You’re feeling what so many of us feel. I’m 58 years old and love classic rock and metal. Sometime in the 90’s anything approaching real rock and roll seemed to disappear from the mainstream. As time went by I, like many, felt like rock was dead so I just kept listening to the oldies. The nostalgia was great but it was sad, too. Then I discovered reaction videos, and enjoyed seeing young people discover great bands like Led Zeppelin, Yes, etc. Luckily this lead me to discover Band Maid and I was blown away! Here’s an all female Japanese band that I can say with conviction, can stand alongside the giants in rock and roll history. That’s my take, and I’m sticking to it! After about 15 years of not bothering to go to a concert I made sure to go to the Band Maid show in D.C. in 2022. As far as I knew, with the crazy state of the world, it could be my only chance to see them and I wasn’t going to miss it for anything. And it was as good, or better, a show as any I’d been to back in the “glory days” of rock. Long live the Maids!

I've said it before, so much of what we think of as the Band-Maid style, the bass, the drums, vocal harmonies, guitar solo... was present in this their _first_ song. Thanks for the reaction!
Alone was not the first song written by the band, but was the first written entirely by the band without any outside collaboration to be accepted for recording by their management. Here's an excerpt from an interview where Kanami discussed being discouraged after have many songs rejected and how the other members support (especially from Saiki) encouraged her to not give up. (Kanami is the main composer and Miku is the main lyricist of their songs, but the others do contribute to their parts and Saiki has been main lyricist on several songs since the Unleash EP in 2022) INTERVIEWER: At the beginning of Band-Maid, most of your songs were provided to you, but afterwards you began to write them yourself. KANAMI: While we were receiving songs from other songwriters, I was also writing songs. I submitted them too, but as expected, it was not approved after it was compared to the work of the songwriters. There were a lot of rejections during that time, but I did my best to write more songs through encouragement from Sai-chan. She would not remember, because she was drunk, but she said to me. “Kanami, don’t give up, it is better to keep writing more and more, because you have the talent.” When I heard those words, I thought, “If there are people close to me who accept my music, I must do my best.”
You using remarks as in "was NOT the first song written by the band" is not a gotcha at all. When fans (and composers) use the phrase "first song written" it Is understood as first published song. Many bands write many songs but only the one selected for publishing is referred to as "the first written song". All the music written by the management was not just thrown to them and said to "play it this way". Kanami (and the other band members) had a great influence on the way the songs were finalized before publishing. It was a time of learning and growing which eventually led to having "Alone" as the first song Band-Maid composed on their own but they still had help (as with all music published) from engineers and sound techs. The short explanation is.....everybody knows what is meant by the "first song written" and "ALONE" is the first song written entirely by Band-Maid. Period.
Main composer is Kanami. She sends out demo's to the other members who add to her composition. (Lyrics later added usually by Miku, sometimes Saiki). Kanami composes a lot using piano. She was really into orchestral music from a young age - Chopin if I recall correctly (?) Rock music was quite new to her, and she first picked up a guitar late in life too. None of them were really into rock music, except maybe MISA who's mum was a bit of a rocker! Oh and Akane was into Maximum the Hormone too! (They are insane, and have a female drummer that inspired Akane). - For full story you need to check out Ohrenje's documentaries. The story of Band-Maid is quite nuts. The docs start with Saiki.
Yes, just watch "Maximum the hormone - Yoshu Fukushu" (the one with the thumbnail of a dark corridor and drummer Nao, standing in front of the camera) for a first impression. This band is crazy! The song is a good starting point. Hopefully you like "System of a down" :-)
Great, you got it :-) And your comments about their songs before Alone (1:10) and the importance of writing 'your' own music (6:30) is ON POINT ❤ I think you are ready for the seven wonderful documentaries 'maid' by the MAIDIACs Ohrenje (from France) and Kasper Michaels (narrator from Canada, I think). You won't beleave how many MAIDIACAs are following your path through these 30minute videos in the following order: Saiki, Kanami, Akane, Misa, Miku1, Miku2, Miku3. You will learn alot, including their song writing process!
