I live in zone 9b I live about and hour or so north of you. I have never pre-chilled any of my bulbs. I have some tulips that I bought from Sam's Club about 8 years ago and they have always grown beautifully without pre-chilling. They have long stems and big beautiful flowers. I think the trick is to get them in the ground early enough. I did that before knowing that bulbs had to be pee-chilled in our area. Even though i've known about it for a few year's now i've taken a chance and just planted without pre-chilling. Some things work out and others don't. I notice that hyacinths do benefit from pre-chilling. I only have one refrigerator so it would be hard to pre-chill bulbs. 😭 I can't wait to see your updates .
I'm the opposite. I am in zone 6b, right on the edge of 7a. Our winters just aren't staying as cold for long enough. My tulips, hyacinths, and daffodils have struggled hard the last few years. I normally plant bulbs the 3rd or 4th week in October. Now, i think i'm going to have them delivered in mid September, chill them until the beginning of December and plant at that time.
Can't help it when someone tells me not to do something... Well you know. Happy 1 year and you've come along way. That's why we stay. Happy planting🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷and almost 20,000.
Thank you thank you thank you! I live in zone 9a and never knew how long to chill the bulbs and completely forgot that you cannot store them near fruits and veggies. No wonder I had trouble last year. I truly appreciate these tips and really enjoy your channel. Keep up the great work!
Janey, trust me, you wouldn't want to live in zone 5a because most of the plants that are perennial in your zone are annuals here! Indeed, we don't have to prechill anything, but sometimes it seems like winter lasts forever, and then it's already summer, hot, dry, and extremely humid! ~Margie🤗💐🦋
@@DigPlantWaterRepeat Oh, so true, however, gardening is my passion, so no matter what Mother Nature (or is it, Father Time?) throws our way, as gardeners we figure out a way to adapt! 🤣
I am so glad you did this video, Janey! I was just getting ready to put my tulip bulbs in the fridge that also has veges and fruits. Now I know why my tulips didn't grow well last year. I have been thinking of buying a small fridge for various reasons and that helped me decide. I'm getting one today. Thank you!
Thank you so much! I ordered crocus bulbs because they’re adorable but had NO clue what the do with them in the meantime. I’m on the border of 8b/9a. They’ve been in my dark pantry but I think I’ll designate my garage fridge for this (after removing the watermelon!) Thank you for the tips!
I’m in 8b and have never pre-chilled them. I buy them and usually plant them in mid-October and in spring, they bloom. I leave them in the ground. We do get snow and pretty cold in winter months but I’ve had good luck with all types of bulbs.
You have no idea how super helpful this video was to me! I purchased a bunch of bulbs a couple of weeks ago and was worried that I would have to find refrigerator space for all of them. I was even thinking of purchasing a mini fridge to store them in my garage. Thanks to your video, I now know that I only need a small amount of space for the ones that need chilling, so I should be able to make enough room in my kitchen refrigerator for them. Thanks so much, Janey - you are the best!
I actually live in western Canada in zone 3 and last fall I bought bulbs & planted them in pots for some earlier spring colour as I find that no matter when the package says the tulips are supposed to bloom, nothing starts blooming until May. I planted only tulip bulbs into pots but I stored them in an unheated shed and we had temps go down to -40°c 😢 the bulbs are all mushy. I’ll try again this fall but chilling the bulbs in the fridge & planting them in pots in March to see what happens. Wish me luck!
Congratulations on your fist year. I hope you have many more wonderful years. This was a very interesting video. I did not know you could get pre chilled bulbs. You should look at The Southern Bulb Company. They have bulbs that bloom in warmer climates. I can’t wait to see all the beautiful blooms. Have a wonderful day.
I order my tulips, etc. from a grower in Mt Vernon, Wa. They do any pre-cooling on their farm prior to shipment. Your tulips will be ready to plant when you receive them. Very convenient and they send top notch bulbs.
