Welcome to the SEO paragraph: From Sweeney Todd to Les Misérables, it's hard to say which came first, Helena Bonham Carter's style or her acting roles... but in this age of 'fashion aesthetics' she probably sits somewhere between steampunk, fairycore, grunge, witchcore, or maybe I'd call it 'dark academia in detention'? Her part in Enola Holmes makes me want to call it 'suffragette on the run'. Whatever we call it, I'm excited to be finally indulging my goth / janis ian from mean girls fashion fantasies whilst also appeasing the part of me that demands second hand clothing be pretty much all I buy. I actually think I get MORE choice when 'thrifting' online, the gems I've found I'd never be able to dream up. I know she's known for Bellatrix Lestrange and Fight Club, but my favourite parts she's played have to be Mrs Lovett, Edith Ellyn in Suffragette and Queen Elizabeth in The King's Speech. I did like her in Enola Holmes BUT she didn't get enough screen time, however I just discovered they're shooting a sequel so I demand justice for Eudoria Holmes. If you're still reading you get a massive gold star from me, or given the subject matter perhaps it should be a pie with a priest in it? I've only just started the video but I have to confirm your theory on her dressing sustainably, you're correct! She crafts a lot herself and shops secondhand but in more than half the red carpet photos you used of her she's wearing Vivienne Westwood. As far as designer brands go, Westwood is one of the most sustainable! The brand is heavily inspired by a mixture of british punk and 18th century silhouettes so of course Helena loves it, but that also means they're all about reusing and remaking!

Just to add to this - Vivienne Westwood herself is one of the creators of punk and punk style (she helped unite Sex Pistols in her old, handmade shop and dressed them! Her 2nd husband was the manager of the band as well), she's a little punk old lady that, to this day, fights for justice and the environment :D She organizes and participates in a lot of protests!

People who don't understand HBC is actually high fashion are removed from reality. If people think about the Olsen twins or Sarah Jessica Parker... high fashion, but with Helena they don't. Because there is a goth element to her look? I don't get it. She's a legend.
Her look reminds me of some very cool Asian street fashion that I've seen before, as well. Super fashion forward.

Because she’s not their body type or American. She also really only works with one designer and thrifts on her own clothes so she’s not as marketable in fashion. I’m sure her being gothic plays into it but she’s not accessible to people to who make money off of the Olsens or SJP so by their tastes she’s not worthy of their industry’s positive labels.
She doesn’t let other people dress her. She doesn’t promote brands and accept PR free stuff from luxury brands. She’s not trying to sell you anything. That’s why the public loves her and the media hates her.

for that dress that wouldnt close, try chucking some eyelets in it and having it lace up. That could be a fun continuation of your learning to sew video: making things that dont work work. You might need to throw a busk or some boning in it to give it some structure, but I believe in you!
Maybe even using that black elastic from the masks!
These videos are teaching me so much about having fun with my wardrobe and finding my own style and not dressing too much like a boring adult - thank you so much!

This video exudes joy. HBC's style is really not my style, but I kept smiling and thinking "yeah, that's really a really cool outfit".
Some ideas:
-Seeing she wears a lot of ruched skirts, you could try to create the same effect with a few safety pins, some temporary stitches and/or a hair tie on the inside.
-You could remove the button and the buttonhole loop from the jumpsuit and go "Unbottoned? It doesn't have a button, the open back is a feature!"
So this isn't directly related to the video but I think you'd all appreciate this possibly little known Helena fact: she's a big fan of Hamilton (the musical), so dresses as Santa with full fake belly and beard to hand out the Secret Santa presents to the London cast on stage before a show in the week before Christmas.
(I used to work at the theatre and one day walked through stage door to see HBC as Santa. Turns out wasn't hallucinating.)
As someone who dressed like Helena for 2 years this video has reignited the need to dress like this again! My one addition to your outfits is to add knee length socks and let them fall down the leg a bit. It can really make any outfit into instant helenacore :)
This was the video I didn’t realise I have been waiting my whole life for!!! I would wear all of these outfits - and actually the stripe dress that doesn’t fit one way with the shirt that doesn’t fit another was one of my favourite outfits. Also very much into the big collar dress in the mash up at the end! Can I enquire as to the shade of that delicious Lisa Eldridge (I think!) lipstick you applied - the brown one?
haha Well spotted. It's Velvet Decade and it's SO unusual, I love it. Glad you liked it, I think the big collar will come in handy at the end of the month when I run out of ideas - just throwing it over anything ups the drama by about 1 million.
I love how Helena embraces her weirdness, and not trying to "fit in" into this perfect TV show persona.