And if you want to be like Akane - sitting on your bed with headphones on - then listen to "Maximum the Hormone". This was one of the inspirations for Akane: It's a crazy hard rock band from Japan with a female drummer (Nao). Their music is in some way comparable to System of a Down with more craziness). It's quite hard to search for a specific song, but if you look for "Maximum the hormone Yoshu Fukushu" (マキシマム ザ ホルモン) you will find my recommanedation for a first impression 🎶

Nice reaction Buddha. My take on these fab 5 talented ladies is this. Every band, song, vocalist, drummer, bassist, and guitarist that I’ve ever enjoyed in my 59 years on this planet, are all rolled into one band of maids who call themselves Band-Maid!
Do I want something for Christmas? Just one "little" thing: the announcement by Band-Maid that next year they will be coming to Europe/UK for an extensive tour. That would make me dance around the tree. So ladies, make this long-time and always loyal Maidiac a happy man.
As much as I would like to see them again the band should tour Europe. It can be challenging to find a venue if a band isn’t widely known or sings in an asian language. Let’s face it. We know how good they are but I get blank stares from almost everyone else when I mention them.
@@killiansred1000 i know. I'm a lone voice in the wilderniss as well - often enough. And yet, Bridear is doing quite a big tour in Europe/UK next year. and they are less well known than BM. So let's nourish some hope. Have a nice weekend.
It's late evening in Oz, time to crack a cold one or twenty and play massive amounts of BAND-MAID, the best music to ever come into my life, fck I love this band, cheers 👍🍻
@thevikingbuddha I am my friend, the Maids are just incredible and the beer is delicious, hey try their song Rinne, absolutely gets your motor going 🤪👍🍻🍻
In a recent interview Kanami said she didn't start listening to rock music until high school when she decided to become a guitarist because it was cool. Lol. Growing up she played classical musicon the piano. Sometimes you will hear that classical influence in their songs....such as Different. Someone growing up on rock likely wouldn't write a riff like that.
For this to be their first breakout self-written song it hits you like a wall. I believe it was Saiki who pushed and believed in Kanami to keep writing. Mincho once said this was her favorite. I also agree with loving how it was done in kind of a no-nonsense style, love it or leave it. Not to forget, great reaction.
A couple things. You voiced something I think all Maidiacs feel at some point," I can't believe this exists " and then thank Crom I found them! Also at no time have the Maids ever in their vids or stage performances gone in for anything touting their, or leaning on, their femineity. It has always been about the music period the maid outfits merely their battle gear, something to be worn. The stage the lights all to merely augment the music it's always the music. Amadeus Kanami is the genius but all the members come in and add their licks; she has Sanatana and Lary Carlton I believe as two main influences. The way this band formed, well, they "painted a miracle". You will hear that all as you proceed down this pigeon hole, it is a truly amazing tale of fate, luck, kismet, karma, and most of all determination
Been listening to rock for over 60 years and now Band-Maid has come to dominate my music listening because they are so skilled in composition/performance and they have songs that scratch every different musical itch I have.
Kanami (Lead Guitar) is the main composer. She had not written hard rock before, but she is a musical genius, and a super student. She wasn't restricted by traditional ideas so she was more free to do what she wants, blending genres, writing songs in the same form as what she was used to. She studies all sorts of musicians and the greats, and uses them as influences. I think this is why a lot of people say Band Maid songs sound or feel familiar but they can't put their finger on why.
@ someone said Kanami has great pop sensibilities which is why even if she experiments with prog or heavier stuff in the verses, you know the song will fall back onto a catchy chorus to enjoy at a surface level too.
Ahhh the tiny hat days…RIP tiny hat! At the very beginning you can see Saiki throwing the mic stand down…she stop using it…she hated it! MISA! with her 4-string bass wt. the Jimi Hendrix sticker…the old school rocker of the band thanks to her Mom! Kanami free to melt your face with her solo…Santana her inspiration! Miku is all smiles because she knows…World Domination is next! Yes classic rock influenced all of them. 🤘🕊️🦍🥷👸🏻👀PO!