So thankful for Hooked and Rooted for referring me to your page. This was exactly what I needed to know. I’m going to try to grow bulbs for the first time. I think I may be in the same area as you (zone 9b) and have parents in Rdg. I had stopped by Wyntour gardens & happened to see your video on wyntour gardens, too. Needless to say, I’ll be a regular viewer :)
Hello, I live in zone 10, 11. How do I take care of the tulip bulbs once they are removed from the fridge after I plant them in pots, how often to water them and what to do with them once they finish flowering, how to store them again?
Thanks so much for this informative video. I just bought several bags of bulbs at Costco myself thinking they were ready to go for zone 9b in Windsor, Ca. Since I dont have an extra refridgerator I hope Costco will let me exchange my bags of tulips for more daffodils,
Hi Heidi! Yep, I would just be safe and stick with the daffodils then! You will be happier with the outcome I think! I grew up in Wikiup and spent a lot of my time in Windsor! I miss it!
I'm here in zone 5 and I'm definitely going to try to chill some bulbs because every time I plant them in pots and leave them out in the winter they just get mushy and I want lots of pots next year on my front porch filled with tulips.
I’m in zone 6a and plant my bulbs in pots and overwinter in my unheated attached garage. I keep the pots a bit closer to the door that leads to the inside so its a bit warmer. Have had great success the past few yrs
I received my bulb order yesterday so this video is perfect timing! Congrats on your first year on YT. I love watching your videos. It’s good to learn from someone who is a relatively new gardener and still learning herself! 💞🌹🌷
How funny!!! I just spent hours yesterday and this morning scrubbing my old fridge in the garage so I could plug it in for my bulbs 😆😆😆. Love your videos ❤ and hi from Folsom CA 🙌🏻 basically neighbors lol
😲 I knew I needed to pre chill my tulips but I didn't know I needed it for the crocuses! I already planted it in my pot 🙃 should I go dig it back up?! I'm so impatient lol 😆 thanks Janey! I love watching your video, so glad you are doing what you doing.
Hello Janey! Happy UA-cam Anniversary. I live in zone 8b here in Australia and never need to pre-chill. In fact most of England and Ireland also falls within zone 8, and pre-chilling isn't done there either. So, as you say, it's worth experimenting!
Hi, I live in Malaysia - average temp is around 32 deg celcius on warm days & abt 24 deg celcius on rainy days & nights. I have to chill all my Amaryllis bulbs as they simply do not give out any flowers otherwise. I normally keep them in the crisper section of my fridge for abt 6 weeks. However, not all of them flower despite refrigeration. Still, it's the only way for me.
Hlo ma’am I don’t have a separate refrigerator for pre chilling my tulip bulb but I want to pre chill them with veggies n fruits . Can u tell me a trick so I can store my bulbs with them
I'm 7b, have always planted them and walked away. Honestly I had never heard about bulbs needing a cold period til lst yr. I had some shorties and thought crap, then looked at pack🙄 Would you be ok with me sharing this video with Alexandria at the Middle Sz Garden, she's in the UK.? She just had a video recently about bulbs and didn't know about using the fridge, I mentioned it in my comment. This video has the best info, maybe she'd like to do a partner video with you.
Wow, this is the first time I've heard of this! Thank you so much for sharing. I bought a bunch of tulip bulbs because I plan on putting them in some containers in front of the house (I don't wanna put them in the ground because I've learned that the rabbits love them!). Would pre-chilling also work for containers? I'm worried that I'm already too late because I'm in zone 7b!
Hello Janey! Thank you for sharing this. I had no idea either and i will be returning the ones I can’t prechill. When would you say I should plant narcissus and leucojum? I’m in the same zone as you and live in woodland :)
Oh hey neighbor! I am planning on planting my daffodils late Nov/early December. I've heard thru the grapevine that you want to plant them before the 2nd week in January at the very latest here! Good luck and thanks for watching!
Thanks my friend! I actually never did an update. My sunflowers were terrible! I don't think it was the seeds though. I had a tough time with sunflowers this year!
