she is powerhouse star, long sustained belts and yes agile but the arpeggios both ascending and descending are definitely Mariah, her range is so connected that she can star as low as and F2 all the way to a B4 or A5 .and transition between a fuller more round sound into her head voice in the space of the syllable and also Mariah Carey has done thrills in the 6th and seventh octave and then makes a run in whistle register of 54 notes and both diction are impeccable. No hate on Celine or Whitney whatsoever. The three of them are very different t but a lot closer than you think.

Mariah's riffs and runs are actually very fast but most people miss it, due to her use of Legato. Whitney's vibrato is definitely the most memorable of all singers to me but it's not "perfect" since she uses her jaw. I think she does this for dramatic effect but technically speaking, it's regarded as a flaw.

Well said... but as i said “in my opinion”... i know that Mariah riffs and runs are very fast... but what i think is really amazing is that when she does consistent runs for about 8-10 seconds in a mid-speed to make every note clearer and much enjoyable to listen to... as for Whitney... thank u for pointing that out... sorry I didn’t phrase what I meant in a good way.... it may be considered that her vibrato is not completely perfect due to the jaw movement... but I meant to say that it’s perfect to listen to regardless of taking it from a technical point of view... her vibrato is extremely powerful that sometimes it sounds like it’s adding more power to the belt itself.

well that's not what I hear my friend. Her runs are unique just like what the commentator here says all the time. I think Celine's greatest performances however were not those found in live videos but during her rehearsals. I think the real magic and gem with how she improvises and how good she she really is uknown to the world because they are 90% during her practice and rehearsals.

Ugh the vocal trinity! The songbird supreme Mariah’s runs are so fast and is very agile. Her runs in whistle register are UNMATCHED. They sad she is able to run in chest and then transition to whistle register is just amazing. And she can do 55 note with in like 15 seconds in WHISTLE REGISTER. Ugh the way she goes up and down scales it’s like high notes one minute and BAM she’s hitting Eb3s. The voice ms Whitney Houston can RUN, ugh them runs in head voice are great and her vibrato is just wow 😮, not as agile but is amazing, she gives me church vibes. And ms queen of the power ballad really surprised me here she the 2nd fastest with her foreign scales and her runs using her upper belts, her runs at times can be overused like the one with Aretha but she is just amazing! I also think Mariah’s performance are so familiar they are almost unimpressive to him and others. Her music remains wildly popular, regardless of what narrative the media devises. There’s also the issue of Mariah not being able to explore in her live performances because her work is so popular people want to hear the recorded version the most. There are recordings of her scatting in every register. They also failed to include her unique ability to demonstrate agility in lyric baritone notes, unlike any of the other two. She’s also demonstrated the ability to change the color of her tone in every register, including whistle which is uniquely her own gift in popular music. Exploring Mariah’s riffs, runs, inflections, colors and such could take the entirety of this video honestly. 😂

Love her or hate her, she has proven herself time after time (even today) and that's what you cannot take away from her.

If one person makes it, there’s going to be one that’s better represented just because the singer is that person's favorite of the three and they know their material the best. Whitney's voice is so much more beautiful than everyone else's that it is unreal that she has all the other vocal skills in conjunction with such an extraordinarily beautiful rich and full voice. Her vibrato is unmatched, her head voice is unmatched, the sound of her voice is unmatched, her transitions into that notorious head voice are unmatched, her power is unmatched. Celine has incredible agility and Mariah has incredible range but they don't come close to Whitney in the other categories I mentioned. Whitney's the total and complete package.

Yeah this was the 1st outing of this arrangement for the telethon right after 9/11. I remember watching it and thinking hse did so well considering she had jjst had her 1st child and was in the middle of a 2 year break from singing. Just to come in and deliver that incredibly difficult song and with all the emotion it would take to sing it as well in the days after such a horrendous event. Just world class.
