I appreciate you covering this topic. My grandmother had colon cancer.
Thank you Dr. Mitch for another informative video! After procrastinating many years, I finally got my first colonoscopy a few weeks ago. While nothing dangerous was found, the doctor said I have a benign condition called melanosis coli (black colon). It was caused by prolonged use of senna laxative, which I was put on several years ago. I had experienced a brain injury, and was given Keppra, to prevent seizures in the weeks after. It caused a bowel obstruction. I was then given the senna, which I have taken for years since, with my doctor's knowledge. The gastro doctor told me to stop it immediately, and it would take at least 2 YEARS for my colon to return to a normal color! He has me taking fiber now instead of senna. I thought it was interesting that no one bothered to ask how well-hydrated I am, or anything about my Magnesium intake. I've been trying to locate a DO in my area, unfortunately the closest one on my plan is 25 miles away.
Great information! Thank you!!
