I am so happy to have this formula. Thank you! & thanks Rex Winn! This is the same approach as in ceramic glaze making. My earlier batch was successful but not dialed in. I was able to build a thin mask but not achieve the tight surface. My middle-school students will have the option of paper mache` this session. One student will be building the body of Dumbledore's phoenix, Fawkes. I have bee studying your techniques to support his project. As an art teacher I have the best homework in the World! Thanks for this great channel, your encouraging teaching style and guidance!
What a great project! If your student wants to post his Fawkes sculpture on my blog when it's done (and if it's OK with his mom) he can do it on the Daily Sculptors page here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/daily-sculptors-group-page I know a few thousand people who would love to see how it comes out. :)
Only found your posts yesterday, but now I am hooked. Intending to try out this 'clay' recipe on a bunch of kids at a festival at the end of June. I'll post pix of whatever they make
Jonni Thanks for this version of the recipe. My first attempt using cup measurements was very wet and sticky. Glad to know it’s not just me that had difficulty getting the mix right. I found my joint compound had an oily substance in the compound and when I added baby oil it made it too wet. Think I will leave this next out. Definitely using this recipe next for sure! 🙏🏼
Thank you so much for this video! I saw a lot of videos on making those very nice paper mache antique vintage looking bowls..the famous ones are from restoration hardware. I made one here at home 4 days ago and it’s still not dry coz it’s so thick 🙈 would you mind giving out some tips on how to make one? Thanks a million x 😊❤️
I hadn't seen those bowls so I did a fast Google search, and the ones I found looked like they were made with a thick layer of pulped paper. And yes, it would take a really long time to dry unless you put them in the oven. I found a really good tutorial (which you probably already saw) here: www.ahousewebuilt.com/paper-mache/ You can dry any paper mache in the oven at 250F. If your oven has a fan in it, turn it on. With paper that thick it will still take a long time to dry, but not as long as leaving it out on the counter. Be sure to seal it after it's totally dry (but wait until it's really dry all the way through!!) with a matte acrylic varnish. That will keep it from absorbing moisture from the air. Good luck with it! 😀
@@UltimatePaperMache thank you so so so much for taking the time to reply. I haven’t seen this tutorial before so that’s extremely helpful. Can’t thank you enough for the tips you gave me..Much appreciated 😊🤗
What are the differences between this recipe and the silky smooth one other than the texture? Would each of them suits different purposes? Thanks a lot, kind regards! ^_^
The air dry clay recipe isn't as sticky, and it's smoother than the original paper mache clay recipe. I find the air dry clay slightly more difficult to use because I like to use very thin layers, but many people prefer it. They're both used over an armature, so it's really up to you which one you like best.
I have watched several of your videos before I try my hand at this. So the only difference between the “paper mache clay” and the “air dry clay” recipe seems to be the 70 grams of corn starch, correct ? Thank you.
Almost, but not quite. The proportions of glue and joint compound are slightly different, too, and there's a lot less paper in this recipe than in the paper mache clay. That's what makes it smoother.
It absorbs any extra water and makes the paper mache clay thicker and easier to spread. If you don't want to use the flur, use the new no-flour recipe. www.ultimatepapermache.com/paper-mache-clay-recipe-without-flour
How cool is that. I see your using the toilet paper for the clay but I have seen others use cellulose green fiber insulation. What is the difference and why? Are both okay to use for outside props?
I tried the cellulose insulation once, and the brand that was available to me contained a substance that ruined the clay. It turned it into rubbery blogs. Your brand might work OK, though. No paper mache clay is waterproof, though. You can keep them outside for a little while if you use an outdoor varnish, but they'll still soften because the varnish won't keep all the water out. You'll need to bring them back inside and dry them out if you want to use them again next year.
Hi Faith. I try to keep layers under 1/4" so they'll dry in a day or two. You can use paper thin layers if you want to, because this recipe is so strong when it dries. But that means you need to do most of your sculpting with the armature, and not the paper mache clay.
Hi, first of all.. I love all your videos! I Recently did one of your recipes and I'm wondering, if sprayed with clear spray or varnish would it be waterproof?
It will stay fairly dry for a few days, but not permanently. It tends to soften after a few days of rain. For Halloween decorations or a parade float, a good exterior varnish will work - just not for long-term outdoor use.
Hey Jonni, I’ve got a old fashioned milk turn which I’m going to cover in the paper Mache clay, then use the same clay in silicon moulds to decorate it, paint and seal! They’ve sorted that problem with the order of your book~ and I’ll be getting it in May, if you friend me then I can show you my results on my Facebook page or on Messenger! I also have a channel on here which I’ll put up as well~ you may want to keep an eye on the progress of it!
I can't use copyrighted designs on my UA-cam channel. Disney wouldn't like it. But you can make one. Take a look at the Blue Hippo videos I made, and then use the same methods to create the shapes of your lamp. It will be fun. You can find the first hippo video here: ua-cam.com/video/4AmYS6RYT4c/v-deo.html
First of all let me tell you I love your videos your are very talented artists, I want to ask if you have ever tried to make a "ALEBRIGES" is a paper maché art from mexico, I think would be really nice if you made a video of the process, they are even feature in the movie Coco as the dog in the movie becomes a spiritual being that becomes a "ALEBRIGE" thank you for your videos keep them coming they're great
Hi Iris. I have never made anything in the Alebriges style, so I'm probably not the right person to make a video like that. But I sure would like to see one. If anyone knows of a good video for us in this style, please let us know how to find it.
stupid question: I am VERY Gluten free for medical reasons, so I don't eat flour - but can one use this as in this recipe (with a mask & gloves on) & not get sick?
Hi Valerie. You'd probably need to ask your doctor, but I have heard from people with severe gluten allergies, and they won't touch anything with flour. I recommend using the newer recipe that leaves out the flour. ua-cam.com/video/JYN2QPR6gu0/v-deo.html
It will stick to the plaster unless you use a lot of release, and it dries very hard so it would be difficult to get it out of the mold. I recommend using silicone molds instead. However, the texture of this recipe makes it difficult to get a good casting. I recommend the air dry clay recipe, which dries smoother, but even that one can only be used to make a thin item. ua-cam.com/video/T9lOY1xNslw/v-deo.html
I've done tons of projects from start to finish. They do sometimes require more than one video, because they aren't usually as small as this one. Have you checked out my playlists? ua-cam.com/users/UltimatePaperMacheplaylists
I'm here in Los Angeles 2023 and I can't find that Proform joint compound anywhere! 😡 All they have is Dap and USG joint compound so, I'm gonna try the USG.

I hope this one works. Every brand of joint compound is a little different.
Hi Jonni- thanks for all the wonderful work. I've been into paper mache pumpkins lately and well the recipe I think is important.
Beautiful job.
Thank you!
Love such great instructions 👍
Muy lindo todo lo que realiza .👍😘🇨🇱
Nice recipe, smooth paper clay. TFS
Estoy feliz por que ya tengo internet otra vez y puedo ver tus vídeos gracias besos
Can you use plaster of paris to replace the joint compound?
Yes, but watch this video first: ua-cam.com/video/FLTVGPx4jWk/v-deo.html
Does anyone know if you can make a batch and save leftovers in a closed container??
Yes, you can keep paper mache clay in a closed container. If you need to save it for more than a day or two, stick it in the refrigerator or freezer.

Why isn't a colander or a mesh strainer used to strain the bulk of the water out of the paper?
I do use one, but I didn't want to go get it when I was making this video. A metal mesh strainer works really well.
Can you do an owl in the near future please? I love your work i cnt drag myself away once i get a notification. Have a wonderful day.
