I was "dragged" into church in 2012, and the first sermon I heard was on the Battle of Jerusalem and learned about Hezekiah's water tunnel, strengthened broad walls, Lachish reliefs, Sennacherib's cylinder, etc, and, I was hooked (c.f. Isaiah 36-37). It took another year to surrender to Christ, but how amazing is this topic! Archaeology is one of the most underused apologetics, to which, we should use in sermons for context and understanding that these are not just wonderful "stories". Great work, Sean. GOD Bless

@@jamesmaybury7452 AMEN - the Holy Spirit led me into seminary and apologetics. I also think we can't "argue", necessarily. We present the evidence, humbly (and doing it humbly and showing the peace we have is sometimes enlightening to people - "I want what you have"). We present it, and, "leave a stone in their shoe." The Holy Spirit then has fertile ground as HE wants us to be that vessel. GOD Bless!

@@stacyw3250 I know! I pray I have that same attitude when I speak to people about Jesus or have to offer correction. It's not easy, but when we allow the Holy Spirit to work through us, He gives us what we need to get the job done, but we have to listen to Him and not just run forward full tilt on our own power trying to a accomplish God's goals on our own. We must all learn to walk in step with the Lord and not get in front of Him. That sometimes is the challenge.

@@velkyn1 I have no idea who you are? Your 2 followers on UA-cam @velkyn 1 is not all that impressive. I wonder what credentials you have to criticize anyone? Joel has a Masters Degree in Archaeology from the University of the Holy Land, located in the Old City of Jerusalem, Israel. His mentor is well known archaeologist Simon Gibson. Joel has excavated in Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Beth Aven, Ai and has participated in other archaeological projects. Joel has lived in Israel and Jordan for over ten years and presently resides in Ammon. Not sure what your beef is with Joel, he is an archaeological scholar and author.

    • @velkyn1

@@chipthompson6257 Oh noes, Chip, I don't have many followers. Nice to see that you think that's important. So, a imam with more followers than you is more truthier than you? :D
Joel has a "masters degree" from a diploma mill that has no accreditation and is not recognized a a university in Israel. Shimon Gibson has made various false claims, including he supposed found the "cave" of John the Baptist. His "evidence", a figure of a man on the cave wall. That's it, no name, no distinguishing attributes, nothing. The Biblical Archaeological Society says this about this nonsense "The argument linking the Suba cave to John the Baptist, however, is difficult and circumstantial. The claim that John the Baptist was venerated in the cave from Byzantine to Islamic times is based on the figure of a man incised on a wall high up in the cave (after centuries of soil deposition, the floor of the cave rose 7 feet). The figure, which is about 28 inches high, has no name attached, so we must guess who is depicted. He is wearing a garment like a skirt that is decorated with punctures in the plaster, perhaps to depict a garment of camel’s hair. He wears no shirt and bears a staff in his left hand. His oversized head bears a crown (or a hat). More striking to me is that he is beardless (a youth?), though all the figures Gibson adduces as parallels are also beardless. John is adult and bearded, however, in Christian art in the West.1 The crescent-shaped object sticking out to his left I take to be a shepherd’s bag, though Gibson seems to prefer seeing it as a lamb. The figure’s right hand is raised, perhaps in blessing. There is a hole in the plaster between his lower legs, which Gibson speculates held a relic of John the Baptist. That is possible but not demonstrated.
"The identification of the figure with John the Baptist rests upon (1) the general similarity of the figure to the person as described in the Gospels, (2) rough similarity to John the Baptist figures on eulogia tokens (good luck charms carried by pilgrims)a and on Byzantine metal ampullae, or holy water vessels (where he is bearded, wears a long garment and has a halo). The similarity is not very close, but then we do not know the artistic tradition of drawing John the Baptist in early Byzantine contexts."
Always a rather bad sign when Christians think this is a poor claim. A figure drawn in Byzantine times also is no evidence that John the Baptist was anywhere near the cave. There is only verbal tradition.
He like many failed apologists and archaeologists cannot show that their "interpretations" are true. We also have Gibson working with the Biblical Archaeological Society which is no more than a group of Chrisitans desperate to find anything at all to support their baseless claims. They were responsible for the unsupported claims about the James ossuary being supposed for James the brother of Jesus.
I've done excavations too. That doesn't mean everything I might claim is true just because I lifted some dirt.
It also doesn't matter where someone lives. Your desperate appeals to authority, which Joel doesn't have, fail.

