    Here's the keyword paragraph you've all been waiting for. Styling new outfits can be hard, but the big purr machines know what's got claws. If your closet is full of pieces that do not include leopard print, I can spot a problem there buster and also you should start using the word wardrobe, it has big cat energy. How to layer leopard print is a phrase you might be searching, so here it is in print (get it) so you can find this video and get some outfit inspiration and new / fashion / ideas. Sustainable fabrics are the fabrics that already exist, so conserve your sanity and our furry neighbours and shop second-hand. Or Thrift, if you're American. Which you could be.

      i adore it - i feel like Oscar Wilde would have loved that, considering "it is absurd to divide people into good or bad. people are either charming or tedious"
      though i always defined tacky as "a cheap attempt to look expensive" - but that might just be my middle class white family's influence

      I often wear it in smaller prints that are a bit faded/muted looking, so it doesn’t look ‘loud’. Wear it bold and loud and you can channel punk vibes. Wear it soft and it’s a ‘grunge’ staple. I’ve got some faded leopard print boots that look amazing with washed-out grey skinny jeans and a slouchy jumper, grunge heaven. I think varying the ‘intensity’ of the print gives you absolutely loads of options, depending on what kind of aesthetic brings you joy.

    I've kind of always had a subconscious bias against leopard print. I probably labelled it "tacky" at a young age and avoided it because I haven't owned anything in that print for at least 10 years. However, this video was really interesting and made me question exactly why that is. I'm unlikely to try and get into something that I have no experience in but at least now I have more to think about.

    I have 3 pajama sets that are leopard print (2 which have matching robes). I also used to buy leopard print Snooki Slippers secondhand (not a Snooki or Jersey Shore fan, just loved the print & how the slippers felt when wearing them for a few months; they eventually each fell apart & I had to throw them out, which has to be terrible for the planet). I even have leopard print luggage.
    But MOST importantly, I have multiple home decor items (mugs, trays, pillows, posters, a duvet cover, etc) that are leopard print or cheetah print, and they're in different colors. And I plan to get more when I move. I even want leopard print wallpaper as an accent wall in my future bedroom.

    Characters that made me love leopard was Nana in the anime Nana, this rock singer who always wore a leopard coat and red dress because her abusive grandmother always policed what she wore, and Sarah Paulson's character in American Horror Story Hotel. Both characters embody the late 80's-early 90's glam rock meets grunge aesthetic that I love but also the leopard coat shows their rebellion, their nonconformity, they wear it like a form of protection because neither character has anyone looking out for them. It's relatable, fierce, unnerving and comforting all at once

    Thank you for this, Leena! Leopard print is definitely something I want to add to my wardrobe very soon! I'm a bit interested in your opinions on secondhand fur; I feel like I see so many massive mink coats in vintage shops that never sell, probably because so many of us are put off by the idea that it's actual fur. I own an amazing faux fur vintage cut coat right now, but wish it wasn't made of pure plastic. It's a hard line to draw I think, very personal. I feel bad that I enjoy the cut and fit of those fur coats, and am afraid that if people see me wear real fur, I'd get looked down on. I was thinking it would probably even be considered inappropriate to wear to lots of places like my work, or a vegan restaurant, because it's practically offensive to wear it? But it's definitely not a good thing to send all those fur coats to landfill either, right? I'm torn. It's also interesting to compare our perceptions of fur vs leather; it's much more acceptable to wear leather still, but not fur. Sure there are differences in the production and it's a lot easier to pass faux as real, but it's interesting that so many of us are up in arms about fur when leather is still a common and acceptable fabric for many people. This isn't to justify cruelty to animals, but interesting.
    Anyway, great video! Love your stuff, Leena!

    • @Grrranola
      @Grrranola 3 роки тому +10

      I never understood the position of people who are against wearing 2nd hand leather or fur. The animal is already dead and you're right that it's a waste to send these materials to landfill when they are still usable. Fur at least will break down over time while the plastic faux fur will never biodegrade.

    • @sheepladybaa
      @sheepladybaa 3 роки тому +12

      real fur will keep you crazy warm in the winter... there is a reason that animals have it. I agree that we shouldn't be harvesting fur from animals anymore, but I am also 100% okay with anything secondhand. If you take good care of it, it will last a VERY long time. So why waste an item that still has practical value?

