Yes, definitely. In most cases it prevents rot from containers that get too much moisture, and may get clogged or not have enough drainage. The important thing is to keep bulbs in a cool enviroment to mimic outside temps, and to keep them dark so they don't start growing too early.
@Alison Sneed yes you absolutely plant them outside. That though is done in Fall. This video was specific to cintainer planting and how I delay planting my spring bulbs in my pots until late winter because we have wet winters (snow & rain), and I dint want to risk my bulbs rotting in pots. The in ground bulbs are planted in the Fall.
Great idea buying them discounted in the fall, Steph !! They're going to be a great display. Glad you shared to reuse the soil, such a waste to toss it. "News that you can use" love it !! I hope you have a great week !! Cheers Jason and Colleen ⚘️⚘️⚘️
Hi Jason and Colleen! So much waste with throwing out the soil, when really you can just ammendment it a bit and keep reusing. Potting mix is expensive! Thabjs for watching!
Thank you! They do break down over time, but great option that does last a bit. Another option could be a piece of an old window screen, or even landscape fabric. I dint like landscape fabric in the garden, but works well as a liner in bottom of pots to prevent too much soil loss.
Excellent!! Late winter are you saying end of February to March? I was afraid my bulbs wouldn't come up if I wanted until then. Now I'm excited to hear that I could plant them now. Thank you for all your great videos!! I've commented before and you answered me! Thank you so much. I also just watched your video from the Tractor Supply store and I was excited to hear you are in zone 6 in MA. I am in MA too. I made a list of things to get from your video at Tractor Supply. 🙂 You are one of my top go to's when I search for gardening advice. TY
Hi there, As long as you have kept them cool and in a dark place, they should still have the chill to help them bloom. Get them outside asap so they can get some water & sun. I placed mine out about 2 weeks ago. They haven't broken the soil yet. I hope your able to find things on your wish list, such a fun time of year. Thank you so much for your kind words, and for being here. Happy Gardening!
oooo finally i see colorblends! Those are the bulbs used in the St. Louis Hospital for landscaping. I was thinking of ordering them at some point to fill my hills.
Hi there! Lol thank you! It's taking nearly 11 years of living here and going on 9 years to get it to be pretty. A labor of love. But I so love my yard and being outside any chance we get.
Hi there! After I plant them in pots, and set them out, I do an initial watering and after that I let the weather do the rest. We get rain in snow in winter which is enough for the bulbs. In fact they can take periods of dryness. If you think about it, bulbs are In packages from spring once they are harvested and dried out, all the way through Fall when they go for sale for planting. Thanks for watching.
@@HookedandRooted oh thanks a lot for the detailed info. Highly appreciate it. I am planting them for the first time. Based in Austria, will have snow soon too. So I was a bit skeptical. But thank you, thank you so much for a prompt answer. Merry Xmas in advance & a prosperous new year ahead ! Much regards from Linz.
Great video Steph! Your editing is amazing- I’m taking notes!! Ok rookie tulip grower question- how are these going to bloom without prechilling? Did you have them in a place that got cold enough? I had to put my bulbs in the refrigerator to get them to bloom here in California!
Hi Janey! Yes they do need to be chilled. I kept them in my unheated garage. In my zone 6, it has been pretty chilly for the past couple months. Temps range between 40-50 degrees in there. In your case I believe you would need to refrigerate them for a period if time before planting. Thanks for watching!
glad it helped! I usually treat them like annuals. However, last year I pulled them up and threw the bulbs in a paper grocery bag and stored them in my basement (a cool dark place), and then in Fall planted them in a couple random spots to see how they would do. I had one grouping near my shed that did well! but I also had a couple spots (behind my driveway walls) that only a handful of tulips came up. So its very unpredictable in terms of which varieties are vigorous enough to return for a second year or "perennialize" . Most people treat them as annuals. Which makes pots a great option. Easy disposal, vs. digging them up out of the ground. I plan on throwing them into my veggie garden raised bed this year as another trial. Even if I get a couple tulips to cut, its worth it vs trashing them.
What month did you do this? I am also in Zone 6. My daughter bought too many bulbs, lol. We we’re only able to get a few in the ground. I’m wondering what month you did this? Thank you. I need a She Shed 😊
I'm in zone 5B. I'm planting a bunch of tulip bulbs I got on clearance. I'm done with in the ground, and starting to do some large pots. I'm concerned that we get too cold in 5B, for the tulip bulbs. I'm wondering about buying some water pipe cable that is designed to keep pipes from freezing, and wrapping around the pots. Have you tried anything like that? Or do you have any other suggestions to keep the tulip pots from getting to cold? Thanks
Hi Victoria, I believe they will be just fine. They are very cold tolerant. My biggest concern would be ensuring you have proper drainage so that there is no standing water that could potentially rot the bulbs. If you can keep the pots in a more protected location, it may be better.
Hi, I pot up my bulbs in late winter. I keep them in a closed paper bag in a basement refriderator to keep them cool until I"m ready to plant them in late winter in my pots. I use my pots for winter greens containers, so they aren't available for me to plant until late winter. I also worry about the bulbs rotting in the pots from snow and rain over the long fall and winter. So this method of waiting to pot my bulbs has worked well for me. Hope this helps.
Really enjoyed your video about growing tulips in pots. We plant a lot of tulips in pots, mainly in the Autumn (Fall) but we have just planted some more in February and will compare which planting produces the best flowers. Have subscribed and will follow you. Perhaps you might like to check us out and see how we do things in The UK. Best Wishes.
Hi there! Thanks for watching and for subscribing. That's a great idea to compare how fall planting does vs. Winter planting in the pots! Please make a vid and let us know. I've just subbed to your channel and look forward to checking it out.
Hi there, I usually buy whatever is on sale at Home Depot or Lowes. Usually StaGreen Potting soil is the best price when there isn't a sale, but I have used Miracle Grow potting mix in my containers with flowers when its on sale. It works well.
Right, they will get watered by the elements, rain & snow. If you have a very dry winter, then you can water them occasionally. You just want to ensure you gave good drainage in that planter.
So good to know it’s not too late & there are actually advantages to late winter planting.
Yes, definitely. In most cases it prevents rot from containers that get too much moisture, and may get clogged or not have enough drainage. The important thing is to keep bulbs in a cool enviroment to mimic outside temps, and to keep them dark so they don't start growing too early.

Great tip with the coffee filter..you can also use an old piece of screen, paper towel pieces…

Hi there! In this video I didn't have a mic on. It was just the mic on the camera. Pretty sure this vid was filmed on my phone.
What is the name of the soil in the black bag?
Hi Taisha, I believe it was the premium container/potting mix by miracle grow.