Another astonishing thing about the five members is their very different musical tastes and experience before forming the band. The only solid rock-experienced member is probably MISA. Though others experienced rock through their parents' listening habits. "Thrill" was the B-side of much _poppier_ single, a song that probably suited their skills more. But the members decided on "Thrill" for their first MV because they were determined that hard-rock was their future.
@@thevikingbuddha The A side, 'Ai To Jonetsu No Matador' (Love, Passion, Matador) has a real worldwide pop hit kind of sound...and then, Kanami definitely pays tribute to one of her main heros 😁
The stars were aligned when this band was formed. Miku's idea gets accepted by the Production company. They post the open auditions. Which apparently wasn't getting much attention. Miku finds Kanami (lead guitar) on NicoNico, a Japanese streaming site, where Kanami is doing singing and playing songs she's been writing. Miku has the Production company reach out to Kanami, who accepts. Kanami then reaches out to friend Akane (drums), who has done work with Kanami on her demos. Akane's current job closes down right at the same time as Kanami reaches out. Akane then reaches out to MISA (bass), who were friends from their time at the Tokyo School of Music. Happenstance has it, MISA current band has just broken up. And there you have it the original 4 of Band-Maid. After a couple of months together and their second live show, Miku realizes her "pop idol" voice is not quite the right match for the music she envisioned for the band and approached the Production Company management to look for a second singer to dual vocals. Miku and the Production Company scouted Saiki from the current talent associated to the company. And the rest is history. The fab 5 have been together ever since. ♥Miku♥ --> 💚Kanami💚 --> 💛Akane💛 --> 💜MISA💜 --> 💙Saiki💙 PO!🕊 🤘😆🤘 For a more complete introduction...the other Maidiacs have pointed to the Ohrenje series. The order...Saiki -> Kanami -> Akane -> MISA -> Miku (3 eps) Production level is amazing and they are fun to watch. The time really does fly by. Once you start, you'll want to binge-watch them.😂
The stars alligned. I'm absolutely having to hold myself back from binge-watching as that is what I would normally do before the UA-cam channel.I amplanning to react to the Ohrenje series soon. Thank you.
Thank you for this list. I sometimes think I’m ALONE on this journey. Your list is quite on point, but convincing my wife to take a trip to Japan to see BM is next. Loving your reactions and looking forward to more!
Besides all of the musical influences each girl brought to the band, they got to work with professional song writers and composers for three albums, this experience was like a crash course on writing music.
Kentarō Akutsu seemed to be particularly influential, he's the only one that I've seen Kanami pictured with and of course they went back to him and asked him to write a song for the B side of Bubble resulting in the beautiful song 'Smile'
If you want to know how the band formed and how the individual members grew up with music I would like to recommend the Ohrenje Band Maid Documentary !
The genius of Kanami re the music and Miku re the lyrics. Ah! Misa- Kanami generally lets her do her own thing more or less but she is always the quickest to get her bass arrangement back to Kanami so that she can start the complete arrangement right.
Well let me tell you about a story about a group named *BAND-MAID* A group of lovely girls who played rock music that thought was dead And then one day *BAND-MAID* went to the record producers And the next thing you know they started writing on their own *Alone* that is the first song they wrote on their own Well the next thing you know *BAND-MAID* is now and free To write their own music as they shouted out with glee They said *Domination* is where you oughta be And they pack up their gear to make history... 🤠 🐎 🐦 🎀
Once they were left "Alone" by their record / management companies to create what they wanted, well, look what they did. Alone's somewhat sad, heavy, yet empowering story (topics Miku's known for writing about), against Kanami's up-tempo, complex, yet rockin' music, is quintessential Band-Maid. BAND-MAID is an important influence and contributor to the music industry with a continuous, growing worldwide fanbase. But to me, they are just the best sounding, best writers of hard rock music, and the most fun, joyous group of musicians to come along since the Beatles, imxo! Thx, V-Bud!