Coming here to comment that Leena, you can just move the button on that jumpsuit!! Move it higher up or lower down so you can reach on your own. If it looks too tricky try adding a metal hook and eye. Or try that zipper idea!! A great opportunity to practice making your clothes work for you!!!! Love, a person who has to take in the waist of every single pair of pants she owns because body proportions
Yes! I was thinking this too or even remove the button all together. I see no problem with the open back look, could even layer that tartan second skin shirt under it and get a cute pattern moment :)
first of all, love this concept and video...second of all, idea of the almost-but-not-quite fitting stripe dress but what about removing the back zipper entirely and replacing it with a corset style lace up back?

Oooh, I've an idea for the long black formal dress - I noticed a lot of her dresses/skirts are ruched/draped/asymetrical/hiked up somehow... Is there any way you could pin it up in front to make it look like a high-low hem? Or on the side or something? Or maybe knot it, or tuck a bit of the hem into a belt? I think it could look really cool that way!

I am almost 54 and still don't wear 'grown up' clothes. Snag tights, old goth wear, layers nobody asked for and 50's style spotty, skull or stripey dresses are core staples of my wardrobe. You keep having fun, Leena. I love the Helenacore. It's fantastic!
About the jumpsuit: How about doing a lace up back for Helenacore? Perhaps with a ribbon?
You can loosen it enough to get in and out of it with ease or adjust how open the back is for different looks. Even tuck a kerchief or bit of lace as a contrasting faux modesty panel with a few pins if you want to change the look.
I am still watching the video so don’t mind me while I add… add a headband to frame the deliberately disheveled hair and when you wear your glasses up they don’t get tangled. Bonus you can pin curls to the band when hair does not want to hold a curl.

I was thinking with the waistcoat at 17:57, if Leena paired it with a long sleeve shirt, it would give a really amazing Princess Bride/ 1800s Romantic adventurer look, and something I feel Helena Bonham Carter would approve. Same with the Victoria does 1980s business jacket at 19:40, a white shirt underneath would give a cool like vampiresque vibe.

I don't know if I am the only one, but your videos really help to develop my vocabulary.
Just a few things that came to my mini white watching:
That sheer polka dot shirt - put a big brooch Pieniny the bottom of the colar or a chunky victorian neclace over it and just keep it like that - you can so pull of just wearing it without anything over.
That first b&w stripe dress - get a rivet set and some sturdy cotton tape for stabilasing - lace it up at the back.
It's a good thing I don't know where yoy live or I would be breaking in to steal that victorian bussle coat.
The stripe shirt and the stripe dress without sleeves but then ++++ the waistcoat on top will tie the whole thing together I think
as someone who has been matching my novelty (pumpkin, ghost, mushroom) berets to my equally novelty massive (pumpkin, ghost, mushroom) earrings, this video just makes me feel ALL THE THINGS. I love Helena, I love playful style, I love THIS. All the stripey things, yes. Now I feel better about currently filming spooky outfits that all have very playful feelings because why not. Yes, i'm in my thirties, yes, I still wear novelty print and funky items, I do what I Waaaaant. ahaha.

Hey, I loved this video! Your outfits were so creative and darkly whimsical, I really think Helena would approve! A suggestion for the striped dress that won't zip up - maybe insert grommets down each side and lace it up with some black satin ribbon to create a corset detail? Easy to undo, and you can put the bow at the bottom instead of the top so you can actually tie and untie it yourself. Either way, thank you for creating content focused on sustainability without losing any fun!

RE jumpsuit zip: You can just tie something onto most zips so you have something to grab. The little ribbons that lots of clothes come with for hanging them up work well.
So I put on a bunch of weight during pandemic, and this video is whst I needed. Seeing someone else also struggling to close their clothes... it makes me feel less alone

The rainbow puffer jacket is galaxy brained. It definitely has that quirky factor that works with the spirit of the project.