Not exactly "physical evidence", but, please let me know if this is helpful? Overwhelming Evidence: God said that he would prove His existence by telling the future and never being wrong. A Pandemic (Plagues) are prophecied along with many other CONCURRENT EVENTs for the end times ( see near the bottom, Coming in the Future - # 2 Plagues.. These events have started.
Covid is part of it. And just because Humans ( maybe China's Wuhan Project) went awry, has little to do with God. God destroyed all the earth's population with a Flood. Get ready for more starting now. Here are many of the end time concurrent prophecies.
But the following end time prophecies are for sincere truth seekers. Based on what you have written, you do not seem to be one of them.
Matthew 24:33 Said Jesus: “…when ye shall see all these things (End time prophesies), know that it is near, even at the doors” What is the probability of all these things converging together at any point in history. Most are converging right now.
      1. Israel regathered from many countries - Ezekiel 36:24 - written 6th century B.C.
      2. And around the same time: Persia (Iran), Russia, Libya - allied and all enemies of Israel - Ezekiel 38:1-12 - about 570 B.C. Iran (Persia) has never been allied with Russia until recently.
      3. And at same time: Many will say they are “Messiah” - Matthew 24:5 - Written about 60 A.D. (Christ or “Christ Consciousness” or “God”). Currently proclaimed by many involved in the New Age (ie: Oprah Winfrey’s friends); India’s Gurus, Scientologists, Kabbala followers, Gnostics, etc. Never before the 1960’s has this happened in the West
4.And at same time: Jerusalem “a burdensome stone to all people” Zechariah 12:3 - written about 500 B.C.
How likely that someone could just guess which city among all cities in the world, would be most likely to concern all humans in the end times (because of weapons of mass destruction & radical Islam)? And how likely that it would occur at the same time that those prophesies listed above & below are also all happening simultaneously.
      5. And at the same time: Jesus’ Gospel to be preached to all nations Matthew 24:14. Via radio & Television, most people in the world today have heard of Jesus and His good news.
      6. And at the same time: Possibility of all “flesh” being destroyed Matthew 24:22. Until the 1940’s, weapons of mass destruction didn’t exist.
      7. And at the same time: “Great Earthquakes” in diverse places increasing like Matthew 24:7-8 “sorrows” = “birthpangs” in the Greek. We all know that birth-pangs grow in intensity as the time draws nearer. Mark 13:8, Luke 21:11.
Number of earthquakes worldwide with magnitude of 8.3 or greater by 10 year intervals (From the U.S. Geological Survey website):
      1901-1910 4
      1911-1920 1
      1921-1930 3
      1931-1940 2
      1941-1950 1
      1951-1960 3
      1961-1970 3
      1971-1980 1
      1981-1990 0
      1991-2000 1
      2001-2010 7
Slightly revised figures for 10 year intervals show 2003 to, so far through 2012, a total of 8 earthquakes at magnitude of 8.3 or greater. The rest of the 10 year intervals are almost exactly as shown to our left, with 1902 through 1911 still a total of 4. No other 10 year interval had more than 3, just as on the intervals to our left.
Plus, consider another in Japan upgraded to 9.0 - March 2011. In 120 years there have been only 6 with magnitude of 8.8 or greater. Two of these have occurred just in the past 13 months Japan - 9.0 March, 11, 2011 & Chile 8.8 Feb. 27, 2010. Based on the prophesies, look for more great quakes to be occurring soon.
      8. And at the same time: “And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.” Matthew 24:12. Increasing terrorism, financial fraud, and lying politicians, worldwide, are causing many to be more fearful and distrusting of others.
9.And at the same time; “Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot…Even thus shall it be in the day when the son of man is revealed.” - Luke 17:28-30. The days of Lot were marked by widespread homosexuality - Genesis 19:4-8. Today, homosexuality is being promoted as an acceptable lifestyle in the West. This has not occurred in the west in the past 2000 years.
      10. And at the same time: Knowledge shall be increased & many shall run “to and fro” - Daniel 12:4
      11. Wars & Rumours of wars - Matthew 24:6 Rumors of civil war (usually termed "unrest" by the press) in Libya; Syria, Yemen, Bahrain, Jordan, & continuing in Iraq. Fighting in May 2011- Libyan vs. Tunisian troops, also in Sudan; Republic of Dagestan (against Russian fighters), Taliban against Afghanistan govt., CPI (Maoist) fighters against Govt. of India, clashes between border troops of Thailand & Cambodia, and Bolivia.
      Coming in the Future:
      1. Famines
      2. Pestilence (Plague)
      3. Peace Treaty with Israel - Daniel 9:27, Ezekiel 38:11 - to last for what appears to be 3.5 years
For there shall arise false christs and false prophets and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold I have told you before. Wherefore, if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. For as the lightning cometh out of the east and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the son of man be.
      (Matthew 24:24-28).
      4. Many false prophets shall arise, and shall deceive many. Matthew 24:11
      5. Mark of the Beast - Global Economy - Revelation 13:16-18
      6. One World Governmental leader worshiped - Revelation 13:7-8
      7. Damascus, a city of over 2 million inhabitants will be destroyed. See Isaiah 17:1 By the context of the chapter, this is an end time prophesy.