Alone was on the EP 'Brand New Maid' , just a few months later they released the 3 song single 'Yolo' with 'Matchless Gum' & 'Unfair Game' all composed by Kanami with Miku's lyrics. Yolo is the first sign of Kanami's 'Prog' side, the second verse is nuts and how Saiki maintains the melody while everyone else is going off in different directions still amazes me but she has demonstrated in many songs since that she is perfect at keeping the tempo while all hell is breaking loose with the instrumentation. The melody for Yolo (part at least) was composed by Kanami before Band Maid existed and there is a video on YT somewhere of her playing it on piano in it's original form.
i discovered japanese girl groups in 2016 with a youtube recommendation for BAND MAID'S mv 'real existence'. like you i never imagined that it even existed until then. i am a 71 year old bassist that grew up musically from the early 60's to the 80's and thought i'd heard it all. WRONG ! after rap and hip hop disgustingly took over the music scene in the states i had a very hard time finding great new music for the last 30 years. these bands have been ruling my life for 9 years now and new amazing groups keep appearing all of the time. you have much to discover still. i'll be along for the ride.
I bet one of the maidacs( not that i ain't one ^^) already told you BUT Kanami( leadguitar, song writing, composing) is the first japanese artist to get her own PRS custom signature limited edition. fun fact and something to be hella proud of for our mincho
All Band-Maid music videos are all top notch in one way or another, and some are cinematic masterpieces, "Manners" comes to mind. NEVER underestimate Band-Maid music videos. "YOLO" (official music video) is another one where the girls on a small stage but surrounded tightly by props, you might like. I know MISA's (bass) mother turned her on to Jimi Hendricks. Actually I think MISA was the only one that was really into the old Rock. The others learned to like Rock as they were trying to find their niche in the beginning. Kanami (lead guitar) was nurtured in classical music but her musical mind was always turning. She played piano but switched to guitar in HS to impress the girls, like guys did.
It's a huge pleasure already...firmly with you to vicariously re-experience the joy of uncovering a true rock and roll story. You'll question if this is 'Real Existence' and think you're just 'Daydreaming' but you'll come to be a true believer in 'Fate'. Yeah...subtle is my middle name 😁👍🤘🤘🤘
BAND-MAID, never gave up their dream of world domination. Alone proves that! Kanami is a musical genius! Maybe check out the Ohrenje documentaries about the band members...they worked hard to get where they are.
Saiki threw away micstand in very first seconds tells everything..Finally free 🔥🤘 Musical genius Kanami and other ladies are finally free to show the world what they are made of 🔥❤️🤘
Nice reaction. Slight correction. AS I am sure othere commentators will have pointed out not the first song written by Kanami. She had veen writing songs for a few years but they were always rejected by management. However she never gave up and Saiki especially always gave her encouragement. Alone was the first somg written by Kanami that was accepted by management. Hence this song held in hight esteem by the fans
Ohrenje's 7-part docu-series is a must watch. In brief, influences Miku- Tokyo Jihen & Ringo Sheena, Kanami- Classical music & Carlos Santana, Saiki- JPop, Akane- Maximum the Horomone, because of female drummer Nao, and MISA- US/UK classic rock from her mother's record collection, jazz and fellow female bass player Paz Lenchantin (Pixies, A Perfect Circle)
You’ll be able to appreciate this song differently, not necessarily more, but differently, after you’ve been through their catalog a few times. You are right that songs they didn’t write are still great (Thrill, Freedom, The non-fiction days, etc); however, “Alone” has that special Kanami DNA you can detect in the complexity. It’s an alt-rock pop song, but it has progressive elements. Akane and MISA put their stamps on it for sure. And parts like the unexpected spoken word break, the frantic flurry fill between sections, all Band Maid things you will hear from this point forward. So much fun ahead. Enjoy 🤘🏽
Yep, they all loved music, with different musical taste and influences. Miku the rhythm guitarist/backing vocal love the Japanese rock band called "Tokyo Jihen" and also loved Japanese traditional music (enka) as a child. The lead singer Saiki also listened to and sang variety of music, but her idol was Namie Amuro, who was called "Queen of J-pop" and her style was heavily influenced by RnB, and dance music, Misa the bassist loves funk and grange music from the 90s, Akane the drummer is influenced by a female drummer Nao from Maximum the Hormone. I don't know her music taste, but I'm inclined to say it's probably metal. Kanami the lead guitarist has many influences, classic, jazz, rock, metal, blues...and you can hear that in their playing/singing style. Their unique sound is created by fusing all their influences into their music seemlessly. They never do anything straight. Their early sound is leaning towards classic rock with splash of metal and prog, they started adding more elements and explored different styles over the years and experimented to create new sound. As Miku once said "We keep creating the music that only we can come up with".
