Nice work fella, enjoyed watching you work. Teaching myself at the moment, only have a couple of bench chisels and a starter set of small Japanese chisels but am really enjoying the process (nothing as fancy as your work, just sketch carving on scrap pine and oak so far) keep up the good work, you've earned a new sub for sure 😀

Thanks, I appreciate it! What brand of Japanese chisels did you get? How have they been workin' out for ya?

No worries, credit where its due my friend 😀 Cannot remember who makes them but they have power grip written on them lol. It's a set of 6 detail chisels off Amazon, they have helped me improve no end! Am limited to smaller stuff at the moment as it takes an age to hog out the background with the little gouge but they work very well for softer woods. I am saving up for a set of bigger chisels to tackle bigger stuff, sometimes it's better making do with what you have though - forces you to learn the capabilities and limitations of your tools lol.

Yeah for sure. Honestly, that's a constant struggle I feel, lol. Designing the project according to the tools you have. Trying to do the job with the wrong tool can lead to lots of frustration.. It's funny, but every single project I've done so far has been that way. I haven't been carving super long, but I've realized that the design of the project is a skill in itself. It's better to take a couple extra hours in the design process, because it can save you big time during the carve.

Sounds about right, from the little I've done so far I've found I'm only as good as the marking out. I'm not the greatest sketch artist so my attempts haven't been the best lol. Do you mark out the basic outline then work from a drawing for ref or do you just wing it after the outlining??

barry peach I’ll usually outline the major layers with a router. Once that’s done I’m usually winging it from there. I make my project sketch exactly to scale tho so I can reference it later if I need to. That’s also how I transfer my sketch onto the wood as well.