It is the oldest found in Israel, not the oldest. The oldest (thus far) is an inscription found in Sudan dating to around 1400 B.C. It certainly throws secular reasoning out the window about the dating of the Exodus. It would be in the in the 1400 timeframe (the Bible also gives the accurate date for this). Secularist are lost and look amateurish digging biblical history without the Bible.

I was helping with an elementary school art show. The judges came into the room and started piously observing the various childlike art pieces. They came to a very strange object and started ooing and awing over the “creativity of this child’s work.” The moms were looking at each other in disbelief. Just as the judges were about to award this strange object a blue ribbon, a teacher rushed in with another object, went straight to the judges, and placed the second object under the first and twisted the first into position. Low and behold a very simple paper house came into focus. “Oh my goodness we just found this piece in the hall, the child would’ve been so disappointed” explained the teacher.
The judges looked at each other with surprise and sheepishly retreated from their artistic pedestals.
We moms just rolled our eyes. 🙄

This area of study, and in depth scholarship based teaching that goes back to the original language scriptures and a thorough understanding of the scriptures, such as those from Dr. Michael Heiser's work -- is something that we should be using for evangelism and trying to reach people with the gospel.
The post modern western mind is very resistant to the classical methods of putting forth the gospel, but when presented with the history and understanding of how the Bible communicates the truth as depicted in the way it would have been understood by the people who lived when they wrote the Bible scriptures. If you are willing to accept the Bible as even possibly true, then you have the only consistent and lengthy history of the world, and especially the middle East in existence. When you add Archaeology to the supernatural worldview as the ancient people understood it, you indeed have the greatest story ever told. "Saint" Helena (the mother of the first Roman Emperor who was Christian, Constantine) lived about 300 years after Jesus' day. "Way back then, Helena traveled all over Palestine and was always fortunate. Whenever [she] found a thing mentioned in her Bible, Old or New Testament, she would go and search for that thing and never stop until she found it. If it was Adam, she would find Adam's grave; if it was the Ark of Noah, she would find the Ark; if it was Goliath or Joshua, she would find their graves." [Mark Twain in The Innocents Abroad]
Helena found the copper plate that Pilate had nailed to the top of her Savior's cross, and upon which Pilate had written, "This is the King of the Jews." She also found the three crosses upon which Christ and the two thieves were crucified, and the exact spot of the crucifixion, and the very spot where the soldiers divided the rainment of the Saviour, not to mention the tomb of Melchizadek (an Old Testament prophet), and the rift in the rock made by the earthquake (mentioned only in Matthew) at the time of Jesus' Crucifixion. And she founded churches to commemorate such discoveries.