Kanami came to this group with some songs already written. And she continued to write. But it took 3 years for them to be approved by the record company.
Viking, you're at the point where you should watch the very informative and excellent documentaries on the women of Band-Maid that were done by Ohrenje and can be found in his UA-cam channel. They will answer many of the questions you have and are entertaining in their own right. Just make sure to watch them in the proper order, starting with Saiki (vocals) followed by Kanami (lead guitar), Akane (drums), MISA (bass) and a 3-parter of Miku (rhythm guitar & vocals)
You really should watch the ORHENJE DOCUMENTARIES!!!!! Start with Saiki then Kanami, Akane, Misa and then the three for Miku for a little history lesson on each of the members!!!!! Thank you for what you do!!!!!
Great reaction, I love this song, there's a memorable version of "Alone" performed at London Comic Con 2016... filmed with a cell phone, the sound is poor and the shooting angle is not good, but trust me, it's one of those performances that legends are made of: BAND-MAID, "Alone" live @ London ComicCon 2016: ua-cam.com/video/844bAPjKWNU/v-deo.htmlsi=3LZBEgDjluxP30FK Also, I've heard that "YOLO" (my favorite B-M song) was written even before "Alone", keep in mind that these early Band-Maid compositions, are in fact Kanami compositions that she worked on previously. BAND-MAID, "YOLO": ua-cam.com/video/wKZbzcUdY1g/v-deo.htmlsi=ygJ-FNX7K1cWNJlP
I'm assuming you are British. There is a fan cam on UA-cam of Band-Maid performing this song at Comicon in London back in 2016. The quality of the audio isn't good enough to react to but it does catch Akane (drummer) beating the drums like they owe her money as well as Mincho (lead guitar/composer) putting on an amazing show.
Brian Epstein gave The Beatles a tip. Stop eating and drinking on stage, as it was disrespectful to the audience. I've never understood these Hydrators who have to drink, eat, smoke & vape during the video and not give it their full attention, like their schedule is so busy that they couldn't possibly do it before or after the video. Just a pet peeve of mine. It happens so often I start to think they're making these on their lunch hour at work. To be fair I did see a Mechanic who was making videos on his lunch hour at work, so there's that. So endeth the rant. However, this was not the first song they wrote. It was the first song they wrote that was allowed on the album. Many songs were rejected by the label over and over. But Saiki encouraged Kanami to keep trying, and she did, until they accepted this song. She kept going and hasn't stopped since! She's another Energizer Bunny like Miku. And sure, the girls from Aldious and LOVEBITES can play circles around Kanami, but no one can write like her. She could probably get to where she could play at their level, but thank God she doesn't, because it becomes and end to itself, and the song becomes an afterthought.
akane needs to bring the hat back. early band vids thats all you ever saw. never saw her face. its not often that a real force in music emerges. hendrix vince gill stevie ray mary chapin carpenter to name a handfull. these girls are there but the western world hasn't woken up yet. and above all that like you i cant stop smiling . bring the hat back made me laugh!!!!

