First saw this when I was about 13 while baby sitting for my 9 yr old cousin. Scared us both and the music stayed with both of us into adulthood. Sort of like the stabbing music/sound in Psycho is so recognizable today.
So good. Classic. Not sure movies are written as well today. Dorothy McGuire was wonderful. George Brent was tremendous. Can't go wrong with Elsa and Ethel.
Top notch noir directed by Robert Siodmak who was IMO the second best noir director after Fritz Lang. My favorite noir cinematographer, Nicholas Musuraca is at the camera.
I have watched this movie at least half a dozen times and it still gives me chills. It is so atmospheric with wonderful performances, especially by Dorothy, and you are completely taken in. Don't watch it alone, especially if there is a thunderstorm.
I first saw this when I was very young. It scared the crap out of me that much I was afraid to go into the cellar or any dark places. This was more scary than Psycho....
Funny how, in the beginning I felt that the professor could be the murderer. But his role contradicted that hypothesis ’til the very end. Thanks for posting this film, I enjoyed it. 🙏❤️
One of the best "old dark house" movies I've seen! Part of this type of movie is having quite a few people in the house, but NOT too many. I think at its peak, there were nine here, plus the dog, just about right.. Another thing is there is almost always a semi-invalid somehow isolated from the others. We've got that here, too. And the kitchen is usually a safe zone, pretty much true here also.
I think the first one of these I ever saw was a Francis the Talking Mule movie, "Francis in the Haunted House" (1956). Other favorites were "What a Carve Up" (1961), sex and humor in that one and I always looked for more after that. "Murder, she Said" (also 1961) was another favorite, There have been others, less enjoyable, since then. But this one which I'm seeing 60-65 years after "Francis in the Haunted House" is a very good one.
This is one of my favourite movies! It has all the ingredients a good thriller needs and as someone said with one of the longest thunderstorms on film.
Hi Melodieebner, I also love old movies! No CGI or car chases, or explosions, just great stories! But I got curious about the remake, you mentioned. So I looked it up and you are so spot on! That was terrible. Why did they even bother making such trash, I'll never know. bfn
Agree..it made it more interesting to watch her acting..mute ,so stiff, her arms going down stairs. I could just hear the director yelling..act scare frantic..so funny

Thank you! The classics have my heart...
I love these old movies! Thank you so much for sharing!!
I saw this as a child and scared me to death! Never forgot how scared I was!

Excellent quality in film and audio. Thank you
Excellent movie. Had to watch it again.

My favorite screen performance of Ethel Barrymore.
Any relation to Drew Barrymore?
Such an underrated classic. I actually wouldn't mind if someone did a remake of this.
Why do people always write “underrated” underneath the most famous films? And why does underrated even matter? Trying to sound smart? Trolling? Bored?
@@OrangeTabbyCat I think they just mean that it's a terrific movie, but not widely known or remembered like "Casablanca" or "Psycho".

Wonderful movie. I have seen it several times.
Thank you thank you THANK YOU 😊 ❤!!!
I LOVE THAT HOUSE!!
This is a classic!
Just the right movie for October
Dorthy got a lot of exercise in this movie running about!
That's one way to stay thin.
Great movie, thank you for sharing. Boy women were so beautiful & men so classy back the. Nothing like our fake women & trashy men of today.
I love that the women aren’t hysterical in this movie. The fact that the older woman gets to be the hero is a true treat.
This is one of my favourite movies!
It has all the ingredients a good thriller needs and as someone said with one of the longest thunderstorms on film.
What would the plot be without every character physically and verbally moving Helen around like she's a piece on a gameboard.
Excellent thriller a must watch
Good suspense thriller! Good entertainment! My how young Dorothy McGuire was.
Gene Tierney was not in this movie!!!!
Rhonda Fleming played Blanche!!!
That was such a good movie. As good as any thriller or who-done-it we have now.
Very spooky. My mom turned me onto it in my teens. We had bulldogs so she thought I’d like it. 👻
I can't be the only person to figure out who the murderer was very quickly.
No James, it's just you!
You're a diamond in the rufff...
" You have to go to the village and get some ether", as you do...
Re-make in 2000 is no match for this Production. Dorothy McGuire wonderful !

Great actors
What a beauty Dorothy McGuire was…
First Class.....😊
Love it ..a classic!😊
A real gothic number. Love it.
I love this movie
Nice movie in with the title named behind. A staircase saimbles fancy perspectives to the acence in plot whom ever the writer is .
Not from the book The Circular Staircase by Mary Roberts Rhinehart
Fabulous 😊 subscribed
WHERE WAS CARLTON 😅
Didn't find it scary at all, but I really liked it. This is a movie I'll rewatch.
I only pulled this video up to type my serrrrrrrrious doubt that it is a spiral at all. I'll bet everything that it's gonna prove to be circular.
I understand ad breaks, but every four minutes??
Good murder mystery.
Great ending❤
It was a dark and stormy night...
Nurses always get treated like crap.
My Aunt used to get hysterical laryngitis
Si, es una afonia histérica.
What’s with all the ten minute long commercials? I won’t watch this channel again
Hmmm. There wasn't one commercial while I was watching it
Too sinister intense for me right now
They really seem to have liked their brandy.
New Subscriber ❤
The eyebrows!!! 😮
Too bad. Can’t stand all the long commercials
What??? 51:19
15:39
No small resemblance to Elsa Lanchester's hubby at the time . . .
Tenerissima Dorothy!
Oops! My mistake!
I love Elsa.
And I like PizzA...😉🍕😋
Well the acting was certainly a horror!
😂😂😂
❤
I love old movies but why are the men so stupid about the word 'no' and constantly directing women where to go by grabbing them.
La novia de Frankestein!
Third commercial break in 18 minutes. No thanks.
Hmm only see 3 total
"I like to see women cry"
😂
Poor acting.
Agree..it made it more interesting to watch her acting..mute ,so stiff, her arms going down stairs. I could just hear the director yelling..act scare frantic..so funny
What kind of man knows a murderer is on the prowel and sends the young single lady home on her own 2 miles away 🙄😔🥸