Mark Twain in The Innocents Abroad tells the true story of his trip to Europe and the Holy Land, a trip he took with a group of pious Christian sightseers. Together, they visited numerous holy sites in the Near East, including, "an Arab village ... where Noah's tomb lies under lock and key." Twain wrote, "Noah's tomb is built of stone and is covered with a long stone building. The building had to be long because the grave of the honored old navigator is two hundred and ten feet long! It is only about four feet high, though. He must have cast a shadow like a lightning rod. The proof that this is the genuine spot where Noah was buried can only be doubted by uncommonly incredulous people. The evidence is pretty straight. Shem, the son of Noah, was present at the burial, and showed the place to his descendants, who transmitted the knowledge to their descendants, and the lineal descendants of these introduced themselves to us today. It was pleasant to make the acquaintance of members of so respectable a family. It was a thing to be proud of. It was the next best thing to being acquainted with Noah himself."

Using evidence, we have found that the everything in the bible is not false - for instance names and places that had been borrowed from reality, but it always required ignoring evidence or outright proof to believe to believe all the events of the bible. Hence why almost no scientist believes the bible is inerrant any more. Today, the standard has become whether it's incorrant. Is that word for without correctness?

      Dear @Don Gee,
"but it will not confirm what happened or what was said."
Don, actually, sometimes it does !
I realize that finding the location of a city does not necessarily confirm the whole story, but sometimes it can confirm more than what you seem to be aware of.
In the excavation of Jericho, there were many aspects of the dig, that supported many specific portions of the story, described in the Text of the Book of Joshua. The excavation confirmed
      1. the existence and location of the city of Jericho
      2. that Jericho was a walled fortress
      3. that the incidence did occur in the springtime, after the harvest.
      4. that the walls actually did fall
      5. The walls fell in such a way that the Israelites could go "straight up"
      into the city
      6. the city was set on fire
      7. the walls fell before, the city was set on fire
      8. a portion of the wall did not fall
      9. there were windows in the actual external wall
      10. there was no long prolonged siege
      11. there was no complete plundering of the city (very unusual)
(These finds were confirmed by Garstang, Kenyon and Woods)
These discoveries in the excavation, confirm some of the details told in the narrative of the destruction of Jericho, as written in the Book of Joshua. The excavation matches the story in very specific ways, supporting the historicity of the story.
These finds also support the authenticity of the text of Joshua. Many people hypothesize that the Book of Joshua was a legendary story, written over 700 yrs. after it supposedly occurred, by people at a later time.
The finds of the excavation casts strong doubt against this hypothesis.
Since the excavation matches the story in very specific ways, how
could these writers, making up a story 700+ yrs. later, have know what actually happened at Jericho 700+ yrs earlier, and make up a story that was consistent with the findings, that happened 700 yrs. before they were even born ? The archaeological finds in the excavation of Jericho make this popular hypothesis very unlikely, unreasonable and essentially obsolete.
Archaeological finds can shed light on issues, that casts significant doubts on theories.
Obviously, not every excavation gives such detailed information, that is so specific the the narrative of the event. However, sometimes the finds in the excavation does give strong support to the event.
The discovery of Joshua Ai and it excavation has also given good support of that narrative and there are others.