@@TherealSeriousMoonlight You're welcome.
(Kanami is the main composer and Miku is the main lyricist of their songs, but the others do contribute to their parts and Saiki has been main lyricist on several songs since the Unleash EP in 2022)
INTERVIEWER: At the beginning of Band-Maid, most of your songs were provided to you, but afterwards you began to write them yourself.
@@I_am_Warthog Interesting, thanks.
BAND-MAID’s mantra is, “I will do my best.” Every song, every show.

Nice reaction Buddha. My take on these fab 5 talented ladies is this. Every band, song, vocalist, drummer, bassist, and guitarist that I’ve ever enjoyed in my 59 years on this planet, are all rolled into one band of maids who call themselves Band-Maid!
@@ziggyphoto Thank you. That's a good way of looking at it.
Do I want something for Christmas? Just one "little" thing: the announcement by Band-Maid that next year they will be coming to Europe/UK for an extensive tour. That would make me dance around the tree. So ladies, make this long-time and always loyal Maidiac a happy man.
@theohof2204 I second that request
The band will be touring outside japan for sure bcoz they talked about it on the last zepp haneda okyuji.. But not sure where exactly..

Interesting!
@@curtisi4403 Thanks very much.
Thank you, love this!
Been listening to rock for over 60 years and now Band-Maid has come to dominate my music listening because they are so skilled in composition/performance and they have songs that scratch every different musical itch I have.
Wonderful.
Bass great, solo great, vocals and harmonies great, drumming great, melodies great> tiny hat exceptional
I've heard a few rock and punk versions of pop songs that sound really good so I guess it makes sense. She's amazing!
@@TherealSeriousMoonlight Love that.
@@thevikingbuddha The A side, 'Ai To Jonetsu No Matador' (Love, Passion, Matador) has a real worldwide pop hit kind of sound...and then, Kanami definitely pays tribute to one of her main heros 😁
@@philproffitt8363 Cool, I'll check it out.
♥Miku♥ --> 💚Kanami💚 --> 💛Akane💛 --> 💜MISA💜 --> 💙Saiki💙 PO!🕊 🤘😆🤘
For a more complete introduction...the other Maidiacs have pointed to the Ohrenje series. The order...Saiki -> Kanami -> Akane -> MISA -> Miku (3 eps) Production level is amazing and they are fun to watch. The time really does fly by. Once you start, you'll want to binge-watch them.😂

The list wasn't mine but it made me chuckle so I pinned it. Good luck on your mission and thanks for the comment.
If you want to know how the band formed and how the individual members grew up with music

The genius of Kanami re the music and Miku re the lyrics. Ah! Misa- Kanami generally lets her do her own thing more or less but she is always the quickest to get her bass arrangement back to Kanami so that she can start the complete arrangement right.
Cool
Well let me tell you about a story about a group named *BAND-MAID*
A group of lovely girls who played rock music that thought was dead
And then one day *BAND-MAID* went to the record producers
And the next thing you know they started writing on their own
*Alone* that is the first song they wrote on their own
Well the next thing you know *BAND-MAID* is now and free
To write their own music as they shouted out with glee
They said *Domination* is where you oughta be
And they pack up their gear to make history... 🤠 🐎 🐦 🎀
And what a lovely story it is!
Thx, V-Bud!
100% Thank you.
Thanks so much nice reaction!
Thank you, you're welcome.
Cool, I'll have to check those songs out. Thanks
i discovered japanese girl groups in 2016 with a youtube recommendation for BAND MAID'S mv 'real existence'. like you i never imagined that it even existed until then. i am a 71 year old bassist that grew up musically from the early 60's to the 80's and thought i'd heard it all.

Enjoy 🤘🏽
Thank you.
MISA MISA MISA!!!!!
That's really interesting and this is what you get when you blend all those influences.
We'd all love to hear all of those songs that were tossed in the bln before this one.