    My first favorite first character in leopard prints was Halle Berry in the Flintstones movie, I adore her and her outfits. I do want to put out the centuries old white supremacist, orientalist, imperialism of Africa, displaying slaves in zoos of England dressed in pelts, how that has shaped our fashion and media culture till today. You also touched a bit on class warfare, but it also is definitely a big part of why something is tacky until it’s elevated by designers (although that also has a lot to do with race and culture appropriation as well).

    Finally my specialism comes in handy *faints* but the more you know...
    Jacquard ("JackArd") is just how the fabric is woven, named after the type of loom, which allows designs of a non-linear nature to be fully woven, as oppposed to woven plain and the design printed on. It allows different types of fibres to be woven together, and different weave structures to be combined in the same design. It's often used for christmas party clothes to incorporate shiny fibres which would usually fall apart after a few washes. If you turn the fabric over often the reverse design should be on the other side, if its not lined. Usually clothes made from jacquard fabric are slightly heavier and more expensive. I'm so sorry if that was INCREDIBLY boring.
    Also, I don't really wear patterns generally, but I do have a leopard print scrunchie that I bloody love.

    A whole video on leopard print wouldn't usually be my go-to, but I really enjoyed this 😂 This video is such a good example of a creator making videos that they want to make, and the fact that they are compelled by the topic makes the video itself so much more compelling.

    In 2013 I bought a leopard print coat because I liked it and because I had become a fan of Manic Street Preachers the previous year and leopard print has been a big part of the band's aesthetic, particularly in the early 1990s... it's been my favourite early spring/autumn/early+late winter jacket ever since, definitely a staple in my wardrobe.

      I went through a major Manic Street Preachers phase in the early 2010s and I envied Richey's leopard print coat so much! It looked so edgy with the heavy eyeliner. I could never justify buying one because, where I live, I get to wear coats 5 times a year at the most, but I still think it's the coolest thing ever.

    The jacquard fabric is such a great idea! I currently don't own any leopard print because I look best in cool toned colors and high contrast and most leopard print is the exact opposite of this. And i have to admit that I used to think that the colorful version looked "tacky" but I'm definitely going to reconsider that opinion now. But my favorite animal print will always be zebra haha I just wish it was as ubiquitous as leopard

    I am not going to pretend that I have never owned any animal print clothing, but since my paternal grandmother was obsessed with animals prints of all kinds I have associate them with older women. I don't think my love of 101 Dalmatians as a child helped this opinion.

    I LOVE leopard print. I've loved it since I was a wee one. There was a point when I didn't wear it much, but still had leopard print pieces in my room (still have a blanket my auntie gave me when I was 11, it's on my bed) but I have like, two dresses, a recently thrifted a really really beautiful stretchy leopard print pencil skirt. Love that thing to piece. Thrifted leopard vans. I will definitely be reading that book! I'll be looking for it in my libraries before I go on thrift books!

    My opinion: it works if the colours and contrast suit your complexion! If you are cool toned, warm toned will look out of place or “tacky.” Leopard print looks the best when the eye isn’t conflicted by contrasting both colour and tone. The eye finds it tacky when it doesn’t fit’. So you want something similar colours to your skin and hair.if you have higher contrast between your hair and skin tone, higher contrast will look better. If you have warm tones, warm tones will look better. Give it a try!

    I've always thought while growing up (prolli steered to that thought by my mother) that ''leopard print'' is tarty....... First person I remember wearing it, plus being tarty : Dorien Green - from Birds of a Feather and then Mandy Dingle on Emmerdale.
    As a teen I deliberately bought items in this print to annoy my mother, and LOVE it !! :) xx

    yes! i recently acquired a leopard print headband, my first leopard item. i always admired how it looked on others (leanne woodfull comes to mind) but never thought it was for me - until i watched Contra's iconic video on "Opulence", where she cites the same book you're citing. it really made me want to actively try rocking the leo print and though i don't shop for clothes often i'm excited to see if i come across some cool garments in the future!