      DZ

@@jbeiler55 that makes sense. I certainly agree there is something wrong with that argument. We can certainly prove the Bible is Historicaly reliable but does it prove what the purpose of the Bible is as being true? I don't think it does. On the other hand, everyone has faults in their arguments but does that disprove the entirety? I think that is an error as well.
Another assumption and error that others make is, they assume that the overview in the video is the entire work and thought put into the topic instead of realizing it is a summation of all of it that is put together for others to be able to understand. Therefore, when they find a small error in the argument they "throw the baby out with the bathwater".
As Christians we don't take everything an atheist says as a lie but neither do we trust it fully and often we find how it fits perfectly into what we believe. We produce PHD after PHD who challenges the standard paradigm and comment after comment is posted as if these people know more about the topic than the one presenting it. Though certainly a possibility it is rarely the case and more often than not they do not argue the actual points being made. Instead they hurl insults as if they were facts to be argued. Yes, it is frustrating.

What you find especially is the wall and it fell outward and created a ramp for the invaders to run into the city. The dates of the destruction of Jericho could be off as it is dated from Egyptian dates which has room from moving time a few hundred years. Check out the series of videos called pattern of evidence. If you watched this video and others regarding Jericho, the reason why people question Jericho historically goes back to Kathleen Kenyon. She dated the destruction incorrect because she expected a certian type of pottery to be present which she didn't find, yet the pottery she was expecting to find was discovered later. She didn't date on actual pottery evidence that was there, but of absence of pottery she didn't find.

The tourism industry is revolved solely upon archaeology; all things related to their ancient history.
We have written annals from Assyrian and Babylonia Kings that are consistent with the Bible, Lachish as one conquest example. A huge mound (equivalent to a 6 story building) sits in Mosul (ancient Nineveh). I am convinced that it is King Sennacherib's palace, who sacked Lachish.
Presently, I am reading research done by Gerald Gertoux, 'Assyrian and biblical chronologies are they reliable'? They are.
My idea is this; instead of doing excavations only, what if we revive the ancient palaces and administrative buildings from Nineveh, Nimrud, Ur and Sumeria, etc.? 'If we build it- they will come'.
(Babylon is the only exception. It will remain desolate forever).
We can literally bring these places back using the same mud to make the bricks. (Think of the fiery furnace of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego from the Book of Daniel).
Iraq is truly a biblical place. Many believe the Garden of Eden is there. New evidence shows that the Tower of Babel could be in Barsippa.
Abraham and Sarah came from there. Nineveh is mentioned numerous times as well as Babylon. Nineveh was the city that God was about to destroy, but they were spared. Read Jonah.
Iraq is an open-air museum which is interconnected to the Bible. My thought is to make a Silk Road (so to speak) that will lead to all the places and events from the Bible throughout the Near East region.
People forget or simply don't know that the Bible is a historical book. Rather than show artifacts in a museum, people can see the cities, palaces, administrative buildings, Tigris/Euphrates river for themselves (in Iraq as a start).
The Iraqi Ministers must be presented with future projected dollars that pertain specifically to the tourism industry. The deal we can present them; is they have to match our money dollar for dollar. 'If we build it- they will come'.
It is time to turn the tide. We have the ability to present something tangible on their table. A deal which benefit them (tourism), and an open-air museum for the world to see.
I have recently returned from Baghdad. It is the most fascinating country I have ever visited. It is ancient as time itself. I truly don't have the words to express this historically remarkable place.
Lastly, I am hopeful no one gets to hung up over the Christian side of this proposal (for non-Christians). I am a Christian, and I know that there are millions of us; who want to see for ourselves all the places in Iraq that the Bible speaks of.
The bottom line, this is about tourism for Iraq, and following ancient history for the rest of us in the world. The ancient Iraqis were instrumental in bringing Civilization to the world through the first ever written text, math/geometry, science, architecture, etc. An absolutely amazing and beautiful place.
